Spot the Differential – Gameweek 22

As always, Friday evening closes with some overlooked alternatives for your consideration. Our trio of protagonists all have favourable home games on their respective agendas and while a couple of them are looking to maintain their impressive displays, our final selection will be hoping for a return to the form that ripped apart Premier League defences in the latter part of the previous campaign:

Bryan Ruiz

With many Fantasy managers opting for Dimitar Berbatov as a route into Fulham’s attack, the Costa Rican has been significantly overlooked. The statistics, however, highlight just how consistent Ruiz has been for Martin Jol’s side this season – he has scored or assisted in eight of his 12 appearances so far and averaged 4.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points per game. Indeed, his pivotal role for the Cottagers is summed up by their goal returns – Fulham have found the net 25 times in the 12 games with Ruiz in the side in comparison to seven goals in the 10 games without him.

Having recovered from a recent hamstring injury, Ruiz has made an immediate impact, producing a goal, an assist and a couple of bonus points since returning to the starting XI in Gameweek 20. Tucked in behind Berbatov, his creativity makes up for the fact he has found the net just twice – Ruiz has eight assists to his name, a tally beaten by only two other forwards; Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez, with 10 and nine respectively. Coming in at just 5.4 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of around 1% in both games, he looks a strong differential for tomorrow’s home clash with Wigan and looks a real alternative for those Fantasy managers eyeing up a 3-5-2 first choice formation with their winter wildcards.

Steven Fletcher

The summer signing from Wolves has been key to Sunderland’s attacking forays this term. Since making his debut in Gameweek 3, Fletcher has played a part in 11 of the Black Cats’ subsequent 19 goals, finding the net eight times and supplying a trio of assists. The Scot has been something of a talisman for Martin O’Neill’s side this term – Sunderland have yet to lose a game in which he has scored and, as a result, Fletcher has also picked up 20 bonus points; only Van Persie, with 25, has collected more.

Coming in at just 7.0 in FPL, he’s the seventh top scoring forward, having racked up 94 points so far – an average of 4.9 points per game. While a home clash with West Ham affords him the chance to further his appeal, Fletcher has a favourable schedule over the next few Gameweeks which could see him continue to rack up the points. Priced at 7.7 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 5% in FPL, he may prove a canny acquisition in the mid-price bracket as O’Neill looks Fletcher to provide the goals to engineer a scramble up the table for the Wearsiders.

Papiss Cisse

Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea brings his former Newcastle team mate back on the radar after an admittedly disappointing 2012/13 campaign so far. Arriving at Tyneside in last season’s winter transfer window, Cisse took the Premier League by storm, grabbing 13 goals and a pair of assists in just 14 appearances as the central forward in a 4-3-3.

Alan Pardew’s decision to shift Ba into the middle, either in a 4-4-2 alongside his compatriot or as the lone striker in a 4-3-3, proved hugely detrimental to Cisse’s prospects, with the former SC Freiburg man mustering a mere four goals over 19 appearances so far. Tomorrow’s trip to Norwich offers Cisse the chance to finally return to his favoured role and with the Canaries conceding in each of their last nine, he looks an enticing option, with a home game against Reading to follow next time out. Coming in at 8.8 in FPL and 9.3 in the Sky Sports game, Cisse’s lowly FPL ownership of 3% is understandable given his exploits so far, but he could be a different proposition altogether if he comes anywhere close to replicating last terms displays.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Is anybody aware of any typical differences between the first and second halves of the season which might influence strategy?

For example, and I have no data to support this, but between now and about April I sense there are generally less goals scored and more clean sheet kept by the top 2/3 teams at least.

Obviously in the last month of the season everything goes bonkers, especially with Wigan. 🙂

    Any others?

        No. 😀
But if you want a long explanation.

I've just shuffling around my WC team. Two version

Version A. Playing 3-5-2 with Davies at the back, Bale in the middle.
(and in GW 26 I will downgrade Fellaini to Punch and get Sturridge up front, playing 3-4-3 from then on)

Version B. Playing 3-4-3 with Luiz at the back. No Bale in the middle but a sub 7.0 striker. (and on GW 26 I will downgrade Luiz to Cuellar and do Fellaini -> Bale and upgrade the 3rd striker to Sturridge after)

I assume Davies and sub 7.0 will probably score pretty much similar on those 2 GWs

So it's down to Luiz vs Bale on GW 24 & 25.

Poor team value? You have a 5.5m plus keeper, a 6.5m plus mid, and a 5.9m defender on the bench....and you are on WC.

Too much spread around in my opinion. Fix up Lennon to Bale and get Fellaini in for PIenaar, by downgrading a few people.

