Pre-Season

Sleeper – David Silva

Having helped steer City to the title the season before, David Silva’s displays ensured he was firmly ensconced in the premium price bracket when the player lists were rolled out across the Fantasy games last summer. The only midfielder to kick off the campaign with a double figure price tag, Silva cost 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after registering six goals, 17 assists and 21 bonus points, for an overall total of 184 points in 2011/12:

By the end of Gameweek 10, however, a paltry return of two assists set the tone for the remainder of the season as Silva, like City, failed to replicate the form of the previous campaign. Granted, there was the occasional explosive performance – such as 16 point hauls against Arsenal and Fulham in Gameweeks 12 and 23 respectively – which served a reminder of his undoubted talents but this merely masked his lack of consistency from a Fantasy perspective.

Despite 29 starts and three sub appearances in Roberto Mancini’s final season in charge at the Etihad, the little Spaniard produced attacking returns on just 12 occasions and, while he served up four sets of double figures in front of his own fans, Silva delivered just four assists on the road all term. A total of four goals, 12 assists and 20 bonus points helped Silva to an overall score of 147 points – just twelfth best midfielder in FPL, on a par with mid-price options Robert Snodgrass (152) and Kevin Nolan (149), as City’s doomed attempt to defend their crown led to Mancini’s dismissal.

The Prospects

With Manuel Pellegrini now installed in the hotseat, a change in approach looks on the cards. The Chilean has promised to deliver a more attacking brand of football in his first term in charge and has been quick to cite Silva as “a player who makes a difference”. While Pellegrini has already snapped up Jesus Navas from Sevilla and is keen to acquire Isco from former club Malaga, he’s likely to remain firmly reliant on Silva, then.

Tactics may dictate the degree of his appeal, though, with a handful of strong prospects vying for our attention at the Etihad. If Pellegrini opts for a 4-2-3-1, Silva could be handed a role on the left, with Navas on the opposite flank, though the club’s possible failure to capture Isco may well see Silva line up in “the hole” behind a lone forward – thus boosting his prospects. Similarly, Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 system would allow Silva to flourish from a central berth behind a front two, with Yaya Toure sitting deeper alongside Fernandinho.

City’s lack of a clinical edge cost them dearly last term – having racked up 93 goals in their title-winning season, Mancini’s men scored just 66 times in 2012/13, with their chief Fantasy assets frustrating time and again. Opposition sides seemed to have worked out how to frustrate the defending champions, with Mancini’s tactics proving largely ineffectual when it mattered most – an overhaul is sure to reinvigorate our faith in their chief protagonists.

After last term’s disappointment, a slight drop in cost seems inevitable across the Fantasy games. Silva is likely to slip to around the 9.5 mark in FPL and with the likes of Gareth Bale, Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla, Theo Walcott and Eden Hazard all looking set to rise in price after scoring 190 points or more last time out, he may ultimately prove better value if Pellegrini can revitalise City’s attack. Certainly, the opening three fixtures, which see City entertain Newcastle and Hull with a trip to Cardiff sandwiched in between, could hardly be any kinder and make a persuasive case for early investment in Pellegrini’s side.

    Confession - I am a lurker!!!

I noticed a few people saying that it's annoying how only some subscribers actually participate in banter, and therefore they shed their knowledge for the lurkers, but get nothing in return.

I wanted to point out that part of the reason for this is that the Lurkers don't feel they actually have much to contribute beyond the obvious. I am a decent, if unspectacular player, coming 16,000th and 10,000th the last two seasons. My contributions however might be thin on the ground - all I can really inform you is that Coutinho is absolutely incredible, and that Sturridge broke the LFC record of all time for the most goals in his first 12 games. If you fancy LFC players... you simply must begin with these two, regardless of what happens with Mkitaryan/anyone else we bring in.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to the likes of Triggerlips, TW and all the other frequent contributors - it's great to get ideas from consistently successful players and us Lurkers really do appreciate it. I always make the effort +1 comments that I find useful.

