The Midweek-ish Meander

For just a brief period, let’s just forget about the turmoil the weather is causing us and pretend that the weekend fixture list will be untouched, untarnished; that our fantasy weekend will be complete and run according to plan. Hold that thought while I lead you through the games in question then, giving you my thoughts on where I see the points coming from at both ends of the field…

Best For Clean Sheets…

This looks tough again this week. Four of the current in form defences come up against each other with Birmingham facing United at St Andrews and Liverpool hosting Spurs at Anfield. It’s hard to tip clean sheets for any of that quartet then – United would probably be the strongest option of the three if you’re backing an away win.

There are still good alternatives however. Starting with Fulham up against lowly Portsmouth at the Cottage. Hodgson’s men have conceded just a single goal in their last 5 home games and will face Avram Grant’s side who have lost 4 of their last 5 on the road, scoring just 3 goals in the process. To compound matters Portsmouth go into this game without their African contingent which is likely to disrupt them further. Hangeland’s likely absence will hurt Fulham but it still screams a home win with a clean sheet.

Mancini’s City have two consecutive clean sheets in the league under his stewardship and look to have a fixture tailored made to help them record a third. Blackburn visit Eastlands with a record that shows just 4 goals in their last 8 games. Allardyce’s outfit have failed to score in 10 league games so far this term and Monday’s match could well be the latest. David Dunn should be fit to provide at least some creative spark but you have to back City for another shut-out here.

Reluctantly I also have to consider the Chelsea back four, despite a clear lack of confidence, simply because they have a decent fixture away at Hull. The home side have a fairly good record in front of their own fans of late and may nick one, but I can’t help but wonder if Ancelotti will play a tighter game without Drogba and come home with a narrow win and an eleventh clean sheet of the season.

Aston Villa are on their travels this week but pay a visit to a Wigan side who have just one win in their last 8 games. Wigan have six goals in their last 5 home games – no a massive return, while Villa have conceded just 6 goals in their last 8 league games – all of those goals have been away from Villa Park though. A long-ish shot then but Villa appear to present reasonable value for a cleanie.

For other long shots you can look to Burnley against Stoke, although it’s far from clear cut. Burnley are in a state of transition following the Owen Coyle saga but they are up against a Stoke side who have recorded just a single goal in their last 5 away games. Similarly you could consider West Ham at home to a Wolves side who have also struggled for goals. Three strikes in their last 5 away games tells you that Zola’s men have a decent chance of a cleanie here.

Best For Goals…
There are three sides that stand out for me – all of which look ready and able to dish out heavy defeats to their opponents. As mentioned previously, Fulham have the form at the Cottage and are up against a Portsmouth side fighting for Premier League breath and without their African contingent. It’s got to be a home win with two or three goals thrown in, making Murphy and particularly Dempsey strong candidates for your mid-price money this gameweek.

Similarly City look to have the platform to continue their run of form under Mancini with a home fixture against Blackburn on Monday. Tevez is in outstanding form while Bellamy and Robinho are playing for their starting roles. Again, a two or three goal return for the home side looks likely.

Finally you’ve got Chelsea up against a Hull defence who have conceded 9 goals in their last 5 home games. We’re not quite sure how Ancelotti will set his side up without Drogba and much will depend on the availability of Anelka. I suspect that we might see a more conservative approach from Chelsea throughout January but they still look good for a couple of goals at the very least from this game.

I also see goals shared in the Sunderland vs Bolton fixture. Bolton arrive without a clean sheet all season and although Sunderland aren’t flying in terms of form, they are scoring goals again having notched 6 in their last 3 league games. I can see these sides producing three or four goals between them at the very least.

Finally there’s always Arsenal of course. It’s hard to see less than a couple of goals in their encounter with Everton with the visitors still troubled by injuries. Moyes’ side have conceded just 2 goals in their last 3 league games however, while Arsenal, as we know, have been robbed of so much attacking creativity through injury. I’m not backing a big win for the Gunners then – they may well have to sneak this one with a second-half goal if they fail to break through early.

