Scout Scribbles- Spurs Duo On Course for Gunners Return

Rafael Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor are winning their fitness battles ahead of Spurs’ trip to Arsenal this Sunday. The FA rescind Rory Delap’s three-match ban. Chris Samba may return for Blackburn at City, David Vaughan could be back for Sunderland, while reports suggest John Terry may be set for an extended spell on the sidelines:

Rafael Van der Vaart had some good news for his Fantasy owners ahead of Sunday’s north London derby. The Dutchman –who hasn’t played since limping out of the Gameweek 23 win over Wigan with a calf problem- gave an injury update via his official website yesterday, which indicates he may well be on course for a return against Arsenal:

I’m recovering well from my injury. I expect to be joining the team training next Wednesday after which I will start to focus on the match against Arsenal. I’ll be happy to play Arsenal, I can’t wait.

Emmanuel Adebayor also used social media as a platform to serve notice of his own progress from injury. The on-loan forward missed out on Spurs’ FA Cup draw at Stevenage due to a knee problem and was initially rated as doubtful for the match by Harry Redknapp, but has tweeted earlier this morning:

Just finished training, really happy with the progress, knee is looking much better. Working on my fitness for Sunday.

Adebayor has started all but one of Spurs’ fixtures since joining on loan, with a game against parent club Man City his only absence. The 21 point Fantasy haul in Gameweek 25 has seen almost 17,000 managers snap up his services ahead of the Gunners showdown- a return to fitness will be a welcome relief for those who have drafted him in. Harry Redknapp is likely to be cautious with Van der Vaart, though, given the Dutchman’s ongoing injury problems and, with Louis Saha bagging a brace in his first full appearance, there may well be question marks against a starting role for Van der Vaart, regardless of his availability.

The Mirror have published an article this afternoon which suggests John Terry could be facing a prolonged period on the sidelines. The Chelsea skipper has missed the last three league games with a knee problem but it is alleged he struggled in training yesterday and, with his condition worsening overnight, could be facing “a small procedure” to rectify the injury, forcing him out for a couple of months. The London club have yet to comment but, if true, his absence perhaps makes the starting place of Branislav Ivanovic more secure – Andre Villas-Boas has been sparing in his use of Gary Cahill and with Jose Bosingwa defensively susceptible, the Serb’s versatility could give his game time a boost.

Per Mertesacker has taken to Facebook to update his recent ankle surgery. The German was subbed off at Sunderland in Gameweek 25, with Arsene Wenger admitting last week he expects the injury to be “long term”. Mertesacker’s comments, regarding the seriousness of the injury, certainly suggests he may well be set to miss much –if not all- of the remainder of the Gunners’ season:

My participation in Euro 2012 is not in danger. Dr Stöckle in Tübingen did the operation on Tuesday evening, attached a piece of bone back to the ankle and patched up the deltoid ligament on the inside of the ankle. All went well and I’m in Donaustauf, Bavaria, for the physical rehabilitation.

Wenger received a little more positive news on Carl Jenkinson’s injury situation. The right-back has been sidelined since Gameweek 11 due to a back problem but is expected to turn out for Arsenal reserves against Norwich today as he continues to progress towards full fitness.

The FA have today overturned the three-match suspension handed out to Rory Delap. The Stoke midfielder was handed a straight red card for dangerous play in the weekend FA Cup win at Crawley Town but has won his appeal and is now available to play with immediate effect.

Tomasz Kuszczak has joined Watford on an emergency loan deal until the end of the season. The Polish international has slipped to fourth in the goalkeeper pecking order, with Ben Amos afforded a rare start in Gameweek 23 against Stoke, when both David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard were unavailable. Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed earlier this month the keeper will leave Old Trafford this summer on a free transfer, after refusing to sign a new contract.

Joe Allen expects to be fit and available for Swansea’s trip to Stoke on Sunday. The midfielder has been a key part of the Welsh club’s midfield three this term but was forced to skip the Gameweek 25 match against Norwich due to a hamstring strain. With no FA Cup fixture last weekend, the Swans were afforded a two-week break and Allen’s resultant rest has seen him step up his recovery ahead of the Britannia showdown.

