Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 6

Everton’s exceptional form and fixtures find their assets soaring in our Watchlist reckoning this week. Mid-price defensive assets play partner to the attacking verve of Leighton Baines, while up front, our options are plentiful. Too plentiful.

Our Watchlist rankings have been updated and can be found in your sidebar. Read on for the blurb on the key movers this week…

Goalkeepers

Simon Mignolet surges clear in our goalkeeper rankings. There are several factors at play here. Firstly, there’s little doubt that Martin O’Neill has his side playing tight, controlled football – if somewhat unambitious in attacking terms. Sunderland’s fixtures are also fairly favourable, handing the back four home encounters with Wigan, Newcastle and Aston Villa in the next five. Thirdly, while the personnel in O’Neill’s back four is hard to pin down following the injury to Carlos Cuellar, Mignolet appears to offer a secure option at a decent price.

West Brom’s Ben Foster continues to offer value and is retained in second spot in our rankings. Like Sunderland, West Brom have emerged as miserly mid-price contenders and Foster should benefit from his forthcoming fixtures to offer further returns. Unlike Mignolet, however, Foster could lose out in some squads to attractive options in the back four – namely Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell.

Both Merseyside clubs have fixtures that promise defensive returns, although the duo have factors that keep Tim Howard and Jose Reina out of the top places in our rankings. Howard will surely play second fiddle to Leighton Baines in our lineups, with further slots spared for the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic. As for Reina, his defence looks set to be ravaged by injury, although home encounters with Stoke and Reading in the next three could still offer short-term benefits.

West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen takes a tumble then, with fixtures stiffening somewhat, while Stoke’s Asmir Begovic is hovering. He looks a very strong option, along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul (when fit), once Gameweek 8 has passed.

Defenders

Leighton Baines has been on top of our Watchlist rankings for three weeks and, in the past two Gameweeks, has shown just why. Early adopters have benefited from a goal and assist in consecutive games, in addition to Saturday’s clean sheet at the Liberty. With fixtures flourishing, Baines looks assured of further returns and is undisputed as the must-have defender right now.

The West Brom defence continues to offer exceptional value with a tit-for-tat battle rumbling between the options – Gareth McAuley, Liam Ridgewell and even Jonas Olsson. The superior of the three is hard to predict but it’s clear that having one of this trio for the coming weeks looks likely to be profitable.

We’re taking a punt on Liverpool’s Glen Johnson, despite injuries in Brendan Rodgers’ back four and a poor string of results. Liverpool could well turn the corner over the next three Gameweeks, however, and Johnson looks set to be in profit from clean sheets with the potential for attacking returns. He’s been a strong influence coming forward in recent weeks and could make a decent differential over the upcoming trio of fixtures.

John O’Shea is your assured option in the Sunderland back four should you neglect the Mignolet option, while Vincent Kompany continues to be a presence in the top echelons of our rankings, despite the continued struggle for clean sheets. City’s fixtures are by far the best amongst the top clubs and, with Roberto Mancini sounding determined to solve defensive lapses, we see fortunes turning for Kompany in the next month.

Stoke’s Robert Huth and Fulham’s John Arne Riise are your differentials further down the rankings. Both will rely on attacking returns in the short-term, although Huth’s fixtures will lighten considerably from Gameweek 8 onwards.

Midfielders

Having opted for Steven Pienaar ahead of Marouane Fellaini last week we are forced to backtrack and reinstate the Belgian this time around. Fellaini climbs to the pinnacle of our midfield rankings, toppling the big guns on the back of his attacking role and strong returns thus far. Fixtures remain favourable and, despite Jelavic’s return from injury, we see Fellaini remaining a factor up top as he continues to look unplayable.

We’ve taken the unprecedented step to also included Pienaar in the rankings, such is the form being shown by David Moyes’ side. The likes of Gareth Bale and Santi Cazorla rank above the South African, while Eden Hazard suffers a decline as form and fixtures factor against him.

Swansea’s Michu also drops with form but has the fixtures to maintain his rank in the short-term, holding off the charge from West Ham’s Kevin Nolan who has shown consistency, even with Andy Carroll sidelined.

Lower down the rankings, both Raheem Sterling and Alex Kacaniklic offer value differentials for the coming weeks. Sterling, in particular, looks a great route to Liverpool’s next three fixtures.

