Romelu Lukaku is struggling to recover from a toe problem in time for Everton’s trip to The Hawthorns. David Silva talks down fellow Spain international Diego Costa’s hamstring problem, Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez impresses for Algeria, while the injuries mount for West Brom as Youssouf Mulumbu picks up a hamstring injury.

Lukaku Concern for Toffees

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed his record signing faces a race against time to be fit in time for next weekend’s trip to West Brom. Lukaku has pulled out of international duties with Belgium due to an ongoing toe problem and, speaking to the club’s official website, Martinez admitted:

“We’ll have to assess him on Monday and Tuesday to see how fit he is because there is a big question mark over Rom being fully fit for the weekend. Obviously Rom has been struggling with that toe and he’s done magnificently to be on the pitch and helping us on a matchday. But this week, it’s been important for us to give him a specific treatment to work on that [toe] and make sure that his recovery time has been exactly what he’s needed. We’ve got a great relationship with the Belgian FA and it’s been great to be able to work together. We hope that Rom can benefit from that.”

The Scout Says: With just an assist to his name in the first three Gameweeks, Lukaku has clearly struggled to regain the form that served up 15 goals and nine assists during his loan stint at Goodison last time around. Given that his side face seven days in 22 days from next weekend onwards, Martinez will be reluctant to risk the big Belgian and with Samuel Eto’o on board, can afford to court caution with Lukaku’s fitness. A possible spell on the sidelines would certainly be good news for Steven Naismith’s growing band of Fantasy owners – many feel the Scot’s pitch time will be curtailed by Eto’o’s arrival but his chances of retaining the support role will surely take a turn for the better if Lukaku needs more time to recuperate.

Injuries Mount for Baggies

West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu lasted just 21 minutes of Congo’s defeat to Cameroon yesterday before limping off with a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: With Ben Foster and Graham Dorrans also pulling out of international duty through injury in the last few days, Alan Irvine doesn’t have his problems to seek right now. A potential absence for Mulumbu could allow James Morrison his first start of the season – the Scot recovered from injury to climb off the bench in the Gameweek 3 loss at Swansea – though Irvine could also turn to 4.0-priced defender Chris Baird as an alternative; the summer signing was fielded in the centre of the park during pre-season but has failed to feature for the midlands outfit in the league so far.

Silva Plays Down Costa Fears

The City playmaker raised the hopes of Diego Costa’s Fantasy owners yesterday. Speaking to the press ahead of Spain’s upcoming clash against Macedonia, Silva – who has a history of hamstring injuries himself – seemed confident that the Chelsea striker’s problem is merely a minor one.

“I saw Costa was doing well and I talked to him. The injury is nothing serious.”

The Scout Says: The news, whilst far from an official prognosis, raises optimism of a swift return to action for the Blues in-form frontman. Costa has already withdrawn from tomorrow’s squad with the problem but, as we saw last week at Everton, his powers of recovery seem to be rapid. Having started all but four of Atletico’s 38 league matches last term, there’s growing hope he’ll be raring to go in time for next Saturday’s home clash with Swansea – with 36% of the votes cast in this week’s Captain Poll, he’s been heavily backed to replicate the form which has seen him score in all three league appearances so far.

Mahrez Helps Algeria to Victory

The Leicester wide man played a key part in his nation’s 2-0 win over Ethiopia yesterday. Mahrez provided an assist for Porto’s Yacine Brahimi to help secure the points for Christian Gourcuff’s side.

The Scout Says: Mahrez’ burgeoning form could well be set to keep budget favourite Marc Albrighton on The Foxes bench when the domestic action resumes next weekend. The Algerian has started all three league matches on the right flank, with pre-season favourite Albrighton reduced to a couple of sub appearances so far. Available for 5.0, Mahrez has Stoke, Palace and Burnley in the next four as Nigel Pearson’s side look to build on the form that has earned points against Everton and Arsenal in the first trio of fixtures. If Jeffrey Schlupp can continue on the opposite flank, though, he looks an intriguing out of position option – priced at 4.5 and classified as a defender, he’s started the last two on the left and provided the assist for Leonardo Ulloa’s equaliser against the Gunners last time around.