Best For Frustration…

Look no further than the aforementioned Birmingham vs United and Liverpool vs Spurs fixtures. In fantasy terms, it’s hard to tip returns here. United have very strong goalscoring form but come up against the best defence in the league on current form. A tight away win looks the most likely result but I’m still hesitant to recommend United investment given Birmingham’s confidence into this game.

At Anfield meanwhile, we have a stuttering Liverpool side, up against Spurs who have struggled away from home. Redknapp’s men have scored 19 goals in their last 8 league games but only 5 goals in their last 5 away trips. On the flipside they have stiffened up considerably in defence, with 5 consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. That new defensive resolve could well frustrate Rafa’s men and lead to a very tight encounter here. I can’t see heavy fantasy returns for either side.

Paddy Says…
Let’s round things off by taking a look at how our friends at Paddy Power are sizing up the gameweek fixtures. In terms of clean sheets, they are offering the shortest odds on Chelsea at Hull, with City at home to Blackburn and United at Birmingham just behind. Fulham and Arsenal come next in their reckoning. Personally, I’m a little surprised that they fancy United over Fulham and I’m also not totally convinced about Arsenal at home to Everton without Song in the midfield.

When it comes to goals, again Paddy likes the look of Chelsea at Hull but they also see goals at Arsenal vs Everton, City vs Blackburn and Liverpool vs Spurs. I’m certainly not sold on that last game – as mentioned I see that one be a tight encounter. I much prefer the Sunderland vs Bolton game and like the look of Paddy’s odds of 10/1 on 4 goals in that one.

As per usual I’ve lined up some Fantasy Football Scout specials with Paddy this week. In the clean sheet accumulator you can get 6/1 on Fulham, City and Chelsea all keeping clean sheets in the gameweek. While in the Scout Picks market, Paddy are offering 9/1 on Lampard, Bent and Tevez all scoring one or more goals this weekend. Dive in if you fancy those odds – Paddy’s offer of a free £20 bet when you register via this site and bet a tenner still stands of course.

players who had 5 yellow cards or below that, have their cards been wiped clean?

    • Applebonkers says:

not wiped clean but they will now need 10 yellows for a suspension

    • Applebonkers says:

and also once they get 10 yellows it’s a 2 game ban not 1 game

      • I thought you only get a two game ban if you’d previously had a one game ban. Surely if a player’s benefited from an amnesty to avoid a ban, ten cards will only get them a single?

My understanding is that every time a player receives a ban – of any length – an extra game is added onto any further ban attracted during that season.

  2. james says:

when do teams give notice about calling of names is threr a time limt eg can be less then 1 day before match is meant to go ahead

    • Wingnut-74 says:

Teams rarely call off games. It’s the Health & Safety people in these cases. I think it’s discretion really on the time of the announcement – giving people enough time to bail out if needs be.

      • The-Hunt says:

        Health & Safety Nazis!

        AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!

I saw on the news this week that certain schools wouldn’t let kids out to play in the snow just in case they started throwing snow-balls!!

        BASTARDS!!!!

    • If it’s about the pitch, the ref will call it on the day; he can even call the match off when all the players are on the pitch ready to kick off if he wants to.

If it’s about the area around the stadium that is a decision made in consultation between the club, the local council and the local police. Such a decision would normally be announced beforehand, and would have to be some hours before a game. This is not a rule, but more out of courtesy to all parties involved – especially the spectators whose safety is being considered.

  3. Raccoon says:

Starting to get my team together, quick poll on which 2 to play from:

    Dunne (away to wigan)
    Cahill (away to sunderland)
    Shawcross (away to Burnley)

I’m thinking Dunne Cahill, but opinions, as ever, welcome.