You have Chez who you can play every week until GW27 (or even beyond). Downgrade Mignolet to Bunn or Federici.

If you want to strengthen in attack, you'll have to go uber defenders with poor team value.

    I have Lamps (c) as a punt.

Should I go Luiz or Cole?

Luiz potentially is a bit of damage limitation, if Lamps doesn't start, Luiz definitely does. I have a hope that Ramires plays wide right against Stoke (very feasible) and Oscar replaces him for Southampton.

But unlike most people I just don't think Luiz gets both of these games. I think Cole is more likely to get 180, albeit he is less explosive.

    Begovic
    Rafael Hughes demel (Davies cueller)
    Fellaini bale Walcott michu (sterling)
    Berb rvp ba(c)

Already used FT but hav 3m in the bank….
A: cueller >> Luis (-4)..and then bench demel
B: fellaini >> mata (-4)….will leave me with no defensive cover
    C: cueller + sterling >> Luis + g.ramires (-8)….and then bench michu who I don’t think will score

Posted this earlier but since it's DZ now, here are my thoughts on Luiz:

A lot of people on here seem to think that Luiz is nailed on but I beg to differ.

Luiz has started every game since Chelsea came back from the CWC in Japan. By my calculations, that’s 6 straight starts in 17 days. If anyone’s going to be rested, surely it’s Luiz. I know it could show how nailed on Luiz is but something tells me that’s not how Rafa rolls.

I can definitely see Ramires and Lampard starting in the double pivot, Cahill/Ivanovic/Terry at CB and ….Luiz on the bench.

Everton have won all 3 of their Prem encounters with Swansea without conceding a goal, Swansea are tired, plus, they defend a lot away. I can't choose michu for that one game over Puncheon who's got 2 including one against a side that can't defend that they thrashed 4-1 in the reverse fixture.

Michu has back and ankle issues.

Laudrup has spoken locally about the importance of Cups to teams of our stature.

We have the Arsenal replay midweek and with league survival all but guaranteed, I'm certain he doesn't give a hoot about the result at Goodison. 🙂

Puncheon doesn't have a huge sample of games to choose from but there's a nice 12 and 5 away to start with.

If you never benched everyone this site said never bench, you wouldn't be able to play.

Michu is one of the form strikers in the Prem. That said, his worship is verging on superstition. He fires as many blanks as he exploded. He is actually human. Check out his away stats, too.

Their scoring record overall has been low recently but ironically their away record is pretty tempting, 3 at stoke, 1 at Fulham, none at pool, 3 at QPR...

I think Southampton attack when they want to. They went overboard earlier in the season attacking good teams that can carve them up like united and city (scoring 2 against each). But I think they're happy attacking teams they see as less potent.

Doubt very much that we will score today and virtually guaranteed Michu won't get 90mins. He may not start.

Everton will finally get another clean sheet IMO.

Everton at home is a tough place. Not necessarily tough enough I can't see your lot scoring, but definitely tough enough that I'm willing to consider a goal threat who's playing Villa and Chelsea.

The game plan explained to the local press is to try and get a 0-0.

Rangel playing right midfield with Tiendalli RB to counter Baines and Pienaar.

    Put it another way fellas....................

Whatever 1, 2, or 3 (or even 4 for some) Chelsea players you pick, it will be the ones YOU DONT pick who get all the points.

Watch Azpi, Ramires, Oscar and Torres get all the points this week.

The rest of us using our WC's and taking 124 pt hits to get Mata in, Ba in, Luiz in, Lampard in, Terry back in, Cech back in etc etc will be breathing fire.

(as he goes to bed with Luiz and Mata(c) )

PGR. Was all primed to pull my WC on thursday, but that would have meant getting rid of suarez, who I bought at 9.4m. Then I did another WC draft, that allowed me to keep Suarez, but at the expense of 2 x DGW players, and there wasn't much difference to me current team (other than the rotating defenders), so I decided i'm better off keeping it until the end.

Fair enough! I too bought Suarez fairly cheap (not as cheap as you though) but sold him with my WC. His immediate fixtures are really tough and after that Sturridge will play up front. Think I'll go without Suarez for the rest of the season. RVP and Aguero will be my heavy hitters towards the end of the season.
Currently have RVP Lambert and Dzeko as my forwards. You think I should have Berb instead of Dzeko? Could also get in Ruiz which would allow me to upgrade Punch to Ramirez and Azpi to Cole/Luiz.

I still have both wild cards and would rather get Walcott for next week. If I don't take a hit, it will probably mean that I need to sell Bale next week to get Walcott or I need to take a hit ( downgrade a forward).
