Scouting Switzerland

Ranked 8th in the FIFA rankings, Switzerland qualified for Brazil among the first seeds, avoiding the most powerful, big sides, with only France as a big name in their Group, which they also share with Ecuador and Honduras. They were unbeaten in the UEFA qualifying group with seven wins and three draws, notching 17 goals for and just six goals against.

Likely line up

———————— Benaglio ————————-
Lichsteiner —- Schär —- Bergen —- Rodríguez
———- Behrami —– Xhaka —– Inler ————

Shaqiri —————– Drmić ————— Stocker

Ones to watch

Lichsteiner – A fans’ favorite from Italian Champions Juventus, the 30-year-old right-back has nine goals and 12 assists for the Old Lady since he joined from Lazio. With 60 caps and four goals for Switzerland he’s one of their most experienced players and will provide great runs from deep in the right flank.

Shaqiri – Speed and ability personified, unfortunately lacks playing time for Bayern because of the likes of Robben, Ribery, Muller and Gotze. The 22-year-old only got 90 minutes two times this season, but with a total of 17 appearances in the Bundesliga, most of which were short cameos, he still managed to score six goals and to create 25 chances. He’ll be the Switzerland star of the tournament.

Young prospect

Not a matter of age but a matter of experience since most of the squad are in their early 20’s, both Schär and Drmić together share only 10 caps.

Schär – 22 years old with only five caps and already with three goals, this centre-back offers plenty of aerial threat. Will not remain at Basel for much longer.

Drmić – Unable to save Nurnberg from relegation this striker still got 17 goals and created 34 chances in Bundesliga. Only 21, has has just signed a five year deal with Bayer Leverkusen. For Switzerland he has  five caps and has scored two goals.

    ranked 8th really surprised me.
something i noticed the other day, rodriguez is ranked 5th in whoscored's best players in europes' top 5 leagues last season. not bad being in a top 5 with messi, suarez, ronaldo and ribery, even if it's purely statisticly.

I know it is surprising isn't it...I guess they have a good track record recently. Have always been a tough side....could have some gems there, especially in defence.

The ranking system is a bit of a joke though. Read this, sad that playing in money-grabbing friendlies across the globe trumps having the best possible chance of doing well at the WC.

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25134584

Switzerland's high rank is due to an easy qualifying group (gained from luck/previous high rank) and a few wins against top sides in friendlies playing experimental/international-injury ridden sides).

Fair play to them for playing the system better than the others though.

One of those young talents that many big clubs will be watching during the World Cup.

Ricardo is a great crosser, and on some set pieces. Germany's Baines. Not sure about their defence as a whole mind you.

Shaqiri is listed as a midfielder in the game i'm playing. Does that make him a great Oops prospect or still quite mediocre?

depends on the alternatives. fpl wise shaqiri would be a mid seemingly. depends if the hazards, neymars, sterlings etc are mids too. could be some tricky decisions for game creators as taking belgium for example their manager listed januzaj, hazard and mertens as forwards

Cheers AB, spot on there. Some like Hazard (11.5) are midfielders whereas Neymar is the most expensive striker with Messi (15mil). It's all relative and will add an extra dimension I guess, so much to consider! 🙂

In the last two years they've won like two or three penalties only. Two converted by Inler and one by Dzemali.
But the teams is very young so there are new faces in the NT so nothing is granted.

    Schar is ESSENTIAL.

Simple as. Huge attack threat, will probably be 5.0, fairly decent group for the Swiss for Schar to grab points in.

First name on my WC team

Love these things. Thanks for the info, great stuff. Quick question. Should the Sahq attack move on? Really good player and If i remember Bayern got him quite cheap, but is he likely to ever really feature?

He will only leave Bayern if he is going to somewhere with granted playtime, Pep's rotation still gets him some playtime as he is considered the impact substitute for Pep's tactics. If it's a waste? Of course it's is, but if there are one team in the world that have the luxury to have such a class player on bench it's of course Bayern. Both Robben and Ribery have contract until 2017 but with 30yo and 31 respectively it's a matter of time until Shaqiri steps up.
In Premier League he would fit perfectly in almost every top team. The rumours talk about the interest of Brandon Rodgers in him would be perfect for the left wing as Moses and Iaspas are crap and Henderson is not a player to have on the wing.

    Latest draft (TFF)

    Akinfeev
    Luiz Alba Rodriguez* Von Bergen*
    Muller Rakitic Pjanic
    Neymar Sanchez Drmic*

    1.4 bank

    * All from Switzerland, who I have identified as a good source of uber cheap player from a team with a realistic chance of getting results / qualifying from their group.

Sanchez to be rotated with other expensive forwards, targeting possible hauls each day.

Thanks for your feedback so far. Any comments?
