The Watchlist – Michael Turner

Michael Turner provided strong value last season, returning four goals to help mask the porosity of the Hull defence. This season’s move to Sunderland looked set to help Turner build on that first Premier League season and establish him as a potential bargain in fantasy terms. It hasn’t turned out that way. Sunderland have returned just five clean sheets so far this term, while Turner has only found the net once with two assists thrown in.

Crucially, while Turner stood out in the Hull defence allowing him to return an impressive 23 bonus points in the Fantasy Premier League game, this season he has failed to catch the eye and brought in just two bonus points.

Why be tempted to look at Turner now then? Quite simply because Sunderland have four home games in the next five gameweeks, plus a double fixture in gameweek 31. Bolton, City, Birmingham and Spurs visiting the Stadium of Light over the course of the next five gameweeks. Those first three opponents arrive in consecutively, starting this weekend with the woefully out of form Bolton in town…

Sunderland’s own form is far from electric but it’s worth noting that they have lost only one in the last five home games, conceding just four goals in the process. Indeed, in the last three games at the Stadium of Light, Steve Bruce’s side have let in just a single goal having kept clean sheets against Stoke and Fulham.

While investment in Sunderland in their current run of form can only be considered a gamble, Turner is available for a budget price (4.4 in the Fantasy Premier League game) and brings clean sheet potential in addition to his goal threat from set-plays. With Andy Reid currently laid low and Darren Bent struggling to find a place in our lineups with Drogba, Rooney, Torres and even Bendtner to consider up front, Turner in the Black Cats defence, could well emerge as the best option for those looking for a differential to capitalise on Sunderland’s decent run of games.

There is one caveat to consider however. Turner has picked up bookings in his last two matches, giving him a total of eight for the season. He is therefore just two bookings away from a two-match suspension. With the curfew for ten bookings set for April 11, Turner has seven games between now and that date to navigate without picking up two yellows. This looks unlikely although before the defeat to Arsenal on February 20, Turner had gone nine games without a caution.

Off out now, but what does everyone think of my team:

    Sorensen
    Carragher, Baines, Ridgewell, Ricketts
    N’Zogbia, Fletcher, Fabregas (c), Lee
    Rooney, Bendtner

    Subs: Gomes, Drogba, Ivanovic, Modric

I did Baird > Baines. Duff > Lee. Then a few people said to do Rodallega > Bendtner.

  2. alonbe says:

    plan A:
now : Dawson , Shawx > Distin, Ridgewell
next : Kuyt, Lee > Milner, Young

    plan B:
now : Dawson, Shawx > Baines, Ridgewell
    next : Kuyt, N’Zog > Milner, Young

  3. Which midfielder for less than about 8.5m will get most points this week?

    • Churchill says:

Design & build your own time machine. Use it to jump into the future, then jump back to the present day & you’ll not only have the answer to your question. But the highest scoring team for this week.

    • alonbe says:

      valencia?

    • haxman says:

Probably none. They’ll all be injured this week the way things are going.

I suppose Valencia would be a shout, or Taylor if you think Bolton will do well in their double (wouldn’t hold my breath though)

      • Bedok says:

Who knows? Go for Valencia or Nani (or both and bench one), otherwise anyone from Arsenal under that amount who might play. But too risky? Arteta? Who knows? If I had that much to dump, I’d probably go for Valencia.

  4. Milan says:

Phil Brown is really starting to get on my nerves with this “Bullard set to play a part” stories every week. WILL HE START OR BE ON THE BENCH, PHIL? Reminds me of Allardyce/Dunn soap opera.

  5. MCK N says:

the age old question this season?

    sorenson (v burnley)
    hart (v pompey)

    • ben says:

neither will keep a clean sheet i dont think.
      coin toss?
On gut feel I’d favour sorensen, but I have no real reason for this!

  6. bantasybootball says:

will distin start or whats happening these days with evertons back 4. who will jagielka replace at the back?

    • MCK N says:

i reckon it will be baines hetinga jagielka neville

      • ben says:

i think distin will start, he is an out and out CB

      • Monklane says:

No-one knows. My best guess: Heitinga to right back, Neville to midfield holding role, Distin to stay.

        • jimnastics says:

Without Fellaini, pushing Neville into the midfield holding role seems the glaringly obvious choice now Jags is back. I’m sure Distin will play.

  7. newplayer says:

    dann,insua,tomkins
    lee,gerrard,fab(c),valencia

got mcCarthy, scharner on bench if any out.
    sound ok?

  8. Boss Hogg says:

Got lost at the very bottom of the previous page so here goes again…

When do Portsmouth lose their 9 points?
    Is there an appeal?
Any chance they might not lose the points?

  9. Little Lukin says:

Ravaged by injuries and injury doubts AGAIN!!!!! – O’Hara, Etherington, Rooney, Scharner, N’Zogbia.

Dawson, Cech and Lampard out, Matty Taylor struggling.

    Been like this all season

  10. lawman says:

Ok last time i will confirm this, unless the Rooney injury is confirmed he is out, then i might change it :)
    Hughes to Distin

    Hart
    Distin, Verm, Insua
    Lee, Fabregas, Bowyer, N’Zogbia, Pienaar
    Bendy, Rooney

    Bench: Sorensen, Drogba, Ivanovic, Dawson

    Seem ok?

  11. tboggie says:

    OUT: Saha
    IN: Torres or Bent ?

  12. Tommy J says:

Great qualifying week! I can almost get a team of non-playing/doubts/question marks:

    Shawcross/Dunne/Ricketts
    Duff/Gera/Nzogbia
    Drogba/Rooney/Tevez

    Ouch!

  13. adi-wazza says:

im so confused ..whether to rope distin or any sundlnd or wst ham defender..who should i rope in for 5.2??

  14. Tommy K says:

would a mere 8 players playing this week be about average?

    • adi-wazza says:

      depends..how they perform…

      • si says:

I guess the question was if this was an average number of players? I imagine so but loads will takes hits to fill a team.

Amazingly I have 12 that could play and I am saving a transfer! Now, that is what I call planning :)

        Buggered next week though.

  15. dan says:

Guys a little help please i’m making 3 transfers
    1. Baird out Baines In
    2. Dawson out Ricketts In
    3. Murphy out – 7.8 to spend on Mid any suggestions?

  16. mosch1one says:

Anyone got any news on Diaby or Carr’s fitness? I have about 5 players playing now Rooney is out and I’m top of all my leagues (pretty much). Gutted.

Was hoping to do Diaby in for Carr (long term) but probably not worth it unless he is 100% going to play as I have so little players playing!!

    • si says:

“now Rooney is out”. What’s old SAF been saying now, the little rascal?

  17. Milan says:

MIchael Turner sees some parallels between Sunderland form this season and Hull’s decline last season. What’s the only common factor? You, you idiot!!!

  18. si says:

“Burnley look to Alexander to contain Fabregas”

He is about 93 and just come back from injury.

    Erm, Fabregas (c).

  19. Bedok says:

Is Micheal Tuner going to actually show up on the Watchlist? Why him? I read the article, but just don’t get the point. 8 yellows, Sunderland sucks, the guy has turned in 50 points to date.
