Group C moves into view with an “on paper” classic kicking things off, as Spain take on Italy in the five o’clock game. That’s followed by the Republic of Ireland’s opening clash against Croatia later this evening.

Our Dugout Discussion chatroom is now open to collect any real-time musings: this thread will do the rest.

The lineups for the opening match are in and there’s some rather surprising news…

Spain: Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Alba, Busquets, Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, Fabregas.

Italy: Buffon, Bonucci, De Rossi, Chiellini, Maggio, Motta, Giaccherini, Pirlo, Marchisio, Cassano, Balotelli.

Cesc Fabregas starts for the defending champions, as Vicente Del Bosque names a side with no recognised striker – an intriguing prospect, with the former Arsenal man likely to play as a “false nine”.

For Italy, Cesare Prandelli has altered his formation and rolled out a 3-5-2, perhaps in light of last week’s friendly defeat at the hands of Russia. Daniel De Rossi starts at the back, while Emanuele Giaccerini and Christian Maggio are given roles as wing-backs. Up front for the Azzurri, Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli lead the line.

  1. Anyone on wc planning on not having Mandy. He looked good today, but Irealand were poor. Can we see Spain and Italy being as generous?

    1. I have left him out of mine. May reconsider, but probs gonna keep Shirokov in there instead...

    2. might as well at 6.0 and OOP

I have but may well ship him....

    4. No. Prefer Shirokov.

    5. I don't have him and don't want him against Spain and Italy, even if I'd had him I'd sell him.

    6. He looked like Croatia's main goal threat, I think Croatia will score again in the next two games. He also got 5Rb's.

      I'm on the fence.

    7. Still resisting the knee jerk.

  2. NO RB points for Strinic ? Does it not count for throw-ins ???

  3. Great night in fantasy. Awful night in reality.

  4. NEW POST

  5. Just as a matter of interest, if you only use 6 of the 8 free transfers for the semis can you use the unused 2 + the other 4 in the final ?

    1. Then it should have been 12 for SF+Final in the transfer section. But it is 8+4.

      I am not sure.

    2. No, i dont think so.

  6. 32+3+5

Points in 3 days so far :|

  7. best Russian output for rest of groups?

    zhirkov + dragoev

    or shirkov + dragoev

    1. Im doing Shirokov + Dzagoev. Dzagoev looks brilliant and Shirokov is the best 6.0 option I can see in midfield (dont see Mandzukic repeating what he did today against Italy and Spain). Wish I had another space for Malafeev or something but since CS have been terrible to guess anyway I might as well bank on my offence.

  8. Let me ask this question again, bit of a punt:

    A) Piszczek + Nelson Oliveira
    B) Perquis + Jelavic

    1. Or any other defender for 4.5?

  9. What team Is better GW1 GW2
    A B
    Chesney Buffon
Alba Strinić Zhirkov Maniatis A.Cole Lescott
Iniesta Yarmolenko Shirokov Sneijder Iniesta Ribéry Shirokov Dzagoev (C)
RVP Ibra Lewy Benzema C.Ronaldo Torres
Subs: Given Gibson M.Olsson A.Cole Subs: Anderson Strinić M.Olsson Polanski
    I think B Cheers

  10. How essential is Dutch and German cover over the next 2 games do we think? My wildcard currently doesn't posses any from either team

    1. Just avoiding the Dutch. Going for Boateng only for Germany ATM

    2. I want to plan one or the other but have one of each at the mo.

  11. Do throw-ins not count for recovered balls??

  12. M.olsson and evra subbed in for ==> maniatis (2 pts) and strinic (2 pts) ??

    1. M Olsson will most likely play, but it's not 100% sure yet... We might know tomorrow. I'd sub in Evra now, and hope to get confirmation about Olsson tomorrow before deadline.

  13. Hoping for big scores from Ibra, Ribery and Debuchy. Got 40 on day 1, on 43 now :D

  14. 51 points with Zlatan and Nasri to come. Nasri differential here we go :)

    1. Congrats!

4vets says this is the last time he will ever help his son in fantasy games. Yes, I am 2nd with 3 2pters to take out. He has 3 0pters to get rid of. Ouch.

  15. How is this wildcard team looking to you guys any improvements?

    Chalkias/Anderson
    Debuchy/Alba/Bonucci/Lescott/Hubnik
    Shirokov/Dzagoev/Iniesta/Polanski/Young
    Cassano/Benzema/Ronaldo

  16. except cassano, looks good

  17. Has Mandzukic officially been given his second goal? I mean, if Jelavic had dived across the line and it came of his head a la Given he'd be given it. wouldn't he?

This isn't one of those sour grapes post btw 'cause I've got Mandzukic in my team (captained Jelly though).

    1. The rules don't stipulate that it should be his goal, though it ain't sour grapes from me either as I, too, have him. Wish I'd captained him, though...!! =o(

    2. The McDonalds / UEFA rules suggest that it should be an assist:

"An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal."

I had thought that the decision on this would also affect managers who have Given in goal, but for some crazy reason it seems that players don't lose points for scoring oggies....can anyone explain that?

    3. It looked as though it might go in without given's touch

  18. For GW 2:

    Option A: Benzema and Evra

    Option B: Ronaldo and Perquis

  19. Young/gerrard/ribery/nasri who to bring in?

“I love to attack and I love to go up front...It is a little more difficult than when you are playing centre-back. If you play the way that I want to play, I think my influence is better as a left-back. For the team, it is best that I play as a centre-back. I like to bring the ball out. You need to move the game quickly, and that is one of my qualities as well.”
