After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders over the last few days, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List moves further up the park. This time around, we assess the cut-price midfield options for the upcoming season:

At first impression, there seems to be few genuine contenders in the 4.5 – 5.0 midfield price range. As pre-season friendlies progress, though, we should gradually be afforded a better idea as to how teams are shaping up – whilst the pickings are presently slim, with few standout attacking options currently available, there are, nonetheless, a few cheap rotation pairings on offer:

Coming in at 5.0, Villa duo Fabian Delph and Ashley Westwood both served notice of their eye for goal by finding the net on three occasions last term. Granted, that’s hardly prolific form but if they can kick on from last season’s exploits, they may offer us a viable cut-price option in the centre of the park. Paul Lambert’s side rotate home/away perfectly with West Brom and with Graham Dorrans also setting you back 5.0 for the Baggies, the midlands clubs may come into consideration if they can improve upon last term’s disappointing form.

For Burnley, Michael Kightly (five goals and six assists) and Scott Arfield (eight strikes and a trio of assists) seem the standout options at 5.0 apiece, though with highly-rated right-back Kieran Trippier at the same price, many may overlook The Clarets in the centre of the park. As mentioned in our rotation article, Sean Dyche’s side alternate home/away with Hull over the entire 38 Gameweeks but whilst Tigers duo Robbie Brady and Ahmed Elmohamady also set you back 5.0, the arrival of Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince is likely to see our attentions focussed on the mid-price bracket for Steve Bruce’ charges.

Elsewhere amongst the promoted sides, Leicester new boy Marc Albrighton has already found his way into a number of Fantasy squads after being priced at 4.5. A peripheral figure at former club Villa, the wide man’s delivery could be key to The Foxes’ chances in the final third and, with few options at that price currently catching the eye, he could become an increasingly popular pick if he nails down a role on the flank for Nigel Pearson’s Championship winners. Winter signing Riyad Mahrez chipped in with three goals and five assists in just 19 appearances in the Championship last term – at 5.0, he’s costlier than Albrighton and will need to be monitored over the upcoming friendlies.

As mentioned previously, Southampton dovetail perfectly with The Foxes over the 38 Gameweeks and could present us with a couple of legitimate options. Analysis of the Player Price List shows that Steven Davis is the only current budget midfielder to have exceeded 100 points in the campaign gone by. The 5.0-priced man served up two goals and seven assists over 34 appearances for the St Mary’s outfit but it’s yet to be seen whether he’ll retain his starting berth under new boss Ronald Koeman – many are hoping the Dutchman hands the similarly-priced James Ward-Prowse a chance to nail down a spot in his XI after the youngster started 16 times in 2013/14.

Liverpool’s Oussama Assaidi comes in at 5.0. The winger’s chances of breaking into the Reds’ first-team look slim-to-none but with Mark Hughes still keen after a relatively successful loan spell at Stoke last season, a move to the Britannia could bring Assaidi into consideration ahead of a schedule which pits the Potters against just three of last term’s top eight in the first 12 Gameweeks. Swansea alternate with Hughes’ side over the entire season and if Ki Sung-yeung (5.0) can nail down a starting berth upon his return to the Liberty, pairing him and Assaidi may yet be an option. Stoke’s Stephen Ireland also sets you back just 5.0 and started seven of the last eight games he was available for last season – there’s question marks as to whether he can retain the role in “the hole” as Hughes strengthens in his second season at the helm, though.

Newcastle’s new boy Jack Colback may be one to consider. Despite moving to St James’ Park from neighbours Sunderland, the 5.0 midfielder remains under the radar due to the arrival of Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella but, with three goals and a trio of assists in 28 starts for the Black Cats last term, Colback may be a solid, if somewhat unspectacular, option amongst Alan Pardew’s first XI.

Unsurprisingly, QPR’s main options are placed in the budget bracket after the club scored just 60 times in 46 league matches in the Championship. David Hoilett was the most prolific R’s midfielder last time around with four goals and five assists over 38 appearances and, like Joey Barton (three goals, three assists) comes in at 5.0 – both offer plenty of top-flight experience which suggests they could continue in the starting XI for next term, though with Harry Redknapp expected to strengthen, none of the current crop really stand out.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino is expected to shake up the Tottenham midfield. Both Tom Carroll and Nabil Bentaleb are available for just 4.5, though it’s far from certain that either will be in the South American’s first-team plans, given the number of midfielders at his disposal. Nonetheless, Pochettino showed at Southampton last year that he’s not afraid to hand youth a chance and there remains a hope that one, or both, could potentially be on the cusp of a breakout season ahead for the north London outfit.

If Wisdom goes to WBA and Vlaar goes to SOU, this would surely revive the 'uber' strategy in defence? You'd be able to get a thoroughly decent back 7 for 31m leaving you an average 8.6 to spend per player in MID and FWD positions.

It's usually rare for the top teams to keep CSs early doors anyway so you may as well invest that premium in attacking positions.

I feel like I've been burned by the uber strategy before so I'm reluctant to try it again but, at the same time, one of the major factors of this game is identifying where the value exists so you can get the most points per million spent. Right now, it seems the value lies very much in DEF.

I think irrespective of whether it works there should be some gain money wise from it... when the casuals make those first few transfers before they go MIA hopefully they see that they are playing and bring them in.

