The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 3

Filed under: The Preamble - Posted by: Mark

Fantasy football management is just not easy. Just when you think you’ve got your ducks lined up, your options assessed and your mind made, along comes a transfer deadline day that shifts the goalposts. We now need “rethinking time”.

Friday was breathless, a day punctured by transfer moves that may actually have an impact on our Fantasy lineups and this morning, I for one, am left pondering how things have changed.

All the talk is of Dimitar Berbatov, interest no doubt roused by a proven goalscoring record and a price tag that screams for attention. It’s great to have Uncle Bulgaria back on our radars – his fringe-flicking languid talents have been missed and at just 6.9, I’m already shuffling virtual funds to find a spot for him. I won’t be the only one.

While those playing Wildcards can point to an early opportunity to get in early on such temptations, I’m of the opinion that, if anything, the freedom to take the plunge on these new variables is a little dangerous. With free transfers available, there’s no obstacle to hurriedly adopting Berbatov, Andy Carroll, perhaps even Clint Dempsey. These are potentially heavy scorers; undeniably there are also differentials – for now at least.

While I’d be fibbing if I failed to admit that I’ve not got a queue of changes to make and that a Wildcard would be welcomed as warmly as my Saturday morning bacon sandwich, I can find some comfort that it remains in my pocket, giving me the option to fully assess the impact of yesterday’s seismic shifts.

We’re expecting Andy Carroll and Dimitar Berbatov to be on the same pitch at some point today. A clash of styles if ever there was one. All eyes will be on the Bulgarian and yet Carroll, with the speedster Matt Jarvis delivering more crosses than Van Helsing, might just steal the show and headlines.

It would be no surprise if it’s Carroll’s prospects are the first snatch back our attention. Having sized up Berabtov for our third striker spot, suddenly we might just be left entertaining the idea of the inviting a ponytail into the dressing room. In my somewhat confused state, that’s a prospect that’s putting me off by bacon sarnie. Good luck for the Gameweek.

Will Hazard go up tonight/tomorrow. Thinking of doing Nasri and Zab -> Saylor and Hazard and would ideally wait for the Toon game first

Somalion - The Deadline day has robbed us of the greatest player to ever grace the EPL. Nicklas Bendtner, you will be missed. says:

Ahh right well lets break it down.

GKs: Friedel a bit at risk now but easily replaced. Fed is grand.
Def: Hange, Vidic and Cuellar all good picks. Zab is iffy, Demel is grand as a 4 mil.
Mid: Bale, Kags, Michu all solid (if Bale fails to get going then he’s easily replaced.)
Taarabt is crap, Kankles still an alright 4.5 option.
Forwards: Tevez and Torres are still good, Bent I have my doubts about but can be replaced easily.

So at most you need 4 transfers, worth wasting a WC over?

            Pat Mustard says:

Exactly, cheers mate, was thinking much the same, my main source of points are good and those that are in need to be replaced are cheapie options, easily replaced as you said. If UTD had a run of v favourable matches I would consider using it to get RVP in, but, they don’t and am happy with Kag as attacking coverage. Cheers for the nice write up.

    Lucky says:

There is 5 people in my team I want to take out. (Green, Davis, Kaca the 3 most urgent)

If I was to WC, I’d change about 11 of the 15.

    Is it worth doing?

    Jonny says:

Reckon I’m buggered in my H2H this week…me on the right:

    Friedel vs DDG
    Lescott vs Zabaleta
    Hangeland vs S.Taylor
    Williams vs Rangel
    Pienaar vs Snodgrass
    Noble vs Kacaniklic

Looks alright up until the mids…mind you, a cheeky Snodders goal could make the difference. Kaca on the bench is a blow, if not entirely unexpected.