Brendan Rodgers was handed more good news on the injury front, as Alan Tate revealed he hopes to be ready for a first-team return before the end of the month. The defender played in the opening game of the season before breaking his leg in a bizarre golf buggy accident but is edging closer to a comeback, with a series of reserves appearances now under his belt.

Reports suggest Chris Samba could return to Blackburn’s first-team this weekend. The Mail indicate that the Rovers skipper has settled his differences with Steve Kean and has returned to training with the first-team ahead of his side’s trip to Man City on Saturday.

Titus Bramble is expected to be sidelined for at least another month for Sunderland. The centre-half has been unavailable since Boxing Day due to an Achilles problem, though it’s fair to say Martin O’Neill’s side have hardly missed him, conceding just 4 goals in seven games in Bramble’s absence. With Wes Brown also injured, Michael Turner has begun to establish a partnership with John O’Shea in the heart of defence and, at 4.2, is starting to look like a decent cut-price option, though Matt Kilgallon is approaching full fitness and may threaten Turner’s first-team starts.

David Vaughan could be in line for a return for Sunderland this weekend. The midfielder was a crucial part of Martin O’Neill’s first-team, starting the first eight games of the Irishman’s reign but has missed the last three due to an ankle problem- Vaughan has been called up by Wales for next week’s international friendly, suggesting his fitness may no longer be an issue.

    Evening all,

Looking for a big differential to my mini league rivals as I've fallen behind and want to gamble to get back in the frame. Anyone think RVP to Rooney is a good move?

RVP's fixtures aren't great and Arsenal are struggling whereas Rooney's scoring atm. Everyone above me in ML has RVP and no one Rooney but all will probs get him in GW28 so I want to get ahead of the game.

Also which is more accurate, Total FPL or FISO as one has Rooney at 96% and the other at 104%?
    Thanks

Already got - RVP Aguero Ba atm.

Was originally going to just do Aguero to Rooney in GW28 but really fancy Rooney to get a couple v Norwich. Also I'm about 60 points behind and they have a similar team and the smaller differentials aren't making up much ground.

Not convinced - wouldn't get rid of Silva now with the fixtures they have, he should have lots of space to work his magic. Also Chelsea are in free-fall and Mata often is a let down in FPL terms, especially away from home.

EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP B REVIEW - VERY LONG POST WARNING

Having taken inspiration from IT, Colehole and some of the other posters who have done group reviews I have put one together for Group B. I promise that it is completely unbiased and at no point have I insulted any of my Group B rivals or bigged myself up....

    Standard Liege (Duffman91 – Rank 90,173)

    Team Value: £108m
    Highest Overall Rank: 47,488 (GW21)
    Lowest Overall Rank: 1,430,120 (GW1)
    Highest Gameweek Rank: 42,748 (GW9)
    Lowest Gameweek Rank: 1,831,198 (GW25)
    Highest Score: 85 (GW3 & 24)
    Lowest Score: 34 (GW19)

FPL Cup Performance: GW19 was a frustrating one for many a manager and Duffman was knocked out by another low scoring team. Like this writer, he would have gotten though had Vermaelen lasted another 7 minutes against QPR.

Duffman by name, duff manager by nature. At least, that’s what his Group B rivals will be hoping as the group’s second highest ranked manager goes for Europa glory. Having witnessed his beloved Spurs get eliminated in the group stage of this competition he will be hoping to go further in this equally prestigious fantasy version. This manager is in his 4th FPL season and has improved his rank every year and looks on course for his first top 100k finish. Duffman had been scoring consistently most gameweeks until recently where results have been somewhat topsy-turvy. A strikeforce of RVP, Aguero and Ba looks like propelling this manager up the overall rankings but with his Group B rivals having identical or similar attacks picking the right captain appears vital.

Differentials: Ryan Taylor looks to be the key differential here with Nathan Dyer another if he makes it off the bench. With Valencia and Huth in the team, at least one transfer is expected this week.

Best Transfer: Nothing stands out more than the DGW signing of BAE.