  4. marvellus says:

Planning on leaving any transfer to last minute, anyone got any advice?? only got one transfer, zilch in bank. Considering Sturridge in for Zamora:
    Jensen (sorensen)
    evra ivanovic scharner hangeland (song)
OHara Fabs Arsh (c, maybe) Milner MTaylo
    roons (c, maybe) defoe (zamora)

    Cheers folks.

    • Getting Sturridge in for Zamora seems a very reasonable shout to me. I think Sturridge will get some games whilst Drogba is away and at the modest price he is worth a gamble imho.

      • Wingnut-74 says:

Are you taking the gamble on Sturridge JOMT?

        • I might well do – I am keeping a close eye on that Sunderland v Bolton game, since I was putting Cahill and Klasnic in my team this week. The weather aint great in the North-East tonight and I would probably do Klasnic > Sturridge as an emergency option if the game was postponed. I also have to ship out Andy Reid for possibly Collison also.

          • Wingnut-74 says:

I have Cahill but I’m benching him for this Away game, I have Bent up the other end with a hat-trick in his boots hopefully!
I did my transfer early, Tevez < Drogba but I also have the Andy Reid problem. Collison is a good shout – great fixtures (listed on this page somewhere).
Are you prepared to take a big points hit? I see you're not a fan of them like me.

      • marvellus says:

Didn’t realise Fabs was still out, if Hangeland is out too that means 5 unavailable. Nice. Guess I need to take a hit:
Zamora and Song OUT for Sturridge and … MRichards, or a better defender for max 6.1m??

  5. aleef7 says:

hey guys my team for this week:

    Sorenson
Evra, R Johnson, A Cole, Vermaelen
    Lampard, Sanili, Valencia
    Tevez, Torres, Bent

    Sub: Hart, Cahill, Cohen, Mullins

guys wat do u think bout the team??? plus who do u think wud b a good pik for captain and which keeper shud i play???? sorenson or hart???

  6. rasher says:

any suggestions?getting rid of cohen for- ramsey(prob playing 1 match) boetang (pompey suck) or gera(rotation risk but hitting form with fulham)????

    • razor says:

I think stick with Cohen until Sat anyway as Bolton now have 2 games in hand which could mean 2 DGWs or a triple GW. I have a sneaky suspicion it will be 2 doubles and one of them could be in GW22. Just wait til Sat for more info.
Also its hard to give out advice for what you want unless you post or link your whole team.

    • Frayed says:

I wouldn’t get Ramsey in. Wenger has already indicated Denilson will take Songs spot which leaves Ramsey on cameos only

      • MFaulkner says:

doesn’t it leave Ramsey to play Fabregas’ role?

If Rasher’s willing to have him for an in-and-out job, knowing he probably won’t start any more than one game, then I don’t see why not.

As a longer-ish term option, Gera’s the best of that lot (not a great lot it has to be said). He’ll probably continue to get starts if he plays well, and might even be pushed up alongside AJ to add some height to a Zamora-less front line – although I’d class Dempsey as favourite of the midfielders to be pushed forward, leaving Gera on the left.

  7. fleeto2009 says:

make your changes on saturday morning guys. it’s too early to risk putting in players who might not actually play at all imo. good luck if you have already! ;)

    • Cesc Machine says:

Actually not too bad if they dont play as subs kick in. Rotation is a worse thing in my opinion. ala Acole against Fulham. messes everything up

  8. dann17 says:

Which three out of R Johnson/Dann/Etherington/Faye/Sorensen/Hart should I play?

  9. Uncle Ben says:

There’s precedent for GW23 being brought forward to accomodate the Utd Hull game, so I wouldn’t be banking too heavily on GW22 being a doubler at the moment. Until it’s confirmed on the FPL website in the fixtures, it’s uncertain what’s happening.

    • fleeto2009 says:

they can’t though. it is confirmed on the stoke website. it doesn’t have to be on the fpl website for it to actually be confirmed 100%.

      • Uncle Ben says:

What has the Stoke website got to do with FPL?

FPL can change the opening and closing dates for any of their gameweeks, and have done so in the past to accomodate fixture changes.

