This Much We Know – Gameweek 36

With just this evening’s match at the Emirates left in the Gameweek, we look back at the lessons learned over the weekend. Sunderland’s upturn in form under Dick Advocaat, Steven Gerrard’s momentum in his final Premier League season and Jose Mourinho’s rotation intentions are all on our lunchtime menu.

Gerrard’s determined to go out with a bang…
The Reds skipper denied Chelsea a win and clean sheet in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at the Bridge to get amongst the goals for the second successive Gameweek. Sparingly used by Brendan Rodgers over the last few months, Gerrard looks certain to start the final two fixtures of his last season in the top-flight and proving a decent differential for the run-in. Upcoming clashes against Palace (one clean sheet in 16 under Alan Pardew )and Stoke’s dodgy defences (one clean sheet in eight) hands him the chance to draw down the curtain in style.

Sunderland have the battle to beat the drop..
A trip to in-form Everton looked a real test of the Black Cats’ mettle. The Toffees had racked up four straight clean sheets in front of their own fans prior to the weekend but Dick Advocaat’s side picked the perfect time to register back-to-back wins for the first time this term, boosting their prospects ahead of the double Gameweek. A clean sheet, allied with goals from Jermain Defoe and Danny Graham, highlighted their potential at both ends of the pitch, whilst Jordi Gomez earned points for the second successive Gameweek to strengthen his claim in the centre of the park.

Sherwood’s getting the best out of Cleverley..
The on-loan midfielder is proving an unlikely hero as Villa continue their ascent up the table. Whilst Christian Benteke has understandably garnered much of our recent attention, Cleverley has notched for three successive league outings to place the midlands output on the cusp of survival. Bearing in mind Cleverley had failed to score prior to Gameweek 34, and had netted three times in the previous three seasons, Tim Sherwood’s decision to utilise him in a more advanced berth underlines the Villa manager’s tactical acumen.

Pearson may have found his ideal set-up…
After what seems like months of tactical tweaks, the Foxes manager has finally found a system to accommodate all of his main men. Pearson’s subtle switch to 3-4-1-2 against Newcastle last weekend allowed Riyad Mahrez his first start (behind the front two) since Gameweek 29, and whilst the Algerian drew a blank against the Magpies, he more than atoned for that on Saturday by racking up a 16-point haul against travel-sick Southampton, courtesy of two goals and maximum bonus. Providing Leicester can secure their survival, a central support role could bring Mahrez onto many radars next term if his manager keeps faith in the current set-up.

Forster’s loss can hurt the Saints…
After conceding twice in each of the previous three, Kelvin Davis dropped to the bench as Ronald Koeman handed Paulo Gazzaniga his first start of the season. The Argentine was unable to make a difference, though, as Southampton once again shipped two goals as their campaign stumbles to a halt. Bearing in mind the St Mary’s outfit conceded more than a single goal just four times in the opening 30 Gameweeks with Fraser Forster between the posts, it’s fair to say the former Celtic man’s season-ending injury has proven disastrous to their defensive prospects.

Pulis is happy to grind out the results…
A trip to Newcastle seemed the perfect opportunity to go on the attack and cement his side’s survival in style. Instead, the Baggies boss was happy to once again roll out a 4-5-1 and drop Saido Berahino to the bench at St James’ Park, with lone striker Victor Anichebe vindicating his manager’s decision by bagging the goal that ultimately clinched top-flight football for another season. With showdowns against Chelsea and Arsenal remaining, Pulis seems likely to retain his current set-up, with Berahino and fellow forward Brown Ideye falling down the pecking order as the campaign comes to a close.

Adam deserves a regular role..
Handed a mere five starts in the first 27 Gameweeks, the Scot was a peripheral figure for the Potters. Tellingly, although Adam scored just twice over that period, both his strikes arrived when named in the first XI and it’s fair to say that his eye for goal has flourished since finding his way back into Mark Hughes’ first-team plans. Adam has started eight of the last nine Gameweeks and has netted four times over that period, with a weekend strike against Tottenham his third in the last four Gameweeks. Certainly, once Bojan is fit and available next season, Adam will struggle to retain the role in “the hole” but his impact could well convince his manager to find his a place further back in the Stoke XI.

Aguero will be impossible to avoid next season…
Chased all the way by Harry Kane for the Golden Boot, the City striker has shown his class over the last month or so. Whilst Kane’s bid to end as the league’s top scorer fell short as Tottenham’s campaign tailed off in disappointing style, Aguero’s relentless quest for goals took him to second in the overall FPL standings with a devastating 23-point haul against whipping boys QPR yesterday. Now in the midst of his most prolific campaign for the Etihad club, Aguero has shown that, when fielded as a lone forward, he is peerless amongst the current crop of forwards in terms of consistency of returns. When the new player lists are released in July, finding a place for Aguero will surely remain a priority for many Fantasy managers.