Worst Transfer: Spunking £4.5m on Christophe Berra was an unusual move on the GW4 wildcard. To be fair, Wolves did start the season well and had kept 2/3 clean sheets. Unfortunately, Berra has not managed to score more than 2 points since then and 0-1 pointers (despite playing 90 minutes every game until recently) have been more common. The Scot was deservedly kicked out in the January wildcard. In terms of immediate failure, the GW22 wildcard signing of Huth stands out.

Crowning Glory: While not really his finest moment, it is surprising to see a manager actually get more than 1 point out of everyone’s favourite Everton player. Transferring him in GW16 was just in time to see 2 assists in 2 games. In truth, it could be argued that the GW21 sale of this party animal was a finer moment.

Hour of Despair: GW2 proved to be a source of frustration with SuperVorm, De Laet and Simpson registering a total of 28 points on the bench. Bosingwa aside, Duffman’s GK and other 2 defenders on the pitch picked up a mediocre 4 points to rub salt into the wounds.

    Hannover (Sarnab-Wazzagoal – Rank 173,691)

    Team Value: £108.3m
    Highest Overall Rank: 134,564 (GW24)
    Lowest Overall Rank: 1,636,461 (GW6)
    Highest Gameweek Rank: 8,595 (GW23)
    Lowest Gameweek Rank: 2,351,667 (GW8)
    Highest Score: 89 (GW23)
    Lowest Score: 21 (GW8)

FPL Cup Performance: The longest cup run in Group B ended in GW24. A high scoring week for many, Sarnab was swept aside despite having RVP(c) and a score of 81. He will now doubt have been aggrieved to lose to a team whose score of 98 included 2 points from Mark’s favourite player.

This is Sarnab’s 2nd season and he just missed out on a top 100k rank at his first attempt. This season was something of a disaster to begin with and it was not until GW15 that he first entered the top million managers. The GW11 signing of RVP for Rooney seems to have been the catalyst for the turnaround, with a number of successful signings such as Ba, Bale, Nani and BAE coming in the following 2 months. Until the debacle that was GW25, he had recorded 8 green arrows in a row and goes into Group B as the manager in form though the January wildcard may have ruined that.. This manager owns four of ‘The Power Five’ and will no doubt be pleased that the missing one is the injured Valencia. A Man Utd fan, he will be hoping for both real and fantasy Europa League success.

Differentials: Siggy stands out as the differential in this team. Cisse is another differential but a useless one since he’s suspended for another 2 fixtures. With one transfer made already this week it seems likely that Cisse has been given the boot. I suspect Demba Ba has been brought in to complete the holy trinity up front with RVP and Kun, a strikeforce that is popular in this group.

Best Transfer: With an FPL team name of Captain America no prizes are on offer for guessing who he signed and captained just in time for THAT game against Newcastle. That he used his second FT to bring Sess in made it a great week for this manager.

Worst Transfer: The January wildcard used in GW24 has so far been something of a disaster. It is impossible to pick one out so the highlights of his failed wildcard transfers are:

Mata to Silva (7 points lost)
Shawcross to Evans (11 points lost)
BAE to Santon (17 points lost)
DIE ADEBAYOR DIE to Gerbil Cisse (25 points lost)

Crowning Glory: Sarnab’s finest moment was clearly his GW22 transfers. As this has already been detailed a look through his history shows that his highest gameweek rank in GW23 came thanks to 33 points from his GK and 3 defenders. Tim Krul’s penalty save and unlikely clean sheet away to Blackburn was the big points scorer in this defence. Many others opted to play Vorm over Krul that week only to see the agony of his clean sheet being taken thanks to a stoppage time own goal against 10 men. This manager was left smugly looking at Vorm on the bench.

Hour of Despair: A GW8 rank of 2,351,667 was always going to be a prime candidate for this dubious honour. That week, his pitch was swamped with 1 and 2 pointers with a respectable 6 points from Shawcross being the only greater score. Agonisingly, Sarnab’s captain and vice captain saw a combined total of 0 minutes of football leaving him with an abysmal score of 21 points.

