Scout Scribbles – Coloccini Doubt for Magpies

Fabricio Coloccini is an early concern for Newcastle with a muscle problem. Christian Benteke has returned to training but will be rested by Belgium, Andros Townsend is a slight doubt for England duties, Jozy Altidore is confident of ending his Sunderland goal drought and Anthony Pilkington withdraws from the Republic of Ireland squad:

Coloccini Worry for Magpies

Fabricio Coloccini has given Alan Pardew cause for concern ahead of Newcastle’s home game with Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime. The Magpies skipper has been forced out of Argentina’s match with Uruguay later tonight due to a muscle injury and faces a race against time to be passed fit for the weekend showdown.

The Scout Says: Given that his side are set to face the red-hot partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, Pardew will be desperate for his skipper to recover in time. The Newcastle boss has clearly been unimpressed by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and subbed off the Frenchman for Mike Williamson in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton – Steven Taylor is believed to be edging closer to a comeback though it remains uncertain whether he’ll make it in time, handing the Tyneside team a real headache and perhaps boosting the armband prospects of both Suarez and Sturridge, given that Newcastle shipped three against Hull in their last match at St James’ Park.

Benteke Rested Out by Belgium

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has confirmed he won’t involve Christian Benteke for tonight’s clash against Wales. With his country having qualified for next year’s World Cup in Brazil after beating Croatia last Friday, Wilmots has ruled out the Villa forward and is expected to continue with Romelu Lukaku up top again.

“He trained for the first time in three weeks with the group on Friday but I won’t risk him.”

The Scout Says: Certainly, Benteke’s prospects of a quick domestic comeback have been boosted by a return to training for the national team. While Paul Lambert has yet to comment or assess his star forward, there’s no doubt a fully-fit Benteke would be immediately reinstalled to the Villa XI – all the more so after the midlanders’ failure to find the net away to Hull last time around. Home games against Spurs and Everton are far from straightforward but given that he’s already scored against Arsenal and Chelsea this season, Benteke – now down to 8.8 in FPL – has shown he’s more than capable of breaching any backline.

Pilkington Concern for Canaries

The Norwich midfielder has withdrawn from Republic of Ireland’s match against Kazakhstan this evening. Pilkington, an unused sub in his nation’s defeat in Germany last Friday, has been allowed to return to Carrow Road for treatment on an unspecified injury.

The Scout Says: Chris Hughton will be sweating on Pilkington’s fitness after a couple of impressive displays. Handed his first start of the season against Stoke in Gameweek 6 due to a injury to Nathan Redmond, the left winger supplied the assist for Jonny Howson’s winner at the Britannia and kept his place in spite of Redmond’s return to fitness last time round. Pilkington’s consolation strike in the 3-1 home defeat by Chelsea was one of the only positives for Hughton’s side and with 15 FPL points over his last couple of appearances, he could be a real differential to consider providing he proves his fitness, with games against Cardiff, West Ham, Newcastle and Palace in the next six.

Vydra Boost for Baggies

The West Brom on-loan forward has insisted he is ready to make his mark after a hamstring injury curtailed his early-season game time. Vydra has managed just 30 minutes in the league over the opening seven Gameweeks but has revealed he is finally free of injury:

“Now I feel in perfect shape. The leg doesn’t hurt and I’m ready. I played 60 minutes for the reserve team against Reading and even scored. Then another 45 minutes for the first team versus a youth side from Derby County. Everything was fine. I have been in training with the first team for quite some while already and endure the full burden without any problems.”

The Scout Says: Unfortunately for the Czech international, the influx of new arrivals has led to a change in formation which is likely to limit his first-team options. The introduction of Stephane Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano has seen Steve Clarke switch to the 4-2-3-1 system of last season, with the former sitting in “the hole” behind a lone forward – with the likes of Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe and Shane Long all vying for the central berth, Vydra may have to rely on appearances off the bench unless Clarke decides to switch system. Given that the Baggies have taken seven points from nine since Sessegnon and Amalfitano arrived, any alterations seem highly unlikely right now.

Altidore Confident Despite Drought

Sunderland’s summer signing revealed he is still full of self-belief in spite of a frustrating start to his career on Wearside.

