The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 33 – The Defence

With Gameweek 32 put to bed following Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Newcastle, we’re rolling out the first of our Watchlist articles, which offer player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks. With double Gameweek 34 around the corner, Thibaut Courtois and Kasper Schmeichel jump up the goalkeeper rankings, while three home matches in the next four see Leighton Baines move into prominence.

GOALKEEPERS

Southampton’s Kelvin Davis retains his spot at the top of our rankings, with the 4.5-priced keeper offering terrific value in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The Saints stalwart has kept shut-outs in both his appearances at St Mary’s since replacing the injured Fraser Forster, and while four of Ronald Koeman’s side next six (sto, TOT, sun, lei, AVL, mci) are on the road, given the south coast club have conceded just 12 goals on their travels this season – the least in the league- Davis looks a strong pick for the rest of the campaign.

Tim Howard leaps up a couple of places by virtue of Everton’s favourable upcoming schedule (BUR, MUN, avl, SUN, whm, TOT). The four home matches look particularly appealing, given the Toffees have registered shut-outs in four of their last five league encounters at Goodison Park, making the 5.1-rated Howard a viable option between the sticks.

After registering a clean sheet in the 1-0 win at QPR, and with double Gameweek 34 (ars/lei) around the corner, Thibaut Courtois jumps up a couple of places in our latest refresh. The 5.9-valued Belgian will have his work cut out keeping a red-hot United attack quiet on Saturday, given they’ve scored 12 goals in their last four matches. With home matches against Crystal Palace and Sunderland in the next six, though, along with a trip to West Brom, Courtois – the cheapest option amongst Chelsea’s defence – looks worthy of serious consideration.

While Leicester have only managed one clean sheet in their last ten league matches, they have the most favourable fixtures (SWA, bur/CHE, NEW, SOT, sun, QPR) for the rest of the season, according to our Season Ticker. At 4.4 in FPL, Kasper Schmeichel looks a genuine option, then, and could help create funds for premium Chelsea and Liverpool options ahead of double Gameweek 34.

With no fixture in Gameweek 33, Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet drops slightly in our ladder. A kind schedule thereafter (wba/hul, QPR, che, CPL, sto), including that double in Gameweek 34, make the 5.9-priced Belgian international a real contender for one of our three Liverpool slots, with the Reds having kept clean sheets in three of their last five matches.

Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski falls a few places in our latest update, with Garry Monk’s side only registering two shut-outs in their last nine league encounters. Neil Taylor’s two-match suspension and Kyle Naughton’s season-ending ankle injury won’t help the 5.4-valued keeper’s prospects of improving on that record, while a tough end to the season (ars, MCI, cpl) suggests there are better options for the season’s climax.

Owners of West Ham defensive assets will have been left seething after Marko Arnautovic’s last-gasp equaliser on Saturday. Nonetheless, a favourable run-in (qpr, BUR, avl, EVE, new) following this weekend’s trip to the Etihad means Adrian remains in our thoughts for the upcoming period. Safely ensconced in mid-table, there are concerns over the Hammers’ motivation, given they’ve won just one of their last ten league matches, but for those who own the former Real Betis keeper, using a valuable transfer looks unnecessary.

Joe Hart keeps his place in our latest rankings due to City’s home defensive form. The champions have chalked up a clean sheet in each of the last three in front of their own fans and now have four favourable Etihad encounters (WHM, AVL, QPR, SOT) in the final six. Although the 6.1-rated keeper is an expensive luxury, given City’s struggles away from home, the England No.1 could still be set to benefit from home comforts.

Another keeper falling due to a blank this week is Arsenal’s David Ospina. The Gunners also face leaders Chelsea in Gameweek 34, but with the fixtures then easing up (hul, SWA, mun/SUN, WBA), including that double in Gameweek 37, the 4.9-priced Colombia international could come into the equation for one of our three Arsenal slots.

Tom Heaton returns to our thoughts after a long absence, with Burnley’s fixtures (eve, LEI, whm, hul, STO, avl) for the remainder of the season among the most favourable, according to our Season Ticker. The Clarets have kept impressive clean sheets against City and Tottenham in recent weeks, so the 4.6-valued Heaton offers a decent option for the final few weeks of the season.

