Pre-Season

Friendlies Round-Up – Tuesday

Papiss Cisse helps fire Newcastle to victory in his first appearance of the summer. Cardiff fall to defeat at Brentford, though Kim Bo-Kyung impresses with a goal and assist, Chris Hughton admits Seb Bassong may struggle to make the start of the season after undergoing minor surgery over the summer, Roberto Martinez discusses tactics, while Michael Kightly and Brek Shea grab a goal apiece as Stoke finish their US tour with a win:

St Mirren 0 Newcastle 2
Alan Pardew named a strong starting line-up for the trip to Paisley. The Magpies moved to a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa partnering Fabricio Coloccini at centre-half, while Hatem Ben Arfa and Sammy Ameobi were handed the flank roles as Papiss Cisse made his first appearance of the summer after resolving his dispute with the club. The Senegal striker needed just 19 minutes to make his mark, firing home thanks to an Ameobi assist before Mathieu Debuchy notched the second before the half-hour mark, with Vernun Anita supplying the final pass. Both Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye were given the night off as Pardew rang the changes as the second period progressed, making eight alterations in total as he continues to utilise the depth of his squad in order to boost match-fitness.

After the game, Pardew revealed he’s expecting progress to be made over the next few days as the club step up their search for a new forward. The Magpies have been linked with Darren Bent, Loic Remy and Bafetimbi Gomis over the past few weeks but, as yet, no deals have come to fruition – a situation their manager reckons will be resolved as he looks to rectify his side’s meagre 45-goal haul in the previous campaign:

“I’m hoping something happens before the Rangers friendly. I think that’s a realistic deadline for my team in the background to hopefully get something done. All I would say is that we’re keeping our options open regarding strikers because we can only do a deal that’s right. If a deal’s right we’ll do it, if a deal’s not right we won’t do it. You can only be as confident as the feeling that you’re getting and the feeling I’m getting at the moment is we’re pursuing and at the end of the day we’ll get something.”

Brentford 3 Cardiff 2
The Bluebirds fell to their first defeat in three pre-season matches yesterday evening. Worryingly for Cardiff, Malky Mackay fielded what many feel will be his first-choice back-four next term, with John Brayford making his first start at right-back alongside Ben Turner, Mark Hudson and Andrew Taylor, though Brayford and Taylor were amongst several second-half changes late on. Further up the pitch, Mackay omitted new boy Andreas Cornelius from the squad and handed Fraizer Campbell the lone striker role, with Craig Bellamy and Craig Noone on the flanks. Once again, though, it was Kim Bo-Kyung who was the Welsh outfit’s main man – the midfielder scored for the second successive match and also provided the assist for Campbell to fire the visitors two in front before Brentford clinched victory with an impressive comeback.

After the match, the Cardiff boss admitted he was keen to bring more new additions to the squad, though refused to confirm reports linking him with a loan move for Steven Caulker. The Tottenham man’s potential arrival may raise question marks over the starting roles of Turner and Hudson, with the former perhaps the likeliest to make way should the deal transpire:

“The group we have are at the fitness level we expect them to be at, so that’s important. but at the same time I still need to add two or three players. We’ve got various plates spinning. We’re working hard on it but they’ve got to come in and add to this group. We’re looking at good players to come in and we’re trying to improve in all areas.”

Brighton 1 Norwich 1
The Canaries recovered from back-to-back 1-0 losses to register a draw at the Amex Stadium last night. Chris Hughton handed new boys such as Ricky Van Wolfswinkel and Leroy Fer starting roles, while Nathan Redmond was selected in the first XI for the fourth match in a row. Redmond supplied the assist for Jonny Howson’s goal in a game that saw Gary Hooper make his Norwich debut after climbing off the bench to replace Fer with half an hour remaining.

