Scout Scribbles – Shawcross Close to Potters Return

Ryan Shawcross and Remy Cabella step up their injury recoveries after returning to training. Ashley Young is doubtful for the Red Devils’ pivotal encounter with Spurs. Nigel Pearson prepares to roll out his five-man defence at the King Power Stadium, and Radamel Falcao’s United career plummets to new depths.

Shawcross pushing for weekend comeback

Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross is hopeful of being passed fit for the weekend Midlands derby against West Bromwich Albion. The 27-year-old centre-back has been recuperating from a back complaint sustained against Queens Park Rangers at the end of January. Speaking to the club’s official website, Shawcross played down the severity of the injury and explained that he was poised to step up training throughout the week with a view to being ready for the Baggies clash:

“I’m training again now and all being well I will step it up a bit over the next couple of days. I would love to be available on Saturday.I suppose it will all depend upon how I react to training and what the manager and the medical team think about it – they will have the final say. It’s an injury I picked up a while ago but I played on and it was feeling ok, but then I had a little slip in the game against Queens Park Rangers and it didn’t feel right. Thankfully it isn’t something that is too serious, it has just been a case of having a couple of injections and resting it up. Hopefully that has done the trick. It’s been five or six weeks since I last played and it has been difficult being out for so long. When you are out there putting your body on the line every week you just have to accept that sometimes you do pick up niggles.”

The Scout Says: The Potters have performed admirably in their skippers’ absence, recording three wins and a draw, with their only defeat arriving at the hands of champions Manchester City. Furthermore, they’ve shut out the opposition in their last two outings, even restricting Hull City to a solitary attempt on goal in Gameweek 27. With Philipp Wollscheid forced off on 16 minutes with a groin injury during the previous Gameweek’s win over Everton, Mark Hughes will undoubtedly be desperate for his captain to return, though if Wollscheid is sidelined for any period of time, Marc Wilson, at 4.3, could be set for a further run of starts, having appeared in the first XI in each of the last three league outings.

Cabella back in training

Remy Cabella has returned to training after a knee injury kept him sidelined for Newcastle’s last three league fixtures. The French midfielder could be made available for the Magpies’ Gameweek 29 clash away to Everton.

The Scout Says: Cabella has been far from the dominant creative influence many Toon fans hoped he would be in the wake of Yohan Cabaye’s decampment to Paris Saint-Germain, only mustering two assists so far in his debut Premier League campaign. That being said, the underlying stats suggest that recent outings for the 25-year-old have been more productive. Between Gameweek 1 and 20, Cabella fashioned 20 attempts on goal, created 23 chances and executed three through balls. While in his last five appearances for the Tynesiders, the Montpellier academy product scored his only goal, tallied 10 goal attempts, nine key passes and, again, three through balls – an indication, perhaps, that he’s growing in stature as the season progresses. His potential return, allied with Papiss Cisse’s seven-match suspension, could see John Carver move away from the recent 4-4-2 formation to accommodate the Frenchman in the attacking midfield three of a 4-2-3-1 system.

Liverpool’s long wait for FA Cup replay

Liverpool’s FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers has been confirmed for a 7.45pm kick off on Wednesday 8 April. Due to UEFA regulations that stipulate domestic league and cup fixtures can’t run concurrently with European matches, the Reds’ trip to Ewood Park couldn’t be scheduled sooner.

The Scout Says: Liverpool’s cup replay falls between an away clash against Arsenal on April 4 and a visit to Newcastle on April 13. The fact that the Merseysiders Gameweek 32 match against the Toon takes place on a Monday – as opposed to Saturday April 11 – affords Brendan Rodgers’ men an extra two days rest following their midweek exploits, reducing the likelihood of substantial rotation. As we mentioned earlier in the week, a blank Gameweek 33 and double Gameweek 34 potentially awaits Liverpool if they progress into the FA Cup semi-finals.