DEFENDERS

Another shut-out in the 1-0 win against QPR further reaffirmed Branislav Ivanovic’s spot at the summit of the FPL defender standings. The 7.6-rated Serbian is now the sixth highest scoring player across all positions this season, and with a decent run of fixtures (MUN, ars/lei, CPL, LIV, wba, SUN) until the end of the season, including the double next week, looks primed to add to the impressive 155 points tallied so far this term.

Having averaged 5.1 points per appearance over Southampton’s last six matches since returning from suspension, Ryan Bertrand keeps his place in our latest refresh. The Saints upcoming schedule (sto, TOT, sun, lei, AVL, mci) offers hope of the 5.9-priced defender maintaining that average.

Leighton Baines moves up to third in our rankings, having led all defenders for chances created (nine) over the last four Gameweeks. With Everton more resolute at the back in the last four, only conceding twice, the potential offered by the England international at both ends of the pitch makes him worthy of consideration given the Toffees run-in (BUR, MUN, avl, SUN, whm, TOT) – that’s if you aren’t deterred by the lofty 7.0 price tag in FPL.

Leicester’s Jeffrey Schlupp drops a place this time around, but the 4.5-valued defender is still a strong Fantasy prospect given the Foxes favourable fixture list (SWA, bur/CHE, NEW, SOT, sun, QPR). Despite starting at left-back in the last two, he’s ended both matches as a wing-back due a mid-match tactical tweaks and has still chalked up five goal attempts in the last four Gameweeks, joint fourth among defenders. Schlupp has also delivered 15 crosses in the same period, more than the likes of Ivanovic and Bertrand.

While Toby Alderweireld doesn’t offer the attacking potential of his Southampton team-mate Bertrand, coming in at just 4.8 in FPL, the Belgian does offer outstanding value. Part of a Saints rearguard that has kept a league high 15 shut-outs this season, the defender on-loan from Atletico Madrid is definitely one of the best budget defenders available for the remainder of the season.

With West Ham in the midst of a kind run of fixtures (mci, qpr, BUR, avl, EVE, new), Aaron Cresswell provided a timely reminder of his attacking potential with a goal in the 1-1 draw against Stoke. With two strikes and four assists in his debut season in the Premier League, the 5.6-rated defender has consistently shown a desire to get forward from his left-back berth and is another who offers potential at either end of the pitch.

Scott Dann keeps his place in our latest update, having led all defenders for goal attempts (eight) over the last six Gameweeks. Palace have only kept one clean sheet in 12 matches since Alan Pardew took over, with a clear emphasis on scoring goals proving detrimental at the back, but the 4.9-priced defender’s ability from set-pieces marks him out as a defender worth considering.

Another defender who offers a threat from set-pieces is Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel, who returns to the Watchlist having served a three-match ban. Now down to 5.9 in FPL, the Slovakian should come into our thoughts ahead of double Gameweek 34 (wba/hul), with the Reds having registered clean sheets in their last six away matches with Skrtel in the starting XI. A pretty favourable schedule thereafter (QPR, che, CPL, sto) makes the former Zenit Saint Petersburg defender an enticing prospect for the season’s finale.

With more chances created (19) over the last eight Gameweeks than any other defender, Kieran Trippier sees his stock rise this week. That period incredibly saw Burnley face all of the current top eight, so the easier forthcoming schedule (eve, LEI, whm, hul, STO, avl) should give the 4.8-valued defender a chance of improving further on those impressive stats, and adding to his four assists far.

Stoke’s Philipp Wollscheid is a non-mover this time around, with four home matches (SOT, SUN, TOT, LIV), along with trips to Swansea and Burnley in the next six. The Potters have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four matches and have little to play for, finding themselves sat in mid-table, but coming in at just 4.4 in FPL, Wollscheid looks a solid budget option.