Hughton – who made six second-half changes – was without many of his first-choice players for the clash, though, as Seb Bassong, Michael Turner, Robert Snodgrass and Anthony Pilkington all missed out. After the game, the Canaries boss explained the quartet’s absence and admitted Bassong may struggle to make the season opener against Everton, though refuted the recent speculation linking Snodgrass with a move to West Ham:

““It is very, very simple and I can set the record straight. It is a family issue. If he (Snodgrass) is not with us at Cambridge United then definitely at Braga. Any speculation is wide of the mark. It is a personal family issue and we look forward to seeing him again later this week….We’re hoping that Michael will play some part on Friday (against Braga). He is closer than Seb. Seb is maybe a week or two behind him. It is going to be very, very tight whether he makes the start of the season or not. We’re disappointed that we haven’t had them for the bulk of pre-season. Seb and Michael both had small operations in the summer and they are a little bit behind the rest. Pilks has got a slight knee problem but he will be fine. He has missed this game and he will probably miss Friday as well.”

Philadelphia Union 0 Stoke 2

Mark Hughes shuffled his pack and made seven changes for the final match of Stoke’s US tour. At the back, the Potters boss handed Marc Muniesa and Ryan Shotton the full-back roles and gave Thomas Sorensen a rare start in goal, while further up the pitch Michael Kightly and Brek Shea patrolled the flanks, with Marc Wilson afforded a start in central midfield as Cameron Jerome led the line in a 4-5-1. The two wingers played a pivotal part in the victory, grabbing a goal apiece, while Kightly also supplied the assist for Shea’s strike in a comfortable win. Hughes made a number of alterations after the break and introduced Peter Crouch and Kenwyne Jones as he moved to a 4-4-2 but the visitors were unable to find the net again.

Stoke suffered an injury blow midway through the game after Shea was forced off following a rash challenge and according to his manager, the US international looks likely to miss the start of the new campaign. A livid Hughes spoke to the club’s official website as he awaits a clearer prognosis:

“It’s incredibly frustrating and hugely disappointing to lose Brek, especially in a game like this where you would expect players to look after their fellow professionals. I really have no idea what the lad was thinking about by going in for the challenge like that. Maybe he was trying to make a name for himself, I have no idea, but whatever he was thinking it was totally wrong. We have been waiting a while to get Brek back here, and up until the injury he looked very bright, very dangerous and appeared to have a real understanding of what his role was on the left hand side of midfield. He will go for a scan tomorrow, but we know that we will definitely be without him for a number of weeks. It looks fairly serious, but fingers crossed it isn’t anymore serious than we already know it is.”

In Other News
Roberto Martinez took time out to discuss his tactical plans for the season ahead the other day. The new Everton boss has mainly utilised a 4-3-3 formation since arriving on Merseyside but reports in the local press indicate he trialled a three-man backline midway through the weekend win at Blackburn, with a defence comprised of Sylvain Distin, Johnny Heitinga and John Stones allowing the Toffees to move to the 3-4-3 shape Martinez preferred at former club Wigan.

The Spaniard admitted post-match that due to the numerous options available in his first-team squad, he’s unlikely to stick to just one set formation for the campaign ahead – a suggestion that we cannot be guaranteed the likes of Seamus Coleman will be fielded as an out of position midfielder every weekend:

“I don’t want to be a team that can only play in one way and to do that you need to experiment and try things in pre-season. This is about making ourselves a bit more expansive in terms of how we play and that is going to be a real strength for us. I want the players to be flexible and take on many different systems. You can see that certain players are suited to certain systems and I think it is about picking the right time and moment to use those players in those systems.”

Martinez also rolled out an update on Antolin Alcaraz, after the Paraguayan was omitted from Everton’s US tour due to a hamstring injury. The Toffees boss expects the defender to be back in training prior to the start of the season, with the problem deemed not too serious:

“Antolin will be out for a couple of weeks, I wouldn’t expect any more than that. It was more beneficial for him to work at Finch Farm so we can make sure we get him fully fit as soon as we can.”