    Some comments/Questions:

    1) The Hazard/Mata debate is swishing around in my mind. I prefer Hazard. However, Mata's free-kick and corner responsibilities is making me lean towards him... what are people's thoughts?

    2) Do we have some statistical evidence that Clean Sheets increase (across the whole league) as the season progresses?

    3) I did some statistical analysis last season and discovered the following, averaged across my entire league (yes, I recorded this each and every week for every player)... Captain choices represent roughly 28% of the end of season total. In case that is lost on you, that's absolutely massive. One player, doubled each week, means over a quarter of your total. The other 10 players therefore are worth 72%, or 7.2% each ( although I realise it is not an equal distribution).

On the flip side, contrary to some interesting posts I read, your subs bench will contribute less than 4% of your total points (i.e. players coming off the bench). Your ViceCaptain is virtually worthless.

Hope that is useful to someone!

The Hazard/Mata debate can only really kick off when we know the prices. If there is a 1mil gap for example this will swing the vote.

Sounds like you do have alot of useful things to contribute. Be good to see more of your posts.

Re 1) Personally I think this goes down to what makes points in FPL - goals, assists and bonus. Both are great options, but Hazard has the potential to rack up points in all three areas, whereas Mata is more an assist man. For me Hazard shades it, but pre season will give us more of an idea

      2) I'll have to have a look in the members area, that will show that information, also clean sheets home and away....may take a bit of digging though. My instinct is that I think the rate of CS probably stays the same.

      3) Good captain analysis. Another regular here Gargamel has a tool that can work out even more detailed anaylsis of captain choices and bench points. We mention his research a bit on the podcast. Have a chat with him next time he's around.

        Regarding 2)

I think the top sides with big squads progressively pick up a higher % of CSs as the season develops because they are able to cover with good defending players for any injuries that occur.

I may be a regular contributor but i'm not a consistently successful player I hate to say. My first season I finished in the top 74k and this season i finished in the top 24k so you've done much better than me the last two seasons.

in my opinion, as long as you have reasoning and/or stats to back up your points, anyone can be a good contributor on this site. you should try posting on here more often 🙂

      1) i'm leaning towards hazard but may get both depending on budget and other factors. I know I want two chelsea attackers so if i can I may go with both if it's not clear who the first choice chelsea striker is

      2) someone has found it but I couldn't point you to it unfortunately. across the league as a whole I believe with the top sides in particular having significant increase in terms of cs

      1) im still undecided I think i'll start the season with both though if Chelsea dont sign another striker.

      2) ive not done any analysis but from memory theres always a surprise few mid range teams who keep a clean sheet at the start with the bigger guns conceding in the early games. Utd for example always used to shore up post xmas. As i said i have no analysis on this but thats what i remember.

I wouldn't worry about the whole lurking and not commenting issue. It's a forum, not a former soviet state, you're not going to be branded a social parasite. Obviously people enjoy interesting contributions, but that's such a generic truism it pains me to type it out!

1)Tough call between the two - Hazard's bandwagon is gaining some momentum in light of his end of season form, his more direct approach to gameplay, and some of his comments in the media about his goals targets the forthcoming season have only fanned the flames. Mata has been a consistent performer, and he chipped in with a lot of goals last season (especially away from home) - however he is far more of a playmaker than hazard is. FPL's points and bonus system rewards the more direct, almost selfish players. If Hazard plays as he hopes to, he could be an excellent asset next season. Obviously all this depends on what a certain Portuguese managerial maverick decides.

2)It's been done on here but I haven't got a link myself, and at the risk of repeating someone else's work, I haven't done the analysis myself. One thing I noticed is that there was a greater incidence of clean sheets that you would expect - whether this translated to a significantly greater number of clean sheets over all in the league is a different matter.

