Scout Scribbles – Skrtel Slapped with FA Charge

As Liverpool lick their wounds after a gutting 2-1 defeat to fierce rivals United, centre-back Martin Skrtel is left to rue a rash challenge that’s resulted in an FA charge. To compound Brendan Rodgers’ woes, Daniel Sturridge suffered a fresh injury setback during the United clash and has been ruled out of England’s European qualifiers. Elsewhere, Gareth McAuley’s one-match suspension is switched over to Craig Dawson in light of the former’s wrongful dismissal at the Etihad.

Skrtel pays price for late stamp

The FA took retrospective action and charged Martin Skrtel with violent conduct after the Liverpool defender appeared to stamp on Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in Sunday’s match-up. The incident was not seen at the time by referee Martin Atkinson, but the FA elected to submit the footage to an independent panel of three former officials who reached a unanimous decision. Speaking in his post-match interview, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insisted that there was no malicious intent from Skrtel as he made a fair attempt to retrieve possession:

“I think that it’s towards the end of the game, he’s been pushed upfield, but I don’t think he caught him with intent. I think he’s trying to nick the final contact on the ball, and if he does that then he probably gets a penalty, so he’s stretching. The ball goes into the ‘keeper’s arms, and obviously he’s caught him after that. But he’s just trying to get a toe on the ball, and if he does that and gets brought down then it’s probably a penalty. I didn’t think it was on purpose, at all, but obviously when the ‘keeper gets the studs like that then it can be a bit painful for him.”

The Scout Says:Skrtel has until 6pm this evening to respond to the charge and, if found guilty by the FA, will miss the Reds’ league clashes against Arsenal and Newcastle United, as well as their FA Cup replay against Blackburn Rovers. The Slovakian centre-back’s absence should afford Dejan Lovren a run of starts in central defence, providing the latter can recover from the abdominal wall injury that’s ruled him out of Croatia’s European Championship qualifiers. Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run, prior to their 2-1 defeat at the hands of United, was predicated on a remarkable defensive record – the Merseysiders conceded just eight goals and recorded eight clean sheets in that period – so any enforced changes in their rearguard threaten to disrupt the momentum generated. Arsenal’s high-powered offense and a sprightly Hull City outfit – who more than held their own against Chelsea’s plethora of stars – await Liverpool in their next three league encounters. Doubtless Rodgers would have preferred to call upon the services of the ever-reliable Skrtel but may well have to invest faith in the sometimes erratic Lovren or turn to Kolo Toure, depending on the Croatian’s availability. With Simon Mignolet also set for ankle scans, it’s fair to say that Rodgers faces an anxious wait over the international break before domestic action resumes in 11 days’ time.

Sturridge suffers fresh injury setback

Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2016 qualifiers following scans on a hip injury sustained against Manchester United. The medical team at St George’s Park made the decision on Monday afternoon that Sturridge should sit out the international ties and return to Merseyside.

The Scout Says: Athough Liverpool are yet to declare the extent of Sturridge’s injury, it’s likely that both club and country will be unwilling to take even the slightest chance on the striker’s fitness, given that the former Chelsea marksman is only just hitting his stride following a lengthy injury lay-off – which, incidentally, can be traced back to a thigh strain sustained in England training last September. Four goals and three assists in eight appearances since returning from injury offered very encouraging signs before this latest setback, particularly for Fantasy managers eyeing up a potential double Gameweek for the Reds (subject to the outcome of their FA Cup replay). Beyond a tricky match-up at the Emirates next time out, Liverpool’s subsequent batch of fixtures (NEW, hul, wba, QPR) could offer Sturridge the springboard to play himself back into form. In the event that Sturridge’s latest complaint takes a while to resolve, Raheem Sterling could profit by being tasked with spearheading the Reds’ attack again. The youngster has drawn blanks in each of his last three since being moved to the right wing-back berth but prior to that, he’d scored or assisted in five of his last six appearances when fielded in a central position.

Dawson banned as FA overrule on-field call

The FA have transferred Gareth McAuley’s one-match suspension to Craig Dawson after referee Neil Swarbrick wrongly dismissed the former in a case of mistaken identity during West Brom’s visit to Manchester City. The Baggies decided against appealing for fear of having the ban extended.