Manuel Pellegrini has admitted Matija Nastasic requires further tests on the ankle injury sustained against Sunderland in Hong Kong last week. City were expected to find out the full prognosis of the central defender’s problem earlier this week after he was stretchered off in the 1-0 win over the Black Cats but with the situation still unclear, the Chilean was a little downbeat in his assessment:

“We will have to wait to find out how serious the injury to Nastasic is. At this moment, we don’t know whether he needs an operation or if there is another solution but I have a lot of players that I can rely on. There are enough players who can come in to replace any that are missing.”

While the news could promote the likes of Joleon Lescott or Micah Richards as a potential partner for Vincent Kompany, a length of absence may force Pellegrini into the transfer market again. Reports in Italy suggest the agent of Cagliari’s Davide Astori is already in talks with the Etihad club, while the new City boss may renew his interest in Real Madrid’s Pepe, having been linked with the Portuguese player all summer.

Anyone remember caulker starting at 4.0 million two years ago. Missed the start of the season and went unnoticed until he scored a couple of goals. Great buy.

Looks like Soldado is off to White Hart Lane. Watched a lot of his games at Valencia, and a few for Spain.

He is an excellent finisher and has the ability to turn, accelerate and get away from a defender in an instant. This is allied with an excellent ability to read the game; as such he is often in space, timing runs well, and running on to through balls. Not overly tall for a center forward, but not particularly short either, he struggles in the air sometimes. His strength on the ball is especially impressive, he combines the quick turns of a more diminutive striker with the body strength of one with a more robust frame.

This tends to make him especially lethal in the box. Combined with his lack of creativity and a reluctance to be involved in build up play, he has scored every goal I've certainly seen from within the penalty area. He is capable of holding the ball allowing others to run onto a return pass, but this is rare, which is reflected by a fairly humble assist tally - around four last year.

His finishes are calm, but he is capable of powerful shots too. He is predominantly right footed, and while he will take half chances, he tends not be overly eager to shoot with reckless abandon. His goal ratio of 24 in 33 starts is excellent, and confirming the stats - he shoots less than three times per game. This is what I'd expect, he can create space and attempt shots quickly, some of which can be blocked or saved. Every time I've seen him one on one or through on goal, they keeper has not saved it.

A good signing for Spurs, provided he gets the supply and settles in well. Finishers such as Soldado have struggled to adapt quickly, tending to flourish once they are bedded into the team and the league.

Will be a W1 starter for me also, IF Bale stays, it's pretty certain that 75% of the goals will go through one of the two as Spurs lack clinical finishers aside from these two.

He's a good to very good footballer. Tbh however I am surprised spurs are paying 25million for a 28 year old who has never played outside of spain. If he doesn't take to English football straight away then he will probably only have 2/3 years left at the top and with a hugely diminished re-sale value. I suppose when your selling a player for close to 100 million pounds however you can do these sort of things.

That's true, however some argue that they are getting a striker at the peak of his powers. And I suppose if their talismanic Welsh winger was to leave, £25 million would pocket change 😉

The lack of creativity is interesting. Means he will solely rely on goals. I like to get forwards with a bit of both...but they tend to cost more. If Soldado is under 9m I'd consider getting him, but above would be too steep for someone unlikely to get assist points or bonus unless he scores a hatful.

In the land of "false nines" Soldado is very much the original variant of the role. The reality is Spurs have a tremendous amount of creativity in their midfield even if Bale leaves. Players such as Holtby, Siggurdson, Dembele and Paulinho are all capable of opening up defences with their passing, which is exactly the sort of supply Soldado thrives on. He won't get assists and unless he was to replicate his scoring form with a seamless transition, I'll stay away.

FPL seem to over-price potentially successful imports lest they have another Michu on their hands it seems. I'm sure at this stage they'll just take a cursory look at his stats, see the 24 goals in 33 appearances is La Ligua and slap on, at the very minimum, a 9.0 price tag.