Forwards

Our established heavy-hitting top two come under real threat as a result of recent rotation, with Carlos Tevez suffering a drop, allowing both Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert to climb above him in our reckoning. To be fair, all three have very strong fixtures to come, although the rotation doubt hanging over Tevez is a concern. Berbatov and Lambert look assured of starts, will be on spot-kicks and have the fixture to flourish for many weeks.

Tevez is still the cover option of choice within the City ranks, although tonight’s start in the Capital One Cup gives further cause for concern. Sergio Aguero could well threaten to replace him in the Watchlist from next weekend, while Yaya Toure continues to offer the only viable option in midfield while David Silva recovers his sharpness and Samir Nasri remains sidelined. City are a potential problem for Fantasy managers right now – excellent fixtures but with instability and uncertainty throughout the lineup.

Back to the rankings and Robin Van Persie is struggling to hold his top spot, particularly with United facing stiff opposition in the coming weeks. We’re banking on the Dutchman to retain his starts and continue to deliver goals, having notched five already in United colours.

There are great options lower down, too. Nikica Jelavic is only kept from our top three by the fact that there are such strong midfield options offering good Everton cover. Jermain Defoe’s form has him hold strong, while Demba Ba has also demonstrated consistent returns to offer another mid-price option. With Steven Fletcher also chipping in with four strikes from as many shots on goal, it’s clear that we’re currently spoilt for choice in this area of our squads. Configuring the right trio looks both vital and decidedly tricky.

Finally, we’re backing Luis Suarez to finally break out and offer yet another alternative over the next month. He travels to Carrow Road this weekend, the scene of a hat-trick last term, which included a spectacular 50-yard effort. The omens are good for Suarez, then, before Stoke and Reading turn up at Anfield in Gameweeks 7 and 8.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The value locked into him since buying at 9.3m and the pain to buy back is the thing holding me(and most I think) back.

It can be made up quickly with someone like Berba/Lambert though.

I'm seriously thinking of ditching Tevez now. Just not worth the headache. Options as I see it:

    A) Jelavic. Amazing fixtures, but I have Baines and Pienaar.
    B) Ba. In form and good fixtures. A little worried about his gametime and bust-ups with manager, especially if Cisse gets going.
    C) Berbatov. Very tempting, but Fulham are so much a home team. Also fixtures start to worsen soon.
    D) Fletcher. Can he keep it up? Nice home fixtures in particular, but worried about Sunderland's chance creation stats.

Obviously C and D release a lot of funds, which is a plus.

    Thoughts?

I'm also tempted but will first want to read what happened last night with Tevez playing. I think I will give it until gw 7 and the next 2 week int break to decide. By then Rooney could/should be back and we will know more about Tevez/kun rotation.

      A) no - i have baines/fellatio
      B) I have him and actually considered selling to Berba in gw 7 and then get HBA from gw 11
      C) Tempting. Makes it possible for me to hold onto Ba and get some price increases and team value back on the sale of Tevez.
      D)Not for me.

Regarding the relase of funds - Im considering getting Kompany if I sell Tevez. City have 0 CS compared to last season's 15. Surely now is the time to invest?

I just ditched Kompany. 2-2-2-2-2 was not worth 7.5m, whatever the upcoming fixtures. Mind you, it was to get Baines!

The thing is someone like Lescott/Kompany has a goal threat while a cheap keeper prob will make up some decent points over hart with save points.

              The old dilemma.

Yes, true. Also every time I brought in a Man CIty defender last season they seemed to go to pot, which tends to make me nervous. I think Komp averaged about 3 for me from 9 matches, and Richards less than that from 6. So they make me nervous.

In terms of Tevez replacements bar big hitters like Aguero/Suarez I would rank them in this order

      1. Berbatov
      2. Lambert or Ba
      3. Lukaku?
      4. Meh, Fletcher

Basically the first two options should be the only serious consideration. This is backed by stats and all that good stuff so not just opinion.

Already got Lambert, so it looks as though people think Ba or Berbatov.

Berb sounds good, but he has a shocking fixture this week, and if I'm taking a hit to lose Tevez, I'd quite like someone with a good fixture this week (especially as the rest of my team is mainly away from home). The other 3 all do have the good fixtures.

is Man City at HOME really a bad fixture? Fulham are strong at home and Man City just let in 4 goals against Aston Villa, who lets Aston Villa score against them?!

(I know they played a completely different team but Man Citys third team should still beat Villa)

Fulham may well score, but probably not more than one, which starts to reduce the odds of Berb doing well.

