The Burning Question – Is Dzeko’s Bandwagon More Boselli than Michu?

Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Team: The Unusual Suspects

      Mignolet & Davies
      Zabeleta, Terry, Mertesacker, Dawson, Coleman,
      Hazzard, Waclott, Mirallas, Couthino, Morrison
      Dzeko, Lukaku, Lambert

      Research complete & happy!

Nastasic will come in for Zabeleta as soon as he is fit saving 0.5M
Very keen on Ivanovic might still use him for GW 1&2 - will see who is regular starter
Will rotate with Shaw & Collins when needed - both cheaper by 0.5M
Mignolet rotated with boruc when need.

Ditto. I had a lot of good luck in the early stages. Fortunately I managed to stay consistent though anf finished 300. But there is no way I would have been anywhere near that high had I not got off to a good start. Getting that good start will give you some breathing space. Cheers lads, might be a differential to collins especially when his place is in doubt and injury, Norwich had the 8th best defensive record last season and you would have to expect it to improve. Ollson if sealing his place in the staring xi. Clean sheets and a link up with Nathan Redmond could yield points. Is he worth the gamble do you think?

    MIGS GK OPTIONS:

A lot of managers have chosen to go with Simon Mignolet this season after his summer transfer to Liverpool following an excellent season from Sunderland. With Pepe Reina still at the club and seemingly available to fight for competition in the coming season FPL priced both keepers at £5.5m but, following Reina's loan move to Napoli, Mignolet stands alone for a team who have consistently provided one of the best defenses in the league.

Such has been the draw of 'Migs' that many seasoned FPL managers have even abandoned our tried and tested formula of the "cheap GK rotation" method.

I am not going to talk about the pro's and cons of prime vs cheap rotations as that comes down to personal choice but just wanted to show the options that those who are going with Migs should consider for their second GK slot as many are asking and even more are making a choice within their RMT's that in my opinion should be avoided.

So what choices do we have? Well realistically only two tactics can be adapted as taking on two prime options is no value for money and contradicts the principle of one of them being prime.

Option 1: MIGS all the way: You have set your stall out that Migs is your man and you will play him week in and week out regardless and so you don't care who is on the bench. There is no £4.0m option that is currently starting and so you are writing off the second slot to free up funds elsewhere. The general consensus on the best option for bench fodder is to go with the players with the lowest % ownership as they carry less "risk" of being ditched by the masses and costing you value.

Option 2: Rotate away from the Elite with a 4.5m starter: Even with one of the top defenses in the league there are still games that you want to avoid and I know this will be up for debate but I am a Liverpool fan and I would say that if you are taking him out then home and away to the top 5 teams in the league are the games that should be your priority. That's 10 games out of 38, some of those taking option 1 will tell you that for nearly a quarter of the seasons games it's not worth having an extra 0.5m sat on your bench but that comes down to the balance of your team.

So the 4.5m options, currently there only appear to be 5 starters in Boruc (Sot), Marshall (Car), Mannone (Sun), Speroni (Cpl) and McGregor (Hul). Now it should be noted that Boruc and Mannone face competition and there is an outside chance that Adrian of WHU could gain a starting berth but these are scenarios that we have to adapt to throughout the season.

The 10 games that I highlighted again the top 5 teams take place on GW's - 3,10,16,18,19,25,30, 32, 34 and 36 and so I have reviewed all 5 options above for these ten weeks:

    Boruc: nor-sto-new-car-eve-STO-NOR-NEW-CAR-EVE
    Marshall: EVE-SWA-WBA-SOT-SUN-swa-eve-wba-sot-sun
    Speroni: SUN-wba-che-avl-mcy-WBA-sun-CHE-AVL-MCY
    McGregor: mcy-SUN-STO-MANU-FUL-sun-MCY-sto-manu-ful
    Mannone: cpl-hul-whu-eve-car-hul-CPL-WHU-EVE-che

Make your own choices based on these games but the current pick in most RMT's is Boruc and clearly being away from the safety of St Marys for all of the first 5 matches makes him a poor pick for me to start the season. As opposed to Marshall at Cardiff who have 5 home games. Now it should also be noted that that 6th match in the series is not until GW25 and so we have the perfect chance to pick Marshall now and then switch over to Boruc with our January Wild Card which then gives us Soton's pefect 5 home games to finish the season, assuniming Boruc has nailed down his place by then.

This is entirely too long a post than I intended it to be but I hope it has helped some of you 🙂

No I am saying that if you pick Migs then you should start with Marshall and switch him to Boruc in with your Jan WC.

I think I will most likely repost that tomorrow without all the other drivel but now I have this to reference back to when peeps ask why.

Well interestingly enough the major argument against Migs this season is the value of Toure and I would probably say the same thing for Vidic at ManU

Good luck, I hope he doesn't get rotated out at all again as at 6m you can't afford anything but 4.0m on your bench I don't think.

(I also think that Liverpool will keep more CS's than Man U this season as they have a more settled defense/system)

i went initially for Migs and 4.0

now have changed to Foster (5.0) and boruc (4.5)

both equate to 9.5 but the latter gives option to rotate - not entirely sure if boruc is number 1 for soton

      what say you all?

Completely agree. Really helpful. Been on Cech / Boruc, intending to change Cech to Migs when I have the time.

Now considering changing Boruc to Marshall.

Only problem now is week 2, I'll have Cech (mun) and Marshall (MCI). Still I kind of fancy a Chelsea cleanie there.

Now if Given would just get the F out of Villa and go somewhere as first choice, then the 4.0 keeper would be sorted! 🙂

Some nice info you've got there.

I personally think spending 10m on keepers is too much, but if I had to rate them on compatibility with Migs:

      Marshall
      Boruc
      Mannone
      McGregor
      Speroni

I have ALWAYS gone for a cheap rotation myself but I really didn't like the match up's this season as even the below mid table keepers seemed to be coming in at 5.0m min. And with Mannone/Boruc being the best option I found you are starting the season with two keepers that even to start the season, let alone in a few weeks, might not be first choices and I hate to waste even free transfers on my GK's.

Now I understand why people are saying rotate Migs with Marshall rather than Boruc; it's because of the H/A rotation. Personally I don't worry about that too much and fixture-for-fixture, I'd still prefer to pair him with Boruc.

I have him and i aint worried, he'll be fit by the time he gets called into my starting line up, im sure

Coleman, he will start and has a lot more attacking potential

Should I be worried about Collins not starting on Sat?

A little. Friday pressers should help clear things up though.

RMT please lads, need advice especially on the striking force, is lukaku worth the risk? Also my inclusion of Gerrard is to add an element of diversity contrasting to the popular option. Coutinho. Or is that just stupid? I'm a stoke fan and have high confidence that Pennant will start so no need for criticism on that front. But generally, a good team?

    Boruc, Foster

    A Cole/Zabaleta/ Toure/ B Turner/ Coleman

    Hazard/Gerrard/Walcott/Mirallas/Pennant

    Lukaku/Jrod/Soldado

Lukaku could get a massive score so it's a calculated risk in my opinion. Don't like Cole as he has zero attacking threat. Pennant won't play much either.

    Any opinions please guys?

    Boruc (4.0m)

    Ivanovic Toure Mertesacker Chester Parr
    Walcott Silva Hazard Mirralas (4.5m)
    Lukaku Benteke Soldado

    Thanks!

Pretty much my team, although I have Coutinho over Silva and a better defence. Not a Toure fan myself.

Also, I hope your 4m keeper is Davis as Boruc isn't nailed on.
