Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis- Russia

We continue with our coverage of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine by bringing the analysis of Group A to its conclusion. Having already run the rule over Czech Republic, Greece and Poland, we turn our attentions to Russia:

Dick Advocaat’s side start their campaign against the Czech Republic in the opening day’s later kick-off, at 7.45pm on Friday June 8. Next up is a clash against Poland four days later on Tuesday June 12 – once again this is an evening match – before Russia then square up to Euro 2004 winners Greece on Saturday June 16, at 7.45pm.

With no real stand-out side amongst the quartet, Fantasy managers will be hedging their bets over who to plump for. Greece cruised to the top of their qualifying group ahead of Croatia while remaining unbeaten over ten games, the Czech Republic qualified after defeating Montenegro 3-0 in a play-off, while Poland have tasted defeat just once in nine friendlies since last August, with draws against the likes of Germany and Portugal.

The Road to Qualification

Russia edged their group with Republic of Ireland by just two points, after winning seven and losing one of their ten matches – a 1-0 home defeat to Slovakia. Advocaat’s men were defensively strong, racking up seven clean sheets and conceding just one goal in their last seven matches. While a total of 17 goals suggests they were strong going forward, six of those came in the final match of the qualifying campaign at home to Andorra – Russia failed to score more than one goal on six of those occasions.

Most Appearances: Berezutsky & Arshavin (10), Ignashevich & Zyryanov (9), Anyukov, Zhirkov, Dzagoev & Shirokov (8)

Top Scorers: Dzagoev & Pavlyuchenko (4), Kerzhakov & Pogrebnyak (2)

Top Assists Anyukov (3)

The Likely Lads

With Russia’s defensive resilience likely to pick up plenty Fantasy interest, Yuri Zhirkov is an option who also offers plenty going forward. Nailed-on at left-back, the former Chelsea man doesn’t come cheap at 6.0, but a look at his domestic stats with new club Anzi highlights his current form, with a goal and eight assists returned in 23 league games in 2011/12. Zhirkov will appeal to those with budget to spare, while 6.5 priced centre-half Sergei Ignashevich takes his fair share of free-kicks and is a real differential in comparison, with 1.9% owners compared to Zhirkov’s 21%.

Ruled out of CSKA Moscow’s season at the end of March with a broken toe, Alan Dzagoev has revealed he has returned to full training over the past couple of days, though is not yet 100%. With almost three weeks until their opening match, the 7.5 priced midfielder certainly has time on his side. Joint-top scorer in qualifying with four goals, in addition to providing two assists, the highly-rated 22 year old will play right of the Russia front three, making him an enticing out-of-position prospect for Fantasy managers. Despite the fact his season finished early, Dzagoev still managed six goals and 15 assists in 40 appearances for CSKA last term – a clear indication of his creative talents.

Andrei Arshavin seems to have recaptured some of his old sparkle since a loan move away from Arsenal in the winter transfer window. Producing a vital contribution in Zenit’s capture of the Russian domestic title, Arshavin looks to be approaching the tournament in good form, having notched in a friendly win over Denmark in late February. Coming in at 9.0, he’s the priciest option in Advocaat’s squad but offers corner kicks in addition to a share of free-kicks. The Russian skipper is a guaranteed starter under the Dutchman but, unlike Dzagoev, is classified as a forward, which may deter investment – at present, he has a mere 1.5% ownership. With a move away from the Emirates looking likely this summer, he has the perfect shop window to impress would-be suitors.

Many media outlets seem to favour Aleksandr Kerzhakov as the man most likely for the lone striker rule. He started the most recent friendly against Denmark and, with three more friendlies to follow – against Uruguay, Lithuania and Italy – we should be hopefully much the wiser prior to the opening match against the Czech Republic. Priced at 8.0, Kerzhakov is 0.5 more expensive than rivals Pavel Pogrebnyak and Roman Pavlyuchenko, and would clearly be too much of a risk if the possibility of rotation is on the cards. His qualifying program was blighted by injury, with just five appearances over the 10 games but Kerzhakov arrives on the back of an outstanding season, having returned 23 goals and 12 assists in the Russian top-flight for Zenit; a clear indication of his eye for goal, if given the opportunity.

Cheeky Punt

Igor Akinfeev may have missed four of Russia’s games after sustaining a cruciate ligament injury last year but the CSKA skipper returned to action in April and is Advocaat’s automatic first-choice man between the sticks. Priced at 5.5, he is far from cheap for a keeper and may not appeal to those shopping around for cut-price rotation options but everything is relative here – Akinfeev is the least costly guaranteed starter in Russia’s rearguard and is already seeing plenty of interest, with over 14% of Fantasy managers picking him up.