I would definitely adopt a wait and see approach. It's my belief (personal , but still grounded in a few stats!) that stronger, powerful center forwards who are good in the air have an easier transition into our league than the finishers. Soldado occupies characteristics of both which makes the decision tricky, but as he's certainly no Christian Benteke, I'll stay away for the first three games at least.

Yes, I think Spurs wanted to get in a "pro" an experienced guy who is at the top of his career. As opposed to finding that 23, 24 year old from the continent or South America who might work, or might not. Still costing £15-25m.

It's a lot of cash to splash, particularly for Spurs.

Is it me or are there virtually no safe options for forwards? Even RVP is questionable for me because of his price and fixtures. On top of that there are many great options in midfield to choose from. Even if Bale goes I think Silva, Coutinho Walcott and Hazard will do extremely well; better than most forwards IMO.

Yeah I'm not paying big for forwards this year.
I think I'll go with guaranteed starters with good chances of solid returns.
Think Soldado will be my most expensive forward, with Lukaku and maybe Benteke for the DGW, but I may opt for Aspas instead of the latter to save a few $'s

Yes, there's so much class at Midfield, no doubt. The lack of obvious forwards is also because so many clubs are going with 1 up top Striker in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or whichever variation. Many are guys expected to poach or hold while the wings and CAM gets involved.

But I do think we'll see a few nice options emerge, just not now. That might be RVW, Hooper, Bony, Kone, Bent/Cisse/Remy, Benteke, Soldado.

Once Suarez returns, if you aren't an RVPer, then I'd think he's a near must have.

With the new season about 2.5 weeks away, Arsenal have reduced their playing staff by 13 people.

They have brought in one injury prone youngster on a free transfer.

This is the team that just about scrapped into the top 4 last year & have about £70m to spend, before the money generated from selling players.

They will not miss a single one of those players. Wait until the start of the season before baulking at the lack of incoming players.

Our form at the end of the season was astonishing. I for one am not remotely bothered about adding superstars, I hope Giroud gets another chance this season as I though he had a very impressive first season, along with Cazorla, and to a lesser extent Podolski.

Don't get me wrong, I would have loved Higuain, and also like the look of Bernard, but I still have faith.

We need to strengthen the squad though, no doubt. We got relatively lucky with injuries last season.

I've been on this site for 2 weeks now and I've picked up on the fact that there seems to be a general consensus on certain players/strategies to implement. When I look at teams my friends/randomers have picked however there seems to be less rules and much more diversity in peoples team selections. I play poker for a living and see similarities in terms of the way that ''online'' players perceive the game and how random people do........so do people from ffs generally do better than Joe public in general?

Here are a few of the many trends I've noticed

1- Not to take too many gambles on unknown players

2- Most money is spent on the midfield area

3- People don't really seem fussed on big name/high priced goalkeepers

4- People look for the lowest possible value for subs

There'll be too many good forward options, assuming a few transfers go through:

Arsenal (Suarez), Chelsea (Rooney), Man Utd (RvP), Liverpool (Sturridge, Aspas), Man City (Aguero, Negredo), Spurs (Soldado), Southampton (Lambert, Rodriguez) as well as the likes of Bent, Cisse, Bony and Anelka.

As a Liverpool fan I would hate to see him go, and am almost certain that he will stay. If he were to leave it would be to a club outside the premier league, the reason for him leaving would be (as he stated) the fact he hates the press etc. in this country. Therefore he will not join any other club in the PL, and will only leave for clubs in other leagues, ie. Barca or Madrid

I seem to remember being similarly dazzled by the wealth of forward options this time last year: Aguero, P.Cisse, Bent, Dempsey, Siggy, Silva, Graham ... the options were whittled down fairly quickly once the league started.

I'm including midfielders as forwards since you buy them for their goalscoring and assisting ability.

But you take my point? There are always loads of good looking options until the league starts and then there are just a small number of form players and many of them are unexpected.

Might double up on the City attack with Kun and Dzeko. A Coloccini-less Newcastle back-line is a very weak thing.