FC Kobenhavn (Milanista – Rank 12,405)

    Team Value: £111.4m
    Highest Overall Rank: 2,549 (GW18)
    Lowest Overall Rank: 1,165,387 (GW1)
    Highest Gameweek Rank: 7,120 (GW6)
    Lowest Gameweek Rank: 1,912,874 (GW25)
    Highest Score: 89 (GW24)
    Lowest Score: 34 (GW25)

FPL Cup Performance: Eliminated in GW19 to a team of 8 players courtesy of a Jordan Henderson assist

The 4th seed and, ahem, overwhelming favourite for the whole tournament is aiming for top spot in Group B. Something of a rookie with just one FPL season prior to this. That season ended with a disappointing 90k finish following a late season collapse. Learning from 1st season mistakes and discovering the vast resources of FFS in preseason has led to a marked improvement. A dire start to the season which saw a rank outside the top 1m at the end of GW4 turned into glory as the team skyrocketed up into the top 10k by GW13 as the early season wildcard paid off. With a team value of £111.4m and resale value of £107.3m I will be hoping the ‘Super Seven’ of Mata, Dempsey, Silva, Bale, Aguero, RVP and Ba produce devastating returns. This Milan supporter is gunning for fantasy Europa League success while his actual team go for Champions League glory for the 8th time. However, 5 red arrows in the last 7 show a team that is out of form and at risk of an early exit. A turnaround in form similar to that which saw a 4-0 drubbing of Arsenal 7 days ago is needed.

Differentials: Other than the Matador hopes are high for attacking points from Milan flop Taiwo. With two homes fixtures to come Ryan Shotton could prove to be somewhat more useful than the 1 pointers delivered so far though this may be overly optimistic, especially with the red card for fellow long throw in connoisseur Rory Delap being rescinded on appeal. In this group Enrique is another differential in defence.

Best Transfer: Selling Nani for Dempsey just in time for Fulham’s game against Newcastle game provided immediate rewards in an otherwise poor gameweek. Whereas Nani was busy picking up an injury and 2 points for his efforts the Texan has subsequently seen scores of 9, 2 and 5 with his lone 2 pointer spent on the bench as fantasy sensation James McClean took his place in the team to double digit satisfaction.

Worst Transfer: 3 weeks and 5 points from Sturridge saw me kick him out in frustration in exchange for a ticket on the Bendy Bus. I watched in disgust as Sturridge then went 6 games in row scoring or assisting. Thankfully, the damage was minimised by me departing the Bendy Bus two stops early and hitching a ride on a sheep. I was another manager to see the Janaury wildcard turn red with a certain fat Blackburn striker lasting just 22 minutes before being sent for an early feeding.

Crowning Glory: With no particular standout moment owning RVP from the start of his run takes this spot.

Hour of Despair: Right in the middle of my ascension up the rankings things were looking good going into the final game of GW9 with 60 points from 8 players and a good fixture to come. Things did not look so good after Bosingwa saw red and Sturridge was substituted as a consequence. Just before halftime the TV was switched off as I witnessed Mata being taken off with an injury. Those 3 players contributed an enormous 1 point to my score. To make matters worse, this combined score of 1 was only thanks to the armband being placed around Sturridge at the last minute due to talk of RVP being benched. That talk proved true but did not stop him scoring twice. I was left to berate my misfortune having seemingly made the correct decision by not handing the armband to a player who started on the bench and to berate my stupidity for handing the armband to Daniel f****** Sturridge instead of my other brace scoring Dutchman.

    Vorskla (transferaddict – Rank 527,039)

    Team Value: £106.6m
    Highest Overall Rank: 86,818 (GW1)
    Lowest Overall Rank: 1,290,098 (GW6)
    Highest Gameweek Rank: 30,105 (GW20)
    Lowest Gameweek Rank: 2,176,742 (GW5)
    Highest Score: 93 (GW20)
Lowest Score (excluding hits): 25 (GW5)

FPL Cup Performance: A reasonable run to GW23 before being eliminated by a manager currently ranked in the top 2k.

