The Stock Check – Sunday

Charles N’Zogbia inspires Villa to a precious three points, while United put in a frighteningly efficient shift to neutralise the Everton threat and grab the points via Robin Van Persie’s efforts. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s events…

On the Up

Robin Van Persie
With two consecutive blanks, the Van Persie naysayers were rounding on the Dutchman, fueled by Wayne Rooney’s consistent scoring. Amidst concerns that the Dutchman could be rested with Wednesday’s Madrid tie in mind, we’ve seen sales of Van Persie throughout the week which have even led to a price drop in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Today’s goal and assist returns, however, instantly stung those who decided to trade him out and underlined his importance, both to United and our Fantasy lineups.

Rafael
The Brazilian chipped in with a slide rule pass to set Van Persie on his way to United’s second, whilst sealing back-to-back clean sheets at the other end. With Sir Alex Ferguson clearly allowing Everton possession but dropping his side deep to defend with some determination, we could now see Rafael and the United backline begin to find form and start returning a stream of clean sheets. Rested back in Gameweek 24, the Brazilian’s performance today demonstrated just why he has cemented the right-back role this term.

David De Gea
Can we now settle on the Spaniard as an option in goal? De Gea has started the last 11 league matches and, given that he was not rotated ahead of the Champions League clash with Madrid, it appears his position is looking as solid as ever. At 5.5 in the FPL, De Gea offers a cheap route to the United clean sheets which may now start to follow with regularity as they close in on the title. Interestingly, Ben Amos was on the United bench ahead of Anders Lindegaard, and yet the Dane was on the bench for his country in midweek – presumably fit and well: it’s a situation that warrants monitoring.

Charles N’Zogbia
It seems unlikely that a Villa player can find his way into our midfields but there’s little doubt that N’Zogbia is the leading candidate on offer. The former Wigan man returned a goal and assist in the win over West Ham and has now fetched points in three of his last four outings. It’s clear that Villa’s top-flight status rests on his form and Christian Benteke’s goals.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
With Sir Alex Ferguson keen to ensure that his side conceded little ground to Everton, Rooney’s attacking instincts were shackled by a role out on the left flank for the majority of the match. His potential curbed, Rooney was rarely able to threaten in tandem with Van Persie and his owners will surely have been frustrated by the withdrawn role granted to him and the Dutchman’s timely return to form.

Marouane Fellaini
Sir Alex Ferguson deployed Phil Jones to snuff out the threat from the Belgian and it proved effective. Dropped deeper towards the end of the match by David Moyes, with Gareth Bale now a hot midfield property, Fellaini may be reluctantly sacrificed by some, with competition in the midfield area so fierce. The fixture list and past experience would suggest that patience with Fellaini will be rewarded, although, having earned an eighth booking of the season, another suspension is now a growing concern.

Joey O’Brien
Forced off on 25 minutes, the Hammers full-back was replaced by Guy Demel who returned to the fold after sitting out the home win over Swansea. This report states that O’Brien has suffered a thigh injury that will see him left at home for treatment while the Hammers squad go out to Dubai for a “warm weather break”. With fortnight before the next league action, it remains to be seen if the injury will put him on the sidelines for the Gameweek 27 fixture with Spurs.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I ditched Michu about 10 GWs ago. And I actually thought to bring him in for a hit for this DGW.

My plan was RVP+Nolan to Michu+Agurero for -8. But did not pull the trigger.

    So, now I got 12+2 from RVP+ Nolan = 14
If I took that hit, I would get 18+2=20(-8)=12 And possible (-4) for GW 27 too but still if Michu score more than 6 points against Liverpool..... 😯

Anyway, so far I am glad I sticked with RVP. 😀

Pepin – liked those assists by thiago he already is a quality player. can’t wait to see him in a couple years time! will be sad when xavi eventually retires but I think thiago will be a great replacement (though he’ll have tough shoes to fill).

Cannon – congrats on the new job! what sort of job is it may I ask?

Messimerized – gotcha. was your old latop broken or something? so we should expect you on most days in the DZ now? :D. yeah hope we smash Milan in the CL and then smash madrid in the cup.