With a trip to Southampton and home clash against City in the next three, Danny Rose jumps back up a few places. The Tottenham rearguard has looked anything but secure in recent months, conceding 15 goals in their last eight league matches as their season stutters to a halt. Rose’s attacking threat, which has seen him produced nine goal attemptsand as many key passes over that period, keeps him in the reckoning.

Having shrugged off a groin problem to keep his place in the starting XI in the 1-0 win against Burnley, Laurent Koscielny returns to the Watchlist. The France international looks the most certain starter among the Arsenal back four, with Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal battling the likes of the fit-again Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and Kieran Gibbs for starting berths. With three goals this season, the 6.0-valued defender could come into our thoughts from Gameweek 35, given the Gunners favourable run-in (hul, SWA, mun/SUN, WBA).

Our ladder is completed by budget defenders Patrick van Aanholt and Craig Dawson. The Sunderland left-back has delivered some impressive stats since compatriot Dick Advocaat took the reigns at the Stadium of Light, registering five shots and creating as many chances in just three outings. The 4.1-valued defender picked up his fifth assist of the season against Palace and could be worth looking at further down the line, bearing in mind that the Black Cats have a double (LEI/ars) in Gameweek 37. Dawson’s stock has fallen, given West Brom have shipped seven goals at home to QPR and Leicester in recent weeks, and their run-in is unfavourable (cpl, LIV, mun, new, CHE, ars). With two goals this season and a strong threat at set-pieces, the 4.5-priced defender may yet bring in the points.

Tough one, Eriksen has easier game but Fabregas in better form, you pick, no need to wait if you have faith in Fabregas this week. I have both but will get rid of Eriksen next week for Liverpool player

  7. The merits of wild carding in GW35
    Zasa
    • 9 Years

WCers, has anyone considered the merits of a WC Gw35? I think there is a strong case for doing so, and one reason being the fixtures for the top sides that GW.

Arsenal (hul) / Liverpool (QPR) / ManCity (tot) / ManUnited (WBA) / Chelsea (CRY) / Saints (sun).

Looks very much like a probable high scoring GW considering the defensive opposition faced. Looking at the upside of this strategy, you could comfortably (and to your advantage IMO), load up on your triple Arsenal quota with the WC with ease. While the majority of the players after the DGW will be scrambling for their second and/or third Arsenal players for their DGW, a player WCing Gw35 could in theory exploit that by using their remaining transfers on punts for the remainder of the season (or the like). Or simply have differentials in their teams

Also to factor in, are the teams that top the season ticker Gw35 onward. Some of them being teams which will be likely blindsided by Gw34 WCers and non-WCers alike, seeing as most will be focused on packing their team with Gw34 DGW assets with an eye towards easing their transition to Gw37 storing/benching Arsenal assets. Their could be some vulnerabilities in the top10k template to exploit after the majority WC Gw34 (non-WCers as well) and their priorities lay elsewhere. Adjusting your team accordingly with good differentials and taking the best performing players form the template, could prove to be a great way to beat the top10k average score significantly for the last GW's of the season.

Just wanted to make a shortlist of teams with players which might have some fantasy potential to invest in Gw35 onward. Some could be great differentials to close off the season IMO, your possibly romanticized Conor Wickham's if you will of 2015. Who knows 😯 .

    - Newcastle (lei, WBA, qpr, WHM): Janmaat, Cisse - back GW 36.
    - West Ham (BUR, avl, EVE, new): Sakho, Valencia, Downing, Cresswell.
    - Everton (avl, SUN, whm, TOT): Baines, Coleman, Lukaku (I know), Lennon.
    - Southampton: (sun, lei, AVL, mci): Defender double could be a good stealth differential, Mane.
    - Burnley (whm, hul, STO, avl): Based on the relegation do-or-die theory, some attackers (which will hopefully show some form soon) may be worth it for the Hull and Aston Villa matches alone.
    - Aston Villa (EVE, WHM, sot, BUR): Benteke. Grealish perhaps as well. Same theory as above.
    - Man United (WBA, cpl, ARS, hul): Usual suspects, their defense may be worth a look though.
    - Sunderland: Many have their defenders, but their attack could be a good differential as a one-week choice for their DGW Gw37 (LEI/ars). Defoe, Larsson.

