Scout Report – Olympic Involvement

Filed under: Scout Reports - Posted by: Paul

Euro 2012 may have been and gone but the small matter of the upcoming Olympics gives Fantasy managers plenty to ponder ahead of the Premier League kick off on August 18. Some of the top-flight’s biggest sides will be sweating over the fitness of some of their first-team assets and, with the final taking place only seven days before the domestic season kicks off, there could well be a knock-on effect when selecting our squads for the upcoming 2012/13 campaign:

The Dates
With so many venues playing host to the games, the group fixtures are crammed into three separate dates. The first set of matches take place on July 26, with a three day break before the next batch on July 29. Once again, we have three days to wait until the final lot of fixtures on August 1.

The quarter finals all play out on August 4 and semis are August 7 before the third-place play-off kicks off on 7.45pm on August 10. A day later sees the final take place at Wembley on Saturday August 11, just one day before Chelsea and Man City go head to head for the Community Shield and a week prior to the Premier League getting underway.

The Participants*

Arsenal – Aaron Ramsey, Chu-Young Park (S Korea)
Aston Villa – Benjamin Siegrist (Switzerland)
Chelsea – Ryan Bertrand, Daniel Sturridge, Juan Mata (Spain), Oriol Romeu (Spain)
Everton – Magaye Gueye (Senegal)
Fulham – Pajtim Kasami (Switzerland)
Liverpool – Craig Bellamy, Luis Suarez (Uruguay), Sebastian Coates (Uruguay)
Man City – Micah Richards
Man United – Tom Cleverley, Ryan Giggs, Rafael (Brazil), David De Gea (Spain)
QPR – Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand)
Southampton – Jack Cork
Sunderland – Ji Dong-Won (S Korea)
Swansea – Joe Allen, Neil Taylor, Scott Sinclair
Tottenham – Steven Caulker, Danny Rose, Sandro (Brazil)
West Brom – Craig Dawson
West Ham – James Tomkins, Mohamed Diame (Senegal)
Wigan – Maynor Figueroa (Honduras)

*GB unless stated

Looking at the participants, Swansea are the most effected in terms of first-team involvement. Scott Sinclair, Joe Allen and Neil Taylor were all regulars last time out under Brendan Rodgers and new boss Michael Laudrup will be sweating on their fitness ahead of the Swans first league game away to QPR on Saturday August 18. With Senegal, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay joining them in Group A, a top two finish and progress to the knockouts looks likely for Great Britain.

On the subject of Uruguay, Luis Suarez is one of the biggest names in the Premier League taking part. Compatriot and Liverpool team mate Sebastian Coates is also selected but his involvement is far less significant for Fantasy managers ahead of the Reds trip to West Brom on the opening day.

Chelsea and Man United both have four players apiece lining up for the Olympics. For the Blues, Juan Mata is the real worry for Fantasy managers – bearing in mind that Spain’s Group D opponents are Japan, Honduras and Morocco, progress seems inevitable. Roberto Di Matteo has already hinted he will give Mata time off from league duties until early September after his involvement with Spain in Euro 2012, suggesting he is likely to be left off our radars – all the more frustrating, bearing in mind Chelsea have a double Gameweek 1 and an outstanding opening schedule.

David De Gea’s involvement with Spain is likely to give Anders Lindegaard a chance to stake a first-team place in goal over United’s pre-season matches, while Rafael’s duties for Brazil may also prove disadvantageous to his chances of a starting role at right-back ahead of the opener at Everton.

Elsewhere, Micah Richards is the only Man City player on duty prior to the league opener at home to Southampton – Pablo Zabaleta is likely to take his place for the Community Shield match against Chelsea at the very least. The likes of Steven Caulker and Sandro will miss Spurs’ pre-season schedule under new boss Andre Villas-Boas, Sam Allardyce will be hoping first-choice centre-half James Tomkins and new signing Mohamed Diame come through unscathed, while Maynor Figueroa featured in every league game for Wigan last time round under Roberto Martinez.

In total, then, only four teams – Newcastle, Norwich, Reading and Stoke – are unaffected. It’s a huge relief for Alan Pardew in particular; Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba have both been omitted from the Senegal squad after the Magpies boss expressed concerns over their fitness. The duo are still expected to be part of their nation’s African Cup of Nations squad in January, though – something else for us to worry about in a few months time.