Priced at just 6.0, Roman Shirokov looks strong value in the midfield area. Playing as the furthest forward of the three, he’s already announced himself to Fantasy managers over the last few months, scoring five times for Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League. Although he grabbed just one goal in qualifying, Shirokov has netted in the last two matches, with goals in friendlies against Greece and Denmark, and offers a definite cheaper alternative route for Fantasy managers scouring the market for possible bargains.

        Standard.

I'm starting to think that base attack of Robben, Lewandowski and Ibrahimovic is overrated. The problem isn't necessarily the picks, but the fact there aren't any alternatives anywhere. If Gomez hits a brace in the first match, people will want him, and you have nowhere to go if you have that team. No options.

I also think heavier defense is more rewarding in this game, so double up on a shutout team like Greece and you could be in the money.

I think Robben and Lewandowski are decent picks, I've gone for Benzema with those two as I fancy France to do well. I'm not convinced by Ibrahimivoc, he often disapoints when playing for Sweden.

That's just it. It is not the same for everyone. It is quite random that suddenly an important place in CL (frankly what every club is playing for these days) earned throughout the full course of a season can be taken away because a team from their own country, wins the Champions League.

We are a strong, healthy economical side, and we can take it, but imagine it happening to a smaller club that maybe just reach a CL spot once in every 20 years. I.e. a mid-table French or Portuguese team. Or Everton?

After all matches on a single day have finished and before the next matches start, you can:

      1. Replace any player who wasn't sent off, with one from your bench whose team is yet to play.
Change your captain if he wasn't sent off, with a player from your squad whose team is yet to play.
      2. Players who are substituted out will score 0 points, the captain bonus will be lost from your original captain if a new captain is selected. Substitutions and captain changes can't be cancelled once confirmed.

An unlimited number of manager substitutions can be made, however, it is not possible to make manager substitutions after games on the last day of the Matchday, as all fixtures will have been completed.

If a manager substitution or captain change is made then no automatic substitutions will take place on your team that Matchday.

Oh, so pretty much what that means is that if someone flops or doesn't start, you can use your bench to sub them off and hopefully get some points...?
Therefore the intentions are to have a bench with players that will play every game and are fairly cheap..?

I watched it last night imagining we had finished fourth, I would be so angry and hurt if Chelsea had taken it off of us. Must be horrible.

To be honest, I think 4th should have more of a right to it than the winners, as the purpose of the competition is that teams work towards that all season and that is the pinnacle of club competition. If you can not finish in the top 4, then you shouldn't be in it the following year, whether you win it or not.

Champions should always be given automatic entry to the tournament next time to defend their trophy.

That said I think Spurs deserved it more than Chelsea, but what can you do. They won it fair and square and thems the rules I'm afraid.

I am gutted for Spurs fans though as I wanted you to get the last CL place.

    Subs - Corluka, Olsen, Papadopoulos
(thinking if Pilar dosnt start then can do in-week swap for Corluka)

Bayern were wasteful in the extreme. Chelsea were extremely lucky but any team that wins a cup has to have a large slice of luck along the way to do so. Got to tip your hat to them and grouse quietly to yourself that its them that won it.

This is the approach england should adopt in the euros against the better sides. As for lit up the competition, the messi penalty miss, the numerous cech saves, Ramires chip, Ashley cole and ivanovic last ditch tackles, drogba goals and the Torres goal at the nou camp was great entertainment IMO . I really enjoy seeing the strong favourites lose games in knockout format. It was almost a fairy tale story win for the old guard and Di Matteo. To do it at the Allianz was the icing on the cake.

Too many people ranting about how it's 'unfair' that Chelsea are in the Chaampion's League over Spurs.

Now I wanted to see Spurs in the Champion's League as much as the next man, but it's hardly unfair that Chelsea are given the spot. For 1 the rules were there for everyone to see well before the season started. It is also called the Champion's League, and Chelsea are the Champions of that very competition. Teams in the Premier League should count themselves lucky that there are even so many spots available for English teams let alone allowing the 4th place team to enter. Chelsea also pretty much gave up fighting for that 4th spot so that they couuld give theirselves a better chance of winning the Champion's League.

In summary, people need to fix up and stop moaning.

No they don't. They replace us practically.

Technically the Champions get a place in the group stages, and the nation from which the Champion comes from loses their "final" CL berth - which was Spurs'.

None of them. All 4 go to group stages directly.

haha I honestly felt a bit bad when I was typing that, because I wanted to see Spurs in the Champ's League over Chelsea, but I do believe what I wrote.

On the plus side, no rotation for Harry again, not that it was in doubt anyway.

Anyone on here feel Robben got what he deserved , let's be honest for all his undoubted talent and his cheesey hawks version of "I am the one and only" there's something about the guy I just don't like, that said last night was drogbas finest moment setting aside his 'diving' antics in general I was pleased for him, heroes and villians - who'd be one !

    Nice articles.

I wonder if any mods could update the links on the previous team articles on the "More Group A Analysis" to include all of the teams?