Jovetic Injury Reports Remain Scarce

According to Twitter rumour and some limited sources, Man City’s Stevan Jovetic suffered a hamstring injury in training on Friday, ahead of Montenegro’s European Championship Qualifier with Moldova. It’s suggested that he will sit out Monday’s encounter as a precaution.

The Scout Says: While we would rarely give such a “story” any coverage, in a period awash with phantom injuries, it’s worthwhile sifting fact from rumour. Right now, there seems little need for Jovetic owners to panic, particularly when there are very few sources confirming the news, with much of the noise restricted to Twitter. As yet, there’s no suggestion of a withdrawal from the Montenegro squad or further confirmation that Jovetic will indeed sit out Monday’s game. The striker has, however, been cursed by hamstring problems in the past so, should he play no part against Moldova, Fantasy managers will wait keenly on reports from the Etihad ahead of City’s trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 4.

Arsenal conspiracy theorists on twitter/blogs are saying Gazidis went over Wengers head to sign Welbeck, which is why AW hasn't said anything about the new signing yet.

      Makes sense tbh.

I can't see in a million years how Wenger would rate a player as obviously mediocre as Welbz

          lol good point Litt 😉

He's spunked £16m on Welbz though. It's just so un-Wenger-like.

I really can't see how he rates him. If he did, he could have got him cheaper last transfer window

16m is good value IMO. He's 23 and English. If it doesn't work out, he'll easily recoup most of that transfer fee.

9 goals in the league last season having played 1462 minutes. That is a goal every 2 games. If he's given a run upfront, i think he'll do well.

Welbeck? It's a good signing. He's no worse than Giroud. A front three of Sanchez, Welbeck and Walcott with Ozil behind looks excellent. It's upto Wenger to play them all at the same time, which is unlikely.

It's a last option, mediocre signing. United have played a blinder to get £16m for him. Giroud, however much of a lamppost, will score more goals than Welbeck.

Disagree. Welbeck is more mobile, if given the chance to play upfront, i think he'll score a similar amount, if not more, than Giroud.

Time shall tell, at the minute Welbeck is a great presser but Giroud is the better goal getter.

Welbz doesn't know how to press intelligently.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Given price changes are less frequent this season should FPL consider abandoning this part of the game altogether? If not how would you like to see the game's financial market altered to ensure it is as relevant as it has been in previous seasons?

Agree. Having a major game mechanic hidden is not good design.

It should be front and centre, if you want this player then he will cost more tomorrow than today, so make your choice of risk/reward.

It may be slower, but the slower rise in players also coincides with a slower rise in team value, so in a way it means the currency itself is stronger. A pound goes further than before, but our banks have less money.

I think the percentages used for rises or falls should be linked to the number of dead teams, which could be estimated by the rate of decline of overall transfers throughout the season.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

It is, or at least has been on recent seasons. As time goes on, the number of transfers required rises initially, peaks at around GW8 or 9, then slowly decreases until the end of the season. So when there are more inactive teams, less transfers are required for a change.

Every Wednesday night there's a price change according to ownership rise/fall. Once a week, less confusing and more clear.

I agree with price change once a week but it should be immediately after the GW deadline on Saturday or midnight on Friday. All week's transfers contributing to the rise which means no wasted daily transfers for players over 100% and possibility to transfer players in/out once we have some understanding who is fit to play.

FPL should just show it as part of their own site, just as TOYALFPL, and view it as part of the game. I have no idea why they wouldn't want to. It would increase traffic enormously on their site with far more folk logging on daily.

In terms of the mechanics of the thing the past two seasons have been spot on...Playing the TV offered two ways of playing...Early build up of TV or a more patient approach with the balance fairly well set between the two approaches...

I have no idea why they wanted to change it and no idea why they don't make it public.

Serious question here Wakey - I have read in the past that you hate template teams. Don't you think that having open access for everyone to a resource that tells you which transfers to make and when to make them would actually create more activity towards a template team? I think it would.

What I mean is I think we may be over-estimating the number of people that have either the interest, will, or time to make use of the information. It takes a particular kind of dedication, and I don't think that many would bother.

It's a fair point, and very hard to quantify. I think it's fair to say that if the information was available on the FPL site that more people would bother than they do now, though - it definitely won't be less - so it won't help in that regard.