  1. Hmmm.

    Ars, Tot, Swa, Rdg, Che/Mcy

    or

    Mun, Mcy, Swa, Whm, Wba?

    1. Sorry Doosra, stepped out for a minute.

Yep few hours. I may go back and see if I can get another couple when I've packed the various bits of family off.

      What's this ^^^^?

    2. Close but the former

      1. Hmmm. I agree. Jaaskelainen goalie then.

        *sigh*

        1. £3.8 in Sky, I have him in both my teams atm, but wondering if I should spend another couple of mil for a top three keeper?

            1. I don't think your defence will be too bad and the £2mil would go a long way elsewhere.

    3. Are these for taking players from for the opening fixture/s?

        1. Ta, bit slow today, I would strike through today if I knew how.

        2. Would a Villa instead of your WBA do for the 9 GWs?

  2. First stab at a team name:
de Owen Lee Gea Lindy Vidic

    Hope it's not too long.

    1. 7 characters too long. 20 is the limit.

    2. deOwenLeeGeaLindyVidic ... 2 too long ... pity.

    3. I don't get the joke :(
      care to explain?

    4. ha- that's quite good. I find it impossible to think of team names like this. how do you do it?

  3. So the dream is officially over, Shorey signs for Reading and takes the number 3 shirt. Harte will be a squad player.

    http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10306~2837005,00.html

Might have saved us all from some Kolorov style shenanigans to be honest!

    1. Have to say that I saw this coming.

      That's one bandwagon down.

    2. blessing in disguise

    1. Have to just hope it's paper talk. Can't see Cabaye wanting to leave - he's been trying to convince Debuchy to sign for the last few months.

      1. True, but if there's one team in the world that anyone would consider moving to given the chance, it's probably Barca.

        1. Not sure where he'd fit in. He's a classy player but I wouldn't rate him above Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Busquets...

        2. To sit on the bench or the odd cup game? I suppose the weather's better.

          1. if that's your ambition then the MLS is for you.

    2. 8 million?? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

      1. yeah, he worth 3m. tops.

    3. I wouldn't be happy at all. Got my beady eye on him if he is going to be playing as attacking mid!! ;)

    4. Its in the Sun. End of.

  4. This time of the year I always have the shits. Where the hell will I get any playing 4-4.5 mill defenders? That are just a bit decent. Where?

    1. Sky Sports Fantasy Football. ;)

      1. I'm not eligible as a Saffer.

        Thank God.

        1. I remarked on your nice hat earlier, but hadn't noticed the very attractive earrings.

Splashing out at the shops I see Christina.

          1. Yes. Spoiling myself. Once FPL kicks off there won't be much time for anything else.

    2. All I know is my GW1 defence can't be as bad as last season.

      Al Habsi
      Figueroa - Givet - Elokobi - Simpson - A.N.Other Shitter that I can't remember

I've said it many-a-time, but I've no idea what I was thinking when I made my team last year. I'm sure I wasn't drunk.

      1. Well Al habsi and Simpson were "brilliant" calls in retrospect. I might dabble in the Wigan defence. Only to be dissapointed. Again.

        1. Aye, Wigan will fool us all yet again I presume.

Simpson was good, although he had quite a talent of picking up CS & baps when welded to my bench. Al Habsi didn't do anything of note until the last few months, long gone from my team.

I'm getting some heavy defenders this season. No doubt about it!

        2. Wigan hey, that's ballsie.... good luck for tomorrow btw!! ;)

          1. Thks DF

  5. Good morning!

    1. Morning both. Ready for the "When will FPL be up and running "? posts? :)

      1. Was just about to ask! :D

      2. and the "how much will (insert player here) cost" posts.

and the "Rate My Differentials" posts.

        FML.

        1. Classic. How you doin' Sport, haven't seen you around in a while.

          1. getting by mate.

just posting in the calm before the storm.

            1. "getting by"...shame. Must be bad knowing you are off on holiday to Italy. My thoughts are with you.

              1. that's next week.

until then, i have to put up with the likes of you and RONH.

            2. Sounds good. Hehe, the calm before the storm... I can feel it getting closer and closer

        2. Ahh! The joy of pre-season posts. :D

        3. Are you gonna give Dino a run out, once in a while? :-)

          1. i'm sure Dino will be back for an encore.

until then, i think my grav is appropraite for my current state of mind.