“Any player is a product of the environment. If we’re playing good attacking football, you’re always going to have opportunities to score goals. I don’t change my mentality or the way I play. I feel like I’m playing well at Sunderland. We just have some bad luck right now, but I feel like I’m playing well and doing things right….If we can just focus on building a good team and try to leave the rest of the stuff out, it will be good for us. Hopefully the new manager can help us do that.”

The Scout Says: Yet to score in six league appearances, Altidore’s only strike for the Black Cats has come courtesy of the Capital One Cup against MK Dons. The big forward returned to scoring form for the US national team against Jamaica at the weekend, however, and with Steven Fletcher still stuck in the treatment room with a dislocated shoulder, Altidore will be tasked with grabbing the goals under new boss Gus Poyet as Sunderland ready themselves for a schedule which hands them a home derby with Newcastle and a trip to Hull in the next three Gameweeks.

Townsend Worry for England

Roy Hodgson has revealed Andros Townsend requires a fitness check ahead of England’s game with Poland tonight after the wide man picked up a problem in last week’s win over Montenegro.

“Andros took a slight knock on Friday so we will have to monitor that but we are hopeful he will be okay for Tuesday.”

The Scout Says: In spite of his showing for England last Friday, Townsend has been far from impressive domestically. While Hodgson’s prognosis suggests the winger is likely to be available, his first-team place at the Lane is coming under increasing threat with Aaron Lennon pushing for a return to fitness and Erik Lamela also in contention after a spate of sub appearances. Granted, his confidence will be sky-high after his goal against Montenegro but with just a single assist to his name over six league starts for Tottenham, there’d be no real surprise if Townsend made way over the next few weeks as Villas-Boas looks to rectify a run which has harvested just six goals in the opening seven Gameweeks.

I do think he is. But I think anyone who hasn't got him by now has massively missed the boat. I've never owned him and very much doubt I ever will this season.

I agree Silva will have an impact but not sure how much.

As the stats below show he is really not that attacking this year and is playing more as a traditional def midfielder compared to previous seasons.

Some Yaya stats from last season were:

43.1 mins per attempt and 66.1 mins per chance created

    This season:

51.2 mins per attempt and 74 mins per chance created.

If you take away set piece attempts (to see how attacking he has been from play) he has an attempt every 95mins this year compared to an attempt from play every 57mins last year. He only scored one of his 17 attempts from set plays last year so I think you can put his scores from set plays this year down to abnormal luck and the stats point to him being much less attacking this year than last year.

Different manager, different style, same player...but different roles from last season with Fernandinho in the team. Have you seen his free kicks? Whatever he's been practicing pre season - it's not luck.

Yeah, as an anxious non-owner of Yaya, I hope you're right. Even his most recent goal came off his knee which he knew very little about. But he was in the right position, and his free kicks haven't been luck imo. I've been holding out on him, and now seems too expensive....but it makes me nervous not having him

The free kicks are maybe not lucky but his conversion rate on dfk's is better than anyone's has ever been I reckon.

He has scored three dfk's so far when last year the record was 4 by Snodgrass and that was the most since season 2007-2008 when Ronaldo scored 4 dfk's. If Yaya scores one more dfk this season I'd say that will the height of it.

Yaya got 142 pts last season and with his less attacking role this year you would think that should equate to closer to 120pts this year. For me that is just not enough for 8.5m let alone whatever he has risen too now

I am not trying to discount his points from set pieces just trying to see how attacking he is from play this year compared to last year. As the stats show he is far less attacking this year than last year "from play"

Although I do not think he is that good at free kicks all of a sudden, I think it has a lot to do with good fortune as nobody else has managed more than 4 goals from dfk's in the last 6 years (I have not checked before this) and he has 3 already.

The biggest thing that bothers me about Yaya is how poor City have been in defence the last couple of games. If i was Pell' then the most obvious thing to do would be to stop Yaya being so cavalier going forward...not stop him bur reduce it a bit, especially with Silva back...I've no idea if he will but it's what i'd do.

Januzaj is a 2 - 3 game punt (if that) - he's only 18 and very slender, Moyes will need to protect him or his career will only last 3 seasons. If your looking for a rotation with Ravel look at Southamptons midfield, Lallana if you can afford it.