The Scout Says: The fact that 10-man West Brom restricted Manchester City to just three goals last Saturday is testament to the tactical discipline manager Tony Pulis has instilled since the turn of the year. Prior to his appointment, the Baggies conceded 1.45 goals per match and recorded six shut-outs in 20 fixtures. Since his arrival, the West Midlanders have conceded just one goal per game and already doubled their clean sheet tally, with six in their last 10 fixtures. Dawson (4.5) emerged as the cheapest of the viable routes into West Brom’s rearguard – ahead of Joleon Lescott (5.1) and Gareth McAuley (4.8) – so it’s a nuisance for his 4% ownership that a favourable home encounter against Queens Park Rangers is next on the agenda, though he returns in Gameweek 32 for a home clash with Leicester before travelling to Selhurst Park. Chris Baird or Andre Wisdom should get the nod in Dawson’s short-term absence, though those looking for an alternative route into Pulis’ backline may consider the 4.0-priced Boaz Myhill, given that Ben Foster is out for the next six months. It’s worth noting, though, that the Baggies face four of the current top five in their closing match-ups, with showdowns against Liverpool, United, Chelsea and Arsenal from Gameweek 34 onwards.

I'll just repost this for the new post.

Doing some data analysis based on the Anewpla website. Interesting stuff when I compare myself to Simon, world number 1.

Got a higher captain score to him 436 - 392 and we're quite similar on points scored by midfielders 5.52 ppg - 5.33 ppg (slightly better) and forwards 5.63 ppg - 6.16 ppg (worse). Not a huge difference though considering you have 4 mids usually and only 3 strikers.

Yet our defensive scores vary significantly and this is what I found hugely surprising. Didn't realise I was so poor at defensive picks. I scored 3.59 ppg whereas he scored a whopping 4.74 ppg which is a massive difference. Clearly something I need to pay more attention to.

It really is insane how well he's done considering he has a fairly low captaincy score and he has benched a massive 276 points (compared to my 141). He's also benched the "wrong" keeper (i.e. scored more out of his 2 GKs) 10 times whereas I've only done so 3 times. N.B. I played Forster every week from GW 4 up until Winter WC so that makes sense.

All of this and I've got a 'lucky' rank in the top 750 and he's a whole 121 points ahead. Well played Simon because, if it's even possible, he's actually underachieving.

Interesting. I've also been known to focus more on being top heavy and neglecting defense but if you have a solid defense that rarely changes it really does work in your favour.
Just so difficult with rotation, team form, and avoiding knee jerk's.

What I posted in the other thread as well was the fact that I had a double-up of Forster + Bertrand from GW 4 til about GW 20 who were getting monster scores so it must have been the rest who have let me down!

Every year the winner (and others close to the top) will have played the game closest to perfect. Because there are such a large number of people playing the game there will always be those near the top whose every move appears to be golden. This is merely a feature of the numbers of players involved.

Not sure that I agree with this. As Beavis post says, he has played certain aspects far better than Simon.

My point is though that he's getting the right players in his team but his captaincy scores and benching decisions are questionable and unspectacular. Yet, he has a 20 point lead and a WC available.

If anything, it just goes to show how far away from perfection we all actually are in this game and how there is so much room for improvement in our decision making.

Could make a good hot topic this. Would be interesting to see where managers of varying ranks have done well/badly. Without running it (on my phone at the moment) I know my captain picks have been horrendous.

Just want to make a point about benched points. If you have chosen really well, you're benched players will score better because they are, well, better than having trash bench fodder.

On the scoutcast Simon was emphasising how he'd kept his team very flexible - which I take to mean having good options from the bench to cover injuries, bad fixtures etc. In that case you might well get more points benched, but also, critically, more points overall.

Basically, I'm not sure that lots of benched points is actually a bad thing as long as the players you pick also do well (which his clearly have).

Yeap, good point as he did say that on the scoutcast. A much deeper analysis would actually be required to see if the money spent in those benched points would have actually increased his total points if he had invested it on his starting XI (i.e. get a better GK or defender, etc.) or if the flexibility allowed him to get these points in the first place.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Gameweek 33-34 strategy.

This is mainly aimed at us poor souls without a wildcard but thought it would be good to gather our updated thoughts on preparing for the Gameweek 33 and 34 blank and double.

Assuming the situation stays the same and only Chelsea and Leicester have a double that week - which players will you get or keep?

How many players are missing from your team in Gameweek 33?

My take on it is that I'm already planning for this and looking to ensure I can field a strong XI in gameweek 33 as well as have three Chelsea players in place for Gwk 34. Hopefully I can do this without a hit, but the Foster injury may force my hand.