        4. Can't wait!

        5. Enjoy it. In a week there'll be a tsunami of (almost identical) RMT's sweeping over this place.

          1. by then, i will be somewhere in the sun missing the FPL opening and not being profile number #1

maybe i won't come back at all.

  6. So what's up with FPL's security certificate?

    LOL

      1. ;-) And a very good morning to you.

    1. Oh! And Best Wishes! Tomorrow? :-)

      1. Yeah

        1. You will be fine. And think of the attention! :-)

  7. anyone else thinking with de gea's involvement in the olympics that lindegaard could be a worthwhile early punt

any ideas on what we think his price may be?

    1. 5.5, Sadly - otherwise yes, me.

      1. that is a bit steep, 5m and i could be tempted

considering an early investment in utd's defence until we know how their attack will line up

        1. The thing is, their defense is just as, if not more unpredictable.

          1. really? id assume vidic is nailed on and also evra (or his replacement) will be

            1. Well there is Vidic, and then unknown really.
If Baines comes does that mean Evra goes? probably not, I'd say they will rotate the two.

              1. and with the attack you know there will be Rooney, who IMO is a must GW2,3 and 4
Then again I don't really see the point in trebling up in defenses personally.

        2. Not sure that I will be able to afford it - and Lindegaard may only do the opening match.

    2. I'm steering clear. I will need every available trade to no doubt fix my cheapo, newly promoted defenders that I will kick off with.

I can do without another headache.

      1. im thinking of a different route to begin with, trebling up on one of the big teams and then going for four 4m cheapies to plug the gap, for example

        de gea, 4m
        vidic, evra, 4m, 4m, 4m

        1. When you WC though? 3 ManU means no Rooney though. Not sure about that personally.

More importantly, what's your Chel cover for gw 1? Al capitino?

          1. unsure on it all yet, tempted with trebling on chelseas defence instead and captaining aguero

            all depends on prices

            1. I'm thinking Lamps + 2 def.

              1. Pity it seems Harte(Read) might now be a squad filler after Shorey signed. Shorey has no 3 shirt appar.

                Any Reading fans know more?

                1. i wouldnt touch him myself, always prefer to pick (cheap) defenders based on cleanie potential rather than goal threat

                  1. I remember jumping on the De laet bandwagon last season. Disaster. Might just avoid the cheap 4-4.5m def from the newbies and wait and see. Trying to keep WC back a bit this year.

            2. Im either doubling or trebling on the Chelsea defence, depends whether or not I want Hazard or Torres.

        2. Eve first up, then liv TOT new, GW5-7. Not ideal for a treble if you ask me.

I don't mind trebling up, but will only do it if there is a run of consecutive good fixtures. I wouldn't want to treble up on any of the teams with the best opening fixtures for various reasons (avl, eve, swa). Chelsea is the only one I would have considered, and the blank week + wanting to have some torres or hazard action means they are a no go.

    3. I don't see keepers (or anyone else really) being fatigued by the olympics.

      1. You may be making a mistake.

        1. ME!!?? Never. ;)

      2. nor me, but fergie seemed to like giving lindegaard a game or two before his injury

        1. In that case Tosey I'd swerve their keepers altogether. A good few teams with better early runs.

    4. Not worthwhile. De Gea will play GW2

  8. Rodallega apparently close to singing for Fulham.

    Puntalicious.

    1. The most wasteful striker in the Premiership, behind Suarez and Torres? ;-)

    2. BTW, who is doing Peno's at Fulham now that Klaxon is gone? Demsey?

      1. If he stays he should.

      2. Would be my guess, though Fulham apparently have this strange rule that if they get more that 1 peno in a match a different player takes each one.

        1. Yeah, the opposing goalkeepers won't like that. Fulham really know how to fool 'em.

    3. He is Wigans all time top goal scorer with ......... 24 goals.

  9. Stupid question but how does one change their avatar?

    1. FAQ off!

      1. Thanks for the help

    2. Head over to https://en.gravatar.com/ sign up, pick an image from your comp or on the net and wait.

      1. thanks alot

    3. Different cinema?

    4. FAQs on the front page here will take you through it Johndoersa.

      1. shot alot

        1. Nice one!

  10. Just taken another look at the fixtures.

Foster and Mingolet not looking like that great of a rotation for the first few weeks. Sadly a Sunderland QPR and Sunderland Villa rotation just doesn't work.

