Euro 2012

Euro 2012 – McDonald’s Update the Assist Rule

It’s come to our attention that since we published our previous guide to the McDonald’s game, there has been an important tweak to the assist rule that is beneficial to Fantasy managers.

Beforehand, the game had simply replicated the rule of the Champions League format, also run by Uefa. Assists were not awarded for shots that rebounded off the woodwork or opposition goalkeeper, neither were they granted if the goalscorer had to beat an opponent before scoring, as stated below:

An assist is awarded when the goalscorer receives the ball directly from a team-mate (including the goalkeeper) and scores without having to take the ball past an opponent. If the assist pass takes a small deflection which does not change the direction of the ball, it will still be given. No assists are awarded for own goals or penalties. Live assists are provisional and will be reviewed within 24 hours of the match.

Now, however, they’ve made it a little more straightforward for us. Ahead of Friday’s kick-off, the addition of a few handy alterations should consequently lead to higher scoring rounds across the board.

It’s refreshing to see that rebounds will now count – this seemed an obvious flaw and brings the rule system more in line with most Fantasy games. A player now also receives assist points if he makes the final pass prior to the ball finishing in the back of the net, regardless of whether the scorer needed to beat an opponent – again this is a positive step.

Although players will not be awarded assist points for converted penalties or free-kicks, if a player is brought down in the box and his side are subsequently awarded a spot-kick, he will still receive an extra point, regardless of whether the ball finishes in the back of the net or not.

A player will be credited with a “goal assist” when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.).
An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.
When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker.
Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored.
No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick.
No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

Hopefully this will be the one and only rule change to the game prior and during the tournament. However, those long in the tooth may remember that this wasn’t quite the case during the FIFA World Cup. We’ll stay on the look out for any further subtle changes and alert you should any arise.

    Quick question:

    A) Shirokov + Srna

    OR

    B) Dzagoev + Mandzukic?

Only have an hour left to sort out my team because I won't be able to tinker again until Saturday at the earliest. Bloody stag do!!

Don't see why he's any better. Higher ownership, and he has fewer goals and fewer assists than Xavi this season too.

It's all on the fact he's supposedly playing further forward, but that's not really the case since all their playmakers crowd the area outside the penalty box anyway.

            Fair enough.

Just think there's a bit of a bias towards Iniesta because of his world cup final goal.

Thanks for the input on the first option though. I was more concerned with that than the identity of the Spanish mid.

As I have gone Afellay and Alonso I would have to say the first one, although Afellay is a bit of a risk. I decided to pass on Yarmolenko, picking all players that I think will win or at least not lose.

He said the below, according to the BBC's live Euro ticker at 15:15...

          EURO 2012
Croatia coach Slaven Bilic says Nikica Jelavic will spearhead his attack, particularly considering his successful spell with Everton in the second half of the Premier League season.

"[His impact has been] so strong and so sudden that he was quite unbelievable," says Bilic.

So it sounds like Yarmolenko’s got a poorly tummy, had we better get rid? Or hope he’ll be fine by next week? Thinking of changing A to B:

    A) Debuchy, Yarm, Jelavic
    B) Gebre Selassie, Elm, Muller

Question on substitutions in Mickey D's FF:

If you have a player who scores well in the first round of games, you keep him in for the second round, but then want to sub him out for the third round, will he loose all his points? Or just those from the second round?

FFS Friendly World Cup Group Previews

    Group B

Brazil - The Glory Hunters (Forca Inter and Epic Fail)

Now this a big hitting team. 2 very well known and highly popular members have paired up to form a positively awesome team. 2 high ranking FPL players make a formidable proposition. But this is by far the toughest group of the lot, made up of 4 very tough teams. Could Forca Inter's knowledge of Croatia provide that extra differential that may push them over the line. Has he hidden away a gem? Epic offers his own brand of enthusiasm and many may be hoping for a repeat of his now legendary press conference. Will this team strike up a Samba Beat, or will Epic Fail's name prove to be an apt one?

    Prediction - 2nd.

Mexico - The Abominable Stalkers (Sleep Talk and Snowy 84)

Another very good pairing. This pair will be very tough to beat and will head in to the competition high on confidence. They are frequent visitors to the FFS boards and always have plenty to offer other posters. But, are they too, holding something back, trying to keep that little differential that could make the difference. I forsee a strong showing from this pair that could see the waving down at the rest from atop the group

    Prediction - 1st

Ghana - Long Cox up the Duff (Eoin and Porkie)

The quality in this group just does not let up. Now famous for his Euro 2012 team previews, many may say Eoin deserves a place in the knockouts for that alone. If only things were that simple. As great a pair as this is, it may be just too much for them to get out of a group as tough as this one. That being said I expect a strong showing and their opponents will have to perform well to overcome them. But alas it may be just too much for them in this one

    Prediction - 4th

South Korea - BonsEvs petit (Evs and BonZ)

Yet another tremendous pair to complete the Group B line-up. Taking their inspiration from Gene Hunt, this pair will want to barrel through their opponents. But like Eoin and Porkie this group may simply prove to be too much. I expect a forceful showing and they will certainly not be overwhelmed but with the strength of this group Heart and Seoul may not be enough. It will be an early exit, albeit one with heads held high for this pair.

    Prediction - 3rd.

That's missing the point. If the Danes score, having a GK in Grp C or D means you could switch mid-GW and hope for better.

Your way is a waste of a GK.

Isaksson (SWE) is guaranteed, so is Given (IRE) pretty much, in Grp's D and C respectively. THen there's other options in Grp A.

Sorry, both £4.5m, but Greeks are an option. Otherwise, save £0.5m elsewhere, you'll regret not having a second GK option.

Okay my little cousin wanted help picking his team and he wanted a player from each country in his squad of 15, Ukraine missing out on a coin toss. Best we could come up with was..

    Cech/Lindegaard
    St.Ledger/K.Papa/Coentrao/Strinic/Chiellini
    Goetze/Young/Afellay/Kuba/Shirokov
    Silva/Benzema/Ibrahimovic

He's only in it for fun but he's come up with a decent enough team, any changes?

agree with that, how about Gotze + Chiellini for Ozil + Balzaretti / cheaper Italian defender? or perhaps try Goetze + Ibra for Larsson/Elm + Muller? Just thinking off the top of my head to try and get around Goetze, haven't checked if those would work financially but should be more or less right 🙂

I like his rules though! I might try and get a second team going and follow these rules just for the fun of it... 😉

Controversy, or are UKR getting excuses in early?

    EURO 2012
Ukraine's manager says an act of "sabotage" might have caused the outbreak of food poisoning affecting 10 members of his Euro 2012 squad.

The players suffered the illness prior to the friendly against Turkey in Germany, which they lost 2-0.

"It happened in Germany, but it is impossible to establish the causes - all ate different food," Oleg Blokhin told Ukraine television.

"It may have been sabotage, I do not know. It cannot be accidental."

If you look at how many transfers you get in the later rounds then wildcarding after the first GW wont seem like such a waste.

Akinfeev does cost more, but that is irrelevant.
