Scout Report – Allan McGregor

Steve Bruce moved to solve Hull City’s goalkeeping dilemma earlier this week with the acquisition of Allan McGregor from Turkish side Besiktas on a three-year deal. The 31-year-old makes his way to the KC Stadium for an undisclosed fee and his arrival continues the recent spending spree which has also brought Curtis Davies and Ahmed Elmohamady to the club:

With last season’s number one David Stockdale now back at parent club Fulham, Bruce has been desperately scouring the market for a first-choice stopper. Although the Tigers have been linked with the likes of Kaspar Schmeichel and former Wigan man Chris Kirkland during the summer, McGregor admitted to the club’s official website that he’s been aware of a possible move for a number of weeks now:

“I got a call a while ago about the interest from Hull City and things progressed from there. Holidays stalled things a little bit, as they do at this time of year, but everything is done now and I’m just really happy to be here. I kept an eye on what was going on back here while I was playing in Turkey and I actually watched the last few minutes of Hull City’s game against Cardiff on the final day of the season – it was exciting. I’ve had a few chats with the manager here and I really had belief and confidence in what he was saying about the club. The chance to play in the Premier League is also a massive thing and I can’t wait to get started here.”

The History

A product of the Glasgow Rangers youth academy, McGregor’s career began back in 2001-02 with a couple of appearances for the first-team at the age of 20. He failed to play a single minute of the following treble-winning season and after featuring four times during 2003-04, spent a couple of years on loan at St Johnstone and Dunfermline. By 2006-07, however, he was installed as number one at Ibrox and picked up the Players Player of the Year Award as a result of his displays between the sticks under Paul Le Guen.

McGregor played 196 times over six seasons as the ‘Gers first-choice keeper, winning 11 major honours over his time at the Govan club, before making his way to Besiktas last summer after Ally McCoist’s side were relegated to the Scottish Third Division. Over a single season in Turkey he produced five clean sheets in 26 matches (his replacement managed three clean sheets in eight matches by comparison) and helped his side to a third place finish before Bruce clinched his signature earlier this week.

On the international stage, McGregor has turned out for Scotland Under 21s on six occasions and has also received 29 caps for the senior side. Although his heroics between the sticks have been crucial to Scotland at times, his overall number of appearances would surely be greater if he hadn’t been banned for over a year due to alcohol-related “multiple breaches of squad discipline” back in April 2009.

The Prospects

McGregor certainly seems guaranteed starts for the season ahead and as a first-choice stopper for one of the three promoted teams, can be expected to be priced in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games. Given that each of last term’s main promoted keepers came in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a similar price for the Scot looks on the cards, then.

Looking at their defensive displays in the Championship in 2012/13, the Tigers registered 16 clean sheets last term (10 at home, six away), though questions remain over whether Bruce’s 3-5-2 system may be picked apart in the top-flight. While plenty of saves are expected, McGregor’s Fantasy potential could also be determined by Ahmed Elmohamady’s classification in the Fantasy games – the Egyptian produced three goals and nine assists from a right wing-back role and, if listed as a defender, will surely offer us the most appealing route into Bruce’s backline.

For those eyeing up the Hull keeper as a possible rotation option, the opening schedule has certainly been kind to the promoted club. Their first six home games welcome Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace to the KC in a run that takes us up to Gameweek 12 – as mentioned in a previous article, Hull and Palace alternate home/away across the entire season, though for those looking for a short-term fix, West Brom, Norwich and West Ham offer up a strong goalkeeper combination over the opening six fixtures of the season.

Some more interesting news on the Higuain deal.

'' Marca is saying that no club has made a formal written offer to Real Madrid for the player and he’s much closer to staying at the Bernebeu than moving anywhere. Given that Higuain has made it quite clear he wants to leave this summer, I suspect this is shenanigans on the part of Marca who are happy enough to further the Madrid agenda when it comes to transfers. None of this is interesting! It's just bored journalists selling stories!

      And greed agents selling hype.

I generally tend to believe Marca when it comes to the Spanish market, but even I feel this is bullshit.

Really don't see any reason why the Arsenal deal shouldn't go ahead.

Worth pointing out that Malky Mackay isn't one for throwing players in at the deep end. Cornelius is young and new to the country so despite the price tag he might be bedded in. See how Kim was slowly introduced last season (and to great effect) for an example of that.

These Suarez to another English club rumours are pretty ridiculous to be fair. The only way he’ll go is abroad and only then if a premium is paid for him. I still expect him to be a Liverpool player next season.

      Spot on.

The major reason Suarez gave for his departure was his dislike of English media, and NOT dislike of Liverpool. There is no reason why Suarez should go to another English club, unless, maybe if a big money offer.

