Moneyball – Adel Taarabt

Filed under: Members - Posted by: Chris Glover

The key factor for a player to appear in this series is to have a visible (or at least perceived) flaw which we believe is either over-emphasised or could end in the coming weeks. We’ve highlighted Jason Puncheon who lacked guaranteed minutes but has shone since securing his place in the Southampton first team. Leon Osman’s ‘flaw’ is simply being unfashionable in a side full of more exciting options, yet he is nipping at the heels of the more fancied Steven Pienaar and even Nikica Jelavic in total points.

This week’s player has a number of such flaws, though most of them are of no concern to us. Adel Taarabt is the prototypical mercurial talent; equally happy playing the part of a sublime match winner as that of frustrating prospect, doomed to never align his end product with his obvious talent.

Michael Owen could start this weekend with news of a Crouch inj doubt. Good scoring record at the Hawthorns which include a 4 goal performance as well as his 100th goal. Looking to be the only player in the world to give him the armband this weekend. Good luck to the rest of the world.

Through GW6-14 Baines’ fixtures were SOT wig qpr LIV ful SUN rdg NOR ARS Baines scored 24 points in 9 games, or a massive 2.7 PPG in those fixtures. 34 defenders outscored him in those 9 weeks, and 4 defenders scored the same amount of points (Clark, McCartney, Tomkins – all with 7 starts, and Ben Davies who is 4.0). When you sort into Value (form) he is the equal 102nd outfield player.