      BGW33: Pantilimon and maybe Coutinho
DGW34: Ivan, Hazard. Aguero to Costa is pending move.

If Liverpool get a double in gwk 37 I'd save my wildcard for that week myself. Arsenal and Liverpool players could represent a monster points haul that week.

Its easy to get three Chelsea in if we plan now and Leicester are not worth investing in in my opinion.

I think if Pool go into 37 then GW35 is the week to go, especially if you have ditched or want to swap around your Arsenal cover

Would then be fairly simple to swap one of Kun or Costa for Sturridge for GW37

I'm unsure on Leicester. I may go for Mahrez just because I have the wc so I won't be stuck with him for ages. Not sure about their defenders though

Feel that Liverpool getting a double in GW37 instead of 34 is crucial for those without a wildcard like me. Will be a lot easier to lose City/Chelsea players then to allow Liverpool and Arsenal triple ups.

Just bean looking through Leicesters fixtures, 9 left and only 3 away. West Brom, Burnley and Sunderland. Granted the home fixtures look tough, but, food for thought.....?
Schlupp's the only player of theirs on my radar, but he is on my radar.

Missing Bellerin, Sanchez, Austin and a keeper at the moment. Bellerin can stay on the bench, Sanchez and Austin will become Mane and Costa over GW31-32. Will probably get Schmeichel in goal for GW33. Gives me the Chelsea holy trinity, plus Schmeichel and Schlupp so not so fussed about them. As things stand, retaining Silva and Aguero over GW33-34 looks important.

Will look to have Costa, Ivan, Hazard (latter 2 already owned). Not looking at getting any Leicester players.

Players who have a blank - Bellerin, Austin, Pantilimon. I'll have Myhill to cover Pantilimon and Austin will be making way for Costa.

As long as Liverpool lose/its not put in GW34 it should be easy enough to plan for

I already have Costa, Hazard, and Terry in place and have Sanchez, Panti, and PvA with a GW33 blank. I'm going to use one of my FTs to bring in a GK and might use another to do Sanchez to Silva. I think I'm well set up unless Liverpool get a DGW34 in which case I'll need to take a hit or two.

I'm thinking about using the WC after this GW31 to set up a template for 33 and 34 with 3 Chelsea, 3 Leicester (best fixtures rest of season), 2 Liverpool. Is this too much of a risk considering injuries?

It really depends on the player and the league they come from.

Players from the Spanish league have tended to fit in well (Torres, Michu, Costa, Sanchez), those from Italy tend to take longer (Veron, Lamela, Crespo, Shevchenko).

Also depends on family situation, players already at the club etc.

Steven Gerrard and Diego Costa: Why Were Their Offences Covered Differently?

In the League Cup semi-final vs. Liverpool on 27 January, Chelsea's Diego Costa made a nuisance of himself. (This) culminated in two incidents with Reds defenders Emre Can and Martin Skrtel.

The latter went unpunished. Costa, chasing a ball in the Liverpool box, attempted to hurdle Skrtel's sweeping tackle. When landing, Costa's foot met with the Slovakian—leading many to think the Chelsea striker deliberately made contact. (After review), Jose Mourinho's £32 million forward was not reprimanded for his coming-together with Skrtel, but he was charged by the FA for his interaction with Can.

Costa clattered into Can from behind, making the German fall. Once Can hit the ground, he kicked the ball into play. Costa regained his balance and saw the ball go infield, and when changing directions he stepped on the Liverpool centre-back's lower right leg while propelling himself.

In real time there looked to be nothing in the action, but when slowed down, it could be argued that Costa purposely placed his boot on Can. The FA saw merit in the slow-motion footage and handed the Spanish forward a three-match ban, which he contested and lost.

Despite the ambiguous nature of both challenges, papers the following day gave Costa no sympathy nor (any) benefit of the doubt. Headlines were "Costa's Shame" from the Star, "Stampford Bridge" from the Mirror, "Headcase" from the Mail, "Dirty Diego" from The Sun and "Costa Crimes" from the Telegraph.

Only Costa knew concretely whether he maliciously stepped on Can and/or Skrtel—as the way they happened could be interpreted as possible missteps—but the incidents were framed (in the press) in such a manner that no punishment would have (seemed) criminal in itself.