I support whoever i like, yes. Usually teams who play or at least try to play football in a way i think the game should be played, or at least play positively and try to win rather than just 'not lose'. For this reason i love the likes of Barcelona, Bayern, Arsenal, Dortmund and so on. The same reason i can't bear the likes of Stoke.

      here's my story:

didn't follow european football much until a few years ago. before that I mostly just followed the local team here and the wc/euros. I knew barca were one of the top teams but didn't realize how good they were as most of my friends supported united or chelsea (and a few pool fans). then I saw them play in a friendly against the local team over the summer and realized they had some of my favorite players from the Spain Euro squad and I also fell in love with the way they played. and I love Spain, beautiful country. considering moving there for a couple years after college

so what's the verdict? am I a GLORY HUNTER in your mind?

        Unfortunately, yes.

There's a difference between acknowledging great football from supporting a club.

Top 3 characteristics of glory hunters..... Glory Hunter:

        1. will often choose a big club which is guaranteed of years at the top bracket of clubs
        2. have no connection to the club
        3. foreign to the country and city of the club

I think a lot of people became fans of United because of the way they played too. They had great players, playing fast, attacking, brilliant football and so people naturally became fans. Most grown ups don't become fans of a club so that they can brag to their mates about winning trophies, that's playground stuff really, as are accusations of 'glory hunter' too, imo.

          whatever you say...

if you don't support a team because they play great football how else should you pick which team to support if you are from outside of Europe? also I really love the model of their youth system. prefer it much better than the PSG/city method to success....

          -I have seen them live
-I also strongly support the local team
          - and like I said I liked them because of xavi, iniesta, etc from the Euros in 2008. Spain was my team then and that was before they had won a single trophy! so can't call supporting them being a glory hunter

Then there must be something you love about them that you hate to love. There is no rational reason to "hate" Barca given the quality of football they play.

I'm a Madrid fan. But it's more to Oezil and Mou coming in. Frankly in footballing terms, I appreciate Barca highly. Roughly only two things I dislike about them:

            1. Regarding their way of playing as the right way to play, as I believe there's no such thing. Well you can't dribble with your hands and other set of rules, but that's it.
            2. The thick political notion of we're Catalan not Spain. To be fair this could be present in other clubs as well.

For me, I don't like Berca, Just simply because they have beaten United in some Finals of Champions Leauge. I actually hate them But they are really the best team currently. But If without Messi, they won't be the same.

Frankly the notion of this statement "There is no rational reason to “hate” Barca given the quality of football they play." is one of the reason I hate em. Or to be soft, irked me. Nothing personal though.

I meant as a football team, the level of technical ability and team play. At a certain point you have to watch a sport because you love the sport and not because you support a team. It's not rational to hate a football team.

Fair enough. My dislike towards them are equal to people's dislike towards Cristiano just because he's 'arrogant' and the one's saying Messi got the edge just because he's 'humble'. I find those irrational, but it exists. Hence my dislike towards Barca.

I'm sorry Acqua but that is a very ignorant comment (the one above).

You don't simply call Barca fans glory hunters because they're winning or because they have the best players in the world.

If the Gunners were winning things now, would you like to be called a glory hunter? Didn't think so.

There is no criteria for being a fan of a club. You just are.

"foreign to the city or country of the club" - Are you really saying that United fans from India aren't real fans of the club? How about Madrid fans from Denmark? How about Arsenal fans from the United States (e.g. ME)?

And what do you mean by needing a direct connection to a club for you not to be called a glory hunter?

All Im getting at is in recent years when for example Barca or United (up until last year) were winning the title almost every year, there have been random people who magically become "fans".

Let me guess, all the Barca fans were fans before the Messi era when Madrid were dominating, right? WRONG.

Just to prove my point, I've decided to now support ManU, Barca, Bayern Munich, and Miami Heat... just until the end of their seasons though. 😆

Lads-thank you for your considered replies. One of the best responses I have ever had.

    Lemme rephrase my options:

    A. Two forwards in exchange for Studge+Suarez+4 points
    B. A forward+4 points but fielding 10
    C. A forward and defender in exchange for Studge/Suarez+4 points

Option B implies that my 11th player does a fixed 4 pointer