For sure more would use it. I just don't think there will be many that are as dedicated/sad as most on here 🙂

With info available to all, it would be akin to legalising drugs in sports. I think I would still beat most of my mini-league rivals even if they had access to the info that I do. Would be good to put this theory to the test, though, so I am all for it.

Not sure I like your analogy, as it equates us both (and all FFS users) to drug cheats...

But I'm not completely against the idea. One thing that puts me off is that people regularly get stung by the price-sites inaccuracy, especially when a player rises in the 90s and few expect it. If FPL did publish the information there would be no margin for error and you would lose this element.

No I think price changes help make the game more interesting. I think FPL can capitalise on this by being transparent about price changes and displaying it on the FPL site. FPL should see this as an economic win for them too as it will encourage the casual player to be more observant with their team during the week bringing more traffic to the site.

I completely agree with Ryan in a sense that price changes add a whole dynamic which can only be good to the game. However, I have to disagree with the second point.

Fantasy managers, in my personal opinion, are never supposed to know the exact timing of price changes. Similar to how a stock market operates, yes an investor may be able to analyze and thus make a calculated prediction on the future movement of a certain stock. But in the end, there will always be that 'uncertainty' factor that remains in the market itself. Having said that, I can see where people's complaints have been coming from as I too have already been burned by this new price movements 😉

The problem here however is that Fiso and Total exist to crack the code. This gives an unfair advantage to us serious managers. At the moment there is a new and interesting dynamic in that these price change sites are unreliable. I'm yet to have an informed opinion as to whether this is good or bad in terms of the mechanics of the game.

In terms of game enjoyment however, knowing price changes adds a richness to the FPL experience. Do we kneejerk early to catch the price changes? Do we deliberately forfeit 0.1 or 0.2 to wait for more information? It gives us decisions to make throughout the week.

I agree that the existence of Fiso and Total has provided 'serious' managers an unfair edge over more casual players. That's probably why I'm kinda enjoying the current situation, where these websites have not been as accurate this time around thus leveling the playing field.

I guess my point was that, you don't need to know the exact timing of price changes to experience that game enjoyment you mentioned. Right now for instance, we still have to make those decisions. We still have to decide whether to make an early transfer or risk losing potential rises in exchange for some information. The only difference being, we don't know the exact moment when player prices will move this time around

Why shouldn't serious managers have an edge? After all they put more time into it. Anybody can find fiso or totalfpl if they do a bit of searching. A serious player is just a casual who puts more effort in.

I totally agree with you. If price changes are gonna be a part of the game, the change formula should be hidden. Why? It makes the game more unpredictable. Now, if you're obsessed with team value, you have to take the risk and make transfers early in the week.

Last season, I could easily figure out which player my opponents had bought, just by looking at their changes in team value, time of transfer and TotalFPL. Now, things got a bit mixed up. Salad style

Total and Fiso are in the dark when it comes to price changes. They simply don't have the required info which they had in the past to make accurate predictions. FPL took some crucial information away.

Also I would argue that those 3rd party sites add an unfair advantage to the serious FPL manager. I believe a level playing field can be achieved by displaying the changes on the main site. It will also encourage people to be engaged in the FPL market and not just picking last weeks point scorers.

I agree completely. The only reason i am concerned at the minute is that i have the exact money now to change Jovetic to Balotelli but i am worried that Jovetic could drop in price but also worried about picking up an injury elsewhere from internationals.. This is where accurate prices changes are essential i believe

Agree completely to the unfair advantage. Selfishly, that's why I like it cloak-and-dagger as it is now.

But I don't think FISO et al are lacking in information - at least they are not admitting to it if they are. The data has moved (as it does each season) but I think they have access to it. I just think they haven't cracked the new algorithm yet. And it's very difficult to do it this week when so many wildcards are being used.

If when we play our WC, we didn't press the WC button until just before the next deadline, it would make it quite interesting. We could essentially make the transfers during the WC count.

There would also be an increase in managers who failed to press their wildcard button in time and therefore incurred large penalties.

Then they would come on here to complain about how unfair it was.

