Team of the Season – Harry Kane

It’s fair to say that Harry Kane’s rapid and unforeseen rise to prominence was a sight to behold for Fantasy managers. Initially pitched at a 5.0 price point in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the youngster evolved into a lethal marksman under Mauricio Pochettino, affording us extraordinary value in a quite remarkable breakthrough campaign.

The Statistics

Kane had to settle for cameo roles in the first 10 Gameweeks of the season, with manager Mauricio Pochettino preferring Emmanuel Adebayor in the lone striker berth. After netting seven goals in six Europa League ties, Kane emerged from the bench to fire a late winner in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Aston Villa in early November, establishing himself as a permanent fixture in Pochettino’s first-team from that point onwards.

The Walthamstow lad took time to generate momentum, though- having dropped to 4.8 in FPL, he notched just one goal and an assist in his first five starts as he slowly found his feet in the top-flight. Then the fireworks begun, sparking a run of 15 starts in which Kane recorded just three blanks and tallied 17 goals and 14 assists. This astonishing burst of form brought about a meteoric rise in value to 6.4 by Gameweek 31, with the greatest volume of new owners (nearly 550,000) hitching a ride on the bandwagon in the wake of his 18-point haul against Chelsea on New Years’ Day – a match which, ironically, many owners benched him for.

Kane’s only real downturn in form arrived in the final quarter of the campaign, in which he mustered just two goals and one assist in the final eight Gameweeks as the hectic schedule started to take its toll. Despite shedding over 200,000 owners in the final five rounds of fixtures, Kane still ended the season with the highest ownership (45%) of any player in the FPL game, by virtue of his unparalleled output per unit investment.

In his first Premier League campaign as a starter, Kane finished second in the scoring charts (21 goals), behind Sergio Aguero’s 26. In addition, a total of 191 points saw him end up joint-fourth alongside David Silva, with only Aguero bettering his score amongst forwards. In the Spurs camp, Christian Eriksen (162) came closest to the English international’s tally, with Nacer Chadli (160) pushing the Dane in bronze medal position.

Averaging 5.6 points per appearance, Kane led the league with regards to appearances in the FPL Dream Team (seven) – a feat no doubt aided by his five braces and hat-trick, giving rise to seven 10+ points hauls. Moreover, only Hazard (42) was awarded more bonus points than Kane (32) throughout the season –again, all the more impressive given he failed to start a match until Gameweek 11.

The Prospects

Although the curtains have been drawn on the domestic campaign, Kane can’t afford to reflect on his recent successes just yet. Following Spurs’ pair of post-season friendlies against Malaysia XI and Sydney FC, the burgeoning star is set to participate in the European Under 21 Championship, which takes place in the Czech Republic. The tournament is scheduled between June 17–30, which could disrupt Kane’s pre-season preparations if the Three Lions progress to the latter stages. Pochettino recently suggested his first-choice frontman could miss the start of next term if such an event transpires, given that he’ll need to be afforded ample rest after featuring in 51 league and cup matches in 2014/15.

In light of last season’s exploits, it goes without saying that Kane’s value is set to rise substantially across the Fantasy games. Certainly, it seems debatable as to whether he’ll be elevated into the premium bracket after less than a year as a starter for Spurs, though there’d be no surprise if he comes in around 8.5 to 9.5 in FPL when the Player Price Lists are issued next month.

Nonetheless, bearing in mind that Kane averaged 6.3 points per start last season, Fantasy managers will remain confident he can still represent strong value. Even with a price hike on the horizon, Kane’s fixture-proof appeal, allied with spot-kick duties and consistency of returns (producing points in 16 of his 28 starts) will still make him a must-have for many, providing he doesn’t succumb to burn-out after such a hectic breakout season.

Certainly, with the inconsistent Eriksen managing a goal and two assists in the final 15 Gameweeks and Chadli still seemingly prone to his manager’s rotational whims, Kane will surely remain the most popular option at White Hart Lane for the campaign ahead.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who will be the next Kane?

Will one of the cheep strikers at the promoted sides emerge? Or is there a likely cheap attacking gem among the established team's ranks?

There is always a gem striker from the promoted sides that offer good value.

      Holt, Jrod, Austin.

Yep, it's getting the right one though.

Also was thinking of the likes of Carroll at Newcastle when he emerged as an incredible option for a budget price.

            Lambert was another.

It helps if they are on penalties. Any of the new boys on set pieces?

Jerome shirley not? Deeney? Wilson also not?

Kane is hardly going to happen every season, a 5.0 striker starting for a top-6 club is frankly unimaginable, that too with the Kane level of consistency.

