Gerrard Gesture To Go Unpunished?

Steven Gerrard is set to escape FA action according to a report from the Daily Mail this afternoon.

Gerrard appeared to flick a V-sign, whilst allegedly mouthing an obscenity at referee Andre Marriner in last night’s 1-0 defeat at Wigan following his booking late on. There were plenty of reports today indicating that the Liverpool skipper could face FA action but this latest article suggests that Marriner was aware of the incident and is prepared to overlook the matter, dismissing it as “a momentary act of frustration not worthy of any further sanction.”

The report goes on to state that the FA share Marriner’s view and are unlikely to take further action against Gerrard. If confirmed and that’s a big “if”, the news would come as a major relief to Gerrard owners and those contemplating investment in the midfielder…

Liverpool face Portsmouth next Monday in a must-win game and a fixture that would appear to hand Gerrard and Fernando Torres the opportunity to raise their fantasy profiles. Given the impotent display from Rafa’s men last night, there is unlikely to be a clamour to sign the pairing, despite their obvious potential as end of season diffrentials. Gerrard has notched just a single goal and assist in his last seven league starts – hardly the form that offers a viable alternative to Cesc Fabregas or Frank Lampard as a heavy-hitting midfield signing.

Big shots don’t get punished. If Wayne Bridge slept with John Terry’s wife he would have been evicted from the national team.

i actually think you may be right in some respects,
i could easily see a media driven clamour for wayne bridge to be removed if the roles were reversed.

      • tosey says:

i see what u r saying but surely rio ferdinands 8 month ban is a prime example of a ‘big shot’ getting punished?

        • Milan says:

Missing drug tests is obligatory and FA was under pressure from the Olympic comittee. It is equal to him been caught drugged. Missing a test is punishable by 1 year+ suspension in other Olympic sports. Look at Mutu punishment, and then say that Rio was harshly punished.

Smacks of John Terry’s rescinded red at Eastlands last season.

    • abreu says:

Yup, because he is a big shot captain and national key player, he probably ment something positive about giving that v-sign.
      Case closed.

      • MFaulkner says:

Gerrard was telling himself to peace-out. How arrogant of that egomaniac Andre Mariner to think that Captain Fantastic™ was making that sign at him.

    • Matty D says:

Steven Gerrard could run naked through the streets of Manchester screaming racial epithets at passers-by whilst skewering kittens on spikes and the F.A. would probably put that down to a “momentary act of frustration not worthy of any further sanction” as well.

    Is Bullard worth a punt?

Arsenal defender William Gallas could be on the sidelines for another month with calf trouble. (More)

What do you make of this? Campbell worth a shout at 4.8?!

  4. dbronaldo says:

what has Mc Mcarty to gain by publicly revealing his team every week 4 or 5days before a game?
if the argument is to give confidence to the players that he trusts them he can just announce the team in private and say this behind clsoe doors,
his team is poor enough not to have the added burden of oppositon knowing for definite each week who will play and in what formation,

perfect time to practice the set up in trainning when you know exactly whats ahead, if he kept his mouth shut he could have left some possibilty for change open and not given opposition such certainty,
theres no ‘ but what if wolves play 2 up top this week ‘ scenario to worry or work on this week when he publically announces his team on a tuesday!

Gerrard is quite clearly signaling to the referee the number 2.

As in “That’s only my second foul this game” or similar ;)

  6. Big Dunc says:

Depending on Rodwell, current plan is

    GW31 Hart -> Friedel
GW32 Lee & Kuyt -> Rodwell and Lampard

God i wish i knew what David Moyes is going to do with his midfield though. I’ve been talking up Rodwell for weeks now but its as clear as mud what he’ll do when Cahill and Saha come back, and still havent transferred him in.

From recent performances, Heitenga looks nailed on in DM. Hes allowed Arteta to come forwards more and Everton were playing great attacking football as a result. With Osman out and hopefully Saha back (meaning hes unlikely to play Yak and Anichebe again), he would be a shoe in but with cahill back the only way to get Rodwell in would be to play a 5 man midfield with Arteta on the wing, and Rodwell and Cahill in the centre. Arteta is used to that position but he just looked so good playing through the middle i cant see it. Hopefully we will get a clearer idea this weekend……?

Annoying thing about this is that if i do Friedel then Lamps next week, I cant afford O Hara instead so will need to decide this week or else keep Lee and lose Evra instead which i really dont want to do.

    Any thoughts?

  7. Actually Gerrard was signalling to Jamie Carrager – ‘Two pints and it’s your turn!’…
