John Carew’s bulldozing performance against a wilting Bolton defence is enough to warrant renewed attention and place him on our Watchlist. The Norwegian, with the help of Milner’s prompting and Young’s teasing, de-constructed Megson’s defence in last weekend’s 5-1 win and overshawdowed fellow striker Agbonlahor in the process, despite his goal…

It’s now a close call between the two Villa frontmen. Agbonlahor has had the form up until now with 6 goals and 2 assists to his name. However, it’s just two goals in the last six for the speed merchant. We’ve seen in previous seasons how he can comfortably settle into a pattern of a goal every three starts. It’s questionable whether his current form can warrant his price outlay given that Carew is significantly cheaper (8.5 vs 7.6 in the Fantasy Premier League game).

Carew has hit double figures for goals in his past two seasons, with 11 last season and 13 the season before that. Agbonlahor, is not far behind with 11 goals in each of his two previous seasons but wins out on assists. There’s hardly anything to separate them then – apart from the price tag.

Recent reports have O’Neill calling for consistency from Carew. That’s a reasonable demand. If it arrives, then fantasy investors can only profit. O’Neill has to play his part however – backing Carew and leaving Heskey (when fit) on the sidelines. That’s a problem for the Villa boss, given that he’ll be restricting Heskey’s chances of sealing his England World Cup place.

The other downside to this scenario is that Villa don’t have the strongest fixtures to come (bu TOT HUL mun sun). Carew will need to maximise those home games, but also has the size to disrupt the Burnley and United defences – and certainly the Sunderland backline. Arguably, Burnley and United have the tools to cope with Carew’s size – (Carlisle/Caldwell and Vidic for United), but not so much Agbonlahor’s pace. Again, it’s a close call then. For now though – I’m backing Carew to carry last weekend’s form on and provide slightly the better option for those looking to spend on the Villa attack.