    1. Oh. I thought QPR-Sunderland wasn't too bad, especially after GW3. Maybe I need to look again

      1. QPR/SUN does work. My problem with it that QPR work well with so many treble rotations I'm looking at and I wouldn't want to double up on QPR by having that GK rotation running as well

      2. after GW3 QPR and Sunderland are always home or away on the same week,

Sunderlan WBA is a great rotation, it's just the fixtures.

        1. Hmmm, it's not disastrous but it's not actually as good as I first thought. Damn.

        2. True. I'm banking on West ham being the right cheap keeper to get and pairing with Southampton until the best pair show themselves

  11. Not really seen the kits this season.

Anyone that tops Evertons pink from last year?

    1. google Liverpools 3rd top. tribal design on the sleeves and horrible colour clashes.

      1. its not the purple and orange one its the dark purple one

        1. Wow. That is howlarious

      2. i actually like that 1..the purple isnt as bright as the 1 that was leaked few months back

    2. Swansea (home) have gone all Real Madrid.

Man City (away) have gone all Arsenal.

and [insert name of club I've forgotten] have gone all Barca.

      1. Stoke

      2. Stoke was the Barca one.

      3. I actually quite like Swanseas

    3. Quite a few of them here http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/picturegalleries/9284469/Premier-League-kits-201213-in-pictures.html?frame=2268396

United's looks like a tea towel, Citeh's looks cheap and nasty and the less said about Villa's luminous green the better.

      1. Jees I like the Stoke and Wigan ones

      2. Has Chelsea's home strip changed at all? Looks the same.

        1. Gold lining instead of white.

          1. Ah. Fair enough.

      3. that fulham one is pretty bad

    4. villas away lime green one

    5. Love Swansea's away

    6. Only reason i thought about these is because i wanted to picture what they would look like in our brand new FPL teams

  12. Very sad news to wake up to. No not Moyles quitting radio 1. Betting scandal revealed by former Saints captain Claus Lundekvam.

Expect this to rumble on for months like the Pakistan spot fixing

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/4422432/Premier-League-betting-scandal-Claus-Lundekvam-blows-lid-on-football-fraud.html

    1. It the bookmakers fault for offering these stupid bets in the first place.

I would question anyone who wouldn't do this for their advantage

    2. I thought the first throw in one was pretty common knowledge. I think there was one game where a player booted it straight out from the kick off. Don't think thats offered by the bookies any more is it?

  13. Everyone seen this class free kick? Goalkeeper howler. Gotta love them.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18794346

    1. Keeper was 6 yds off his line.

      1. And the rest! ;-)

Wouldn't be so bad but they lost by one goal.

    2. Did i see a canada flag there somewhere?

      1. Yer. Vancouver. Strange. It's a long way to come for a Europa League game between Portadown and a Macedonia club.

        :-)

  14. Oooooh a different error message :D

After reading through the comments it is certain that we are all addicts and itching for our fix. Reminds me of Trainspotting a little ;)

    1. Choose a life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family...

      ...Nah. Choose FPL. ;)

      1. Exactly!

Chose FPL. Choose Wildcards. Choose price rises. Choose a captain. Choose a sh*t bench. Choose Torres. Choose heartbreak. Choose phantom assists. Choose cleansheets. Choose red cards. Choose bonus points. Choose save points. Choose own goals. Choose autosubs. Choose 11.29 on a Saturday morning.

        :D

        1. Choose recovered balls?

          1. PLEASE!

            1. That'll have a whole new meaning to you tomorrow, eh? ;)

Good luck with it all boyo!

              1. Thks. I don't know if I'm more worried about the operation or about the price of Milner.

          2. Keep it to the CL. Dont want my FPL changing to benifit the Scott Parkers of the world :)

        2. Great stuff.

    2. Well you can go trainspotting at the weekend if you're good.

  15. Morning all and have a good day. ;-) Really looking forward to FPL season starting. Already addicted to daily morning fix of BBC transfer gossip and FFS pre-season speculations. I'd be all for DVD to Hamburg and Ade + Sturridge to Tottenham... 2012/13 could be a great season for Spurs.

    1. I hope so :)

    2. Just odd tweaking they need I think. The early run looks OK too.

  16. Darn. I thought I was in :) Just refreshed the FPL site and it gave me a registration page... so of course I filled in details and submitted but doesn't look like it worked.