3)Excellent stats work; captaincy choice does play a huge part. Did you manage to compare the difference between how much a player got vs how much they could have got had they captained the highest scoring player every time? Some interesting results to be seen there. There was a greasemonkey script that used to do a lot of this for you before, may still be around for the 'new' fpl. How many people were in your mini league?

Lots of interesting points there, thanks for posting,

Thanks Mathmo, looks like everyone is thinking Hazard!

Stands to reason regarding clean sheets I suppose... surprised I hadn't thought of it.

Thanks re: stats. I didn't compare against the best in each persons team, however that will now be one of my additions for this coming season! 🙂

The ML had only 10 people (all full-timers at it though, so no dead weights), so not a lot of players (thankfully) but the numbers were all close enough, from top to bottom, for them to be statistically meaningful in my opinion. The captain represented just under 30% for the top two teams (not me)... the lowest being just over 26% (also not me!). I can't imagine the range would be much bigger with a larger group, assuming the players were all actively engaged and at least semi-decent.

How much do you think Vertongen will be priced at this year?

My guess is 6.5 or maybe 7.0. He could be something special this season, especially if Spurs get their act together and keep cleanies form the start. Great opening fixtures, got to shoehorn him into my team somehow as the 'none rotator' defender

not for me. I'd rather go pool or city with their opening fixtures. i'd rather wait and see if spurs actually start keeping more cs because 6.5 or 7.0 isn't worth it for a defender that scores every once in a while and doesn't keep many cs. especially considering how we'll want a lot of expensive attackers, every .5 counts

I think 6.5. 6m would seem a little low for his goal threat, 7m would be a little too high for me. 6.5 and I'd be very tempted.

For the next season, who do YOU think will be the most improved team? I see Southampton as this team, and many of their defenders will be good cheap assets such as Clyne for CS and assist potential. Gaston and Lallana haven't be THAT great last season, but I predict big things for them this year. Lambert is Lambert . I have no comment on his great contribution to Southampton. Have your say lads. Cheers.

for me it's gotta be newcastle. first half of the season they were plagued by injuries and second half of the season they were still adjusting to no ba and had poor form as well. remember they were top 6 and finished ahead of chelsea just last year if I remember correctly and since then they have brought in several good players to add to their squad. I see a much better season for them this year

yeah he could be a decent third striker option if cheap enough. though hba is another one to be closely monitored as a potential 4th mid

though at the end of the day what Newcastle offer's best are 5th mids ;). last year was Ferguson though I personally didn't buy into that. this year was Marv who I bought twice 😎

Ferguson was a legend two seasons ago. He allowed me to have RvP and Rooney along with a strong midfield 😀 Last year, i bought Sterling just when he starting grabbing goals at 4.5, then sold him for 0.5 profit at 5.5 when he started to get rotated. I hope Newcastle will play 4-3-3 so B-Arfa can be utilized in a better manner tbh. Can see him at 6.5 this year

Villa. Some potentially very good young players who've been galvanized together and battle-hardened by a season of constant adversity. Weimann and Agbonlahor are 2 decent strikers and will have a few quid to strengthen with Bent and Benteke for sale.

Not the most improved but the best value could well come from the Hull backline. Should be a banker 4mil and Bruce has always made teams hard to beat. Elmo might be gold this year.

I agree with that re Stoke. They spectacularly underperformed especially in attack.

You're right, but public spending on defence is public spending that is not going to hospitals, schools, roads etc. The profits are going to the private sector, although they are hopefully paying tax on that and as you say their employees salaries are in turn getting taxed and it is creating a lot of jobs.

Of course if they were paying teachers and nurses salaries then their spending would also come back into the economy.

I don't have a problem with spending on defence, just excessive spending on defence.

Will no-one think of the children etc...

How much does bias affect your FPL playing?

Does anyone have a hated player they would never ever bring in? Or put too much faith in their own team suddenly turning it around?

Or what about the infamous "gut" feeling - expecting a barren spell to suddenly come to an end, and finding your captain got a a whopping 4 points?

