Scout Report – Yassine El Ghanassy

Filed under: Scout Reports - Posted by: Paul

Having snapped up Ben Foster on a permanent deal earlier this month, Steve Clarke’s second move into the summer transfer market has brought Belgian midfielder Yassine El Ghanassy to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old arrives from Belgian outfit AA Gent with the Baggies afforded the option of making the deal permanent in the 2013/14 campaign…

A versatile player, El Ghanassy can play on either flank and also has the ability to be fielded up front – a factor which should be beneficial to his game time in the upcoming campaign and one that presents an intriguing option to Fantasy managers. The club’s sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth revealed El Ghanassy has been on the radar for a while now and was full of praise for the style of play that the new boy will bring to the Baggies:

“Yassine is a player we have watched develop for a couple of years. He has shown in Belgium his ability to put defenders on the back foot and create and score goals and he is on the fringes of the national team. He is an exciting, young player who we hope will grow into the league and prove a real asset. He offers us a different option and is the type of player I am sure our supporters will warm to and get right behind.”

The Statistics

El Ghanassy was picked up by La Louvière in his native country and made his way through their youth system before being handed a first-team debut in 2008 at the age of 18. He made just six league appearances for the club, though, before making his way to Gent. His first season in the Belgian top division consisted of a handful of games but the departure of Bryan Ruiz in the summer of 2009 allowed El Ghanassy to nail down a regular first-team role.

In his second full season for Gent, the youngster demonstrated the potential that saw the likes of Man City and AC Milan cast an eye over his possible acquisition, with 12 assists and six goals from 30 league appearances helping his side to the title. El Ghanassy is mainly renowned for his creativity and looking at the stats, it’s clear to see why – in total, he played 90 times for his former club, returning 10 goals and 22 assists before the Baggies came calling this summer.

The Prospects

West Brom were hardly prolific last time round – a total of 45 goals scored was worse than two of the relegated sides (Bolton and Blackburn) and indicative of their struggles going forward under Roy Hodgson. Bearing in mind that this is Clarke’s first stint in the managerial hotseat, the jury may be out on the Baggies potential for the season ahead, though the new boss has already hinted at a more attacking approach, particularly at the Hawthorns.

While this could prompt us to reassess the likes of Peter Odemwingie after the Nigerian’s poor previous campaign, Clarke has admitted he may take his time to integrate El Ghanassy into the first-team, suggesting it’s perhaps a better bet to hold fire for just now and assess the midfielder’s potential game time. At 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and only 4.7 in the Sky Sports game, though, he looks an intriguing proposition and, if fielded up front, would offer us an out-of-position prospect too, given that both games classify El Ghanassy as a midfielder.

“He is an exciting prospect who will add something different to our squad. We believe he has got the raw talent to make an impact here. This is a big move for Yassine. We’ll have to be patient with him as he settles into a new country and gets to grips with the demands of the Premier League.”

Clarke’s opening couple of fixtures – home to Liverpool and away at Spurs – suggests he may keep with those players more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League before unleashing El Ghanassy in a starting role. With home clashes against (EVE, RDG, QPR) in the following five Gameweeks, the young Belgian could well be one to watch if his manager affords him the game time his talent deserves.

  1. Ok should be sticking with this team once the prices and transfers are sorted:

    Federici -- Friedel

    A.Cole -- Clichy -- Hangeland -- McCartney -- Cuellar

    Frei -- Sinclair -- Walcott -- Noble -- Pienaar

    Aguero -- Torres -- Adebayor

    Transfers:
    Gw2: A.Cole + Torres --> Rafael/Smalling + Rooney
    Gw3: Walcott --> Sigurdsson

    1. a hit in the first GW! also i'd be concerned about Clichy. Maybe Lamps over Walcott first week?

  2. Anyone else here ignoring torres and goin for lamps and hazard? once the val/nani/kaga/siggy/vdv/demps situation become clearer by GW 3 they can easily be swapped for them. upfront the options are much more clearer

      ok; thanks

  12. Just realised Man Utd's friendly today is against Ajax Cape Town, as opposed to the actual Ajax.

  13. Hi guys what do you think about this team?

De Gea (Federici) - Play De Gea all the time
ACole Lescott (Fonte Barnett McCarthy) - Play first two then play one of the last three
Hazard Lampard Sigurdsson (Guthrie Britton) - Play first three then play one of the last two
    Aguero Rooney Pogrebnyak

    1. I've got the DDG/Freaky combo too. You're playing DDG against Everton gw1?

      1. I'm not.
        Fedrici will outscore him.

        1. I think so too. I imagine Everton will score and freaky's save points will add up

    2. loving the team

  14. RAMT (Rip Apart My Team) First punt of the season, feeling a bit rusty.

    Foster Mignolet

Kaboul Lescott Cole A McAuley Ness

    Noble Brunt Kagawa Hazard Larsson

    Pogrebnyak Rooney Torres

Couple of notes; Maybe eyebrows at brunt but could have a much better season as WBA play a more attacking stylee. Still have RVP nagging in my ear, I think he'll stay in this country. Ness is a bit of a guess but could be a good buy with his ability to play in midfield, he'll be bench mostly anyway.

