Steven Gerrard is set to escape FA action according to a report from the Daily Mail this afternoon.

Gerrard appeared to flick a V-sign, whilst allegedly mouthing an obscenity at referee Andre Marriner in last night’s 1-0 defeat at Wigan following his booking late on. There were plenty of reports today indicating that the Liverpool skipper could face FA action but this latest article suggests that Marriner was aware of the incident and is prepared to overlook the matter, dismissing it as “a momentary act of frustration not worthy of any further sanction.”

The report goes on to state that the FA share Marriner’s view and are unlikely to take further action against Gerrard. If confirmed and that’s a big “if”, the news would come as a major relief to Gerrard owners and those contemplating investment in the midfielder…

Liverpool face Portsmouth next Monday in a must-win game and a fixture that would appear to hand Gerrard and Fernando Torres the opportunity to raise their fantasy profiles. Given the impotent display from Rafa’s men last night, there is unlikely to be a clamour to sign the pairing, despite their obvious potential as end of season diffrentials. Gerrard has notched just a single goal and assist in his last seven league starts – hardly the form that offers a viable alternative to Cesc Fabregas or Frank Lampard as a heavy-hitting midfield signing.