    1. Did you check the date??????????

      1. No date but different form to last year. was definately a not quite ready version though as it was just one long form without sections.... All part of em getting close me thinks :)

  17. rumors that SAF trying to sign Lucas for 20m.
probably BS, but how Lucas is like in real life? (not fifa)

    1. 5 ft 8 in, quick and handsome ;-)

      1. don't think it is this lucas, but I would be happy if united get him :) quality player

        1. It's not 'Pool's Lucas but a guy named Lucas Moura who plays for Sao Paulo. The reported offer was 30m but it's likely just BS. We have no money so SAF will sign Jack Rodwell instead.

  18. FPL Dugout writer Marco del Wattsio has been in touch with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) today, who’ve revealed the 2012/13 game will launch “within the next week”.

    Fantasy Premier League Support said:

“The new game for the 2012-13 season will be up and running with new features within the next week.”

    1. new features!!!!! may be 3 wc :P

      1. Hope not! :-)

      2. Oh bloody hell no. Two is more than enough.

      3. new features!! #drolling

      4. Hope they change the assists rule and scrap the bonus points but I know they'll make it even easier to score points to appease all the muppets. Probably introduce some new recovered balls rule as the UEFA game does.

        1. what's the name of the girl?

          1. Her name is Rie Komiya and she's a hottie!

            1. off to google *pullingdownmypants

    2. Nice grav

    3. We Know.

    4. He got in touch with them last saturday also, and they said the very same thing. The problem is, they dont know themselves. People get in touch with different people at fpl and they all give different answers. Some have said, not before next week, some have said within the next week, and others said on monday that they're doing 48 hours of testing and itll be out the following afternoon. We just have to wait, expect it to be next week and then if its before, it'll be a nice supprise. :)

      1. u r right

    5. If people would stop wasting FPL's team's time with pointless FU**ING emails they might actually get on and finish the damn thing.

    6. WOW first time I've been moderated.

Probably a good thing in hindsight.

  19. anyone got a link to the rotation spreadsheet? Not got it saved on this comp

      1. I don't understand this 3 team rotation one :-/ what does the column show?

        1. It just shows the easiest game that GW from the 3 teams named in row 2.

        2. Each column is the fixture list you can have by rotating defenders from the 3 teams at the top of the column.

    1. And this is Parmtree & Milanista's but is this one out of date? Is there another with 3-team rotation on it?

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhFqkaFEe92idHp4TDVyRVU5UE5rbGlPN3dSQW9GYUE#gid=44

      1. the one that Minty posted is the best, it's this year's spreadsheet from Parm and Milanista, and it has a link to King Nemanja's 3 team spreadsheet.

        1. I am not yet convinced by this three-team malarkey.

        2. Actually, it is the same one that I posted :)

          1. so it is :D

Apart from 2 or 3 weeks the fixtures look pretty good for that pair, 4 weeks where both are at home or away, but only 2 where the fixtures are poor. GWs 9 and 12.

    2. so from looking at it I may just have to stick with Mingolet and Foster and just ride out the early fixtures

  20. A little John Clare to wake you all up, and stre-e-e-e-tch those synapses! ;-)

    THE SHEPHERD’S TREE.

HUGE elm, with rifted trunk all notched and scarred,
    Like to a warrior’s destiny! I love
To stretch me often on thy shadowed sward,
    And hear the laugh of summer leaves above;
Or on thy buttressed roots to sit, and lean
In careless attitude, and there reflect
On times, and deeds, and darings that have been—
    Old castaways, now swallowed in neglect;
While thou art towering in thy strength of heart,
Stirring the soul to vain imaginings, 10
In which life’s sordid being hath no part.
The wind of that eternal ditty sings
Humming of future things, that burn the mind
To leave some fragment of itself behind.

  21. new post btw

      1. bad timming

  22. Guys, anyone heard of the changes that FPL towers will implement in this season's game? I got quite pi$$ed off with the FPL fook-up last year...

  23. Morning all and good luck for the season ahead!

I was a (very) limited poster on here last season but I'm back under the guise of one of the greatest ever servants for my beloved SFC. Looking forward to getting involved more this year and launching an attack on the top 10k.

Anyone eyeing up any Saints players? I can see why the opening fixtures might put you off!