…whilst Mata’s claim is strengthened by spot-kicks …
After Robin van Persie fluffed his lines against West Brom last week, Louis van Gaal put his faith in the Spaniard for the trip to Crystal Palace. Mata immediately benefitted from his role as United’s new spot-kick taker to fire home his ninth strike of the season. Looking at the stats, Mata has averaged 4.8 points per in the 25 matches he’s started for the Red Devils – a figure that drops to 4.3 when you factor in his six sub appearances. If the Spaniard retains his starting role next term and keeps ahead of the queue for penalties, he could earn a place amongst the big-hitters once again.

Jose will rotate…
Having made five alterations to his starting line-up yesterday, the Chelsea manager conceded he would have changed more had Petr Cech not been ruled out with a minor neck injury. Mourinho’s post-match comments ahead of the West Brom match lays bare his intentions to hand a number of young players a starting berth at the Hawthorns – a scenario which may persuade some to ship out the likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas next weekend to balance our budgets for Arsenal’s double. Those who choose to go down that route should also be aware that Mourinho has confirmed he will turn to his regulars again for the final match of the season at home to Sunderland, as Chelsea look to finish the campaign as the only side unbeaten at home in England’s four divisions.

    Pant
    Terry, Clyne, Schlupp
    Haz, Silva, Hendo, Cazorla
    Kun, Austin, Kane

    subs Krul, C.Dawson, Hutton, Boyd

    2FT's, 0.9 ITB

Team values only 101.8, but am defended big leads in both of my mini leagues (79 and 87 points).
Need to bring in two Gooners,

    A) Hendo and,Kun to Sanchez and Giroud
    B) Clyne and Haz to Kos and Sanchez
    C) Austin, Haz, Clyne to Sanchez, Giroud and 3.9 or less defender (which) for a hit
    D) Austin, Haz, Terry to Sanchez, Giroud and 4.8 or less defender (which) for a hit

      B looks best to me.

A looks kinda crazy as Aguero has shown the damage he can inflict if you don't have him.

Yup, A was the plan until Kun hit form. Haz rotation worries me as well, but so does not having Giroud

Things to remember for next season

I like to make a list of all the things that I've learned this season so I don't make the same mistakes next season!

    - Start the season with Ivanovic!
    - Remember how good Aguero really is!
    - Never pick a Liverpool player, they always let you down
    - Play it safe, don't make rash transfers

    What are some of yours?

If you bring in a player for a set of fixtures and first hurdle blanks, stay the course. You wanted him for more than that game.

Constantly transferring of defenders limits options badly if injuries strike

Always remember that a lead can be caught eventually, it doesn't need to be done with one massive week

This isn't what I've learnt, but what I'm going with:

      - Don't take too many punts at the beginning of the season, pick mainly players who have played in the league before.

      - Don't go for defender rotation, go for three players who are solid defensively and pick up two others who cover them when they have difficult fixtures.

I said mainly players. Certain big players find it easy to fit straight in. Other players coming in don't find it so easy. Altidore, Bojan, Lamela, van Wolfswinkle etc, weren't good picks. So it's best to stay clear and see how it goes for them.

I got off to a bad start this season largely as a result of not having Siggy, Costa, Fabregas and Sterling in my initial squad. Most experienced FPL managers had at least three of these in their initial squads, so I should have done too.

But the RMT tool advised me to select other players instead, so what I have learned is to take more notice of other sources of information and less of the RMT tool!

As you say, there are a few players that are of proven quality even though they might be new to the Premier League (not many, but a few), and you can lose out if you don't own them from the start.

The thing is your strategy may not have been wrong and if the same games had been played again a totally different outcome might have been the result and it may have validated your strategy over the others. Personally I went with double Chelsea defence and Hazard for my Chelsea quota from the start and over the season it was probably the best way to go but because of results and the improbable/unsustainable conversion rates of Costa and Fabregas early on it cost me quite dear. One cs in the first 5 gws (20%) and 3 in the first 11 gws (27%) was much lower than their season average of 47%. If they had hit anywhere near their season average I think my strategy would have proven the more rewarding than those going with Costa and the overpriced holding midfielder that was Fabregas.

The thing with football is it is not predictable and all we can do is go with what we think has the best odds of success. The best odds however don't always win hence the reason why bookies make so much money off football.

I started with only 2 Chelsea players (Hazard and Terry), which was probably too few, then replaced them with Costa and Ivanovic in GW4. I made my first two GW4 transfers (to bring in Sterling and Ivanovic) too early in the international break, which was definitely a mistake since I was then hit by injuries to Sturridge and Phil Jones and had to make two further transfers for an 8 point hit. If I had delayed my transfers that game-week, I could have kept Terry and Hazard and just replaced Sturridge and Phil Jones with Costa and another defender instead, no hit being required. But Costa should really have been in my initial squad instead of Sturridge, who was even more over-priced.

I consider Fabregas, like Yaya and Ramsey last season, to be the attacking member of the midfield double pivot, not just simply a holding midfielder - but I must admit that my ranking improved significantly after I realised in about GW15 that my squad would be better balanced without the popular but expensive Costa.

