The Remy Conundrum

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is often little help to Fantasy managers when delivering his weekly press conference. Who can blame him though, us Fantasy managers are hardly his priority. But with places in our attack ahead of the double Gameweek 34 involving Chelsea and Liverpool at a premium, every word from Mourinho’s lips is dissected and looked over in a bid to help us make up our minds. This article lays out Mourinho’s latest thoughts on Diego Costa’s injury and more importantly whether it is worth Fantasy managers drafting in the Spaniard’s likely replacement in the starting XI Loic Remy.

In recent weeks we have heard Mourinho say that he ‘owes’ Remy game time. This gives great cause for optimism and allows us to make a fair assumption that Remy will be awarded much game time in the absence of the 19-goal  Costa. Now for those worrying about the threat of Didier Drogba to Remy’s gametime, I want to remind you that Remy is very versatile when it comes to playing in attack and many times he has been shifted to, or played as a part of the attacking midfield three, playing both as a CAM and a  RM. Therefore, I wouldn’t think his game time will be too much of problem.

Today’s press conference however offered both a crumb of comfort that Costa will remain absent throughout Gameweek 34, while at the same time offer enough ambiguity to place doubts in Fantasy managers’ minds that Remy will play both matches.

In case you missed it, Mourinho said that he expects Costa to play four games, five at most, between now and the end of the season. This means that either Mourinho plays him selectively (meaning he is more likely to start in the big games against Liverpool and Arsenal) or he just plays the last four games of the season.

Either way, I think Remy is worthy of investment.  The striker is in great form with two goals in his last two games and I fully expect him to start the next two games while Costa recovers from injury.

Regarding the double Gameweek even if Mourinho’s four games are not necessarily the last of the season then I feel that we can still safely expect Remy to start in the easier of the two games, against Leicester, a game which gives us very high hopes for solid scores from Chelsea attackers.

Remy will also be likely to at least feature from the bench against Arsenal, the double Gameweek’s second fixture. As we know even from the bench he is capable of accruing points. In three out of five of his substitute appearances he has delivered attacking returns. However, should Costa not return until  Gameweek 35 then Remy is surely a certain starter in both double Gameweek clashes.

Now I know, many reading this will be keen to transfer out  Charlie Austin or Christian Benteke, who both have a blank in Gameweek 33,  for the safer options of Swansea’s Befatami Gomis and Crystal Palace’s Glenn Murray, but let me put forward the case against these moves.  Gomis faces Everton, a side that have conceded one goal in the last three, then a Leicester side firmly in the midst of a relegation battle that will be looking the gain valuable points against the Swans.

Meanwhile, Murray faces a Sunderland side who seem much stronger defensively since the appointment of Dick Advocaat, followed by a game against West Brom, a side more than capable of shutting out opponents. Also, neither Murray or Gomis have a double Gameweek, which places the pendulum firmly back in Remy’s favour.

The choice is yours but I feel Remy offers the best chance of tapping into further points from Chelsea’s double Gameweek as well as strong potential for further goals this Gameweek and next.

You've convinced me. Austin to Remy done.*

*Although as listeners to the Scoutcast will know I'd actually made my mind up to do this on Monday - but your article gives me comfort I've made the right move.

ah but what this article doesn't take into account is wc holders

"Also, neither Murray or Gomis have a double Gameweek, which places the pendulum firmly back in Remy’s favour"

fine, but if you have a wc to get Remy for DGW anyway, is it that simple?

If you have a WC then sure, take a punt on someone, but for those less fortunate, its something to think about.

Well yes, obviously those with a wildcard have more choice. But the gist I got from the article was that Remy was the pick of the bunch anyway.

Thankfully not one for me to worry about - I decided on the Terry/Ivan route last week. Just hoping Chelsea start tightening up and get the set pieces working and that Ivan gets a bit further forward than last week.

I think Chelsea will tighten up with Costa out, JT implied as much on Chelsea TV a few days ago.

In any case they are pretty tight, just have been a bit unlucky with clean sheets. Stoke had 2 shots on target in the whole game last week and one was a 65 yard wonder goal. That won't happen every week.

Hope so - plus these two offer a real attacking threat and nailed-on ness...

I think that's definitely one of the two best routes into maximising Chelsea points over the coming weeks in Costa's absence. None of the mids apart from Hazard appeal as much as a defensive double up or getting Remy in.

Yes - Fab has dropped deeper and Oscar has tailed off. Willian and Matic seem pretty nailed but are not Fantasy options. I'm actually glad I don't have the Remy poser as he is quality - well recall him and Townsend earning me some good QPR points a while back, the goal he got v Wigan was amazing.

    Excellent points. Very persuasive.

For me it comes down to Aguero. I see Sturridge as more important than Remy for the DGW, and Kane is going no where. So for a Remy slot to open up, Aguero needs to continue to under-perform...

        GWs 34 and 35 Kane has sot,MCI

can see some merit to losing Kane, then shipping Sturridge back to him for GW36

Very tempted. Aguero Sturridge Remy could kill that week.

Thanks for this.. It has helped my resolve and I think will help many others still deliberating.

I think if I had no WC I would be more certain of this move but even with my WC it is still arguably the best move for me. If he doesn't work out, I will reshuffle in time for DGW34. Many others will have selected him so I don't expect to lose out much and I may even benefit from his value increasing in the short term.

Here's to a striker with something to prove and a few goals to pick with ex team mates!

Is Drogba not a concern for you? Drogs has started some games earlier in the season even when Remy was available, vs spurs etc, Remy will rarely complete 90

He has an on going ankle complaint, so can play but unlikely that he'll be risked too much.

Doesn't seem like Remy can play 90 mins. I'd be very doubtful he gets more than 150 in a DGW. And he's not raking in bonus either. Seems like a real waste of a Chelsea spot to me.

I dont understand this. If Remy loses his spot us without a WC are stuck with a non playing Chelsea player and needs major team surgery to get three Chelsea players.

Great article and very helpful! Even if Costa does come back for double gw 34 Remi offers alot of potential and solves lineup issues for the next 2 gameweeks. PKWRONA you just saved me a lot of headaches.. 🙂

This article seems very biased to me, no offence. I was expecting you to look at proof and then make up your mind, but it looks like you first made up your mind and then fit the facts around it.

"The striker is in great form with two goals in his last two games" I dont agree with statements like that for example. 'great' form in two games?

I was going to get Remy regardless anyway, and I do completely agree with the first 4 paragraphs of your write-up.

So what's everyone's feeling on this captain conundrum: Kane at home vs Villa, or Hazard away to QPR?

I'd say that if you have both hazard and remy, captain to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket as you already have most Chelsea points covered. But if you don't have Remy then I'd captain hazard.

This maybe needs an update now.
With drogba performance I reckon remy is more likely to start all games
