Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 16

Five more players fell victim of the Suspension Tightrope over the Gameweek 16 action. Villa’s Alan Hutton disappointed his numerous new owners by collecting a fifth yellow of the season during Saturday’s midlands derby loss at West Brom – the right-back will sit out this weekend’s visit of United before returning to action for the Gameweek 18 trip to Swansea.

In terms of Fantasy popularity, Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was the most high-profile – fortunately for his 24% of owners, the Italian will miss tonight’s cup clash with Sheffield United and will therefore be available for the weekend visit of Everton.

The same scenario applies to Newcastle’s Daryl Janmaat. Handed a fifth yellow in the 4-1 loss at Arsenal, he’ll skip Wednesday’s Capital One Cup trip to Spurs but is free to play in the weekend Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

The cases of Tom Cleverley and Tom Huddlestone are a little more complex after both earned their fifth caution last time out. Although Villa’s on-loan Cleverley is ineligible for this weekend’s clash with parent club United, the FA have confirmed that he will still serve the one-match suspension against the Red Devils and will be available for the Boxing Day clash against Swansea.

Huddlestone earned his fifth yellow of the season in Hull’s loss to Chelsea, therefore triggering an automatic one-match ban. The midfielder was then dismissed for serious foul play in the 2-0 loss at the Bridge – which earns three more matches on the sidelines and extends his suspension to four Gameweeks. Huddlestone will therefore sit out three home fixtures (SWA, LEI, EVE) and a trip to Sunderland – he’ll next be available for action on January 4, when the Tigers face Arsenal in the FA Cup Third Round.

Villa’s Kieran Richardson is also sidelined through suspension. The midfielder was sent off for serious foul play at the weekend and will miss the next three before returning in time for the New Year’s Day showdown at home to Palace.

The Tightrope now creaks under the weight of 30 players as we head towards Gameweek 17. This week’s new entries include Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, George Boyd, Marouane Chamakh, James Chester, Cheick Tioté, Jordi Gómez, Connor Wickham, Steven Gerrard, Mario Balotelli, Ryan Mason and Ki Sung-Yeung. Balotelli now has 20 PL bookings to his name – exactly the same number as he has Premier League goals.

Diego Costa owners will be a little concerned after the Chelsea striker joined Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole on seven bookings for the season after incurring the referee’s wrath against Hull. Given that the 10-yellow card deadline is in mid-April, Costa will need to curb his enthusiasm for fear of earning another suspension further down the line.

In terms of returning players, Cesc Fabregas, Charlie Austin, Lukas Fabianski, Calum Chambers, Steven Taylor, Moussa Sissoko and Gareth Barry are all back in contention for this weekend. Barry’s caution in Gameweek 15 took him onto 99 Premier League yellows – one more and he’ll be the top-flight’s first centurion for bookings.

I know this must not be the best place to say this but I'll go ahead regardless:

Today is a sad day for Pakistan and I say that with the heaviest of hearts. Coming across the horrific news that 120 children were martyred today in a terrorist attack has left me numb and speechless. My country is one of the most beautiful countries in the world with some of the most amazing people ever. Those little children that lost their lives today were our sisters and brothers. Sad to see what's happening 🙁

Today is marked as a dark day for humanity as those innocent children lost their lives in the name of revenge. May the souls of all the people who died rest in peace.

There are so many conflicting emotions regarding the goings on in this world with innocent people usually the ones who pay the heaviest price- their lives- and many different views of the situation.
I've my own opinion which I won't voice on this forum, however this is a crass, immature & ignorant comment to make and does you no credit.

Whilst we all aim to be number 1 in the world at the end of the FPL season we also know that this I'm I unlikely and unrealistic.

So what is your 'real' main aim when the season begins?

    A) Mini League - Is it to win a particular mini league (perhaps a cash league) - or to finish eg top 5, top 10 of a particular mini league

    B) Rival - In a Mark vs Granville way is your main aim to beat a friend, relative, FPL rival or just one of the scouts. Maybe you are happy finishing 2,000,000 in the world as long as your rival finishes 2,000,001

    C) Achieving a certain rank - Maybe you aim for the top 1,000 every year or maybe the top 10,000 or as a newbie the top 100,000 is seen as an achievement.

