The Scout Mission – Gameweek 7

A new regular, the Scout Mission offers a preview the forthcoming Gameweek by targeting the players, the teams and the selection issues that matter. This is what we’re watching out for, so you don’t have to.

Suarez vs Sturridge
The jury is out and will be watching keenly as Liverpool prepare for an Anfield meeting with Crystal Palace that will have Fantasy managers expecting heavy returns. While Brendan Rodgers’ side lack the creativity of Philippe Coutinho, his strike pairing are purring and potential Fantasy suitors will be watching on to assess just how the pair operate. The split of points between the two will go a long way to deciding transfer trends over the international break. We’ll also be watching out for the formation – Jose Enrique’s stock could be boosted further if Rodgers persists with three at the back.

The Newcastle Teamsheet
Alan Pardew’s half-time changes and post-match comments would indicate that we’ll see a changed starting XI for the visit to Cardiff. We’ll be looking to his teamsheet with interest, with Hatem Ben Arfa’s role, in particular, hotly anticipated. Hooked at half-time on Monday night, it could be that the Frenchman’s flair is sacrificed as Pardew looks to find the “balance” in his team. In contrast, Yohan Cabaye and Mike Williamson look certain starters.

The United Backlash
Just how will United react to back-to-back league defeats? How much will the journey to Shakhtar drain from their legs? Will David Moyes start with Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney in tandem at Sunderland? Moyes seems certain Rooney will recover from the shin complaint that forced him out in midweek.

The United situation is posing us Fantasy managers questions on a weekly basis. Despite erratic form and the concern that United are way short of their potential, we have to stay alert to the fact that the fixture list remains in their favour. A pair of Old Trafford encounters with Southampton and Stoke follow the trip to the Stadium of Light and we need to monitor their performance and form carefully with that in mind. Moyes’s choice of back four also needs monitoring – with Rafael and Phil Jones now available, we’ll be watching to see how the pecking order shapes up.

Amilfitano and Sessegnon
The pair were simply outstanding in the Old Trafford victory and could well emerge as realistic midfield candidates for the weeks ahead. The home meeting with Arsenal is perhaps the toughest of tests right now but, having risen to the occasion against United, we will be watching this pair with interest. Midfield looks to be the place to target differentials and the Baggies duo are shaping up nicely.

Wenger’s Midfield
The Gunners boss opted to rest Jack Wilshere for the Champions League victory over Napoli and, with Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky are back as options, it will be interesting to see how he shuffles the pack for the trip to the Hawthorns, though with Santi Cazorla still sidelined, Wilshere looks likely to return to the Gunners’ left.

Paulinho vs Eriksen
Christian Eriksen is the fashionable pick: a poised playmaker who exudes class and creativity. However, Paulinho’s ability to arrive in the box is not going unnoticed, nor is his propensity to fire in efforts on goal. It could be that, for all Eriksen’s craft and dead-ball involvement, Paulinho could emerge as the stronger candidate for our Tottenham coverage given the 1.2 FPL price difference. Saturday’s events at the Lane in the local derby with West Ham will tell us more.

The Hammers Rearguard
Sam Allardyce surprised a few by dropping James Collins to the bench for the trip to Hull, calling on James Tomkins to lineup alongside Winston Reid. Following a rather unfortunate defeat at the KC Stadium, it remains to be seen if Big Sam offers Collins a recall or sticks with Tomkins to disappoint the Welshman’s Fantasy owners. Remain on the bench and Razvan Rat could well be the most viable route into the West Ham defence once the fixtures improve.

Lukaku’s Fixture-Proof Status
While the Belgian tore a haphazard Newcastle apart in a 45-minute spell on Monday night, he’ll face a far more grueling test of his mettle at the Etihad. A duel with compatriot Vincent Kompany looks on the cards, with Fantasy managers lining up a move for the Chelsea loanee ahead of Everton’s Gameweek 8 home encounter with Hull. A 0.3 FPL price rise over the international break looks inevitable and that would only be assured by any kind of returns from Saturday’s clash.

Juan Mata’s Pitchtime
Impressive again in Bucharest on Tuesday, Fantasy managers will be looking out for his name on Jose’s teamsheet for the trip to Norwich, pondering whether the Spaniard could yet be a factor. Having dropped to 9.6 from an FPL starting price of 10.5, Mata could represent value if we can be convinced of form and security of start. It will also be interesting to see how Jose deals with Hazard’s possible return – Andre Schurrle thrived in his role on Tuesday. Meanwhile, John Terry has started every league game so far but was in action in Bucharest: we’ll be watching to see how Mourinho juggles Terry, Gary Cahill and David Luiz for the Carrow Road visit.

Swansea’s Potential
A trip to Southampton will be a stern test but, after an opening set of fixtures that made Michael Laudrup’s outfit more ugly ducklings than swans, they follow the weekend with a schedule that suggests strong returns at both ends of the pitch. We’ll be looking to see if both Ashley Williams and Pablo Hernandez can prove their fitness, whilst assessing whether Michu deserves to keep his top ranking status in our midfield watchlist.