Preposterous, outrageous, ridiculous, absurd, daft, outlandish, irrational, these are all words that can be used to describe this manager’s dealings in the transfer market. When it comes to buying players, transferaddict spends points in a manner that makes Roman Abramovich look shrewd. Disappointingly for his Group B rivals, transferaddict has not lived up to his name recently with no point hits since GW18. Earlier in the season was a different story as he racked up an astonishing 116 points in transfer hits. Like Fat Frank in a cake shop, it seems this manager simply could not help himself as he gorged on transfer after transfer. A Man Utd fan, it’s possible that points chasing explains the transfer policy of this glory hunter. Since this madness stopped he has seen a steady rise up the rankings. However, like a relapsing alcoholic, he could not help himself when the January wildcard came into play and went truly wild, making an utterly ludicrous TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY FOUR TRANSFERS!!! This manager has no previous season history. His recent form has been reasonable and transferaddict could be a dark horse in the group.

Differentials: Edin Dzeko and Riise both stand out as differentials though with an injured Ecuadorian and a maverick transfer policy there is no telling what could happen.

Best Transfer: Do you honestly expect me to look through all of them? A scroll along transferaddict’s very long transfer history reveals that he brought BAE in for the DGW which helped towards his biggest score of the season.

Worst Transfer: With 50 transfers made (excluding wildcards) there are bound to be some shockers. Rather than singling out any specific transfer I will instead applaud his audacious 24 point hit in GW16 and even barmier 36 point hit in GW10.

Crowning Glory: On the first day of the season this manager broke the first rule of fantasy football and captained a defender. However, that defender was Gary Cahill who picked up a clean sheet along with a stunning goal to get transferaddict off to a flyer.

Hour of Despair: A gameweek 5 score of 25 (before deducting a 4 point hit). Considering this hit was to bring in Ward and Jarvis who got 3 points while the sold Anderson and Smalling got 11 points as the Utd defender helped himself to a goal. 0 points for Enrique and -2 for Charlie Adam compounded a miserable week with Tiote sitting on the bench mocking his manager with 7 points. GW9 could also be considered his hour of despair as a score of 29 led to that infamous 36 point hit the week after.

Two free transfers this week. Unfortunately I can't afford Evans to get some United cover in unless I
    1) Trade Ruddy to Bogdan (starting Vorm every week anyway) and then trade Evans in for Taiwo
    2) Trady Senderos to Kelly and trade Evans in for Taiwo again.

Which one do you reckon chaps (or any alternative suggestions)?

Taiwo's fun but not sure about him long term!

I've got my finger on the trigger to switch RVP to Rooney, I think you should keep silva for his next two fixtures. I'll only lose 0.1 on RVP though so it's probably an easier decision for me.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get him in my team too.

Only reasonable transfer I can think of is Raylor > Williamson, and Aguero > Rooney. Unfortunately I don't have two transfers banked, so I'm probably going to have to take a hit to avoid price rises.. and that scares me with Rooney. Not to mention I'm losing a cheap offensive defender I've had since 4.0

Everytime I take off the rose-tinted glasses with regards van persie it seems more and more like he has to go.

    1) In his last 10 gws his only big scoring weeks have come against Blackburn(H) QPR(H) and Aston Villa(A) none of whom are notable for their clean sheets. Those matches have included Swansea, Bolton, Wolves and Sunderland.

    2) Next few fixtures are TOT liv NEW -blank- each of whom are particularily solid at the back, especially -blank-

    3) Fair enough he has a 6.375 points per game average for the last 8 GWs but that's skewed by one massive 23 point haul, it's only 4ppg without that, alot of 2-pointers in there.

    4) Wenger and the Arsenal system are crumbling.

    5) Alternatives look very tasty ...Rooney, Aguero who have immeasurably superior fixtures

    6) Everyone has RVP so he'd be an anti-differential

Join the bandwagon, watch as he delivers 2-pointers and a blank over the next 4 weeks and feel smug

Okay what has Rooney & Aguero done in the past 8 GWs to justify this transfer?

If RVP's points are skewed by the BLA game, so are Rooney's by 3 penalties in the last 3-4 games.