    D) Beating a previous year - Like all good real life managers are you simpy aiming for year on year progression? Maybe you finished 20,000 last year and would be delighted finishing 18,000 this year. Or maybe 3 years ago everything went right and you achieved a top 4,000 finish. Is the aim beating your best ever finish?

    E) Something else - Do you love maximising transfer value; Maybe you aim or a single great gameweek; Perhaps you are in it for the cups; Or have you got something else which rocks your fantasy boat?

For the record my focus is on a particular competitively fought mini league (which I mamged to just win last season). All my focus is achieving at least a cash paying place with the grand aim of retaining my title.

"Whilst we all aim to be number 1 in the world at the end of the FPL season we also know that this I'm I unlikely and unrealistic."

I find this comment rather misplaced, Demel. Whilst you yourself might be a somewhat unambitious person, I don't think that speaks for myself...or many others for that matter.

Aiming low is such a failing in life. Your comment reminds me of the golfer with a long putt whose sole aim is to get close to the hole. If he changed his mindset to thinking of holing the putt, he would achieve greater success.

My goal is to win FPL and donate my prize to the people of CAR.

I disagree. For most people the chance of being number 1 in the world fades pretty quickly. You have to get a huge amount of luck to be right in the reckoning come the latter gameweeks. So if I am 150 points off the number 1 in the world come gameweek 30 (and realistically out of the reckoning to finish number 1) should I be disappointed or give up despite being on a good overall rank and challenging high in my mini leagues? I think not. I think whilst finishing number 1 in the world is always an I'm for everyone it into most people's main target. My target is winning my cash league and plenty of others have similar targets.

However, these targets can change. Last season I entered the Europa League fantasy game. My aim was to win the national league. By gameweek 5 had finished I was 2nd in the world. My focus switched to winning an end of the group stage prize (which I did win) and finishing number 1 in the world at the end of the season (which I didn't achieve). I don't think setting realistic goals is negative thinking (especially as the goal posts can always be adjusted).

" For most people the chance of being number 1 in the world fades pretty quickly."

This is your mindset guiding you. If you think failure, that is your reality.

If you look at my gwk history, I was ranked 1 million plus.

Generally win my cash mini leagues and finish in the top 10k.

I've been floating around the top 1k for the last few weeks though, so the new goal has to be to win it this season. Unlikely, but I'm taking risks in my mini leagues instead of playing it safe, since number 1 is semi-realistic for the first time.

If I'm ahead in my (small) Mini League, which I usually am, I'll go for (E). I like chasing big week-to-week scores and do way too many transfers because of it. Can be fun if there are a lot of double game weeks at the end of the season.

      win my 3 cash leagues - trailing slightly but still there or thereabouts;
Win the pnefc league - was more chuffed to win that last year than anything else (Bailey Wright sorted me out with a signed shirt & tickets) - unlikely to win this time as 100 pts+ off the leader 🙁
Finally get in to the top 1000 - almost did it 3 years on the bounce but dropped off towards the end & well off the mark this time - hovering in the 90,000 area 🙁
Not a lot to ask is it?

Not too fussed about OR, though would like top 10k while doing stupid things like avoiding unlikeable players, chasing bandwagons, copying Triggerlips team, captaining a QPR player. Plan to be disciplined next year and try to win it. Just haven't had the confidence yet.

First, I wan't to win my mini league for the second time and beat my rivals there, second, I will fight for the Top 10 in Bosnia (now second, 2 points behind) and third, it would be nice to finish in top 10k in the world (now I am ranked 1638). We will se at the end of the season...

      1) Win all the mini leagues created with mates/work people.

      2) Top 5k overall which will probably mean I can tick off number 1.

      3) Deep cup run.

Win promotion from LAWR 7 at first attempt

First and foremost is to be among top 1k and if I achieve that I'll be close or at the top of my mini league (No cash ) .

Apart from that I like to maximise value so that at the time I activate my wildcard I've some extra cash , top of the list surely top 1k rank ^_^

After a rubbish last season, main goal is to win two particular mini-leagues (one of them being a tiny cash league). In addition to that, I would really like breaking into the top 1000, beating my previous all-time high finish of 2k.

Basically all of the above. I need multiple aims to stay interested, especially when things aren't going so well.