Well if the translation is correct: http://metro.co.uk/2013/07/30/manchester-city-boss-manuel-pellegrini-insists-edin-dzeko-will-be-his-first-choice-striker-3905377/

                The full translation included this:
"I very much trust him and I can say that every other player that have come are a support for a squad that needs to have more than one player in every position."

            From nufc.com:

"Under newly-adopted FA rules though, Colo won't miss any competitive games through suspension as had initially been feared. The nonsensical situation where a ban would be served only if the host FA bothered to inform their English equivalent of any red or yellow cards has now been resolved.

That means that Colo will be available for our season opener at Manchester City"

I have never understood how football sites like TalkSport know what was said in meetings like the supposed one between AVB and Bale 'in the last hour.' Did they plant a camera inside a book in the room, or have an insider reporting back to them!?

I'd love to know what indication they got that this meeting was even going down

Agent probably leaked it. Real will probably want this to be public knowledge. They usually enjoy having their targets either hand in a transfer request or speak out about wanting to join the club. They are a horrible football club.

Afternoon. Have I missed anything big this morning? I see Aguero has a knock and could be out until the international break? This means Negredo must be starting, I assume? Possibly Dzeko with the recent comments? Kun is in my team so this needs to be fixed and I want a Man City player for those lovely fixtures.

    RMT and bit of info.

    Guzan - (Ruddy)

Toure - Zabaletta - Coleman (Clyne - Collins)

    Silva - Hazard(c) - Coutinho - Lennon (Bellamy)

    Lukaku - Negredo - Anelka

Using the goalkeepers as a rotation options.

Hoping Toure gets the nod can be 15 clean sheets, Zabaletta form will hopefully carry on, Coleman hoping that Martinez goes 3-5-2 and Colemans used on the wing and Clyne/Collins for Rotation.

Silva to pick up form with new manager and signing, Coutinho to carry on his form, Lennon to step up his game filling in for Bale, Hazard for DGW and Bellamy as cheap option.

Lukaku for DGW, Anelka for fixtures and proven point scorer and then Negredo for the fact Aguero not really had much game time and Negredo seems to be in decent form.

Will be interesting to see how Chelsea line up against Inter & the rest at the International Champions Cup in America. I might change my Chelsea players (except Hazard) depending on that. I would assume Jose would go for a strong line up against the strong teams present.

    My current team is:
    Hart
    Luiz, Zab, Coleman
    Silva, Walcott, Hazard, Mirallas
    Lambert, Lukaku, Giroud

    Subs: Davis, Barkley, Chester, Turner.

I went for Hart despite the extra 1M because of Cities initial games (Newcastle, Cardiff & Hull) which seem more likely to get more CS than Liverpool's first 3 (Stoke, Villa & United). All I did was downgrade my 2 4.5 sub defenders to 4.0s. I plan to use my WC after GW3 and most likely include RVP. Barkley will most likely get game time due to recent comments from Martinez (a 'diamond') and his potential is worth 4.5M in my opinion.

    What you guys think?

I have never done it before, but with all the confusion about starters/DGW/Bale etc, considering doing this team for GW1 and then WC the week after. I don't think I have effectively used my WC in the 2 years I have played the game so giving it consideration....

    Migs

    GJ Mert Terry

    Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Snodgrass

    Negredo, Giroud, Lukaku

Obviously putting all my eggs into one (4.5) basket(s)....

    Thoughts?

    Advice required!
My 5th Midfielder is Brady 5m (0.5m more then the baseline midfielder price)
My 3rd Striker is Cornelius 5.5m (1m more than the baseline striker price)

I plan on rotating these 2 as i think there is potential in both.

My question: Is this too much money to have on rotating players?

Has stated that only club he will take a wage cut to go to is Everton. Everton are considering this. Anyone who takes him on, good luck to them. He is a player who always found the greed of footballers distasteful, following it up a while later by saying he only ever joine QPR for the money. He is no where the quality player he rates himself to be. An ill mannered, jumped up prat.