Pearson keeping faith in five-man defence

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson will employ a five-man defence for the first time at home this season when Hull City roll up to the King Power Stadium on Saturday. The Foxes boss has adopted the three-centre-back formation for their last four road ties and is adamant that the system doesn’t discourage attacking play:

“Formations are not the be all and end all. We have got some Premier League know-how out there now and it has also freed up some of our more creative players. I am not saying it is going to be the only way to go but it has proved to be a decent system.”

Leicester centre-back Matthew Upson echoed his manager’s sentiments, insisting that recent away performances have illustrated the set-up’s merits:

“I think this system is good and we have used it in some tough away games. It is interesting because we haven’t really used it at home yet. I think in the games we have played it in have been the right choice. The performances have maybe shown that, if not the results.”

The Scout Says: On the face of it, Pearson’s claims that their five-man defence is an effective system aren’t lent any credence by their recent away record. The Foxes have shipped nine goals in the four fixtures he’s fielded three centre-backs, while at home – where a four-man defence has been adopted – they’ve only conceded four in as many outings. However, Leicester’s recent road schedule has been as unforgiving as they come, with trips to Manchester City, Everton, Arsenal and Manchester United. Indeed, holding the Sky Blues to two goals at the Etihad and narrowly losing 2-1 to a buoyant Gunners outfit is no mean feat. Doubtless Upson and Robert Huth are strong advocates of the extra central defender, having started in Leicester’s last three sucessive road clashes. From a Fantasy perspective, Pearson’s system has still allowed Jeffrey Schlupp to operate on the left of a four-man midfield – with four goals to his name already in all competitions, the 4.5-priced defender faces seven home matches in the last 11 Gameweeks to benefit from his out of position berth.

Falcao’s United career hits rock bottom

£6 million loan signing Radamel Falcao lined up for the Manchester United Under-21s as they faced off against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, lasting 72 minutes before being substituted.

The Scout Says: The Colombian striker had a dismal evening for the youth team, failing to exert his influence and even getting in the way of two goalbound shots from the hosts. Ironic cheers are said to have accompanied Falcao’s departure from the field, as he offered little reason for Louis van Gaal to hand him a start against Spurs on Saturday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain could face month out

According to initial reports, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could face up to four weeks on the sidelines after straining his hamstring in Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over United. The 21-year-old winger is set to undergo further medical checks before a conclusive diagnosis is provided.

The Scout Says: If indeed Oxlade-Chamberlain is ruled out for a month, he’ll potentially miss home ties against West Ham and Liverpool, and visits to Newcastle and Burnley, as well the return leg against Monaco in the Champions League. The former Southampton starlet has bagged a goal in the Gunners’ previous two cup clashes and looked to be building momentum following a lengthy injury layoff. As a byproduct of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s absence, Theo Walcott or Danny Welbeck might be able to clock more minutes and forge a way back into the side due to reduced competition on the flanks.

Matic back for PSG duel

Speaking in his pre-Champions League press conference, Jose Mourinho confirmed that Nemanja Matic had recovered from an ankle knock sustained in the Blues’ Capital One Cup final celebrations, with John Obi Mikel the only absentee for their last-16 encounter against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Scout Says: Matic’s return is likely to spell the end of Kurt Zouma’s recent stint as a defensive midfielder for the Blues. The youngster was fielded alongside Cesc Fabregas in each of the last two as a result of Matic’s two-match ban – allowing Gary Cahill to partner John Terry in defence – but with Matic available, Zouma could shift into the back-four again, with Cahill dropping to the bench. Zouma has started each of the last seven home matches in all competitions ahead of this weekend’s Stamford Bridge showdown with Southampton.

Young doubtful for Tottenham tie

Ashley Young picked up a knock in United’s Fa Cup defeat to Arsenal last weekend and is a doubt for their league clash against Tottenham this weekend. The ex-Villa winger will undergo medical assessment at the Red Devils’ Carrington training facilities to determine the extent of the injury.