I've been relatively logical since Tim Cahill left for new shores, and do not despise any players (enough) to leave them out of my team. Sounds like a lot of people refuse to get the likes of Suarez/RVP/Terry/Tevez for various reasons, and some even omit whole teams entirely.

I noticed a fair few non-domestic players have done well in the overall standings, is this due to their lack of allegiance to a PL team/less exposure to the 'soap opera' of the football in England? I remember an interview or two with past winners, where a lack of bias was cited as a specific reason for success (Chris McGurn, perhaps?)

So, who's suffered and succeeded with sticking to their guns?

Even for those who understand biases and try to avoid them, they still creep up in less obvious places. I'll analyze more players more intensely from teams I like and skimp on analysis on non-obvious players on teams I don't care about.

If I analyzed my punt selections, the majority would come from gut feelings, which I feel are totally bias based and favour teams I like in general.

Should the +1s and -1s be split into two separate scores?
The first score could be +1 for "I strongly agree" and -1 for "I strongly disagree". This is the older usage of +1 and -1.
The second score would be +1 for "This is an interesting and informative post" or "This could be the start of an interesting discussion" and -1 for "This post is insulting or annoying or uses aggressive language" or "I think this sort of post ought to be discouraged". This, I think, is the usage intended by the reputation scheme.
The present system can sometimes be a bit confusing.

I usually + 1 posts that are interesting, informative, or show the user has put some thought into it. Or if someone has been particularly helpful to another user. Or if it's an especially cheesy pun.

I haven't seen a reason to -1 anyone yet, because I personally would only do so if it's an offensive comment that hasn't got round to being modded yet, is particularly unhelpful (ie "make me a sandwich"/any other purposefully annoying reply to a newbie) or it's part of a trolling/slanging match. I've seen some forums go down the route of users negative repping people just because of an ideological disparity or they support another team, which is absolutely senseless.

    Sone Aluko - Hull City

Played for Aberdeen and Rangers, great wee attacking player tricky on the ball and a great source of goals and assists. Unfortunately he got injured about Christmas time and missed the second half of the Championship season but prior to that injury Bruce was quoted on saying that he was Hulls best player before the injury.

Now i suspect him to come in a 5.0 or 5.5 which could be gold. He's very Moses-esque and Bruce has already ear marked him for great things in the PL -

    http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/Hull-City-s-Sone-Aluko-Premier-League-storm-Steve/story-18979916-detail/story.html#axzz2XDVVSBBJ

If he manages a full pre-season hes in my GW1 squad.

How do you rate Stekelenburg as Fulham's new goalie? Though Schwarzer is and old grump, Stekelenburg has a big name to follow:
With Fulham finishing "only" 10th this year, Schwarzer was the 6th best scoring goalie this season. Only selected by 4.3% by the end of this years season, he finished the last GW as the best scoring goalie with 10 pts.
Schwarzer saved 3 pens, more than any other last season, though he only received 2 bonus total. If you look at his last 5 season, his average points score is 135.6. and his average ending price at 4.94. Impressive of a player turning 41 in october!

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

A new batch of recruits will be joining the Premier League this year. Some coming up from the lower leagues, others from abroad.

But which will be this year’s Michu or Hazard?

And which will be this year’s Boselli or Borini?

Plenty of transfers already made. Villa and Liverpool have already been very busy. What about Jesus Navas or Fernandihno at city? Also there are dozens of new players to the Prem League coming up with Palace, Hull and Cardiff. Zaha at Man Utd perhaps as well? Lots of potential Bosellis, Holts, Lamberts and Michus already.

Navas- I think he'll flop, doesn't seem like an FPL type player, hasn't scored in La Liga this season.

Fernandinho- Has history of scoring from deep but will be limited this year, especially with Yaya next to him, 5 goals, max.

Zaha- Will be a squad player for a majority of the season, so won't get enough games to warrant ownership.