Looking at the initial squads of other members of the Top 10k Any Season League, it was very noticeable that the vast majority of them started with 3 of the players I mentioned (and also with Mata and either Dzeko or Jovetic) and with a cheaper defence than mine. And so did Triggerlips, so following the advice in his blog certainly turned out to be a more successful strategy than relying on the FFS RMT tool in this instance, and I probably didn't give myself the best odds.

One thing that it does suggest is that going with Terry, Ivanovic and Hazard as your Chelsea trio could have been an excellent strategy.

Don't agree on Point 1. So many examples of players that done really well on their first season in EPL.
        - Actually I'd advise the opposite. Whoever picked Michu on his first season in EPL knows what I'm talking about.
        - Why not going for rotation? 2 big hitters and 3-way rotation or 1 big hitter and 2 x 2-way rotation are hard to flaw.

And there's so many examples of players who haven't done well in their first season. Certain players will start off with a bang, but the more punts you start off with, the more likely some of those would fail.

            I agree with Sarj here.

The more punts you start with the more transfers you waste (or wildcard) early on to put your team right when you could just be bringing in the best players for the next gw based on performances in the current season. In my experience it is better to be a week late on one or two players than a season early on 5 or 6 imported punts.

I tend go for the big gambles up front, a solid mid and forward line but a budget defence and keepers, with nothing on bench (4m non-playing bench warmers. 4m non playing keeper).
My GW1 frontline Costa/Sturridge/Rooney/Fab/Ramsey/Sterling, with hutton, wisdom, chambers in defence. It all went pear-shaped after a couple of injuries.
I think need to rein it in slightly.

In short, i need more balance. maybe dare i say it something slightly more templatey

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 12 months ago

I think one important element is to ask yourself 2 questions before starting to plan:

        1. Which high ownership player(s) are most likely to perform less well in the coming couple of months, whether because of injuries, fixtures or changes of position?

        2. Which team(s) and/or player(s) do you think are likely to improve in the 2nd half of the season?

From what I saw this season a lot of FPL managers use the January wildcard to create a team for the 1st half of the season rather than the 2nd half. That's my take anyway.

I wildcarded in GW3 just because Aguero was coming back from injury! Well that and I started off really bad....

But yeah if Aguero is fit he's in.

I've definitely been a bit more patient this season. If I really can't decide what to do then quite a lot of the time I've just done nothing, gotten myself 2 transfers for next GW and re-assessed.

Not sure who forgot how good Aguero is but anyone who did had some harsh lessons recently

Avoiding players based on the team they play for isn't advisable. Pick players on form is good advice. The issue with Liverpool players recently is that they've all been crap for most of the season and a double game week wasn't likely to change this. Suarez played for Liverpool last season and was a reasonably good pick to say the least.

Simple one for me in my rookie season so far, don't ferk around with the armband. (i.e not captaining Kane Gw28, Gw30, and Aguero Gw36). Cost me around 40-50 or so points in total as my captain blanked in those weeks with me trying to be smart, definitely ruined my chance at the top 10k it seems. 🙁

Structure is very important alright as you need flexibility in those opening gw's. If you team is too punty or too top heavy in def, mid or fwd departments then you can be forced into either excessive hits or wasting your wc too early.

I'm only going from one season's serious play but I think I learnt this:

      - Form over fixtures for attacking players, to a certain extent, unless you're talking about an on-form Charlie Adam playing Chelsea, vs an off-form Hazard playing Sunderland (if they survive).

      - Have a team structure which allows manoeuvrability - that probably means a bit of fodder here and there but not too much. It's risky buying a 7.5m midfielder at the beginning of the season if there aren't many options of a similar value if he flops - there isn't a Siggy every year to drop down to. Think about price brackets and options when you assemble a squad.

      - Don't cheap out on your defence too much. One premium or two mid price (5-5.5) wouldn't go amiss. And check their rotation for the early part of the season - you don't want to be spending unnecessary transfers on 4.5 defenders.

      - Aguero, Aguero, Aguero. And probably some Hazard too.

      1. Lucy.

Oh and a BALANCED squad. I don't care if you can squeeze in Aguero, Costa and Rooney. You're probably missing out elsewhere and hits may become inevitable.

Dont be sniffy about picking players from weaker sides if they're showing form.

Two things I've learned on Aguero:

1: He IS capable of playing a full part in a season with the way they are now managing his fitness. He was Sturridge-esque last season with his constant injury frustrations.

2: The formation Aguero is playing in is soo important to his returns. As soon as Bony came on the last day he switched to a more deeper and wider role. If this is to be his role next season I won't be going near him.

It's a rumour based on the fact that Mourinho has said he's going to play some youngsters and that some of his big players have played too many games and that they will be back for the last match. Doesn't sound too good for him does it ?

None necessary, save and do some punts last GW.

Not seen it but West Brom will sit behind the ball anyway, if you want to get rid of him you can but I wouldn't advise it unless Jose says something more specific than he usually does.

Doing Bertrand->Koscielny next week. My defence will be Ivan-Kos-xxx. Have Moreno, Wollscheid and Naughton, but none of them plays! So selling Moreno or Wollscheid, who do I get for a -4 for either 4,5 or 5,4 (depends on who I sell of Wollscheid and Moreno)