From the promoted sides, maybe Troy Deeney will do well, but I do not see anybody of the Charlie Austin quality, honestly.

Not the next Kane, but if he plays Bony could be the new Tevez. He's a proven goalscorer and if it's 4-4-2 he'll be the one to benefit despite a massive price difference to Aguero.

Covered above but when aguero goes to Real Madrid, Bony will suddenly become the "new Kane" both in ownership, potential and actual points.

Class striker and if suddenly pushed into the main striker of the top scoring team in the league then unavoidable fantasy wise for price circa 8-9m.

      95% live team ownership.

Granted a couple Ifs and buts but all highly possible.

Yeah I agree with this. A striker in a top 6 team for 5-6mill playing 90 minutes each gameweek and scoring 190+ points is really rare, but I think those three can get decent points over a season and be good players for 3rd striker spot in the team.

Your latest blog post only really applies for retaining a good overall position once you've gained it.

If you look at the history of people in the top 1000 you'll see the vast majority where within the top 100k and then top 50k fairly early in the season. From that point on, doing what you typed up makes sense, but, it's a lot harder to get up there in the first place than to drop out of the top areas.

You still often need that key bit of luck, e.g. owning tadic and aguero in the week they contribute towards a 100 point+ score to put you up high in the first place

No, nothing wrong with that indeed, but there's still distance from Austin's ppg to that of Kane (especially if you only count from the day that Kane became a starter, as nobody would have had him before it), and that's what Doolittle is saying. It is unlikely that some 5.0 forward would end up scoring 5.6ppg over 34 matches, let alone 6.3ppg over 28 last matches of the season.

There's the potential for the exact same scenario to happen again this year - a secondary striker who only gets a run out in the Europa League hits a vein of Thursday night form, with the main striker(s) failing to impress a new manager, so he gives the new Kane a shot in the league and it's a win all round.

Question is - who's it going to happen for? West Ham, potentially? Maybe Liverpool if Sturidge remains out? Surely not Southampton?

Depends what you mean. If we are talking about a youth striker coming through at a top 8 team to score 20 goals, there almost certainly won't be one.

If we are talking about a forward at 6.0 or less that can perform well as a 3rd striker there will probably be one or two of those. But Kane was a rarity.

Its both really - cheap striker who racks up huge Fantasy scores. He is a rarity but not a one off. Andy Carroll's breakthrough season at Newcastle and Jay Rodriguez's emergence at Southampton showed that it can happen from time to time.

J-Rod is one people mention but I have very little recall about him as I wasn't playing FPL at the time.

I think a West Ham striker could be good value early on (depending on the new manager) as they should hit the ground running in the PL after an early start with EL. Also we'll have a better idea about their 1st choice XI in GW1 than for other teams. I'll cover that in the West Ham article when I get there.

Age is a non issue, but you're describing Kane wrongly in your second paragraph. That's more like Austin.

Kane was a 5.0 priced 2nd highest scoring forward, 4th highest scoring of all players.

That, I doubt, will happen again. Even if the player was 33-year-old (and even less in that case).

I'm not too in the know on the promoted teams, but judging from the lot this year. I put my money on Cisse really coming to his own next season (when fit of course). Hopefully a nice pre-season for De Jong will form a nice chemistry between them both. Cisse boasted one of the best goals per minute ratio in the league this season, if undisturbed on the injury side of things, he's certainly one of the proven goal scorers around and if he comes at 6-7.0m he may prove to be good value for what he offers IMO. Also to take note are his credits when it comes to having that crucial and proven ability to score braces/hat-tricks.

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley chooses Everton over Aston Villa as midfielder leaves on free transfer

could he get into their starting XI?

I think so. They lack strength in depth in central midfield, especially with Barry getting on a bit.

I agree. McCarthy obviously a starter but Cleverley can play instead of Barry or Besic or even alongside them in a 3 for more difficult games.

Barry, McCarthy & Barkley played in 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 which Everton used for majority of PL games with Barkley as a attacking mid..

looks Cleverly is more of a rotation risk for Barry/Besic.. no?

His signings were rubbish from day 1. McCarthy and Lukaku are the good ones but both overpriced. The Barry/Luka loan deals cost north of 10m for the 1 season alone

I like McCarthy and the jury is still out on Besic for me but yeah the rest have been poor. I can't say I'm a fan of Lukaku at the mo, it's a big season for him coming up I think.

He shouldn't, McCarthy is a much better player, and I'd have Besic in the holding midfield position - he's really impressed me when given the chance. I presume Martinez has bought him to start though, I just don't think he should.