The Scout Says: Although Young has been handed sporadic starts by Van Gaal this campaign, the 29-year-old’s versatility on the flanks – either as a wing-back or traditional wide man – has been a useful tool in the Dutch manager’s arsenal. A potential injury setback would come at an unfortunate time for Young – in light of his winning goal against Newcastle in the previous Gameweek – and for the team itself in the wake of Angel Di Maria’s needless one-match suspension. Given that Young and Di Maria started on the flanks against Arsenal on Monday, Louis van Gaal has a major dilemma out wide, with Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj perhaps set for a rare start in the pair’s absence.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Creating the perfect Gwk 33 and Dgwk 34 sides.

The best scenario is to have a good XI in Gameweek 33, plus key players for Gameweek 34 already in place on the bench. With that in mind I thought I’d try and create the perfect Gameweek 33 and Gameweek 34 sides. I haven’t looked at cost so this is theoretical to give an idea of the personnel to keep an eye on for transfers over the next few weeks.

Here are the likely blanks and doubles along with the best fixtures each week (that is open to interpretation so these are just my personal choices)

Also if I’ve got any wrong or missed any please let me know so I can alter.

    Gwk 33 blanks

    Arsenal
    Sunderland
    Villa
    QPR
    (Hull, Liverpool)

    Best Gwk 33 fixtures

    Palace - WBA
    Everton - BUR
    Swansea – lei
Stoke - SOU.. good for defence.
    Southampton – stk
    Man City- WHU
    Spurs – new
Chelsea – MANU (good for defence especially)

    Gwk 34 Doubles

    Leicester
    Chelsea

Likely doubles - (Arsenal, Sunderland, Hull, Liverpool, Villa, QPR)

Best potential double Gameweek 34 fixtures (subject to confirmation)

    Chelsea – lei, ars
    QPR – WHU, villa
    Liverpool – hull, wba
    Arsenal – CHE, sun

    Best Gameweek 33 side

This should have two to three Chelsea players and three outfield DGWK players on the bench. Here is a typical good Gwk 33 XI

    Foster
    Naughton Wollschied Ivanovic Clyne
    Hazard Puncheon Sigurdsson Silva
    Aguero Kane

Bench – Pantillimon, Sanchez Bellerin Austin

    Best Gameweek 34 side

This is based on having two fee transfers and one hit – therefore three transfers and the assumption that few are going to want to transfer out Kane.

    Pantillimon
    Ivanovic Bellerin
    Hazard Sanchez
    Sturridge/Costa Kane Austin

This leaves three spots in the starting XI – a defender and two mids ideally.

To fill these another Chelsea defender could be good – Azpi or Terry, a Liverpool midfielder - Henderson/Sterling/Coutinho and one more mid – A QPR punt like Fer or Philips or double up on Liverpool and have Henderson and Sterling. Or an Arsenal midfielder such as Ozil if funds allow. Of these Henderson, Sterling and Terry look among best priced for their potential returns

Silva, Sigurdsson, Clyne and Puncheon are the sort of players you should be thinking of ditching this week. Another option is swapping Aguero out…that actually looks like the potentially smart move as allows significant investment and the option of Costa or Sturridge. Basically one of Silva and Aguero (for those that own both) realistically should go in Gwk 34.

As said I haven’t costed this but thought it would be a good experiment to see the sort of sides to strive for Gwk 33 and 34. With Kane and Bellerin it certainly looks feasible.

What are your perfect sides for Gwk 33 and 34?

The gwk 34 analysis should offer a useful guide to a good team to draft in for that week.

Yeah; it seems many dgw teams have good fixtures afterwards, so there is less worries about long term affect of WC-ing.

      No WC.
With planning i can do this

      Now
      Foster/Myhill
      Terry Wollo Hutton Haidria PVA
      Haz Sanchez Silva Boyd Erik
      Aguero Kane Austin

      33
      Foster
PVA (wont pay) Wollo Terry Alder Ivan
      Boyd Haz Siggy
      Kane Aguero

      Coutinio Sanchez Giroud

      34
      Foster
      PVA Terry Ivan
Sanchez Haz Coutnio Siggy (maybe hendo with a hit)
      Austin Aguero Giroud

No hits. Obviously all this planning will have t be torn up with injuries, sending offs and fixtures being moved to other game weeks. Liverpool going out would help us non wc holders

I'm on a WC, so will probably ditch Kane for the DGW. Might go all out and have a Sturridge, Costa, Giroud front three.