Obviously a downside to this route is that for the short term (these next 2 GW's) you'd be on the same boat as non-WCers, having to squeak by this upcoming GW relying on your Boyds or less than ideal 4th/5th defenders for an XI (generally speaking, based on the top 10k template). The advantage one would have with the WC Gw34 -- and the most popular option -- is the ability to punt and put out a better XI than most this GW, with the luxury to pick out players with good fixtures for one week. If said punts pay off, it could see your rank move up drastically (assuming this will be a low scoring GW for the top10k/1000 average like Gw27).

Then with the WC Gw34, it could be a great final blow to deal where many out of position will be taking hits to get their three Chelsea and Liverpool players quota or possibly an extra hit for a Leicester/Hull player. If Leicester deliver on both ends, we could be seeing a grand win for the WC Gw34 as many are planning on bringing 8, 9, or even 10 WCers to maximize their potential upside. In a span of 2 GW's, the ceiling could be massive for those that exploit it properly.
(33% of the top10k took hits for DGW Gw28 FWIW)

Another advantage the WC has for Gw34, is the scope a player has for their DGW picks. Any game-changing news for that week, or a confirmation for a DGW player's game time could be significant. There could always be the possibility of injury for a a popular DGW pick, leaving players w/o a WC to opt for a hit out of necessity.

What are your thoughts on the WC? Do you find it best for your team to WC Gw34, and will you maximize your team with DGW assets? If you could field three Liverpool and Chelsea players without hits, would you be tempted by WCing Gw35?

Nice Article Zasa ...... but no,no no... 🙂
In fairness I couldn't not play my wc in 34 as that's the way I planned it but I've done a gw35 team and it's 2 players out from my gw34 team. It means I have 9 dgwers & not the 10 I had originally planned but Hull are no loss.
Finally ditched the Ospina plan as I really want Ramsey, Sanchez & Giroud for the run in. Leaves me ManC lite but it's not wriiten in stone... yet.
      But nice article.

        Cheers, Gnu 😀 .
Yeah, I can definitely empathize with the WC that GW. I agree, Hull players really have little too no appeal. Maybe N'Doye, but he's showed poor form these past weeks.

No Ospina? Who do you fancy instead? I think Davis is also a great pick if you can cover his Gw38 fixture well (mci). Would say Gw34 is a difficult fixture (TOT), but Spurs have been a shadow of their former selves in attack, largely down to taking Dembele out of the equation IMO.

Yeah, the triple Arsenal attack does look great, have just been so precise going forward. Could score 5 goal with ease vs Sunderland.

        Thanks mate 🙂

Schmeichal & Ospina looked likely but going with 3 outfield Arses leaves me with a choice of keeping Krul or Davis, Panti (DGW) or Heaton.

Ospina can pick up 12 - 14 pts best in DGW, Ramsey, Sanchez & Giroud could all do that against Sunderland alone so better chance of return in my book.

Do a wc GW35 & see how many transfers you would do for Gw34 if that was the following week - you know, reverse the fixtures - I found that helped me choose my WC34 team. (I think).

Yeah, I can see the appeal of Davies with his kinder price.

Hmm, I see the logic there for sure. Sort of hedging your bets there for there games since all three have the ability to produce double-digits scores.

I like the sound of that, will do, and thanks for cracking some eggs of wisdom mate.

I don't have a WC, but, if I did, I would seriously be looking at playing it in GW35. That is the time when, as a nonWC, I am wanting to make the most transfers; in particular, loading up on the Arsenal triumvirate of Rambo, Sanchez and Giroud once the get past their blank and che fixtures and embark on that enticing run of fixtures. I think using the WC to fix your team after you've over-invested in DGW assets is better than using it to over-invest in DGW assets and then being stuck with them.

Thanks for the input, yeah, I think if someone were in the position to field three Liverpool and Chelsea players for free for their DGW, then it'd definitely an alternative to consider. I agree, getting those Arsenal players for their kid run, is definitely a great route to take your team after the Dgw34.

