Gameweek 12 - The FPL Captain Poll
I forgot to announce this earlier in the week but most of you may have noticed that the FPL captain poll is live and fully operational. There’s plenty of time to register your vote and, with things pretty tight right now, you might even make a difference.
As always, use this thread to discuss the issue of FPL captains in particular and I’ll help you out by making it readily available under “Featured Discussions” in the middle column.

1st - Ron for the win
[Reply]
lampard or ronaldo?
[Reply]
Torres for of guys
[Reply]
I’ve got Lampard and Ronaldo but i think its gotta be Lampard…captaining ronnie is too much of a risk, im a utd fan and i can’t see us scoring more than 2, ronnie will score 1 goal max if that
[Reply]
Practically impossible to call. Lamps is probably statiscally the better bet. But its a brave man who bets against Ronaldo. Dunno how brave im feeling this week……
[Reply]
Reply by CK on November 6 1:42 pm:
Yeah agree. I’m gonna gamble this week against Ronaldo. He was poor last night. I’m gonna captain Lampard.
[Reply]
Reply by Qubit on November 6 1:46 pm:
Ill probably end up doing the same. Hell, they could both score 2 apiece and then we all look a mite foolish!
[Reply]
Interesting…doesn’t anyone expect Blackburn to be a stern test for Chelsea at Ewood Park. Surely Zaki - Wigan at home to Stoke - would be better?
It would be typical of Arsenal to beat United Saturday…a narrow 1 nil win.
Even if Torres is fit to start/come on as sub, how match fit will he be?
[Reply]
Reply by CK on November 6 1:47 pm:
Blackburn have McCarthy and Santa Cruz out so will threaten little. Chelsea will break them down and bag I few I reckon.
[Reply]
Reply by Qubit on November 6 1:49 pm:
Not with Blackburn lacking much upfront at the moment. As for Zaki, ive been stung too often when captaining a forward.
[Reply]
lampard it is
[Reply]
i hope all of you captain lampard, more points for me and ronny!
[Reply]
I might play it safe and go with Cech.
[Reply]
I think it will be a low scoring week. Might captain Alex.
[Reply]
Reply by TJMoray on November 6 2:38 pm:
I actually feel the safe bet this week is Lamps. He is more than likely going to get the bonus points based on previous weeks, a full 90 mins and a clean sheet. An assist should be expected and a goal could be on the cards. Ronnie on the other hand could well be rested for part of the game, come up a very defensive Arsenal and do very little. The danger with Ronnie however is he could easily score a brace/hatrick and get a cleany with a full 90 mins!! AAAAHHHHHHH my head is about explode!
[Reply]
Will toss a coin, let faith decide, between Lamps and Ron… Although Zaki and Laursen look good if one fancies a risk.
[Reply]
Agger will doo do do for me.
I can see him scoring, clean sheet and 2 bonus points!
[Reply]
Reply by Will on November 6 2:51 pm:
I’d normally never captain a defender-but I think you might be on to something DK, Liverpool are VERY likely to keep a clean sheet, and Agger is a definite goal threat… hmmm, I can see myself bottling it at 11.29 on saturday and going for Ronaldo tho!

Blackburn have won once and conceeded 8 goals in 5 games at home, chelsea have won all their away games.
Like every Ars v Mun game it will be tight.
Form = LAMPARD captain
Anyone disagree?
[Reply]
Reply by Will on November 6 2:44 pm:
I think the ManU Arsenal game depends on if Man U score relatively early. If they do then I think Wenger will be desperate to get something from the game after the last 2/3 matches and will be forced to attack more which could lead to a relatively high scoring game. But as you say the most likely outcome will be a tight game with under 2 goals scored.
[Reply]
dont think lampard will score well this week. just have a feeling he will be outscored by deco and joe cole! also think arsenal will put up a fight but will fall apart after united score. ronaldo will score a penalty and rooney will finish the game off!