        • fleeto2009 says:

they can’t move a whole gw forward. there’s league cup games on and other obstacles.

          • Uncle Ben says:

What do league cup games have to do with FPL gameweeks?

            • fleeto2009 says:

because you said why can’t a gw be brought forward. it can’t be because of the league cup games midweek and fa cup on the w’end.

              • Uncle Ben says:

I’m never going to be able to explain this to you.

                • fleeto2009 says:

it will be played gw22. end of.

                • Applebonkers says:

uncle ben i feel bad for you man. it is almost impossible to explain exactly why fleeto is talking nonsense even though he is.

                  • fleeto2009 says:

eh , i know exactly what he said u muppet. bring the gw deadline forward? it’s a load of rubbish. i was saying that the fpl won’t do it just to accomodate man u v hull being played gw23.

                  • Applebonkers says:

your view that the gw deadline wont be pulled forward just to accommodate the man utd hull game is completely valid. but your point you were making was the deadline cant be pulled forward because of completely unrelated cup games which is what is nonsense.
lol and again thinking i’m having a go at you not understanding what he said kinda highlights my point about you.

        • fleeto2009 says:

plus, the fa cup is on the weekend of 23 jan

        • Andy says:

I personally can’t recall a gameweek pulled forward before, only fixtures added onto the end of gameweeks – and the precedent of all those this season lead us to lie with what we have. That’s why we here at Fantasy Football Scout are working under the best assumptions we can – as are the posting community on the site.

Yes, however though, until the FPL actually confirms it they can be nothing other than best estimated guesses.

          • cheggars123 says:

Middlesbrough had a game before early on a Thursday.

            It has happened.

Wait and see… either way United are worth it

          • fleeto2009 says:

it’s up on the stoke website if u look

            • Andy says:

              a) what has the Stoke website got to do with Manchester United vs Hull?

              b) You show me the page on the Stoke website that says Manchester United vs Hull City has been rearranged for January 23rd so will categorically be played in gameweek 22 of the Fantasy Premier League game. You can’t. We know the game is on that date, we just don’t know when FPL will plot it yet for certain – just our best estimations.

It’s likely, but it’s not definite.

Again your oblivious nature and ignorance is getting the better off you here I’m sorry to say.

      • alsybach says:

it does when determining in which week its gonna be played

  10. ball.john says:

o’hara or huddlestone? or make a transfer with +2.6 mil to spare

  11. james says:

in the past the deadlines always stayed the same so id say will be a double gw hope not tho

  12. cheggars123 says:

I think the Man U v Hull fixture will take place on GW23… it’ll just be early

    • fleeto2009 says:

      it can’t be man.

      man u fixtures:

      16/1 gw22 burnley h
      19/1 lc man city a
      23/1 gw23 no game
      27/1 man city h

      • Andy says:

fleeto I don’t know how you don’t get it – the cup games don’t matter in the slightest. What is being said is the deadline for GW23 can be brought forward to say 11:30am on January 23rd (for example) so then Manchester United vs Hull City still lies in the remit of said gameweek.

Like I said, I can’t recall it happening before and it seems unlikely to occur to me – but people say it has happened before and I have no reason not to believe them. Until FPL plots the fixtures there is a chance.

        So it is possible.

  13. Soup Or Man says:

Wow! The highest scorer for this GW has made 71 transfers!!!

    • MFaulkner says:

There’s a distinct possibility he could be someone going for monthly prizes rather than an overall score. When FPL count up points over a month, they don’t include transfer hits, so if you’re going for the top spot in the world for the month, or even just the top spot in your mini-league that offers monthly pay-outs, you can make as many transfers as you wish.

Either that or he’s another Wassup.

    • drughi says:

and i thought my 30 was many, guess not

  14. Dilzy says:

    :(
    Sorensen hart
    a.cole evra traore dunne bikey(yes, i know he’s gone)
    arshavin diaby a.reid etherington m.taylor
    rooney tevez torres
    0.2 in the bank :( :(

  15. dann17 says:

    Team for this GW..