With the way his stats are looking there is a very good chance he will be involved in that one goal. And look at Villa, they put 4 past Citeh.

I have Torres, Tevez & Lambert as my strikers. Like the other posts I'm worried about Tevez being used as a sub again. However, Torres' form is even more worrying, especially as the Chelsea fixtures get nasty apart from Norwich in Round 7. I'm keen on Berbatov, Ba & Fletcher but I don't know which one of my so-called guns to replace. I want to hang on to Lambert because I think he can be the x-factor for Southampton when their fixtures are weak (like AV on the weekend).

    Thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

Torres should go first, you never know with Tevez, he may yet start. Either way I wouldn't expect much from Torres even if he does play a full game.

In terms of replacements I'd go for Berbatov but Ba is a close second.

I'm tempted to hold off a week but that makes my selections for this week tricky given the fixtures. I noticed also that people are talking Suarez up given Liverpool's next 3 games look reasonable.

    Current WC team:

    Foster Bego
    Baines Gibbs Rafael Demel Nelsen
    Cazorla HBA Pienaar Fellaini/Kagawa Sterling
    Aguero/RVP Fletcher Ba

(Berbatov to come in soon, Aguero would be a punt to make money/have a differential for a while) Fellaini/Kagawa is one I'm mulling over. If I get RVP then Kagawa won't make it for obvious reasons. If I go Aguero I might be tempted to go Kagawa because I think a) he's going to be amazing and b) I'd hate to miss out on Man Utd attacking coverage

Yep that's the plan...I'm sort of thinking of using this WC in the hope of increasing value, sure 2 Everton mids isn't the best long term plan but if Fellaini scores for instance his value will probably rise another .2 or .3 and I can decide whether to keep him or not instead of wishing I'd kept him on my WC later...I can't see myself buying him back if I have Pienaar...does this make much sense?

Well you should/could have made decent money on all 3 of Baines/Pien/Fell if you bought early over the weekend. All three are playable over the next couple of weeks so points and TV wise you should do well. Longer term if it was me I would ditch one of them and keep Baines.

Ye I wildcarded on Saturday night so I've all that sorted. Baines will not be leaving my team for the remainder of the season, it's which one I ditch first out of the mids. I think it will be Fellaini tbh...I have more faith in Pienaar long term.

In fact, if I hadn't have had Pienaar I wouldn't be doubling up, it's the fact that I have had good returns off Pienaar that I'm willing to give Fellaini a go too.

Hi Red. Absolutely not. If you had pulled the trigger on saturday, how much money would you have made? I'm talking money made on players that you would ship out before you finalize your team. If I was a few pennies short or my ideal team, I would probably wait until next week (or the international break), but I can just about afford the team that I want. Haven't pulled the trigger yet. But I'm looking over the ledge!!

I'm in the exact same position, infact i'd be left with 0.0 in the bank, so right on the team I want. (With a view to Change Kun to Pods & Free up cash). I understand what your saying, i think u'd probably be 0.2 maybe better off, however although u don't need it right now, it could be exactly what you need 2 gw's later.

I can afford my preferred WC team with 0.1m in the bank. Should I just push the button now, to avoid price swings messing with it, or should I wait for next week, and hope that any money gained, will at least match any price changes?

i have already made a 4pt hit, so I would save that by doing it now

There is nobody in my WC who I would be desperate to have play this weekend (other than ones I already have). Apart from Suarez (nor) instead of tevez (probably bench v fulham) or graham (stk)

What do you reckon? I'm not bothered about doing it this late in the day, as I can afford the team that I want

TW. I think end of season DGW's are overrated as a time to use your WC. I had one less DGW player than ENR last season, through careful forward planning. I just chose the WRONG players, otherwise I would have broken 100pts too. But you can choose the wrong players with a WC too.

The holy grail is a big DGW in Feb, March, so you can get the benefit of the DGW players AND set yourself up for an extended period of games. There wasn't one last season. So for me, saving your WC (when you have cause to use it) is a massive gamble, that won't have paid off if the only big DGW is only a few weeks before the end of the season

      +1

I prefer increase TV early on when a lot of casuals have not lost interest and there are often a "feeding frenzy" with buying and selling. I made 1m on TV in a normal week this and last year while many complained of a lack of activity over the first 2 week int break.

We usually know well in advance when a DWG approaches so it's not difficult to plan. Often the def do shit anyway in a DGW especially those of the lower teams(Unless BAE has a stormer like last year). So if you have 2 FT with a DGW appraching then a 3 trade(-4) can work wonders.