Love it. That will take some balls, but Spurs' fixtures are average/poor towards the end of the season, and this would be the best way to maximise your DGW potential.

this is very much like my current plans
at the moment i am debating between fitting in either ivan or costa, I can't see a way of getting both.
At present I an on the ivan route as that allows me to keep giroud, with costa route I would need to get cheap DGW defender and not sure it will return the same
      any advice

I favour Ivan too as he offers more than Terry - or rather appears to. Whereas with Costa I think Sturridge will emerge as a good alternative dgwk player.

      Barring injuries, mine will be
      GW33:
      Krul
      Bertrand, Clyne, Ivan, Terry
      Hazard, Eriksen, Mane
      Kun, Kane, Sakho
      Bench: Pantilimon, Schlupp/Skrtel/Bellerin, Coutinho, Mahrez
      GW34:
      Pantilimon
      Ivan, Terry, Schlupp/Skrtel/Bellerin
      Hazard, Ozil, Coutinho, Mane (Mahrez)
      Kun, Austin, Sakho

Too much is up in the air at the moment. Arsenal, Sunderland, Villa and QPR could have their double in any of GW31, 34 or 37. Liverpool and Hull could have theirs in 34 or 37 or Liverpool could just get knocked out by Blackburn.

Having triple Chelsea looks good. A couple of cheap Leicester players could be useful as they have a decent GW33 fixture followed by a DGW and good fixtures from now until the end of the season. Of course, it's Leicester but it will help finance the likes of Costa and Sturridge. Pointless to think too much about it whilst we have no confirmed dates.

Indeed, all hypothetical at this stage. I'm working towards what I know at the moment and that will be getting Hazard in and making sure I have a playable bench for gwk 33. Once those issues are addressed we should no more.

I think the blanks though are fairly nailed on.

Yeah the blanks are pretty nailed, though Wild Rover and Super Dunny may disagree on one of them 😉

A DGW31 for Arsenal and Sunderland would be very useful for my team and I suspect for many others too. Would make Sanchez easy to sell in GW33 (blank followed by Chelsea) to raise funds. Would also get a double for me out of Pants and Defoe before they get kicked out at the end of their good fixtures.

Good point this. There's poitns to be had in GW's 29-32 as well, so to plan everything of DGW one might miss out on some form players. For us with WC, I think it's best to do transfers .more or less as normal up until GW34.

I disagree about the ditching Silva and/or Agüero part. I thought this last GW tought us a lesson about ditching players on form with a good fixture for a player with a DGW just for the sake of the DGW. City play Villa at home that weekend, and could easily score as many goals there as Chelsea will score combined in their two tough games (Leicester has only conceded more than twice in one game once). And although Kane has a tough fixture that round, what if he maintains this form that he's in? Will you all just drop him because he has no DGW?

I'm planning to keep Silva, Agüero and Kane for GW34 and go with 8 DGWers unless Kane takes a massive drop in form. This also leaves me without any hits and not having to sort out i.e. Austin afterwards (liv, mci).

Don't understand the advice to take out some of those players Jonty...

Why would you take Sigurðsson out, when he has a great run of fixtures after this week, no blank, is one of the best value players in the game, and is an easy straight swap for Henderson if you decide you want more DGW players?

Why would you take Agüero out, when he has no blank, and is probably the highest points potential player, and faces Villa in the DGW?

Why would you take Clyne out, when he has easy fixtures after this week until GW38, no blank, and is one of the best value defenders in the game?

There are players you can move out, but it's not these ones! 😯

This is advice for those looking to maximise dgwk players. Be great to see a follow up looking at creating the perfect gwk 35-28 team for the run in. Could then cross reference this with the above to see which players are good to keep.