    Sorensen
    Evra – R Johnson – A Cole
    Duff – Milner – Arshavin – Petrov – Etherington
    Tevez (c) – Rooney

    Subs: Hart, Faye, Dann, Zamora?

Completed transfers this week but suggestions are obviously welcome for next GW or whatever. Was considering putting Faye in but thought I’d be on the safe side and cover Birmingham as I know there is a freak chance of a clean sheet, have I done the right thing with the line up, could still put in Faye, maybe instead of Etherington, choices?

    • Cesc Machine says:

I reckon Sorensen will still be out if his hand was bad on tuesday?? But guess its not too important as sub will kick in
I d swap To Faye at the back to cover Brum and Stoke

  16. Specific Zod says:

    Diaby or Arshavin? No, seriously.

  17. Specific Zod says:

If only Arshavin was one or even acted like one.

  18. Henry Hill says:

Is Anelka fit to start against Hull lads?

  19. Rambo says:

is arshavin and reid -> milner and dempsey (providing all games are on) worth it for -4? means i can field 11 decent players and carry fabregas

    thx

  20. irishman says:

    Kuszczak
    Alexander, Scharner, Dunne, Evra
    Arshavin, Reid, Milner
    Rooney, Diamanti, Bent
    Subs: Sorensen, O’Hara, Dempsey, Samba

    hi all,
i have two free transfers this week and 5.7 in the bank
    im thinking
    Kuszczak >>> Given
    Reid >>> Diaby
i have too many man u players! (im putting dempsey in for scharner
open to any suggestins thanks in advance:D

    • SammyC says:

Given and Sorensen both don’t play gw23 and Arsenal’s fixtures get bad very soon

    • Andy says:

*editors note* – list your teams like I have changed it to in future – it is aesthetically more pleasing, easier to understand and takes up less space.

When it comes to your transfers – selling Kuszczak is a crab move not worth taking. Man City & Stoke both don’t take part in gameweek 23, and Man United all but certain to be joining them off the schedule too so you will have no goalkeeper – you need to find someone else to buy in-between the stick.

Diaby is okay – that’s probably as good as I can stretch with my views on him, it’s an alright move. At least he’ll seemingly keep playing etc but doesn’t stir any fires inside me.

      • The-Hunt says:

        Goebbels says…

      • Frosty says:

        in your opinion that is.

        • Andy says:

Yes fleeto, it is definitely my opinion that it now takes up 5 lines whereas before it took up 15 lines on the page – that being the main cohesive problem.

I’m not exactly cracking skulls here, I think we can forgive such things to be honest here even if you may have preferred it as one long list.

      • irishman says:

Thanks I’ll right like that nxt time I need advice
diaby isn’t that bad of a move?
Still unsure bout the goalkeeper situation…
        I’m thinking bout cech??

    • Kuszcak > Robinson & Reid > Collison maybe?

  21. Trilogist says:

    Sorenson, Robinson
    Dunne, ShawX, Verm, Cahill, Corluka
    Milner, Arshavin, Bowyer, Diaby, Etherington
    Rooney, Torres, Tevez

What your starting XI for this weekend based on current news and whos your captain?

Also, I have a free transfer and 0.1m in bank, any reccomendations?

  22. aidy_7f says:

    Jensen

    Evra A.Cole Vermaelen Agger

    Etherington Gerrard Arshavin Valencia

    Klasnic Benitez

    Subs: Penny, Cahill, O’Hara, Zamora.

Does that seem strong enough for this weekend? and any ideas about a captain?

    • You are a bit light up front. See my post below as you fit into the category of an Arshavin owner who does not have Lamps or Tevez.

      • aidy_7f says:

Yeah the plan for the next few weeks, is to transfer out arshavin and A.cole or Vermaelen, and get in someone like Torres, Rooney, or Bellamy for the DGW Man City have soon.