Pts per million considerations in the Sky game:

I've compared last season's points to this season's costs to get a feel for where the best pts per million is in the Sky game. Looking at the average PPM for the stated number of players we get:

    Top 1 / 5 / 10 GKs - 22.3 / 19.5 / 17.0
    Top 4 / 20 / 40 Defs - 19.6 / 17.6 / 15.6
    Top 4 / 20 / 40 Mids - 27.0 / 21.6 / 19.3
    Top 2 / 10 / 20 Fwds - 25.3 / 21.3 / 18.5

I used a 1-4-4-2 ratio since that's broadly in line with the total number of players in the game and so gives a fairer comparison than just taking the top x number in each category.

    Observations:
    - Across all sample sizes the defenders have considerably the worst numbers
    - Midfielders outperform in all categories
    - Upgrading all keepers by just 10 points (eg giving them 5 games where they take 5+ saves) makes keepers top all but one of the sample sizes.

    Conclusions:
    - 3-5-2 is clearly the best formation.
    - Don't get any premium defenders. It's a waste of cash/value which should be spent on premium mids/fwds which will give you captaincy options
    - A premium keeper could well be worth the money as long as it doesn't compromise getting some stand out captaincy options

    Save points:
They've clearly attempted to increase the cost of the keepers who made lots of saves, eg Jaask, Migs but they haven't upgraded Ruddy, Vorm or Stekelenberg and based on the stats for their teams over the last couple of seasons there could be some value there.
The same can be said for Cech if you think the Chelsea defence will concede as many chances this season as they did last.

As an addendum to this, based on last seasons save stats the save bonus per club for a select few are:
      WHM - 30
      Swa - 26
      Sun - 26
Che - 24!! (treat with caution, the season before last it would have been far fewer)
      WBA - 20
      Utd - 16
      Liv - 10
      City - 8

I've therefore been pessimistic in my post above of only adding 10, so I'd argue the best value of all is comfortably seen in the GKs.

Nice. The other analysis is to look at the marginal PPM - ie we have to put at least X into buying a striker so what return do you get for the additional Y for getting a better one?

The other question I have is how the returns look for the top defenders - ie does Baines score like a midfielder but with added clean sheet points?

and moreover many of those who are above him are people you might consider captaining, eg Walcott, Bale, Santi, Gerrard, Hazard, Mata etc.

I think what stands out in this game is that generally the players who offer the best PPM numbers, are also the highest scoring players. I feel like FPL is different to that, given the squad element.

Morning! Came across a funnny article, so I thought I'd share it with you. The least impressive records of PL:

    - Fewest victories in a season: Derby. Only 1 victory in 38 games! (07/08 season) Derby also hold the record of most games in a row without a win, 32 games!

    - Ipswich, Sunderland and Derby hold the record of most losses in a season. 29 losses in a season!

    - From 18th August - 8th December (2012) QPR played 16 games (from GW1) without a
    win.

    - Sunderland lost 14 of 19 games at The Staduim of Light (both the 02/03 and
the 05/06 season) and wins the prestigious award of most losses at home in a season.

    - The Black cats also hold the records of most losses in a row - 15 games, in the 02/03 season.

    - Everton, with 289 games lost, has lost more games in the PL than any other club.
Spurs, hold the records of most conceded goals (1066).

    - Wimbledon played at Selhurst Park, 26th January in 1993 against Everton with
only 3039 attendances. Impressive. Record of fewest attendances in a PL game as well.

    - Swindon (93/94) and Derby (07/08) conceded more than any other clubs have ever done in a season, with 100 goals (in 42 games) and 89 goals (in 39 games) conceded in a season. In this season Derby also has the worst goal ratio ever, 20 goals scored and 89 conceded.

    - Saints, Boro, Sheffield United and Derby only managed to score 8 away goals throughout a season. Another record for Derby.

    - Fewest CS of a season you say? Birmingham, Derby, Blackburn and Norwich holds the record of only 3 clean sheets.

    - The 07/08 season, Derby (hat off), had a total of 11 points when the season ended. What a season.

    - Richard Dunne, wins the award of most own goals in the PL history, 11. According to Wikipedia (not sure if it's true) He has 11 goals in his career. 22 goals overall. Not that bad?

    - Andreas Johansson, Keith Gillespie and Dave Kitson all received a red card before even touching the ball. All of them after being subbed on.

    - Dunc Ferguson, Vieira and Richard Dunne, has the all time record of red cards, with a total of 8. Kevin Davies, has most yellow cards (100) and has also caused mos fouls against him than any other, 782.