Cardiff- Should be solid at the back so a defender won't be too bad, but I think they'll struggle in the goals department, especially if the don't improve on Campbell/Maynard.

Hull- Will concede a fair few, but also score a fair few, will most likely be the Blackpool of a few years ago. Avoid

Palace- Will need to strengthen to stay up, a decent striker could be an FPL option, and Zaha IF he returns.

Gonna bet that the new Michu hasnt appeared yet, the transfer needs to be a relatively quiet move after fpl has opened. The latter so that they are rushed to price and dont do their research properly.

Well there have been absurdly clinical and shot taking forwards in the Italian and Spanish leagues. Thing is I don't think most on that series of articles have arrived at England yet (bar Aspas, which I am getting GW1 btw if not costing an arm and a leg)

Deulofeu and Ince have the potential to be FPL gold in addition to Damiao if he moves to Tottenham.
Next year's Boselli might be Mikhtaryan. The man is good, but he's too slow for my taste.
I see Swansea underperforming in the league because of EL, so dont be surprised if u see rotation in that team with Michu being the Cisse of last year.

I hope they really sign that new coat. Arsene looked like he was wearing a full body straight jacket last year

The Thiago thread on the Caf is absolute gold. Some Ciderman has said Thiago and Strootman will sign at 11 today and muppet madness is happening. Bloody funny. They all know its a wum, but a lot of entertainment.

"The red curtain had been in front of the press since they entered the room. Voices whisper and mutter, echoing around the room with wonder. Today is the first day of David Moyes reign as Manchester United manager. It had been 15 minutes since the journalists were allowed in, when suddenly the lights dimmed.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the moment you have all been waiting for..."

      Silence.

Celebration by Kool and the Gang starts to play. The curtain lifts. There is a runway.

The music kicks up a notch... the announcers voice comes back on.

"Introducing, our first new signing. All the way from Barcelona. THIIIAAAAAAGOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Boom! Confetti bursts from the runway, Thiago comes out. He's on rollerskates wearing Man Utd speedos. He screeches to a stop at the end of the platform and does a wink and point. He skates back to the side of the runway and dances on the spot.

"Coming up next, signing number two.... KEVIN STROOOOOOOOOTMAAAAAN"

Confetti launches from the stage again, but Strootman is nowhere to be seen. The reporters gasp as they notice him ziplining from the rafters to the stage. Also sporting Man Utd speedos, he lands like a graceful swan, turns around and belts out a rendition of Oh Robin Van Persie.

The music is still blaring. "CEEEELEEBRAAATE GOOD TIMES, COME ON!". At this point the press are swaying side to side and clapping.

"Time for signing number three. We have no need for him but we signed him anyway. IT'S GARRRAAAAAYYYYYYYY!".

More confetti. Garay, donning United speedos, backflips down the stage. It's the greatest thing some of these reporters have ever seen. He flexes at the mic and then joins Thiago and Strootman in dancing at the side of the stage. They form a guard of honor.

"Time for the piece de resistance, people. Meet the man who made this all possible. DAVVVIIIIIDDDD.....MOOOOOYYYYEEEESSSS!!"

F***tonnes of confetti rain down. Moyes is in a bitching suit. He struts down the runway like a don, reaches the mic and signals for the music to stop. Suddenly everyone notices the human shaped object right by the mic that has been there the whole time. It is draped in a red sheet.

Silence. Moyes stares at the press. One journalist cannot take his death stare and runs out of the room crying.

Moyes grabs the sheet, and pulls.

      It's Cristiano Ronaldo.

BOOM. the music kicks back on. Confetti is absolutely everywhere. Moyes rips off his entire suit in one move to reveal United speedos. He's also wearing rollerskates, nobody noticed this. Ronaldo, also in United speedos, starts dancing. Moyes does the best move everyone has ever seen. He is joined by all his new signings as they strut around the stage.

      "CEEEELLLLEEBRRAAATTE GOOOOOD TIIIMES, COME ON!""
