Budget Alternatives

With many looking to free up cash to afford premium options that are cropping up, I’ve decided to write an article on same-team budget alternatives. These alternatives are not necessarily better prospects than their premium counterparts, but they definitely provide excellent value for their difference in price.

Raheem Sterling & Jordan Henderson

Team: Liverpool

Points Difference: 6 ( 40 – RS, and 34 – JH )

Price difference: 3.0 ( 9.0 – RS, and 6.0m – JH )

Ownership Difference: 40.5% (53% – RS, and 12.5% – JH )

Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson have performed very well so far this season and they are both viable Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options. However, Sterling has attracted far more owners than Henderson, with the pacey winger sitting on a colossal ownership of 53%, while his national and club team-mate has a significantly lower ownership of 12.5%. With a vast difference in their popularity, Henderson remains very much a differential and a possible under-the-radar alternative to Sterling.

Henderson has scored one goal, provided three assists and notched up five FPL bonus points. Meanwhile, Sterling has scored on three different occasions so far and picked up two assists along the way, as well as six FPL bonus points. As pointed out above, as it stands, the difference in their points totals is a meagre six. Fantasy managers ought to be asking themselves whether that six points is really worth 3.0 more.

I expect Sterling to outscore Henderson but I think the former Sunderland man provides excellent value and has been a lot more attacking this season – Rodgers has also said that he aims to develop Henderson into a Ramsey-esqe player this season, with him getting forward a lot more.

In addition, Henderson has only created three chances fewer than Sterling, and with him showing that he can produce FPL points at a level that almost matches his more expensive team mate, Henderson could very well be an excellent way to free up cash in order to afford other big names that are popular at the moment like Sergio Aguero and Leighton Baines. I think he is one of the top budget alternatives in the game and is definitely being overlooked by many.

David Silva & James Milner

Team: Manchester City

Points Difference: 8 ( 28 – DS, 20 – JM )

Price Difference: 3.8 ( 9.1 – DS, 5.3 – JM )

Ownership Difference: 10.8% ( 11.6% – DS, 0.8% – JM )

Nasri’s long-term injury has given James Milner a spot in City’s starting 11, and the Englishman has returned Pellegrini’s faith with fantastic performances in each of the last four games he’s started. Milner has racked up 19 points in his last four games, whilst Silva has only managed 15 in the same amount of time, a fairer comparison considering Milner didn’t start the first three games. Even without Milner starting the first three, and only playing a part in one, the Englishman is only eight points behind the slick passing David Silva, a fairly insignificant gap even before considering the difference in minutes played.

To reinforce the impressive FPL performances from Milner, his underlying stats are excellent. In City’s last game against Aston Villa, Milner created eight chances, the highest of the Gameweek and five more than the popular David Silva. Since the Englishman’s reinstatement to the starting 11, he has created two more chances than Silva. This shows just how much value Milner provides, being able to surpass the Spaniard for creativity and assist potential whilst maintaining a respectable goal threat. He would also be an excellent differential, at 0.8% ownership. At a price that’s 3.8 cheaper than Silva, I think Milner presents himself as a fantastic budget alternative to the more favoured Spaniard.

Tadic & Mane

Team: Southampton

Points Difference: 19 ( 25 – DT, 6 – SM )

Price Difference: 0.6 ( 7.5 – DT, 6.9 – SM )

Ownership Difference: 2.8% ( 2.9% – DT, 0.1% – SM )

Both Dusan Tadic and Saido Mane are new Saints recruits this season. Mane arrived a lot later due to work permit issues and he has only been involved in the last two Gameweeks. Over this short period the Senegalese international has matched Tadic’s points total for 0.6 less, an amount that could be very valuable to those on a tight budget that just need that 0.1 or 0.2 more for a certain Leighton Baines or Sergio Aguero. This shows that Mane is more than capable of keeping up pace with his premium-priced counterpart.

Saido Mane was very unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet against Spurs, coming very close to finishing a glaring opportunity created by Bertrand. He seems to be quite the goal threat and has so far looked a better option for goals than his Serbian team-mate. His record is also quite astonishing, albeit being in the Bundesliga, with 23 goals and 18 assists in 50 games for Red Bull Salzburg last season. He’s managed to perform quite impressively in the Premier league as well, with his stats looking very good over the past two Gameweeks. Despite playing fewer minutes than Tadic, Mane has managed to create  more big chances and has had the same number of touches in the penalty area. Interestingly enough, Mane has also created two more chances than his more expensive team-mate since his arrival.

This could be great for those on a tight budget, with Mane seemingly more than capable of keeping pace with or even surpassing Tadic as an FPL prospect. Mane looks like a fantastic punt and budget alternative at 0.1% ownership and 0.6 less.

This is excellent. Hope this turns into a regular series of articles. The Sterling and Henderson one in particular is a really persuasive argument.

Cheers, Jonty. I'd hope so too! Had to replace my "Hot Cakes & Stale Bakes" one this week....really struggling to find time to write these days. Couldn't even pop in Cazorla/Wilshere & Sanchez and Azpilicueta & Ivanovic! 3 will do for now though 🙂

Yeap! Wakey's been banging on about it all week now, and I think he might've even made the switch this week! Led me to think of the idea...
A really nice way to pocket 3m. Especially when their points totals are so similar.

