Scout Report – Yassine El Ghanassy

Having snapped up Ben Foster on a permanent deal earlier this month, Steve Clarke’s second move into the summer transfer market has brought Belgian midfielder Yassine El Ghanassy to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old arrives from Belgian outfit AA Gent with the Baggies afforded the option of making the deal permanent in the 2013/14 campaign…

A versatile player, El Ghanassy can play on either flank and also has the ability to be fielded up front – a factor which should be beneficial to his game time in the upcoming campaign and one that presents an intriguing option to Fantasy managers. The club’s sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth revealed El Ghanassy has been on the radar for a while now and was full of praise for the style of play that the new boy will bring to the Baggies:

“Yassine is a player we have watched develop for a couple of years. He has shown in Belgium his ability to put defenders on the back foot and create and score goals and he is on the fringes of the national team. He is an exciting, young player who we hope will grow into the league and prove a real asset. He offers us a different option and is the type of player I am sure our supporters will warm to and get right behind.”

The Statistics

El Ghanassy was picked up by La Louvière in his native country and made his way through their youth system before being handed a first-team debut in 2008 at the age of 18. He made just six league appearances for the club, though, before making his way to Gent. His first season in the Belgian top division consisted of a handful of games but the departure of Bryan Ruiz in the summer of 2009 allowed El Ghanassy to nail down a regular first-team role.

In his second full season for Gent, the youngster demonstrated the potential that saw the likes of Man City and AC Milan cast an eye over his possible acquisition, with 12 assists and six goals from 30 league appearances helping his side to the title. El Ghanassy is mainly renowned for his creativity and looking at the stats, it’s clear to see why – in total, he played 90 times for his former club, returning 10 goals and 22 assists before the Baggies came calling this summer.

The Prospects

West Brom were hardly prolific last time round – a total of 45 goals scored was worse than two of the relegated sides (Bolton and Blackburn) and indicative of their struggles going forward under Roy Hodgson. Bearing in mind that this is Clarke’s first stint in the managerial hotseat, the jury may be out on the Baggies potential for the season ahead, though the new boss has already hinted at a more attacking approach, particularly at the Hawthorns.

While this could prompt us to reassess the likes of Peter Odemwingie after the Nigerian’s poor previous campaign, Clarke has admitted he may take his time to integrate El Ghanassy into the first-team, suggesting it’s perhaps a better bet to hold fire for just now and assess the midfielder’s potential game time. At 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and only 4.7 in the Sky Sports game, though, he looks an intriguing proposition and, if fielded up front, would offer us an out-of-position prospect too, given that both games classify El Ghanassy as a midfielder.

“He is an exciting prospect who will add something different to our squad. We believe he has got the raw talent to make an impact here. This is a big move for Yassine. We’ll have to be patient with him as he settles into a new country and gets to grips with the demands of the Premier League.”

Clarke’s opening couple of fixtures – home to Liverpool and away at Spurs – suggests he may keep with those players more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League before unleashing El Ghanassy in a starting role. With home clashes against (EVE, RDG, QPR) in the following five Gameweeks, the young Belgian could well be one to watch if his manager affords him the game time his talent deserves.

If RVP goes to Utd or City I'll have to ditch Aguero/Rooney and can't afford RVP. Would save a load of cash. Feels a bit weird not having Rooney though.

its a fair point id RVP goes there its to much of a risk of having either aguero and RVP or roo and RVP... but with the cash could be used to upgrade mids which could be a good thing

So the Sun DT is out, and is MUCH easier than FPL!

    DDG
    Vermaelen - Lescott - Huth - Santon
    Hazard - Siggy - Valencia
    Aguero - Rooney - Graham

Points system favours scoring goals and MOTM awards, so I've tried to incorporate that in.

If it favours scoring GOALS then I'd advise against Valencia. I also would think twice before having more than one player from the same team to perhaps increase the chances of having a MOTM.