I think the most likely scenario is that he's a replacement for Barry and as its a free transfer, well beggars can't be choosers.

I presume it's for Barry too, but is Cleverley really someone who can do the same job? Having Barry was vital for us last season, and while he's clearly past it, I thought we'd be looking at the same type of player. Cleverley being there does not fill me with confidence, Besic seems a better bet.

Think Juve midfielders a better option than Barca. Defenders depends which way you think it'll go, can easily go 4 at the back. Strikers MSN is obvious but again depending what you think the score will be, Tevez is also an option.

        Morata a bargain too.

Even if there's goals I think a 4-3-3 may be the way to go - Alves, Alba and even Evra offer more attacking potential than a slightly more expensive midfielder.

When he signed for Spurs, several US pundits warned that his defensive game needed a lot of work. So I expected at least one more season before he becomes a first team regular. Sounds like he's doing well on tour, but as one of the commenters on that article notes, so did Lewis Holtby last pre-season and he was immediately sold.

I think Milner is due to become Pool's highest earner, £165,000 a week. Will be a good player for Pool.

Skrtel however has had a falling out with the club over his contact offer.

"It's unacceptable for me," Skrtel said regarding the Reds' offer in an interview with Slovakian website Akualne.

"I think that contracts like this are offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems.

"The contract which has been offered to me is unacceptable, so I did not sign it. I have one year left and there has been some speculation about the interest from other clubs. We will see what happens."

depends if he is nailed though

not sure Siggy is worth it unless Swansea sign a striker...

Hendo is best option from those as he is most nailed on and has pens and a lot of free kicks.

Crying while flicking through old photos of George Boyd and Charlie Austin, knowing that they've found a new league, a different companion. You know that you're better, you're the Premier League, the top dog. You think you've got it all; the money, the reputation, you're a great catch. Then, suddenly, they're in the arms of another. You know this new one is a fad, an inferior option, but you have to wait it out, hoping that they'll return.

      Come back Georgie, come back.

“Firstly, Gareth Bale is an outstanding player,” Moyes said. “I was desperate to take him to United from Tottenham, but couldn’t quite get him. He had his heart set on going to Madrid.

“He was very much on my radar as soon as I went to United."

Things could have been very different for Moyes has he somehow managed to get him and Herrera.

    Cech:

Asked whether he had played his last game for the Premier League champions, he said: "I don't know.

"I will fly back now and join the national team. Then when the season is over I will weigh up my options and decide.

"I won't think about it now. When the decision is made I will tell you.

"At the moment it's all just speculation. I'm not even thinking about it.

They've got some good trade relations with PSG, though, so maybe there, unless they get Lloris. PSG sure will, or at least should, make moves on GK market, and there are not too many top ones available. It's really just Casillas, Cech and Lloris.

Won't they keep Sirigu as number 1? He's an Italian international, not much better now Buffon is getting on.

            • 10 Years

I wouldn't keep him, at least, and there have been talks that they want Lloris or Cech, so guess they've noticed that he's the weak link in the team, too. Sirigu sure is better than when he came to Paris, when he would hardly ever leave his line and just relied on his reflexes, but his control of the box still is quite weak and it often shows in big matches that he just doesn't have that level, he is not the kind of GK that Cech, Neuer or Casillas are, the type who is going to save you when you are about to fall.

In short, he is good, but not good enough if you want to win CL. You can do that without a GK who is a great shot stopper, say, Valdes at Barcelona, but that relies on a specific style of play and definitely a GK who does whole a lot of other things than stops shots, e.g. Valdes playing sweeper, which might be the type PSG really needs, but Sirigu is very much opposite of that, his participation to game is negligible apart from his saves, and he's not the best saver either.

In addition, as you said, he's an Italy international, so he should be relatively easy to sell and they would get decent money from transfer. More than they would have to pay for Cech and not much less than they would pay for Lloris.

Hmmm... I think he's still got it, in fact. But it's true that he's getting quite old, and seen that Lloris and Cech both are available, PSG should have the edge to get either one of them.

May be wrong, but I've understood they're interested in Cech and Lloris, so that suggest they want better, and see above: I think they should have someone better. Sirigu is bit second row really.

You have to get rid of that Liverpool/ManU mentality thinking that "oh, it's a foreign club not called Real or Barca, someone like Sirigu is good enough for them though we wouldn't want him" and realize that it's a big fecking club with ambition to be the best in the world. Sirigu is a big time hindrance in that.

