The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I've been agonising over RVP, but looking at that it just doesn't seem "right". You've done a grand job with the budget, but Cole every week? Lots of unanswered questions with Lamps and Dzeko too...

I've decided to wildcard, not because I've had a bad start (although I have) But because I want to try something different that may flop but may also give me an advantage. So I'm having a punt on four big attacking defs for good teams with good cs potential, two big mids and three big strikers. I will play these every week (mostly) regardless of fixtures, and fill in with the best two of the rest... Atm I have...

    Mig (4.0)
    Zabaleta Vertonghen Ivanovic Coleman (4.0)
    Michu Walcott (5.5 4.5 4.5)
    Soldado Aguero Sturridge

I have nine that will play every week so I only need to pick two of the cheapies.. Hugely risky but you know me, always up for a punt... I really think it could do ok with the new bap system..

    Wish me luck 🙂

        Cheers!

Yeah. Set my team up for GW1 only this year. Reshuffling everything in GW2 has been what strategy has worked the best so far for me.

Personally manage much better under pressure, without the cursed wildcard possibility inviting complacency.

    a)Ivanovic -> Zabaleta
    b)Hazard -> Silva
c)Lukaku -> Bony, Dzeko, RVW, Lambert, Welbeck

      keep ivanovic
      keep hazard

      get rid of lukaku....

hazard can score against ANYONE... keep him in your team for 4-5 games and then evaluate .. i think he is a season keeper.. its been only 1 game dude chill out

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2397451/Arsene-Wengers-tired-formula-just-doesnt-add-anymore.html

"Wenger’s detailed knowledge of every player’s contract even created an issue when Oxlade-Chamberlain was making substitute appearances for Arsenal last season.
Written into the England winger’s deal is a clause stating that Arsenal must pay Saints £10,000 every time Oxlade-Chamberlain appears for more than 20 minutes.
Incredibly a trend emerged, with Wenger bringing him off the bench after 72 minutes (v Stoke), 73 minutes (Liverpool), 72 minutes (Coventry), 65 minutes (Norwich), 76 minutes (Fulham), 86 minutes (Tottenham), 67 minutes (Swansea), 73 minutes (West Ham), 71 minutes (Swansea), and 75 minutes (Reading).
Arsenal’s accounts department were stunned to receive an email from Southampton demanding payment for the appearances, with the south coast club justifying their argument based on stoppage time.
Eventually Arsenal agreed to pay for the appearances and the story worked its way around the offices at the Emirates with bafflement among staff.
They know Wenger calls the shots, but he is slow to move for targets."

    Interesting...

WTF there must be so much further going on behind the scenes at Arsenal to the extent I find it difficult to gauge the whole situation. Perhaps this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The biggest problem I seem to have is the way the club insults the fans intelligence. Claiming to have a war chest and then not spending a penny (or wasting it on second rate signings).

If I was a fan, I think I could accept the club being run like a business so long as the manager and the board didn't pretend otherwise and were transparent about it.