Paul Lambert’s Tactics
The Villa boss continues to tinker with his formation as a result of injuries. Lambert has now moved from 4-3-3- to 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 in the last three matches, with the latter tactic utilised in last week’s win over City. Should he retain the same shape, Antonio Luna could arrive on Fantasy radars as on out of position prospect on the left of midfield.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have Rooney and RVP in my squad, tossing up as to who to captain. Strangely enough RVP could be a differential, but then common sense made me realise that my 3rd striker was Suarez, so I slapped the armband on him 😛

Previously, I posted a list of hat tricks & braces from last season (below the dotted line).

I wondered how many times a player scored 2 or more goals in 2 successive game weeks last year for an idea of the probability of it happening this season.

Bale - braces in weeks 26 & 27 (2 out of 3 times he had multiple goals)
Giroud - braces in weeks 19 & 20 (2 out of 3 times he had multiple goals)
Le Fondre - braces in weeks 23 & 24 (2 out of 3 times he had multiple goals)
Michu - braces in weeks 15 & 16 (2 out of 4 times he had multiple goals)
Rooney - braces in weeks 15 & 16 (2 out of 4 times he had multiple goals)(same as Michu, not a typo)
Suarez - braces in weeks 20 & 21(2 out of 5 times he had multiple goals)

Which players scored multiple goals (braces or hatties) at least 3 times, but never in succession?
Ba, Bentenke, Berbatov, Defoe, Lukaku, Van Persie

So, from a dozen players that scored multiple goals 3 or more times last year, half of them got back-to-back multiple goal games once during the season.

Not a great conclusion. Seems like it is a low probability event for a player to string together two games of multiple goals, yet the probability is still high enough to tantalize us into captaining a player in a week after they have already scored multiple goals once, in hopes to capture two in a row.

    ---------------------------
    Previous post:

    Hat tricks last season

Van Persie 2 (and 1 brace)
    Suarez 2 (and 3 braces)
    Gomez
    Cazorla (and 1 brace)
    Bale
    Walcott
    Kagawa
    Bentenke (and 2 braces)
    Sturridge (and 1 brace)
    Nolan
    Lukaku (and 2 braces)

Notable players with braces last season that didn't have a hat-trick
    Rooney - 4
    Berbatov - 3
    Dzeko - 2
    Giroud - 3
    Lampard - 2
    Michu - 4
    Mirallas -1

Your stats suggest the % chance of a repeat is greater then the chance of a brace or hat-trick after a single or no goal returns.

Haven't been able to find a website that aggregates assist data by week. The site I referenced does list assist totals. You could say The Hatable One owes The Fragile One a couple of nice assists this week. I can't be the only one anticipating Sturridge to have another injury over the international break that clears up by the end of it.

In fours years of playing fantasy football via the premier league site I am altogether so far finding this year to be one of the hardest years in terms of team selection, captain choices, scoring points etc just everything overall seems to have gone up a notch.
Anyone else finding this at all?

Completely agree - peversely this is a year when I have taken the most time over it and currently in the least successful position. I wonder if the top 10,000 has more casuals than you'd expect.

I would certainly have more points if I'd been more casual and tried to be less clever.

I agree...I think there are a few new trends that are taking the FFS community a while to adapt too.

Box to box midfielders are more prolific not just 'lucky'. The bonus favouring CBs as well. All of this comes as many of the top sides change managers so previous easy picks like Mata are now not nailed on.

Below is an aggregation of the penalty kicks conceded (PKC) by teams who have played in the PL over the past two seasons (Note a few options, e.g SOT, HUL & CAR therefore don't make it).

    AVL 15
    WBA 15
    NOR 14
    STO 14
    NEW 13
    ARS 10
    LIV 10
    FUL 9
    SUN 9
    SWA 8
    CHE 7
    EVE 6
    MCI 5
    TOT 4
    MUN 3

Why is this useful? Well, although I haven't taken into account penalties saved, if you look through this list and see a team that has reasonably high PKC and CS (e.g. LIV, ARS, NOR, STO) then you might potentially have identified a GK you could keep for the season without rotation and, therefore, save money to invest elsewhere.

It's a common frustration that we often miss out on points from penalty saves because the GK is on our bench - the main reason for this probably being that most penalties are conceded away from home or vs the 'big' teams. Identifying GKs that will keep CS AND concede penalties will offer the highest potential upside and, therefore, may negate the need for rotation.

If that GK happens to be a good shot-stopper and penalty-specialist (Reina, for example, would have been ideal) then you've probably struck FPL GK gold.

Based on this evidence? Mignolet and Scezney then possibly Begovic and Ruddy are probably the best non-rotated GK assets but it's worth noting that Boruc doesn't make the list because SOT have only played one in the past two season - he, imo, is THE prospect.