Ok. I wouldn't say I don't rate him at all either, just that I rate him good enough for a high mid-table club that plays a relatively defensive brand of football, which is exactly not what PSG is. I agree with the GK who, when Sirigu had played one season at PSG, noted that he can't understand what the dude does there as he never leaves his goal line, and while he has upped his game since, his participation in the play and control of the box are steal relatively weak, especially for playing for a possession obsessed team playing with a very high defence line. They really need a sweeper-keeper type, Lloris would be absolutely perfect, and he's also better stopper than Sirigu.

but would the likes of HIguain have wanted to join Liverpool? Benteke at £32mil? Falcao wasn't great last season and Mandzukic has had a poor season too by his standards.

Mandzukic had a very decent season at Atletico, for his standards, so there seems to be an internal error in your argument.

12 league goals isnt what i'd class as decent and contradicts what you said about him yesterday. He doesn't suit Atletico's style and nor would he at Liverpool. Hindsight is great though isn't it

I wonder how "12 goals" contradicts anything I said yesterday?

Back to Mandzukic's season at Atletico, notice your words "by his standards".

                        League+CL, Mandzukic:

                        0.55 goals/90min for Atletico
                        0.67 goals/90min for Bayern
                        0.43 goals/90min for Wolfsburg

                        League only:

                        0.57 for Atletico
                        0.78 for Bayern
                        0.43 for Wolfsburg

As it is likely that Bayern actually scores more goals than these other two teams anyway, let's see domestic goals/game average last 5 seasons:

                        Atletico 1.7
                        Bayern 2.4
                        Wolfsburg 1.6

Assuming that goals in CL would be negligible or at least only favorise Bayern even more (and it would actually take work and time to get that data), this can be verified, and thus his g90 to team g90 ratio is:

                        0.32 at Atletico
                        0.28 at Bayern
                        0,27 at Wolfsburg

                        And for league goals only:

                        0.34 for Atletico
                        0.33 for Bayern
                        0.27 for Wolfsburg

So by his standards, he had a fine season scoring wise, and your argument "12 league goals is not what I'd class decent" rests only on that. Especially if you take into account also CL goals, which are at least as, if not more, important for judging how well he has done, his form has showed no dip, but in fact has improved since moving to Atletico.

Who was to know that Falcao would melt down so spectacularly? Regardless, there were multiple proven strikers available and a pot load of money to spend. They could have easily bought quality even if the biggest names snubbed them.

Falcao's wages were too high. don't think he was ever an option really

and finishing 2nd in the league isn't really going to attract the world biggest stars. Also Rodgers isn't a big enough name to attract the 'marquee' signings.

He should never have let Suarez leave.

I feel as though you don't get my point. You don't have to "attract the worlds biggest stars" to buy quality. Big names have become big flops. Balotelli wasn't even a raging success the first time around in England. Lambert was clearly nowhere near the required quality. Origi was never going to sustain them in the short term, and still might not given his form.

and had we signed Falcao and he flopped like he did at Utd, then people would criticise.

Probably so. But Falcao had a chance of working out, although the injury seems to have broken him. Balotelli had only ever had mixed success at best and Lambert was not CL quality

Nothing is 'free' in the world of football 😛

With all his bonuses and stuff I'm sure he still cost a pretty penny for a 29-year-old on £150,000 a week.

Sure his wages come to around £6.5mil a year 😕

who would have replaced Suarez with? There were not many options available, still aren't really.

BR had stated he would not make one big signing, but instead use the money to buy a squad (this backfired as he and LFC bought, more the most part, the wrong players for his system)

the point being there is not anyone I can think of who could replace Suarez that was available to buy.

Benteke was pretty good and that for an absolutely shocking team. Rémy did not fail his medical. He has a heart defect that was diagnosed years before the Liverpool medical and Liverpool was aware of that before bidding for him and he was examined by specialists not only for Liverpool, but before that for Marseille, Newcastle, QPR, FIFA World Cup and after that for Chelsea, and given green light by all of them. Why on earth they ended up saying no to him is a mystery, but he failed nothing in that particular medical.

        2 good options,

don't know much about Martinez if he was approached or available,,

but would have been hard to compete for Costa against Chelsea and not sure he would work in Liverpool system.

Fair enough nobody was going to be available AS good as Suarez, but ask yourself were there better options than the following?

Using an aging Ricky Lambert in a rotation system with the inconsistent and liable Balotelli and the injury-prone Daniel Sturridge 😕

Spending £16mil and £4mil with a combined £130,000 wages isn't good enough imo

        1. djenzio
          • 9 Years

he spent more than that on the squad.

the idea was not to buy a like for like replacement but to use the money to build a squad which would be needed with the addition of CL football

I am not saying he was successful. I am saying he made it clear they would not use the Suarez money to buy a marquee signing, but build a squad.