DGW's are the ideal time to take 4/8 point hits and not have it rest heavy on your conscience. Having a Wildcard for one is great I suppose but then you're stuck rebuilding your squad for ages. Technically using it with a few weeks to go would be brilliant as squad rebuilding would be rendered irrelevant to an extent. I suppose actually a good time to use your WC could also be around December if there is a DGW or two...because then you can just WC again and fix your team.

good point. a wc would allow planning for a big dgw and then the ability to swap out the team and set up for the rest of the season. however like you say its up to chance whether that situation will happen or not, or if there will be any profitable dgw's this year or just dgw's for teams like reading and qpr...

obviously the other reason to save the wc is if you have a lot of injuries or other problems. do you think my team will get much worse some other time in the season than what i have now (fed, fabio injured, marveaux not playing, graham being shitee, tevez probably rotated, rvp possibly rotated upon rooney's return)? just trying to weigh the benefit of using my wc now or if i should just take a hit and save it for later....

You are in a very similar situation to me. To be honest, the right thing to do is probably hold off, and make the necessary changes over a few weeks, as long as you can field 11 without more than 1-2 hits. I'm starting a new job next week, and won't have so much time to waste on here, so I probably should get it out of the way!!

thats true. its just looking at the wc team its so dang sexy! ;). haha. but seriously it looks really tempting and is nice not having to look at graham and marveaux and fabio. and not have to worry about tevez rotation.

yeahh you should probably use the wc now i'd think. make sure you can afford it. and you've already got it all planned out.

There is no guarantee on a WC though. Ask me.

I bought Simpson...he played 35 min and hasn't played since.
I bought Jarvis in for Nolan at 11h28 the Sat morning. Nolan has scored twice in his last 3 games. Jarvis got injured and has played 35min or so.
I sold Jussi. Ok Foster doing ok ish.
I bought Haz prior to a blank gw. I've got 6 points to show so far over 2 gw's and will prob sell in a weeks time.
            Bought Baines. GOOD.
Bought Michu and he has not done much lately.

I made 1mill in TV in a weel on players such as Tevez/Michu/Haz and that's about it.

Last year I made two to three crucial mistakes and am trying to avoid repeating this year.

Last year - had Baines for most of the first half of the season and he failed on me.. This year I got him two weeks ago regardless and am happy
Last year - I did the same with Bucktooth and have never been so frustrated with a player.. this year I am now considering doing it again
Last year - I jumped on the Ba wagon much too late out of pure stubborness.

    My question therefore is

    A) Do I take another punt on Suarez and pray it pays off like baines did or
    B) Do I jump on the Ba wagon now before it goes into overdrive...

    thoughts would be appreciated

The Baines thing was caused by Everton's early Season blues, which are not evident, this year. Think again.

looks like the old Tevez debate has been bitten off, chewed up and spat out.

i'll probably be keeping him until GW7 to see what the situation is. then, after the break, it might be time to push the WC button and bring in 15 shiny, new pplayers to frustrate the crap out of me.

Kun is better at home than away.. If City need to beat Dortmund next Wed, I think Mancini should play Aguero + Dzeko (who have experiences in Bundesliga). In this case, Tevez should start this weekend. - my wishful thinking of course.

Btw. I'm more likely to play Demel (qpr) and bench Rangel (stk) now. Sensible?

That's what I'm probably going to do Nat. Rangel's attacking stats are impressive but he won't be able to do anything if the ball's up in the air for 89 minutes.

From, what I have understood there is absolutely no pattern for Mancini in picking his team, other than Hart,Kompany and Yaya will play all the Important games if fit..

So, there is no way We can predict who will start which game

Surely if you've got this far without your WC then you might as well continue to muddle though with the odd hit. I think your firs team looks fine tbh.

I much prefer your WC team to be honest. To add to your current problems, you will want to get rid of hazard and michu in a couple of weeks as well. I think the key question is, have you decided for sure go without manchester strikers? Its a massive leap, and flies in the face of fpl thinking as we know it. If you have, then WC, because otherwise it will take you AGES to get where you want to be.

Very similar to mine. I've got saylor, fellaini, suarez, for your hughes, yaya, ba

Your substitute for Cuellar will get 1 pt....So you need 5 for Baines to make an immediate recovery. But in the long-term, you just need Baines to outscore Cuellar by 4 in the next few weeks. So it is logically speaking worth it.