      A) To finish in the top 5 of the Mods/Contributors league

      B) To beat my brother in law (which should be easy although I did lose once in a particularly bad year)

      C) I really want to finish in the top 1k. Although at the very least I want to finish in the top 10k

      D) Would like to beat my best season of 2.7k

      E) I always want to have a mega week where i finish in the top 1k in one particular GW

      - Have fun
      - Great GW scores with unorthodox captain choices
      - OR means nothing
      - Beat two mates who last year were so lucky it should be illegal

A bit tired of chasing top 5k finishes or something, with pressure to have this and this player all the time. This year its for fun

      The usual.

I'd love a top 1000 finish, and to win my cash H2H league after being pipped at the post last year. Was a pretty tough GW37/38 with Liverpool failing to win the league, and simultaneously falling off top spot in my H2H, only to get the £50 consolation prize. Last year was the first year I played all the way through, without losing interest for too many weeks. I'd love to beat that rank, but obviously wherever I am week to week, I want to end up higher.

I would do that. Silva has typically produced around 150 points over the season, Duff is hurt and is not a reliable producer, and Man City defenders will start 3 of 4 matches and has a good chance of clean sheets.

Hardly. You could say Baines is the second highest scoring defender in the game and has a few plum fixtures before the January wildcard. He's also on penalties, some set pieces and plays high up, all of which increase his chance for points even with a bad game,

Similarly, Dzeko plays as lone striker for a top 2 team who have the easiest run of fixtures of all 20 teams till the wildcard. The team has also been in excellent form, and Dzeko has a proven premier league pedigree for scoring goals.

It's all a question of which way you look at it, but both transfer were sound imo. Especially Dzeko. You can't mandate for an injury during warm up.

Repost due to bottom of page luck (which is not as bad as benching Heaton over Guzan luck!):
    ********************

Thinking value (Costa vs. Giroud) and production (cheap defender vs. strong defender), besides a -4 hit, what would be downside of these two trades? Thanks.

    Costa > Giroud
    Duff > Zabaleta

    Heaton, Guzan
    Baines, Azpi, Dummett, Yun, Duff
    Yaya, Sanchez, Hazard, Downing, Boyd
    Costa, Austin, Bony
    1 FT, 0.1 itb

Wouldn't do it for a hit. Save the FT, and give Costa one more game, he's highly owned so wouldnt hurt to have him one more game. I like your two transfers, just doesn't feel worth a minus 4, when u could just as easily do it next week for free, with even more info.

Yes. Overlooked by majority on here 'cause he hasn't scored a goal away from home in a long time but people forget that he hit the post in a most recent away game & could've had 2 assists if Willian knew how to finish.

      Luk->Roonpig
      Clyne->Azpi

You don't have the money for these options so I'd be cheapening gks, Clyne, King (whoever he is) etc. Good midpark though.

Clyne ahead of one of Yun/Chester surely?

I know it's Everton but QPR are leaky at the best of times. Same goes for Hull + WBA and Swans showing decent attacking threat and Clyne still showing he can motor.

Burnley was a blip - still a lot more to come from Saints.

None of my rivals in main mini league have Yaya or RVP so whichever I get in would be a huge differential.
So Costa-> RVP or Oscar -> YAYA? (They will be captain every week)

    1. Dr Dream

Yaya....Getting RVP would leave you vulnerable with two low ownership players in RVP and Oscar...where Costa and Yaya gives you a certain amount of security in the Costa pick.

Just to pick up on Demel"s post.....I know it's naughty but has anybody ever considered setting up a purely H2H league on here for fellow members with a second team as oppose our regular teams ?

It occurred to me that tactically it would open a whole new game as it would be possible to "throw games" occasionally with multiple transfers and still only lose 3 pts...I've done all sorts of games but never one like that...would it work?

Aye...it works out really strangely...It's got very little to do with how many pts you have and is more the luck of the draw. I really think for it to work well they need to be smaller leagues that become tactical...but to do that you'd need to separate the team you have from your regular team...Then it could be fun...

Although Villa’s on-loan Cleverley is ineligible for this weekend’s clash with parent club United, the FA have confirmed that he will still serve the one-match suspension against the Red Devils and will be available for the Boxing Day clash against Swansea.