Good post. Vlaar at Southampton would definitely interest me. Can't see West Brom keeping clean sheets, so I'm reluctant to get him, even if it means saving 0.5

Pity that Southampton don't seem to rotate with Crystal Palace, as I've currently got Chambers, (+Vlaar?), Mariappa and Ward.

    Latest Draft:

    Mannone - (Krul)
    Shaw - Vlaar - Chester - (Marriappa - Wisdom)
    Sanchez - Silva - Fabregas - Eriksen - (Albrighton)
    Rooney - Dzeko - Pelle

    0.0 left.

I am thinking maybe the def is too light on - maybe lose Pelle for Jelavic and spend the extra 1.5 mil in def?

You don't see Evra as being serious competition for Shaw at all, no?

I can't get over that Shaw is the most popular picked defender in the game at the moment.

He wasn't even originally a Van Gaal signing... Van Gaal just gave the go ahead after the deal was well progressed.

I can see Shaw having to earn that berth from Evra first.

Spain had a dreadful world cup as a whole so that defeats your argument to bring Silva in, There will be zero knock on effect of that campaign if anything it will benefit them for the campaign ahead as they will have had a longer rest and be fresh to start pre season.

For those of you going with two goalkeepers from the same club (e.g. Krul and Elliot), is it wise to put Elliot in your starting squad, with Krul on the bench?

Apart from the smugness of having a potential 6 points to come off the bench after Monday night's fixture has completed, I actually think there could be a benefit.

Why would Elliot ever be substituted on during a match? It's either because Krul has been injured or sent off. (Di Canio no longer in Premier League management so we don't need to include poor performance as a factor)

There were 4 red cards among goalkeepers last year. Not a high number, but there's a 1 in 5 chance it'll happen to your goalkeeper (McGregor actually got sent off twice so the stat isn't quite correct but whatever. The other two were Vorm and Howard).

2 of the 4 red cards resulted in penalties. So imagine your goalkeeper being sent off, then your substitute goalkeeper making a penalty save. I know which order I'd rather have my goalkeepers in my FPL team. (Both penalties were scored last season by the way)

Now for the goalkeepers going off injured. There's a 66% chance that the goalkeeper will have played less than 60 minutes, meaning even if he's kept a clean sheet, he won't be getting the points for it. There's a 33% chance that the goalkeeper will have played less than 30 minutes, meaning that the substitute goalkeeper still has a chance of a clean sheet.

I can't find any statistics on how many goalkeepers went off injured. Looking at minutes played and spotting odd numbers, here's my best guess:

Alan McGregor (injured vs West Ham and received a simultaneous red card, so he falls under both these categories) - injured after 23 minutes, hadn't conceded a goal (would have scored 1 point, but scored -2 as he was sent off. Replacement Harper played 60+ mins, conceded 2 goals).

Ben Foster - injured after 78 mins vs West Brom. Score was 0-0 and stayed 0-0, so he'll have kept his clean sheet points and you'd be kicking yourself in this instance.

Artur Boruc - injured after 58 minutes vs Chelsea. Had conceded one goal at this time. Gazzaniga conceded 2 in 22 minutes, so Boruc would have been a point better off.

Keiren Westwood - injured after 44 minutes vs Hull, they were 1-0 down at the time. Mannone came on and the score stayed 1-0, so no real difference in their points.

Anyway... something that is unlikely to make any difference over the season, but imagine your disgust when Krul is sent off after 10 minutes, Elliot saves a penalty and keeps a clean sheet.

    Schmeichel/Boruc (rotate)
    Cahil/Debuchy then Cameron/Ward/Collocini for rotations
Silva/Mata/Hazard then Davis and Shelvey for rotation
    Sturridge/Giroud/Ings

Trying to get attacking coverage from all the title challengers and decent rotation on the budget side.

Have been considering Pelle and Austin. Koeman seems to get the best out of Pelle and Rodriguez is out for a while so game time guaranteed. Austin managed most shot per game at home in thr Championship.

thos is what I am on atm but no doubt it wont stay like this. I am trying to cover fixtures and considering the transfers that are being touted atm.

That's exactly it to be honest, waiting until bigger teams get more defensively sound/options emerge. Until then I'll go cheap (I always do 😉 )

Yeah that looks pretty decent to me, disappointing if Chelsea don't kick off solid and Verm doesn't move but aside from that it's strong.

cheers, looking at the points breakdowns for the top 4 in each bracket, ie. defs, mids and forwards. the way you are doing it makes more sense but I think looking at the early fixtures some of the defenders could score really well early on this year. Chelsea took a long time to get their shit together defensively for Jose last year but when they did, they were very good.

Danny Simpson was another I had pencilled in so he's always an option (replaced him with Wisdom).

Overall though that looks a fine set up, I'm trying to set it up to avoid the Wildcard, approaching it differently to last season when I WC'd early.

Saw Winston Reid, got excited - thought he must be cheap.

At 5.0 I'd rather have Palace, Tottenham or Curtis Davies.

He is. A fit Terry is a guaranteed starter. Don't know why the consensus is to pick Cahill over him. People are over-thinking

I am not planning on any City until week 6, mainly cos of fixtures and not sure on who to take from Aguero/Yaya/Silva/Nasri.

For now it is double on Utd or Chelsea attack is my decision with Rooney or Costa