The FF dream for me would be:

At the end of transfer window the number of each player currently selected is locked. Therefore if you want Costa in your team as a transfer later on in the season someone must be willing to sell him from their squad.

A Betfair system is then in place to enable individuals to sell their players to each other

Last year I did my best to avoid looking at price rises and not chase team value. Ended up 350th overall! There maybe other factors in that such as Suarez no Brainer captaincy but I feel it freed me up from following the herd and choosing players I didn't want just to gain TV. For instance every time a defender scored they would rise.

Also haven't players been dropping more quickly or the same as last year. Need to be careful not to lose value this year...

        Yes abandon price changes.

Hate being forced into an early transfer before seeing your new signing crocked on international duty.

High team value gives the top managers too big an advantage later in the season. If you have a bad start you shouldn't spend the rest of the season paying for it

I've been talking to my mini league rival plenty of times over the last few years, since he's very much against the price change system overall.

His argument is that it rewards bandwagoners too much and creates strong template teams for large parts of the season.

I'll make an example. We're playing this season but with the price system of last year. Siggy has scored 18 points in two weeks but you don't believe he will keep it up. You have lined up another player for the same price that should do better. What do you do and how will the option you choose affect your team depending on how well he does for the upcoming weeks?

        A) You buy Siggy and he keeps up the scoring. Great. You won the jackpot. You collect the points and the price changes. Almost regardless of how well your differential did you will be better off this way.

        B) You buy Siggy and he fails. You don't get a whole lot of points but you pocket 0.6m value for following the herd. If your alternative pick did great you would have been better off with him, but the prices soften the blow a lot.

        C) You buy your alternative option instead. He doesn't score. Now here is where it gets ugly. Not only do you not get any points, and you shouldn't because you made a bad pick, but you're also left behind badly in team value. Even if your option outscore Siggy by a little bit you might well be losing further team value over the upcoming weeks. Disaster.

Now, the scenario I think is least desirable here for the game is scenario B. You have been rewarded for the knee jerk transfer. Being a sheep, as some call it. The potential downside of scenario C is why the game of previous seasons didn't encourage people thinking differently. And while thinking differently and getting it wrong shouldn't be a good thing either, I think it creates a more fun game if you can try out a different pick and only lose the actual points you lose, plus potential transfer hits, if you get it wrong. Siggy scored 11 points in gameweek 3 and you didn't get them. It might work out to 15 or 19 if you took a hit or two. It's a fair punishment and a big deal.

Some will argue that playing the price market takes skill and is an added dimension to the game. I can see that aspect of it. I agree that it is a skill. It's just not a skill I'm particularly interested in myself, and also one that I think favours those with a lot of time at their hands late evenings a bit too much. On top of that I think the early changes, while requiring skill, come with their own element of luck. The same early transfer might reap great rewards one week and end up with a midweek injury the next week. It's a random element not directly related to the football. Not my cup of tea.

Last I'd like to add that I think that the price change system does add a certain dynamic to the game. Every week the landscape is a little bit different. I quite like that, so I'd possibly be inclined to keep these slow price changes rather than scrapping them at all.

TLDR: The earlier price change system favoured bandwagon hoppers too much and created a strong template team for the early and mid part of the season.

Good post. But there will always be a template team regardless of price changes, I feel. Last years model (and the year before) did reward the multiple hit, early bandwagon jumpers. And there are clearly a lot of people who think it's more fun to play that way (me included). This year I think you have to be more careful - and a lot of people like to play this way too. There's no 'better' way - but there are a lot of preferences one way or the other.

I agree with lots of this. As ive posted below i think FPL have tried to address the worst excesses of the price changes in recent seasons - ie where basically if you didnt hop on the right bandwagon you got screwed.

Thats not really skill, thats just luck. I think the system was close to the point where all you had to do was hop on the latest trends and the rewards were so great for those punts that did work out that it doesnt matter if a few dont.

            • 16 Years

Thinking about this - it's a very good point. Last year, taking point hits were a no-brainer. If you did it early enough the player you got in would give you a 0.3 raise in the following week plus a raise the following Saturday - even if they were replaced or injured. 0.2 on your selling value without too much effort even with an FT - and you can multiply this with a hit. So there wasn't really a debate when it came to taking hits. I think now you must consider hits a little more carefully as the rewards aren't so great if you pick a bad one.