i think people should not get complacent and take the crack the code guys, and to some extent MArk himself, for granted. Everyone has work and a life so if its not always accurate then so be it. But, id prefer to have some indication of prices going up and down than none altogether. It seems that the guy who was complaning should have made the move a lot sooner rather than leaving it last minute.
crack the code is the second best thing to happen. The first being Mark, of course
Ronnie for Captain!!!!
[Reply]
Reply by CK on November 6 5:27 pm:
Yes agree! (It was me complaining btw). I never noticed the “time of last update” so still thought Agger had not moved in price. My own fault!
Just to reiterate.. totally appreciate both sites and my complaint was heat of teh moment!
ps: Lampard for captain this week
[Reply]
Second-guessing the games isn’t worth the brain-power. If you bought Ronnie it’s because you thought that despite the price tag he was worth it - and for most that was compounded by the fact that he would work out at even better value if you Captained him each week.
He’s delivered 2 huge hauls in the last 2, and even though he may let off slightly this week, how can you reward his points so far with not Captaining him. Predicting he won’t score big goes against all the evidence that shows he’s getting better and better in the Prem every week.

I need a new striker to swap Ade for until he comes back from injury, in my price range are Defoe, Robinho, Anelka etc, can’t afford the Berb or Drog/Torres. Defoes fixtures look good, but will he start every game?

united generally dont score as many against big teams (goes without saying that the better a team is, the harder it is to score!). therefore, ronaldos attacking output will be less. u cant be expecting him to score 2 or 3 every game

Any thoughts on taking a gamble on Robbie Keane for the next few weeks? I am very tempted with a nice run of fixtures and with Torres back in support. Surely a few goals, assists will start to appear.
I think it could be a worthy risk. Anyone else thinking of it?
With West Brom, Bolton and Fulham up I think if ever he will be a bargain it will be now. 8.5m