Erm, i guess it'd be better to have one non playing MF. My logic is simple, Even though a cheap quality MF like Morrison or Januzaj could rotate, it would really bite us when our rotation goes wrong (seeing all those points on the bench would hurt for sure). Consider Boruc, most people would have had Mignolet as their main keeper and Boruc as a stand in, But, with some of the unexpected clean sheets for the Saints stopper, we never know if our judgment would be right 😉 So, having too much quality will hurt IMO .I've gone for Januzaj btwn, I liked the way he played even before his brace, the guy is quality and am a Utd supporter, So, Januzaj's my option.

How do you reckon a Gus Poyet Sunderland team will play?

From what I remember, Brighton played some wonderful free-flowing football under Poyet - but had a bit of bite about them too.

        Here are my thoughts:
        - Hull aren't scoring much
        - Hull are doing well defensively, so there is better chance goals come from set pieces than from open play
        - There is high chance Baines is involved in each goal
        - If there is a CS, Baines will get bonus points

2 Newcastle, Cabaye amazing goal, Remy goal from sustained pressure.

If you're looking to keep beyond the next few games don't get Januzaj - got a feeling he might even not start against Southampton anyway, just due to all the hype around his performance last game and the England crap that Wilshere said Moyes might just bench him so there isn't another week of stories about him.

Well, he was playing on the left last week - I would have thought Welbeck is first choice there (Young and Giggs will get some games as well)

      Central role is Rooney obviously

That leaves the right where hs has a good chance of starting but with competition from Valencia and Nani

He can also play CM although I'm not sure he'll be risked there yet.

    afternoon dudes/dudettes
How does this wildcard team look please?

I have been tinkering and seems I might have boshed it.

    Migs/Boruc
    Terry, Coleman, Evra, Clyne, Faye
    Michu, Oscar, Paulinho, Ramsey, Morrison
    Lukaku, Sturridge, Giroud

I have enough funds to do Ramsey > Walcott when he comes back and Giroud > Benteke when he returns.

Only thing I am undecided is whether to go for Paulinho or Amalfitano.

    Thought would be appreciated

      Hello again 😀

Michu to Pablo H imo but loads of people seem to disagree with me so to them I say "whatever". If Pablo plays 75-90 mins week in week out I really do believe Michu will suffer and Pablo will be the best FPL player at Swansea (and I'm a big Michu fan!).

Apart from that I like the team and your planned transfers. imo Silva is going to be a big bandwagon in the next few weeks (check how good his average stats are this season) so maybe Michu + Paulinho to Pablo + Silva might be worth it.

        Hello Sir Brutus.

Hmm yea I see where your coming from, but Hernandez coming off a 7 game injury won't be getting 90 mins straight away. Michu is Swansea's main man mate. and if you go for Hernandez you may end up missing out on some big points. I had Silva at the start of the season and I never quite felt comfortable owning him.. his goal was a lucky re-bound header and although he is a class player I doubt his fantasy output compared to others at that price. Hell even yaya is a better choice!?

Thanks for the advice home dawgey dawg

Yeah that's the problem with Pablo. I have both him and Michu but will drop Michu for Walcott in all likeliness as soon as Pablo gets full fitness back.

I know Silva's goal was lucky in terms of his position but I think he'll get a few of those because of the position he'll take up on the pitch. I really do think he'll outscore Toure in terms of PPG across the season (maybe not overall since Yaya had an unfair headstart).

          No problem 🙂

I am sort of deciding between yaya/silva/oscar anyway.
Chelsea's fixtures are incredible but they just dont seem to be scoring many goals. City on the other hand, when they score they get 2+ most games.

Tough decision in wildcard. Do I go for Aguero or Yaya?

Aguero is a great differential and City score for fun at home.

However, if I have Kun then I can't have one of Lukaku or Benteke if I'm going to have Sturridge or Suarez as well as Aguero.

Yaya gives me strike force of Lukaku, Benteke and Liverpool striker.

      Decisions, decisions.

Aguero will give u a differential.... Do u want to be different 😉

Aguero will score points for U, but as u've said, u won't be able to have Luka, Benteke and Sua/Sturr.

Plus He's costlier than the others you're considering...
        yaya/Silva are cheap....

but, Strangely, they are also costlier than many other good midfielders.... dilemma dilemma

Still, with all the Strikers blasting it, you do have many options at the front....

I think there are a number of good reasons to stay away:

Limited pitch time - always a chance of being dropped for soft fixtures
            Poor upcoming fixtures
            Overpriced at £11.1
Most importantly, far better options at lower prices: Sturridge, Giroud, Benteke, Lukaku