Yep, and i think its been heading that way for some time. The same was true the season before.

This is why I applaud FPL for the change, a) because i think it needed it. b) because it keeps us on our toes and gives those smart enough to figure it out (and exploit it) a potential edge.

In oder to make the game as diverse and intersting as possible there needs to be good price discovery in the market. This means if a player is unpopular he should fall until sufficient people think he has reached 'fair value' in the sense he is 'punt worthy'.

The system leeds far to quickly to template teams because the market construction is and always has been poor.

Siggy Fab Ramsey Sterling is already template amongst casuals never mind here.

In this sense the problem is not too few fast rises but no enough falls at the low ownership end of the market.

Also players should continue to rise when heavily owned with much less overall NTI, as this corresponds to a higher than initial % of the overall active market that doesn't own a given player.

Pretty sure noone will read this at this point, but hey. I thought I was the only one with this view. Agree with every single point. The largest issue imo, was the mechanics for price drops..... never been intuitive.

For example, say a player begins grossly over priced, for arguments sake, FPL got it wrong and Eriksen's start price was 11. In the simplest of terms.... in a perfect market, lack of demand should drive his price down to a "fair value". That is, after a few weeks and Eriksen's ownership is virtually 0% then that needs to be the trigger for price drops and not % drop of initial ownership (too reliant on FPL getting start price perfect). In my exaggerated example to illustrate a point, Eriksen is effectively taken out of the game, reducing the viable midfielders pool and encouraging templates through lesser choice (noone will pay that premium for 4-4.5 points/game, but most would gladly pay 7-7.5M).

The price changes should be designed to keep a wider range of players viable but it doesn't work, and never has.

Charlie1x is spot on in highlighting the issues as it stood, and this year's changes are a step backward imo.

I prefer how it is now, you don't get tied to keep players by their value increasing so much. As it is now you can move players that have done well out for a short period, not lose too much value on them, and then get them back later on if you want without too much difficulty.

Another point I'd make is that having a really high team value isn't always that useful. Imagine a scenario where welbeck fires for arsenal, sig maintains his form, and a couple like tadic and de jong become immense (all plausible). Suddenly we'd struggle to spend all our money and those with higher TV would feel obliged to buy more expensive players

I've also noticed that while many of us have high TVs by the end of the season, the players at the very top often have rather lower TVs, because they have delayed their transfers till the end of the game-week, bought the players who they expected to score more points rather than those who are most popular, and not been afraid to lose value when selling players who are no longer performing.

This pattern has been somewhat distorted in the last season or two because of the excessively fast price rises.

I'm all in favour of keeping price changes, but slowish ones like this season. I'm undecided about whether or not the information should be available on FPL's own website.

God no, its an important part of the game. You speak of it being as relevant as in previous seasons - well i think it has become skewed in recent seasons, possibly due to the sheer numbers playing the game and taking advantage of the price change websites.

This has led to an increase in the kind of Team Value achievable with ease. In the last few seasons it has been easy to achieve ~115m as a TV by the end of the season. This didnt happen when FPL started out.

I think FPL have tried to redress the balance slightly. It remains to be seen if they have gauged it right. I still think it is an important part of the game, possibly even more so, and it may now require a degree of thought and skill to achieve a decent team value.

I think they are trying to get back to how things used to be when FPL first started. The dynamic of how FPL is played (numbers of managers and those monitoring accurate price change info) has changed the way the player market works, i think they are just trying to bring back in line with how it was originally intended.

There is literally NO argument in its favour beyond 'I liked it how it was' and 'it helps stop casuals.'

Absolute rubbish. The game is so much more open for variety when the prices move more slowly. Price changes being a core part of the game stifles variety in teams, which is a bad thing.

I agree, the old system favours greatly people who were aware of playing T.V. I played the game for a couple of years before realising/appreciating just how big an impact it had. I think that casuals is banded about too much on here as if the people who don't think about FPL 24/7 don't deserve to have a level playing field and that its their own fault that they are ignorant to stuff. Also the attitude that if a casual picks a player who scores well its pure luck whereas if an experienced player picks the same person up its skill. thats just b.s. Hopefully this new approach will make it a better game for everyone, not just us "in the know" so to speak

I am late to the conversation, as often happens with Hot Topics, but I find the whinging on here about the mystery of price changes rather shocking this season when there are so many affordable options right now.