dancinator, being a liverpool and robbie keane fan i sure hope so..
however i have taken the safe option and gone for torres through the next few fixtures.. albiet for berbatov
so i’m either going to regret it as torres eases back into things or im going to be swimming in el ninos point haul
[Reply]
This is a barrel-scraping Lamps stat: in the last 7 fixtures (either home or away) Chelsea have scored 2 goals or more against Blackburn on five occasions. Each time Lampard has scored at least once.
Therefore, if you fancy Chelsea to grab two goals at least on Sunday then Lamps is your man to net one..
[Reply]
Reply by Qubit on November 6 4:33 pm:
Trouble is that probably just means this will be the time he doesnt! Mind you his little chip last week was a great goal and proof he is on form
[Reply]
I reckon I will take a punt on him. The fixtures are so kind to Liverpool the next few weeks and in at least one of them games he is bound to come away with something. Rafa might see it as a chance for him to hit the goal trail too.
Plus very few people seem to have him. Early potential to sneak a few points possibly. I have convinced myself to give him a try
[Reply]
Reply by TJMoray on November 6 4:44 pm:
I reckon that’s a brave move myself. From what I have seen of Keane so far I’d imagine he won’t live up to last seasons points.
[Reply]
I’m completely torn between Ronaldo, Berbs and Zaki. Any suggestions?
[Reply]
Reply by TJMoray on November 6 4:48 pm:
Join the boat with captaincy this week. They’re all decent shouts. The only thing I would say if its 33%-33%-33% you have to go with Ronnie as he has a proven track record of scoring big most regularly and most people get him in as he has the added bonus of making captaincy easier. That’s why I’ve backed Lamps!
[Reply]
Reply by Timbo on November 6 4:56 pm:
Yeah it’s pretty even at the minute. I have a feeling that Berbs might outscore Ronny this week though. And Zaki at home to Stoke? Doesn’t get much easier…
[Reply]
I agree Moray but as yet, he has really yet to start playing for Liverpool. If he gains confidence it will most likely change everything. I just think that if he is going to start scoring, it surely will be over the next few gameweeks
[Reply]
Reply by PeteMcC on November 6 4:59 pm:
I am considering the same (re Keane). I think he will turn it on sooner or later and WBA is the perfect opportunity. However my concern is that Rafa will rest him (doesn’t he have a groin problem?). And even if he does start I doubt he will play 90 mins. Views?
[Reply]
I am not sure injury wise. I will see what the verdict is on Fri I reckon as regards fitness. I would think Rafa would want him to start if he can.
If he gets rested, I would not be happy. Even if he does not score, I can see him being involved in assists over the next few games.
[Reply]
Reply by TJMoray on November 6 5:17 pm:
As you say Dacinator he maybe worth a punt when Torres is back. For 8.5 mill I guess he offers reasonable amount of potential (I had over 9 mill in my head before I just checked). He had a couple superb touches in the CL league on Tues, especially that chest down from Alonso. That being said as a lone striker he is short on pace and the only way I can see him hitting a reasonable amount of points will be feeding off Torres and grabbing assists and the odd goal here and there. I like the look of in form Agbon at the moment. However tonights CL match will have to see Villa improve somewhat!
[Reply]
Reply by fuelled by passion on November 6 5:35 pm:
8.5 is a lot of money for an assist over the next 3 games which could quite easily be all that he gets. i’d rather invest in bent or crouch
[Reply]
I also have another option that requires some guts. Craig Bellamy. He played really well last week and is due a goal. West Ham have 2 home games in a row (Everton & Portsmouth) and then Sunderland away. He is reasonably priced at £6.4m and allows me to spend big on a midfielder next game week.
I was considering Berbatov but everyone in my league seems to have him so I will be no better off.
[Reply]
So it’s Keane, Bellamy or Berbatov for Adebayor. Opinions please.
[Reply]
Reply by Gazzamania on November 6 5:20 pm:
Of those three? Berbatron definitively, but you knew that.
However, if Zaki is not in your team yet….
[Reply]
Reply by Tycho on November 6 9:02 pm:
I went for Robinho instead of Ade. Man City has been really awful away, but good at home. Even thinking of captaining him, but I’m already safe in my group and developing hubris…
[Reply]
Rather than considering Ronaldo v Lampard week in week out, how about who will get the most points from now until May, and then just captain the winker every time?
How about that for strategy?
[Reply]
Reply by andiwulf on November 6 5:29 pm:
Agreed, as long as you can stick with it. You’d get more points overall if you correctly picked the highest scorer for captain every single week, but that would require a lot of luck. I’d go for your strategy but allow for exceptions, for example captain Lampard every week unless, say, Chelsea were playing Liverpool at the same time as United played a relegation team in which case swap for that week.
[Reply]
Does anyone have any info on precisely when the Guardian price changes are implemented? At the start of the season it always seemed to be in the early hours of Thursday morning, however last week and this week it’s been much later. This week they still haven’t appeared, and if I’d known that I’d have a waited a bit longer before making my Robinho transfer which is a bit risky given he could get injured tonight.
[Reply]
Reply by Jonny on November 6 5:51 pm:
It’s a mystery mate, the whole process of how they decide on them is pretty cryptic too. I’ve given up trying to guess it really. I wasn’t sure whether they’d not got round to it yet this week, or just whether none of the players I was monitoring had changed.
To me it’s one of the weaker parts of the game- some players seem to absolutely leap in value, whereas others just don’t change at all: Hangeland for example, who I’ve had for a while, is now in the top 10 defenders points-wise, and yet has gone up by only 0.1 since the game began. Compare this to Turner (admitedly he is THE top defender) who has gone up 2.9 since the game started.
I also think that having a deadline day, rather than prices just rising as they rise, can push you to make a horde of silly wednesday night decisions…here’s hoping your Robinho transfer wasn’t one of them!
[Reply]
Reply by dunk on November 6 7:44 pm:
They are supposed to vary in price purely on the basis of how many managers have transferred them in or out, a players form or points scoring has no effect. Thus Turner has gone up a lot because many managers have transferred him in and few have transferred him out. Hangeland may have done well, but he has not been a popular choice so has not risen greatly in value. I think it’s a realistic system, pure supply and demand stuff. I think the prices should change at midnight every Thursday, but the site is sometimes a bit slow. Good luck fellow Guardianistas.
[Reply]
Reply by andiwulf on November 6 7:59 pm:
Jonny’s point about the deadline day is spot on. Hopefully I won’t get stung this week! In any case, the more I think about it, the more I think it makes sense to ignore the deadline day and just wait a bit. The way the budgeting works in the Guardian means I’ve made a big profit and have cash to spare, so I shouldn’t worry so much about whether I lose a bit in the deal here and there. Admittedly there are the odd extreme price rises, but there are so many cheap players who are doing well it shouldn’t create a problem. So I’m going to make an effort to wait from now on. Just hope I won’t regret not having made that resolution 24 hours ago!