The Chelsea striker's narrative was set from his 2014 summer arrival. Whenever Costa does something even remotely close to controversial, there are clicks to be had, papers to be sold and money to be made by framing the story in its most visceral light. Costa is not the first footballer to have this predicament in England (see Luis Suarez, Mario Balotelli, etc.) nor will he be the last. (The papers) have a never-ending storyline.

You see (the) contrast only when similar incidents happen that have no ambiguous nature. One such occurrence happened when Liverpool hosted Manchester United.

Coming on at half-time for an injured Adam Lallana, Steven Gerrard was not even on the pitch for one minute before he was red carded by Martin Atkinson for stamping on Ander Herrera.

Immediately following Liverpool's 2-1 loss, Gerrard issued (an) apology, both privately and publicly to his team-mates and to the Reds supporters for his "moment of stupidity". The same papers who (had) lambasted Costa wore relative kid gloves with Gerrard.

Headlines were "I'm Sorry" from the Star, "I'm So Sorry" from the Mirror, "I'm Sorry" from the Mail and "Gerro: All My Fault" from The Sun. Whether Blue, Red or somewhere in-between, you must admit there is a stark difference in the way Gerrard's stamp and Costa's steps were covered.

The reason (for this is that) blasting Liverpool's captain serves no real purpose (for the media). To publicly stone (an English player) after his funereal (apology), regardless of (the clear) evidence, would appear callous, mean-spirited and unbecoming. Costa—whether true or false—has an aura of arrogance and recklessness about him, which makes thrashing him an easier, more (popular) task.

On its face, this seems unfair.

Were Costa to have English mastered, it is possible he could have defended himself better in the immediate aftermath of the League Cup semi-final, rather than waiting four days to have his story with Jason Burt of the Telegraph published. Chelsea's striker told the Telegraph: "I can go to sleep knowing that I’ve not done anything wrong, because I never meant to [step on Can]."

After 96 hours, however, the die was cast and Costa's ban (completed rather expeditiously) was already in effect. The moral of our story: if honesty is the best policy, so is hiring an exceptional public relations manager.

Gerrard, knowing the likely outcome, (apologised) ahead of the impending firestorm. A savvy move: to be (seen to be) accountable for his actions, especially when the evidence can be clearly interpreted.

Costa is THE player in the league that has the referees on his side.. He and Chelsea should be thanking them for not getting a red card against Liverpool in the league cup.

I've only watched Costa in 20-30 games this season, but in 80% of those games Costa should on average have 2 yellow cards and 1 red card per game

you could pair him with Davis from 33 you would get

sto, TOT/sto, sun, lei, LEI+ars, mci

only the last game that is maybe an issue

For those asking about Costa, he has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 Hamstring Strain.

"Grade 1 Hamstring Strain: With a grade 1 hamstring strain you may have tightness in back of the thigh but will be able to walk normally. You will be aware of some hamstring discomfort and unable to run at full speed. There will be mild swelling and spasm. Bending your knee against resistance is unlikely to reproduce much pain."

"Hamstring Strain Recovery Times: Grade 1 - 1 to 3 weeks."

    Source: Physio Works

The Stoke game comes 15 days after the injury took place. Given Costa's history with hamstring problems I wouldn't expect him to be risked, although Mourinho's press conference in 10 days time will provide more information on that. More likely he returns for QPR in GW32.

If Costa misses the Stoke game that offers the additional advantage to Chelsea that he cannot reach the 10 yellow card threshold before it increases to 15 on 13th April

The odds of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million - donkeys kill more people annually than planes. The fact that it's big news shows how rare it is.

Yes of course, but it doesn't change the fact that you're in a long tin can with 2-3 rockets on the outside, with no control of the situation and if anything goes wrong you're fked..

And what's the chance of dieing while driving a car in a western country like Norway if you are not drunk, not speeding, not texting while driving etc? Can't be that much higher and you're at least in control..

I know it's bigger chance in a car, I'm just giving you a glimpse into my scared irrational brain when it comes to planes!

So it's probably about 1 fatality per 100,000 if you're not speeding, texting, DUI, trying to take suicide etc, that was my point.. that it's not as big difference as the statistics say IF you drive normally.. if that makes sense

            1. Doolittle

              9 years, 1 month ago

1 in 100,000 is a massive difference to 1 in 11 million!!! And in a car, it's not just about you driving normally - it's about other people doing the same.

True that.. it's just the totality of a crash when you're in a plane.. you're never nervous flying? Might not help that I live in northern Norway and routinely have to fly in tiny 10-20 passenger planes in storms!