        • I think you need to pave the way to get Rooney in for gw22 which could be a double gamesweek for United (to be confirmed).

          • aidy_7f says:

That’s the plan so far. I’ll have to take a 4 point hit, but that will be gotten back hopefully. Then I can take Torres in for GW 23.

            Thanks JOMT

      • JOMT’s right about being light up front – you’ve easily overspent on defenders.

The team may all play, but longer term perhaps look to rebalance some money from defence to other areas, so you don’t have to rely on cheapies. And you’re taking a lot of points hits.

        • aidy_7f says:

Yeah i took Zamora in for Drogba, for the DGW and game against Portsmouth, but that failed.

I plan to get rid of one or two of my expensive DF’s and Arshavin, to strengthen up front.

          thanks :)

  23. Dare I mention this to Arshavin owners (who do not have Lamps and Tevez – like me)….a) Are you going to captain him and b) are you getting rid of him after this gw?

At the moment I am answering yes to both questions.

    • Andy says:

He plays in GW23 (one must assume) …so he stays for me.

      Not even entertaining captaining him.

    • Trilogist says:

that dwarf is never wearing the armband in my team again, the sod even brought that russian weather with him lol.

not bitter at all ha ha

      • That’s two for a no then; not sure who else I could contemplate captaining to be honest with you…

        • aidy_7f says:

I was thinking about him, they’re at home after all, but I’m going to go with Gerrard I think.

Just disappointed about his returns against Portsmouth..

        • Andy says:

I’m reasonably content in captaining Rooney, a simple 1-0 victory (even with a contentious penalty) could very easily be on the cards and that’ll hand Rooney 9 points right there – obviously it’s speculation, but isn’t the whole game?

I don’t think Birmingham are impenetrable(?) and but for Joe Harts wonder saves recently, Chelsea (and others) could have scored a fair few goals.

I’m not a big (fantasy) fan of Milner, but against Wigan is a leftifeld choice – almost on par with Arshavin to be honest the amount I trust his performances to date.

        • Take a moment to reflect on whether going leftfield with Ivanovich is madness or foolish enough to give you a return.

        • Seanigula says:

I’d consider both Evra and Ivanovic (I don’t have Tevez or Lamps…not really sold on Rooney or Arsh)…maybe even Milner

  24. TorresMagic says:

Looks a quiet day on the Price Changes front.

    No one should go up.
FT has Drogba to go down.
CTC has Lucas to go down.

We will find out in 10 minutes or so.

  25. goblinz says:

hey guys need some help with my team for the manutd dgw:
    sorenson(hart)
    evra dunne scharner cahill faye
    tuncay lamp shavin milner eagles
    defoe roda tevez

the only way to take in both rooney and valencia is to sell shavin for valencia and either defoe/tevez for rooney, it will take a 4 pt hit. would u guys advice me to do this? considering both of these strikers have nice fixtures

  26. badker says:

    Evening guys.

This is the provisional team for this week. Any thoughts at this late hour? Haven’t a great choice as keeper this week. But Hart will get save points. I know Fabs prob won’t play but stranger things have happened,if not Taylor to come in.Prob capt Demps or Torres.

    Hart (Sor)
    Evra,Ivanovic,Hughes,Gallas (Shaw)
    Demps,Fab,Milner (Taylor,O’Hara)
    Defoe,Torres,Eduardo

Might keep transfers til next week. See how O’Hara pans out. Can you see anyone i should get in?

  27. TorresMagic says:

    Prices change in

Vedran Corluka has gone up in price to 5.3 million

Sam Vokes has gone down in price to 4.2 million
David Edwards has gone down in price to 4.1 million

A few stats to ponder over before making that all important substitution this week-end…

Blackburn have only once conceded more than one goal in their last five away games (Tevez …hmmmmm)

Birmingham concede an average of less than a goal a game at home. (Rooney…hmmmmm)

Aston Villa have only had one clean sheet in their last eight away games…(Dunne…hmmmmm)