Think it depends where you are in the league. I am winning my work league so will let others take the risk, for me, irrespective of fixtures, if he is fit, Ronaldo is the man. Would rather have two Ronaldo’s in my team every week than one. FYI I also have Lamps and Zaki.
[Reply]
You are joking Will, Wigan have been shocking at the back and Stoke are deadly from obvious throws, can see them nicking a goal or 2.
[Reply]
Reply by Will on November 6 6:42 pm:
Nope, not joking. The odds suggest Wigan have a much better chance of a clean sheet than Portsmouth away to Sunderland. Even if they didn’t, can you say for certain that Traore will start or get more than 45 minutes? Liverpool clean sheet at Anfield is very likely-Miller will get 2 pts in all likelyhood.
Can I ask which of those 3 you’d go for then?
[Reply]
Reply by ddj on November 6 7:36 pm:
Marc3 - Remember that Stoke have a skinny pitch to take advantage of his throwing ability. All of Delap`s contributions have been in home games.
I would also go for Fig. Portsmouth are shakey right now, and there is a lot of doubt over Traore`s role anyway. Miller at Pool sounds like a no-go to me.
[Reply]
I’m thinking of shipping Adebayor out for Torres tonight, but the question is how many mins do people think he will get this weekend? It would be a 4 point hit you see, but if he does play the chances are I will make my points back easily. Also Ade is about to drop in price so now would be a good time to do it.
If I do get Torres in, who should I bench - Osman or Ireland?
[Reply]
Reply by Sam (Team Sam) on November 6 6:54 pm:
I’d leave it personally (sorry if you take my advice and Torres scores a hattrick!), but Ireland at home is a reasonable option (I’m starting with him), so why replace him with someone who might not even be fit just for the sake of 0.1mil. Just wait until next gameweek, and if Torres is fit, maybe bring him in, or maybe the cheaper Berbatov instead, and upgrade somewhere else the following week.
[Reply]
hi guys just womdering why nobody rates gerrard with liverpool at home to wba?

Lampard. Would rarely strip Ronaldo of the band but this is one of those occasions. Will United get a hatful against Arsenal at The Emirates on a Saturday lunchtime following Champions league football? Mr Fabregas is on the picth also and may curry favour with the bonus points panel. Could a slightly wounded Chelsea turn up to face a decidely average Blackburn (minus Santa Cruz & McCarthy) and potentially tear them apart on Sunday? Ronaldo is up against Fabregas, Berbatov, Rooney, maybe Tevez & Nani and possibly resolute defenders from either side. Lampard is up against Deco and whoever gets Chelsea’s goal/s & assists (which could in fact be Lampard himself). Lampard for one week only.

I’m 2000th in the whole thing, so not off to a bad start. trying to catch my mate who is 12th.. yes 12th. I have found myself mixing it with the big boys… NERVOUS!

I think he means his mate is one of the big boys. But tbh 2,000th represents the top 0.12% of fpl players-so isn’t bad.

Does anyone know why Kompany isn’t in the squad for tonight’s city game? I know he is supended at the weekend against Spurs, but is he suspended for the euro games too?