As said re Aguero and Silva - it would be wise to ditch one during Gameweek 34 toinvest in a dgwk player. Which one is up to each manager though.

I may keep Aguero, I may keep Silva - but I'm not going into gwk 34 with both when Hazard. Sanchez, Giroud, Sturridge and Costa all have a dgwk then.

        1. Carlos Kickaball

I don't think I'll have Silva, as he's not worth £9.5m+, was good from an FPL perspective when playing the #10 role, but now they're back to playing 2 strikers I'm not being fooled by an unlikely haul against Newcastle into points chasing him in.

Getting rid of Sigurðsson now, for a DGW player would be a poor strategy though whatever your perspective, as he plays in the blank week, and is a straight swap for Henderson and not that much more money for Sterling, so you'd just keep and then lose him after 33, same goes for those with a WC. If anything Sigurðsson is the kind of midfielder you want to think about buying, so that you can free up funds to move in Costa if he doesn't get a yellow card this week, or Ivanović.

    Morning all

I’ve seen a few posts suggesting how the upcoming DGW can be negotiated by those who have already cashed in their WC. I.e. ways of getting a full XI out in GW33 as well as plenty of doublers for GW34. As a WC holder I have been thinking about how to make best use of it to get an advantage.

To have a decent DGW, those not on WC will have to bench their big guns in 33. Eg. Sanchez, Ozil, Giroud, but this leaves c. 30m on the bench. If those with a WC are prepared to sell these guys, we could get an extra c. 15m out on the pitch in 33, and get them back if we want with a GW34 WC.

Fwiw, I am currently planning on selling Sanchez and Austin in 33, as I won’t lose too much value on them. Does anyone else have thoughts on how to best use the leftover WCs?

I agree completely, I think us with our wc left can go for a great side in gw 33 without have to think one gw ahead and then put out 11 dgw players the week after. Should be a huge benefit imo

As a fellow wildcard holder, I look forward to selling all my non-playing big hitters in 33 to put out a great team and then wildcarding in 34 and realising that I cannot afford the same players back anymore.
It's going to require a calculator this one.

You're not likely to take hits to get rid of big hitters you are going to want back in GW34 so I think you'll have to judge GW32 and GW33 to decide which ones you are able to shed.

GW33 best fixtures for big hitters are Man City at home to West Ham, and maybe Chelsea at home to Man U (defenders?), Saints away at Stoke (defence?) and Spurs away at Newcastle for attack..... can't see a massive boost for you in GW33 from that lot to be honest.

          Anyway, good luck Steve 😉

it doesnt matter how much money you have on bench or on the pitch, players will score you points or they wont. There is no guarantee having three city players will bring in more points than two palace and a southampton

Fair enough. Given the choice, I tend to play my higher value players and bench cheaper ones. Just in general, not as a rule

As a non WC holder i completely agree. Your advantage is over the next few weeks and massively in 33. 34 is fairly easy for us

Yep, those of us with a wildcard will have to look at GW 33 to be the week where we gain some ground. I will be adjusting my team with GW 33 in mind over the next few weeks, ignoring GW 34 as that can be sorted out with the WC.

P.s I like your username and grav 😆

Those of you with wildcards are in better position, no doubt about that.

I'm potentially looking at having to bench Austin and Sanchez and then having to get rid of Aguero or Kane if I want Costa.....not good!

    Morning guys,

Half the week down, not long to the weekend now! 😀

    How am I looking?

    Foster
    Clyne Rose Moreno
    Sanchez(vc) Hazard Eriksen Silva
    Kane Giroud Agüero(c)

    Bench: Boyd Bruce Baird

    Should my 1FT be…

    A) Eriksen > Coutinho

I remember some analysis last season pointing towards 12 points. I think that's about right. It seems fairly reasonable to suggest that anyone can get an equivalent GW34 team to wildcarders with minimal hits, so it appears to be the difference in teams for GW33 which will provide the WCers with their best chance to sieze some advantage.