Look forward to digesting your thoughts over the weekend along with the Gallons of Ale.

    Ta!

    OP.

    1. New Abbreviation Learned.

  15. Any other rotations except DDG+Fed and Jask+Bego/Soren?

    1. Krul+Mignolet

      1. Too costly, right? Do Vorm and Jaask rotate?

        1. cost as same as DDG + Fed

  16. Please rmt

    Sczenzy jaas
    Cashley lescot ferdinand mcartny tiernan
    Siggy valencia silva allen britton
    Aguero pog Podolski

    Bit different

    Thoughts?

  17. Any thoughts ?

    Vorm

    Hangeland Shawcross Cole

    Taarabt Hazard Bale Sinclair

    Pogrebnyak Aguero Torres

    Jaaskelainen
    Noble
    McMartney
    Barnett
    2.0 in bank

Kinda on the fence about my defence as well as Taarabt

    1. Stoke early on have some rough fixtures. £5.5m on a keeper is probably better spent on Krul than Vorm.

Personally I've gone Mignolet and Green as they rotate well and give me the best combination for less than £10m. I want my major money of forwards as they're going to be the ones you captain each week and expect to get the most points from.

No Man Utd cover could be a problem though the £2m in the bank probably rectifies that for you in G2.

I've gone for Kelly in Fulham defence (saves a few bob) and if you want Stoke then go for Wilson. Not sure Sinclair will be worth £7m this season either.

Think Taarabt will serve you well this season.

  18. Wow! How did that happen?

I got Fellaini in my team???

      1. That's what I thought, looked at the fixtures and said hell yes why not.

Just surprised myself but I actually am not unhappy with him in my team.

  19. Gotta be a chance lindegaard gets an early chance in goal by fergie. Is going with DDG asking for trouble? Early transfers are vital and wasting them on keepers sucks

    1. A bit risky always, as you have a shite keeper if DDG doesn't play

      1. Exactly. Hopefully we'll get some info on it in the next few weeks I guess

    2. I didn't like that so I have bypassed de Gea. Not interested in spending £6m on a keeper who may not play some nice juicy games.

Gambled on Rafeal instead for Utd defensive cover. Don't feel so bad if he's left out at £5.5m but I think if he's fit he'll start at RB for Utd.

  20. Hope djibril pulls up okay. Was keen to have him from the off

    1. 10 days they reckon. He'll be fine.

I have him in mine at the moment. If he's not good to go I'll swap him out for a diff striker before the deadline. No worries mate.

      1. Nice cheers nomar. He's always been one of my faves. Great buy for you guys. I'd happily welcome him back to anfield

        1. If he stays fit I reckon he gets 20 goals this season. Fixture proof too.

          1. Agreed. Just gotta make sure he drinks lots of milk, keep those legs strong ;)

  21. I have Vidic in my team but am wondering if Jones will also be playing to save 1.0m? I want to have about 2m going into GW2

  22. Ok I have a couple of choices, do you have any advice as of which to pick

    A)
    Begovic

    Lescott Ivanovic Wilson

    Hazard Bale Dyer Noble

    Graham Rooney Aguero

    Subs:
    Juicy Hangeland Maloney Cuellar

    OR

    B)
    Krul

    Lescott Cashley Wilson

    Hazard Kagawa Sinclair Noble

    Rooney Tevez Holt

    Subs:
    Mignolet Hangeland Maloney Cuellar

Thoughts? they're both pretty similar but some key changes which i would like some opinion on

    1. bit of a mouth full. I have sinclair for his penos. Ivanovic poss more of a goal threat. I would take Graham over Holt - believe he has nice fixtures.

  23. Not worth it imo

  24. Okay, today's friendlies
    1.30 Motherwell v Everton
2 Ajax CapeTown v Man Utd
    3 Colchester v WHam
    3 Port Talbot v Swansea
    6 Hertha Berlin v Norwich
    6.30 Fenerbahce v Newcastle
    9pm Toronto v Liverpool

  25. New page?

    1. Fail

    2. There's a new post...

  26. Kagawa or worth the extra 0.5m on Valencia?

  27. Kam
