Scout Notes – Gameweek 17 – Monday

Gameweek 17 comes to an end with a goalless draw at the Emirates. Jose Mourinho shifts to a 4-3-3 to stifle Arsenal, as the hosts fail to score for only the second time this season:

Gunners Backline in the Points Again
While Arsene Wenger’s side failed to find the net last night, their defence continued a series of impressive performances at the Emirates. In a Gameweek that had harvested a single home clean sheet in the previous nine matches, Arsenal’s resilience came to the fore yet again as they collected a third shut-out in four in front of their own fans in a run that has seen them concede just once. Indeed, the Gunners have now racked up six clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks and, with West Ham, Newcastle, Cardiff and Villa in the next four, they could be poised for further returns at a time when most of their title rivals have failed to show the same level of defensive consistency.

Wenger’s Lack of Changes Increases Ozil Rest Fears
On Sunday afternoon, the Gunners boss had admitted he was considering the prospect of handing his record signing a slight rest over the festive period:

“In Germany, they have a break and we had this same situation with Jens Lehmann in his first season here. We have to give Mesut a break – but not tomorrow night. He has played a lot. But we have had a little break since we played last Saturday at Manchester City and, hopefully, he has recovered.”

It was intriguing, then, that Wenger failed to make a single substitution over the 90 minutes last night. Since arriving from Real Madrid, Ozil has started every league match and has missed just 10 minutes of the last 11 Gameweeks – with Santi Cazorla and fit-again Lukas Podolski both warming the bench last night, the Gunners boss has obvious options if he chooses to freshen up his side for back-to-back trips to West Ham and Newcastle over the next five days.

Mourinho Reverts to 4-3-3
It was perhaps telling that the Blues boss switched systems in order to frustrate the Gunners last night. Chelsea had managed a single clean sheet in their previous 11 league fixtures – back in Gameweek 12 at West Ham, where they also played with a 4-3-3 – and, despite having more efforts than their hosts, Mourinho’s decision to sub off Fernando Torres for David Luiz late on pretty much sums up his contentment with the point. Clearly, though, Chelsea are still very much in transition under the Special One – whilst a three-man central midfield affords his side extra stability, they remain far from resilient in a 4-2-3-1 system. Indeed, the previous three away games using this formation saw them concede a total of eight goals at Newcastle, Sunderland and Stoke.

Worryingly for Mourinho – and owners of Chelsea’s main Fantasy assets – his side have now travelled to five of the current top eight (Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle, Spurs and Man United) and scored just a single goal over those matches, back in Gameweek 6 away to Tottenham.

Hazard Looks Jose’s Only Attacking “Untouchable”
Regardless of formation, the Belgian seems to be the one attacking midfielder Mourinho simply cannot afford to do without. Last night’s change of tactics ended a run of four straight starts for Juan Mata – Chelsea scored 11 goals over that period and, while Hazard produced two goals and a pair of assists, the Spaniard was unconvincing and managed a single assist by comparison. Despite returning from injury, Oscar has now been handed two brief sub appearances in the last four and played just two sets of 90 minutes in the previous 10 Gameweeks. After just a couple of starts in the first 13 Gameweeks, Willian has now featured in the first XI in three of the last four – aside from Hazard, then, Mourinho’s multitude of midfield options continue to cancel each other out as the season unfolds, with the Blues boss still struggling to find the ideal combination.

    Budget midfield options

With the January wildcard almost upon us I thought it time to consider some fifth midfielder options (5.3m and below). These budget options should help us stock up on some premium options elsewhere in our teams.

Whittingham sits top of the FPL points charts with 67, not bad for a price of 5.2m, penalties and freekicks in his locker plus some great home ties coming up. But beware in January Cardiff’s fixture’s stiffen and the Welsh side face some tough away ties.

Barkley is next with 58 points and a price of 5.1m. He has a constant threat of rotation, but is proving great value each week, with three goals and two assists to his name already.

Sidwell is next in terms of total FPL in the sub 5.3m category with 56 points. Personally I’d avoid.

There are a number of other options in the Sidwell mould of defensive minded midfielders that have benefitted from the occasional goal and bonus such as N’Zonzi and Livermore.