Look at the total score leaderboard on the FPL page. Who do you want that you can't get? Last year's pricing system would have made several players much more expensive than they are this year and a template based on value at least as much as points would be forming already. For people who seem to abhor casuals I can't imagine a more lockstep, groupthinking formation than that.

If you can't have everyone you can afford then you have to make choices based on hunches, flair, stats, patience, irrational loyalty to club/country/dreamy haircuts, etc. How would it be more enjoyable to play it for prices before these reasons?

Price changes are part of the game and make it more challenging, but not too challenging. What I want is to get the full sell-on price when I sell a player, not just half of it. That penalizes me for buying and holding good players, and makes it too hard to replace players who are injured, suspended, or out of form.

No price changes in the pay game though. That's all about picking a squad that you think will stay fit until Jan more than anything, as there are no more transfers after this week until then.

My main problem with price rise/fall has always been that when the price rises of X player, I don't get that same high value for that player. E.g: Currently Fab's price is 9.2 but it has only risen to 9.1 so if i sell him (not that I want to) I will get less.
The best way to counter this price rise/fall is have 2 wild cards any time in the season..

I would like to see price protection removed for players injured or suspended, that would increase the need for transfers, and encourage variation.

I was debating the same last night too. A lot of people seem to think Cesc is essential. I, however, would disagree.

I don't think Cesc is essential. He will be a steady flow of points, no doubt but I am gonna hope Costa can 'cover' for the lack of Cesc/ Hazard

I also don't think I'd ever Captain Cesc. I would Captain Hazard but I'm not getting them feels with Hazard yet, mate 🙂

Hey mate! I saw your response to this last night too.

I'll be honest. I did actually have a look at Gerrard. I think you should go ahead with it.

Fabregas has 40% ownership as compared to 5.5% of Stevie G.

The only thing I don't like is, I already have Sterling and I wouldn't feel comfortable doubling up with Stevie. That too with the Champions League games

there is that but I thought Pool looked very lively against both Spurs and City (1st half, I missed the 2nd half). Yeah. Im also considering the ownership too and hoping Fabs has a downturn too. It is risky but could be worth it. Liverpool have some tasty fixtures coming up and I want to be "all in"

I don't know the prices, as I am not playing this one, but if I were about to go for some punts, it'll be Grosicki (assuming he's a mid in the game) and Glik from the defence as he's pretty good at the corners and the CS is on the cards in this GW at least.

Planned to use it this GW from the offset
Decided against it with the slower transfer market

        Moya (4.0) from Atletico

Durm (4.0) from BVB, he's been playing for them lately
I always pick Uchida at 4.0, pretty good attacking potential

Garanteed starter indeed. I'm an Anderlecht fan and we don't even have a backup for him. He will play every single minute.

Tadic/Mirallas for me. Haven't seen Soton playing this season. Mirallas could have easily get 3 goals against Ars/Che but he is poor finisher.

If I play safe then Tadic.

        posted mine above.

It was pretty shocking - I'd planned for three weeks and a WC anyway (only to get a shite three weeks and see the transfer market go bust) but figured plan B, take a hit and sort the defence would be ok if my players stayed fit.

Looks like i'm reverting to plan A now.

I had to change things around and wanted to do it quickly and without hits. I also felt last year that holding onto it until the double gw's didn't give that great an advantage. Its better to sort the mess out early and hopefully reap the benefits from that

      Guys my current team -
      Krul - Foster
      Jones- Debuchy-Chester-Wisdom-Terry
      Sanchez-Sigurdsson-Sterling-Lamela-Hoilett
      Fletcher-Rooney-Jovetic

Got a FT and 2.8 in the vault. I was thinking of activating the WC, any suggestions anyone?

Debuchy to 4.5 like pva Wilson would free up more cash and over the next 2 gw's upgrade jovetic and fletcher

Because the owner wants to recoup some of his losses. Hence the trade of JRod to Real.