Having Tekkers out makes it so much easier. With him back in it sets up a whole new conundrum with the forward line. I still believe Giroud will be top scorer come january, a liverpool striker is a must, and Lukaku is simply a beast. Others would also chuck Rooney in there. Who's the best 3 when fit?

It's basically an impossible choice. Leaving RVP issue wholly to one side you have to choose from Rooney, Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud, Benteke, Soldado, Lukaku, Negredo, Aguero and plenty of others available such as Remy, Berbatov, Lambert, Eto'o, Campbell etc.

Now for me with strikers I'll always rule out those as substantial risk of rotation so out go Eto'o and Negredo.

The options are simply too good this year to stand still, to get a Campbell etc so I'd rule out anyone who is top drawer. That leaves:

Soldado: the only reason you should have him is if (like me) you have had him from the start and other injuries/hits have been too many to remove. Still have the fixtures on his side and watching him I do think he's likely to explode at some stage. Flawless penalty taker and an assist last weekend. For me not worth a hit to remove but obviously a definite 'no buy' at this stage.

Rooney: form is fine, albeit all from set plays but with medium term question marks over his role in the team, compatibility with RVP etc. Another hold assuming the injury clears up.

Aguero: the only City striker to consider he just hasn't delivered the returns for his price tag (or has done so too erratically) the past two seasons. I always leave well alone but primed for explosive returns in some games but then the home games against dross are most ripe for rest and rotation.

Giroud: Perfect start to the season. With Ozil there he is probably a must-have. You are going to regret it too much if you don't but the price rises mean it might be too late.

Sturridge: Was a must-have but Suarez' return complicates things. Personally I prefer LS, even for the higher price tag but to save money Sturridge is equally worthy really. A definite hold.

Lukaku: The Kone/Jelavic issues will disappear pretty pronto on these performances. Once City is out of the way he's a must have imo.

Benteke: The flat track bully until GW1. Inferior to Sturridge/Giroud considering no risk of rotation to those two but the injury means his price tag is that bit friendlier.

So to answer your question. On paper the perfect lineup is Giroud, Sturridge, Lukaku but just from a personal view if I was wildcarding I would go Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku.

Agree with most of that, thanks for the reply. The last 5 are the best ones imo. As good as rooney is from FKs he's not gonna score from them every week and aside from them he's not getting in great positions from what i've seen. I had him captained last week and consider myself lucky not to blank. Will probaby come down to fixtures again to pick from Suarez, Luke, Giroud and Tekkers

Personally think that with so many juicy options it might make most sense to save your transfers for other parts of the team. Moves from Giroud to Sturridge, etc, when all have great fixtures is sideways.
You can argue for Giroud, Sturridge, Lukaku, Tekkers, Suraez and Rooney at the moment imo. Most people have three of these players anyway, and with most having decent fixtures its a lottery, but all should score well.

Hands down Rooney, Suarez & Benteke.

There are arguments to be made against each of them individually.

As a trio though, their fixtures 'flow' incredibly well, as to offer us a clear cut captain's choice from now until the January WC...

With no 'heavy hitting' midfielders to speak of this season, this should not be overlooked.

My team is struggling with a combination of injuries, non-starters and poor performers:

    Boruc/Migs

    Koscielny/Coleman/Shaw/Ward/Collins

    Ben Arfa/Ozil/Ward-Prowse/Brady/Hernandez

    Giroud/Rooney/Soldado

Seriously considering taking a multiple point hit to try and fix the above (Brady + Collins out, possibly Ben Arfa too) after I took a 4 pointer last week (Ozil and Rooney in for RVP and Walcott). I’m also feeling insecure about the lack of Liverool coverage up front. I have £4m in the bank and already played my WC.

    Any thoughts?

Come on did you expect Naughton to start.

Teams with rotating backs don't get enough CSs AVB has learnt his lesson from last year.

got to love AVB, no one has a clearer A-squad and B-squad right now

wonder if Friedel is having a knock with Lloris playing

Walker playing because of defense injuries, still in A squad

Lamela still stranded on the B squad for some reason (would be nice if a reporter could ask about why the pricey boy is stuck on the B team)

Soldado, Gylfi, et al, still on the A-squad

Townsend is in the form of his life, and at his age, it is a bit of make or break, so imo it is really wise of AVB to keep playing Andros for now, to see how far he can go in this form, even though Lamela is a better player

    Guys i've starting X1 issues:

    Bench is, collins jwp redmond.

    Playing Barfa Dawson Zabaleta.

Do i need to think about a hit for jwp- paulinho as one of these three may not play?
    Thanks

      You see that?

Arsenal, Liverpool & Swansea are solid into the late teen weeks. I've got half an eye on now, and half an eye on the heavy Christmas schedule right before I taket my first WC in the January window.

Still setting up for now, but trying to think how I'll need to slowly reconfigure.