But its way down in 19th in the FPL 5.3m and lower midfielder charts that I think the next good option appears – Januzaj. The threat of rotation continues to follow him around but while Nani is injured he looks great value in an attacking side all at the low price of 5m. Young remains a threat to his place.

Finally Sterling looks another great option, an attacking wing player in an attacking side.

Of these I think Whittingham remains the best option if the dullest. Yes his away fixtures are bad, but he is still capable of a goal in those and his home fixtures in January are superb. For those who like a bit more flair Sterling/Januzaj and Barkley are great options. Of all these I think Barkley remains the best as he looks to secure a World Cup team slot and will get more minutes Gameweek 21 onwards.

Which are you looking to keep/invest in? An other options you think I’ve missed in this budget midfielder category?

Sterling I would say after the next 2. Suarez will continue to plunder the goals and assists so others will benefit.

Worryingly I currently have whitts as my fourth mid and Morrison fifth.

Morrison to sterling after next 2 im thinking.

I am in the exactly same position, Whittingham and Ravel are my 2 budget mids. I don't think its that bad as they are both key to their teams and I can rotate them.

everyone is a bad tackle away from a red card, yes Ravel has a temper but he also can bring in some good points, and at such a low price he is a decent buy in my book.

I have Whitts and Januzaj....just as I want to dump one of them they pop up with a goal. I can realistically only have one though from January as I look to get the likes of Cabaye or Walcott in.

I'd look at Oviedo for Everton (4.5m) as well, been really promising (even if he is technically a defender) - very attacking and involved a lot, was unlucky to get an own goal this week but it happens. If he can keep his spot he'll be in the points regularly.

When Baines is back (boxing day according to reports) that is the end of Oviedo, I'm afraid. Also while a midfielder he plays left back, but gets no defender points.

It'll be interesting to see if Baines jumps right back in, Oviedo has done well in his spot and Everton aren't under Moyes any more - he might even get a different role in the squad as all the commentary I've heard (not seen many of the highlights recently) has him involved in much of the attack play.

Long time Januzaj owner here. I was all set to ditch and then Moyes kept playing him and he kept looking really sharp. Lots of assist potential there. The threat of Young is strong though.

Strange hulk given the sudden surge in expensive midfield talent. Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Ozil, Ramsey, ?Lamela?

Januzaj in looks outstanding but will be never be guaranteed gametime at his ripe young age. Barkley is a great player, but not an FPL player imo.

I guess. I just thought people were inheriting large amounts of cash from the Aguero disappearance, and the general consensus was that big defenders are bad. That's at least what FFS has indicated in articles over the past week or so. Budget defences doing the business.

Perhaps a name thats not been suggested and one that has fallen out of favour within the FF community is Sigurdsson. Now played a full 90 minutes in his last two matches under Sherwood. Tottenham are now primed to score goals and we all know Sigurdsson can score! At £6.4 Million, I would consider him a great option.

I'll be having some of that, thank you very much!

JWP is fine for me at 4.2 and
i can have a balanced squad with 3heavy mids and ramsey

      And decent attack

Livermore at 4.5 looked very attacking and was enjoying his footy on the weekend.

I'd also throw Bentaleb of Spurs in there, he had 0 owners before he made his debut appearance for Sherwood, if he likes the lad a spurs mid at 4.5 could be a bargain.

      mignolet vorm
coleman dawson turner zabaleta (inj) faye (deadweight)
      hazard fer cabaye bannan shelvey
      rooney lukaku suarez

      option (a)
      shelvey > walcott
vorm > mannone or zabaleta > debuchy/williamson/jonny evans

vorm is out, and cheapest keeper after the walcott switch is mannone
however he is away to eve this week (mignolet away to mci)...but sun has good fixtures coming up

I just don't understand why people think this (you arent the only one I have seen post this)

Why would he get himself purposely booked when the only other match after that he can get suspended for is the Swansea game? The ban is lifted after the Palace game so even if he is rested, he's better off available and on the bench rather than suspended.

      Makes no sense at all.

No, they can just rest him. The deliberate bookings are to get the player off the tightrope when there are several games left before the threshold for yellows increases.

Those transfers look great mate! I'd go Gibbs over Koscielny seeing as Wenger doesn't like to rush his players back from injury... I've got no funds so was looking at doing Terry & Ramsey > Martin Olsson & Walcott for a hit before the price changes then Luna > Evans/Debuchy next week.