Perhaps do three like this every now and again when you get time. This three are good as they are teams where the fixtures are fairly good over the next few weeks so are moves that make sense and where there is a credible cheaper alternative. I'm very tempted to shun Sterling for Henderson this week in the Scout Picks for example.

Yeah, three sounds good, and the articles are probably better off spaced out as more budget replacements pop up over a longer period of time. Will see if I can come up with 3 every week, provided I have the free time.

It's really quite interesting when you think about it. Most people are of the opinion that a budget alternative is the inferior option and that's that. And of course that might be the case but when you factor in the cash it frees up and other areas you are now able to invest in, they could turn out to be very astute moves!

Hendo could be great if it allows you to spend a big 3m elsewhere! Is Paul still leading atm?

The people calling me mad for doing Sterling and Duff to Henderson and Baines won't agree. 😉

that sounds like a great move. One good player in exchange for two good players. No brainer.

Agree with Jonty, I sort of have to don't I 😉

But as highlighted in the article, and a little piece below Henderson is really a fantastic alternative and your transfer is a perfect example of what the switch allows you to do! Baines is a fantastic addition to your squad, and a huge upgrade on Baines whilst compromising a little or even not at all with the Sterling-->Hendo switch!

          Good luck, WR. 🙂

All eyes on Sterling this weekend - game time, fitness, pressure on etc.

Decent options around the 6-7 mark now - will see how it pans out first I think though...

With regards to the Sterling vs Henderson worth mentioning Sterling has had 20 goal attempts vs 7 over Henderson in less minutes, so the goal threat different really is significant. (Well over 3 times higher strike rate on a a per minute basis).
Not sure I'd be happy with Henderson as a replacement on that basis, but certainly consider him as a supplement.

Hendo wouldn't be a straight replacement, it has to be taken as part of a change that involves a £3m upgrade elsewhere

I guess if that 3M was used towards Sturridge. Given the current fixtures I'd be worried I was missing out on the brunt of the Liverpool attack otherwise.

Agreed, Sterling is definitely superior in goal threat, but what matters is FPL points and Henderson really isn't far behind atm!

And one thing I've neglected to mention in my article is Bonus Points. Sterling has 1 more than Henderson, but it seems that Henderson is more likely to get bonus points than Sterling wether or not he outperforms him in terms of goals/assists.

Henderson picked up a bap against Spurs and Everton. In both cases he scored 0 goals and only managed an assist against Spurs, yet he picked up a bonus point in each game.

Sterling notched once and got an assist against Spurs yet he didn't receive a single bonus point!!

Quite interesting actually! Shame I missed it for my article 😛

Plus, I did mention at the start that "These alternatives are not necessarily better prospects than their premium counterparts, but they definitely provide excellent value for their difference in price." 🙂

Hmm very interesting on the bonus points.

On more thought it does make me think that perhaps Sterling is not the best value use of a Liverpool midfielder slot.

Im interested in Milner, especially when I was looking at his stats. My concern is playing time. Nasri isn't far from return so would it just be for a couple of weeks?

If i was to have a one week punt on a city mid, would go for Lampard i think. Decent chance of starting this week.

Heres something worth thinking about. If you should be persuaded that Sterling to Henderson is a good move then surely you should also consider other cheaper option midfielders as well?

Guys im currently on top of my league on 387 points and wc still in hand but I don't want to get complacent,
I have 2 free trades this week and I am looking for trade suggestions to strengthen my squad or should I hold off till next week or till needed.

(was thinking down grading Krul to 4.0 and using the extra to upgrade Van Aanholt to 5.0 Tomkins/Kaboul etc or using the money to fix the isgrove situation ?)

    THOUGHTS?

    Mannone

    Clyne, Ivanovic, Taylor

    Di María, Sigurdsson, Fábregas, Sterling

    Naismith, Diego Costa, Agüero

    Subs:
    Krul, Wisdom, van Aanholt, Isgrove

With a baby on the way I haven't been watching as much football as usual this season. By now I'd usually have a list of 'future gems' on the go... Usually fringe / youth players... hoping for the right moment for an educated punt. So far this season all I've come up with is Mahrez and Buckley, who both look really exciting attacking prospects, though the two of them are at least on the periphery of the radar by now around here.

Would very much appreciate any tips for slightly off-the-radar fantasy prospects to keep an eye on!

As an Arsenal fan I'd suggest Hector Bellerin, and maybe Hayden if he starts this weekend. This will be the case if Koscielny's injury takes a few weeks and/or if Chambers keeps picking up yellow cards.

Is it worth downgrading Haz to Milner, to upgrade Moreno-Naylor to Ivanovic-Baines...?

Tough one but I'd say no. I think Hazard will start scoring and Moreno might pick up a clean sheet or two and some attacking returns considering the fixtures. Milner's security of starts isn't great with Nasri due to return from injury and City's large squad in general!

I dont think Henderson will keep on scoring nor assisting , and I think Sterling is the most direct and threatening midfielder in the league so a swap here is not very likely .

James Milner is a fantastic budget alternative to Silva .. i totally agree with you .
He caught my eye against Villa and your stats here made me feel very confident making this move.

    Great idea .. Great article