Does anyone feel City are being a bit quiet in the transfer market? Obviously linked with RVP but beyond that I havent heard much mentioned. Or is it that they dont really need to bring in many players?

    Thoughts on Colccini/Gorkss/Tierney rotation?

Captain Colo nailed, Gorkss is doubtful now Mariappa has signed, but Mariappa will be nailed at the same price of 4.0 as will Gunter I believe, also at 4.0 . Tierney was first choice for Norwich last seas. until he got an injury around Christmas which ruled him out for the duration. Dont think they have reinforced in that position so assuming hes fit again he should start, but not all that positive regarding him.

      Rafael-----------Vidic-----------Ferdinand-----------Evra

It's possible that he'll be rotated with Smalling/Jones so I wouldn't bank on it. Even if he did start imo he's not the best pick for points other than the fact that he's a man united defender

I've a feeling I'm going to regret not having Shinji and Verthongen because of their goal potential. Jan has a better goal-scoring record then Vermaelan did at Ajax and at £6.5 I had no choice but to go for Younes 🙁 Anyway, what do you think of this as a team? Any suggestions?

    GK: De Gea (Jaask)
DEF: Kaboul Cashley Lescott (Fonte) (Cuellar)
MID: Yaya Hazard Noble Pienaar (Britton)
    FOR: Aguero Torres Ba

I've got a few question marks myself about this team. If Ba stays I hope Pardew will go back to a 4-4-2 as opposed to him staying out on the left flank. Otherwise I'll consider Torres -> Papiss depending how both players perform. I'm also anxiously waiting to see Everton's Pienaar move go through.

      Looks solid. Two things:
      1) Fonte has terrible fixtures and i think is a rotational risk
      2) You might want to go for someone a bit more attacking than Yaya for his 8.0 price tag

It's a really tough decision when it comes to £4.0 defenders so I guess I'll have to look in to that one a little more. It's a pity FPL didn't put Ferguson as £4.0 MF that would have solved my crisis because I could have had Britton -> Ferguson and then Yaya -> Kagawa . Thanks though, I'm considering Pog over Ba at the minute..

I have a similar team but Torres instead of Lescott. I would upgrade McClean or Graham for Silva or Torres and downgrade Lescott.

Any of the 4.0 bunch; you don't have any 4.0 defenders at all, remember almost every week you'll have at least one defender on the bench. Maybe Demel or McCartney from WH.

True, but by all accounts Kaboul was playing well last season. Can't see Caulker walkin straight into the team and Gallas has always been back-up. Not sure about the risk posed by Dawson though.

I'd definitely avoid him too. Besides Vidic, Evra and probably DDG, the United backline is very unpredictable at this point. But by all means take advice from someone more knowledgable than myself whether Kaboul is safe in his position

Why are people so keen on Maloney? Wigan only ever seem to play well towards the end of the season when they're in trouble. I'm not sure if he was a regular or not but 3 goals last season isn't amazing. Admittedly there isn't much competition in that price range but could someone explain why he is so appealing?

No, I meant that I currently have Pog in my team but don't like the look of his fixtures so could put Graham in instead from the start, but only if I had bench fodder behind DDG. But not worth the compromise, you think?

Pog starts with a DGW, so it's a no brainer. Still like to have some leeway to ditch him though if it doesn't work out, but a -4 hit could easily sort it out if you need to rework funds. -4 in the opening GW's isn't the end of the world.

Good point. I just feel a little restricted having him since I'm not confident in him and there's no easy switch to the 6.0 market. You're right though, could take a hit if necessary I suppose.

Are you sure about Vertonghen? He'll most likely do well but that means 3 very expensive defenders you've got there. Knocking him down a peg or two would allow someone a little more reliable than Tevez up front.

I think he is too expensive for most people who have Hazad in their team. I plan on bringing him in for Hazard after GW1 but like most people Hazard gets the nod due to the double GW.