Judging form the lack of responses here, I'm assuming either A, people with WC's are not in that position or B, this may be a bit too left-field right now.

A very nice article..and quite possibly..post of the year for it's originality, depth and train of thought and out-of-the-box thinking. I see some have already talked down your ideas which really leaves a lot to be desired imo.

I hadn't thought about 35 but after this, i'm now giving it some serious thought. I like you ideas and the way you develop them. We need more posters like you..and recommend you for Scoutdom.

I was set on playing my WC in 34. But now, I'm giving your idea soem serious thought. What bugs me about 34 is this:

      - every Jo Smo will have the same CHS and Liverpud players
      - HULL are a waste of time
      - LEI have truly awful fixtures and the single gwk players could quite easily out score them

Yes, I like this idea a lot. Tempted.

Wow, thanks for the kind words Jafalad. Really appreciate it, and yes not many are considering this alternative sadly, though I'm glad someone found this little rant useful!

I also share your concerns about Gw34 and where it leaves my team after the DGW. If you could put out 3x Chelsea and Pool with no problems for the DGW, and don't fancy Leicester, than WC-ing Gw35 is definitely a good route to take for your side IMO.

        😀

    A) Mignolet, Skrtel, Sterling, Fabregas (double LIV def, double CHE mid)
    B) Terry, Skrtel, Sterling, Coutinho/Henderson (double CHE def, double LIV mid)

Keep Giroud. Sturridge and Remy are the only alternatives really and they don't seem like sure fire picks anymore. Besides its a good opportunity to switch up your Arsenal midfield cover. You might decide that you'd rather have Ramsey than Sanchez and pocket 3m.

          so basically

            Nope, it's basically

Play Boyd this week and save, then get in Hendo and Mignolet next week

Mane -> Bolasie this week, then Hendo and Mignolet in next week for -4

for what it's worth, Mane > Bolasie was my move this week (did it on Sunday? can't remember) and am tempted by the same pair, but I'll be on WC so I don't have the hit hanging overhead 🙄

Hmm yeah. It's not that I am against a hit, it's just I'm weighing up whether Bolasie will outscore Boyd this week and Siggy next week by more than 4 points (in total)

                Do you think he will?

So, with Cazorla due to rise in price tonight, I have a decision to make on whether to take the £0.1m hit and wait until the Friday pressers before making my moves, or make my transfers tonight.

With 2FT and my WC to use next week, Cazorla and Naughton are certainties to go, but who for? And might there be reason to take a hit?

    A) Naughton > Baines
    Cazorla > Bolasie/Puncheon/Lennon for free

    B) Naughton > Baines
    Cazorla > Fabregas
    Remy > Murray for -4

Obviously Fabregas is not possible in A whilst I still have Remy as my 3rd Chelsea

Hey guys, advice on this team would be much appreciated. Tempted to play without a keeper and go for 2 outfield transfers to field 11. Let me know of your thoughts.

    Foster* - Pants*

    Cyne - Terry - Zouma
    Hazard - cork - eriksen - siggy
    Aguero (C) - Kane - Giroud*

    Sanchez* - Hutton* - PVA*

    1 FT

WC next week so i'm thinking of some 1 week punts are

    1) Sanchez > Silva
    2) Hutton > Baines
    3) Foster > Howard

Cheers mate, I don't know what to make of it to be honest. My take on it was that he was reprimanded by Koeman already by getting subbed off early. Highly doubt Koeman would bench him IMO, their best goal scorer and threat by far. They'll need his pace to trouble the Stoke centre-backs IMO.

From what I've seen on fan forums, nearly everyone is in agreement he'll start for sure. Also, Koeman is pretty straight forward in press conferences, he'll hopefully clear up the situation. Will be interesting to see how Saints play w/o Wanyama for now, may are saying Alderweireld may play DM with Morgan 😯

Its a possibility. He did there before if I recall correctly. Cork was out then too though right?

You may be right with the reprimanding already from being subbed off. When is the presser? Hopefully Thursday. Need to get it before Team UAE deadline submission 😆