Remy or Bony would have been great. But the truth is there are a serious lack of strikers at the moment, especially ones that are available and LFC can't compete in the wages department.

It will be interesting to see who stays and who goes but our squad is decent enough and very young, I am still hopefully of a promising season next year, not expecting us to title challenge or anything but I do see promise in the squad we have

Bony, Griezmann and a defensive midfielder and we would have finished in the top 4. Can't believe we spent 120m without signing a quality DM or ready made striker like Bony. Ah well. Milner is a good start at least. Not a BR fan, but want him to prove me wrong this season for sure.

I don't remember what happened with Bony if we approached him or if he was even considered? Can't believe City got him over us. Very silly.

Lucas and Can not enough as DM?

Bony had a release clause of 19m at the time and the club/BR didn't want to match it, from what I remember.

I think we need a DM. A Wanyama type. Emre Can will be great though. Lucas may be sold sadly 🙁

            Milner is a good signing

19m clause? didn't know that, thought there was an actual reason we didn't sign in.

We need a DM if Lucas goes, which I really hope doesn't happen. He is an amazing player and is now our longest serving playing with Gerrard gone.

Our defence this season was pretty good, the most important element we need is goals. gerrard was our top scorer, now he is gone. I can't say how we are going score goals next seasons if we don't sign a proven goalscorer.

not mad on Dzeko myself. He does know where the net is though but not sure he is 20+ goals in him a season

I think Balotelli was a last resort. He was a poor signing, but Lovren and Lallana (arguably) are worse signings for me.

I think Dzeko is brilliant. He is capable of 20 a season. If we can have Dzeko and Sturridge fit across 32-35 then I think we'd get back into the top 4, if we sign a RCB too though. Skrtel seems to be unhappy and I would be open to moving him on. It's the last summer LFC can make money on him and Howedes is available for 12m€

A top striker costs 35m+. A top striker signs for a CL team. A top striker wants to play for a top manager.

Milner is a top professional. You'd presume that the wage structure may have been adjusted a bit, to sign players with more quality.

Unfortunately those top strikers were simply too hard to get. Not everyone wanted to play for Liverpool and not every team was prepared to sell their top striker. Essentially Rodgers had to make do with what little choices he had. See Champs comments regarding the committee

He's i know and perhaps it's a little unfair....bit the point is that the top European clubs are struggling to either want, or need, our premiership top performers...including the top one.

Right now I think maybe only DDG is an out and out must have for the European top clubs with Hazard, Aguero and Sterling as may he's...It's not a lot.

Would they break it up? Probably not. But if they had bought Kun instead of Suarez or Neymar I'd wager he'd be performing similar. But I agree with the overall sentiment.

If that was true, we wouldn't all have crashed out of Europe so soon in recent years. Barcelona and Madrid in particular, as well as Bayern and even Juventus, are miles ahead. I don't think a single Chelsea player, bar Courtois and maybe Terry, would get in Barcelona's side.

Agreed. I find it almost laughable that Man City, given the money they have spent in recent years, finished the season with Lampard and Milner lining up for them. Not that there's anything wrong with those two as players of their kind but it's a bit "where did all that money go"...

also it's a pretty silly reason to want Aguero to leave the FPL.

It would make our teams harder to pick...which is a good thing. Aguero at one point this season hit well over 90% ownership and well over 80% captained him...and it was only his injury that reduced it.

If Aguero stays fit the captain choice this season could be a right old yawn fest.

You might be OK, Doos. People on here always fear the worst for last season's stars in the new pricing. Ramsey and Hazard were quite kindly priced last season despite being monsters the season before.

That's exactly what they do. Benteke 9m, Cisse 9m, Carroll 9.5 or 10m (albeit after transfer to Pool). Sturridge to some extent as well.

He's a prolific goal scorer for one of the top teams, he'll be very dear.

I know they're not exactly 'elite' prices, but they were for the clubs they were playing for.

I don't call 9m the elite bracket 🙂 I set the cutoff at double figures.

That's why I think 9-9.5. And Sturridge had several years of Premier League goal-scoring before he got double figure pricing.

            See above 😉

Yeah, but that's usually because they take a few years to reach that level of goal scoring. Had Kane even started for Spurs before a few months into this season? He's had one season and he's scored ridiculously will in like 30 starts. Most other players have a lower level of production that's potentially the norm.

              See above too 😉

FPL seem to exercise caution with regards to repeatability. Kane did exceptionally well in a six month spell but can he do it again? I'm not saying he can't, but until he does, FPL won't consider him elite.
