The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Pardew’s Palace

In our latest article for members, we analyse the revival of Crystal Palace under Alan Pardew.

Arriving from Newcastle midway through the campaign, the former Eagles player steered his side to tenth spot in the table with a series of attacking displays that transformed their fortunes in the final third.

We sift through the season data to assess just how Pardew’s tenure impacted on the performance of the Palace squad, focusing on their output in terms of creativity and goal threat as we seek to identify would-be targets for the new campaign.

Everton and West Ham "Janus" Appraisal

Here's the next draft article, as usual all comments (especially from those that know the clubs well) will be welcome and will be taken into account when revising. And as before, please skip over if you don't want to read a long post.

    EVERTON AND WEST HAM

Next we turn to two clubs that will be very interesting for fantasy football purposes next season - Everton and West Ham. Both reached 47 PL points but finished in very different ways - Everton with 6 wins in their last 10 games after finally exiting the Europa League (EL), West Ham with 2 wins in their last 10 games after it became apparent that Sam Allardyce was, in effect, a "dead man walking" as the Irons' manager.

The Europa League is an interesting element in reviewing both teams. Participation in the EL has been demonstrated to damage the PL performance of many teams (see previous articles) and it certainly seemed to affect Everton last season. They went from a team that had finished the 2013/14 season in 5th place with 72 points to one that struggled for much of the 2014/15 season and only reached 11th place by virtue of their strong late run. Goals for and against also suffered as will be covered later on. But in 2015/16 they are free of the EL effect - will they rebound to something nearer their 2013/14 form?

West Ham, on the other hand, have EL to contend with in the coming season, although as they have to pre-qualify they will actually be up and running before other teams and that can be an advantage at the start of the PL season as Guy Demel's recent article discusses. They also have a new manager, Slaven Bilic, a one time Hammers favourite during his playing days. So there are a number of variables involved in assessing what to expect from West Ham in the coming season.

Bilic was very successful as Croatia manager from 2006-2012, achieving a 65% win ratio and qualifying them for Euro 2008 and 2012. After a less successful year at Lokomotiv Moscow, he also did fairly well at Besiktas (2013-15, 53% win ratio). Man management is often cited as one of his key strengths but tactically it is hard to be sure what to expect - he often utilised a 4-4-2 with Croatia but favoured 4-2-3-1 with Besiktas. An emphasis on good wing play seems to be a consistent feature in how he approaches building teams however.

    THE DEFENCE

Everton's poor season (50 goals conceded compared to 39 in 2013/14) was reflected in lower FPL returns for most of their main defensive assets. We can therefore probably expect lower starting valuations in the main next season - possibly Leighton Baines 6.5m, Seamus Coleman 6.0m, Phil Jagielka 6.0m, John Stones 5.0m. Baines may not offer the returns of old now he has surrendered penalty duties but still has excellent creative stats (assist potential). Coleman is also capable of offering value at that kind of price if Everton get nearer to their 2013/14 form and he can continue to produce the open play attacking threat that he has in the past.

The value pick of the Everton defenders is likely to be Stones, however. His price should be realistic after an injury disrupted season whilst Everton's late season defensive improvement seemed to coincide with his return to the team. However an alternative could be Tim Howard in goal - Roberto Martinez has expressed an intention to stick with Howard and his deputy Joel Robles and it wouldn't be surprising to see them make a 9.5 combo (5.0m and 4.5m) after a lower scoring season last time.

For West Ham it is tricky to predict what effect Bilic will have on their defensive shape, though as a good centre back himself in his playing days one could imagine his coaching having a beneficial effect on players like James Tomkins, James Collins and Winston Reid. However, at this stage the three most likely looking West Ham defenders would seem to be GK Adrian Castillo, CB Tomkins and LB Aaron Cresswell.

Thanks in part to 3 penalty saves, Adrian had a very good season with 142 FPL points despite West Ham's in and out form. He'd seem to be due a price rise, however, and it would be surprising to see him valued below 5.5m. Cresswell had good attacking stats (though not at the level of Baines or Coleman) and a share of freekicks. But it's also questionable how good value he'll be at a predicted 5.5m. Possibly the cute West Ham defensive pick could be Tomkins - he missed a large chunk of last season through a shoulder dislocation that required surgery but looked a big threat at set pieces and at a probable 5.0m (possibly even 4.5m) he could be one for the shortlist if nailing a spot in Bilic's lineup.

    THE MIDFIELD

The West Ham midfield looks short of fantasy options right now and will likely be added to in the summer. Pedro Obiang (a defensive minded centre midfielder from Sampdoria) has already signed and reports suggest that Alex Song's loan may be made permanent. Given Bilic's preference for speedy and tricky wingers it would not be surprising to see at least one of those arrive as well.

At this stage, the obvious midfielder of interest for fantasy managers will be Stewart Downing, West Ham's top FPL scorer with 160 points. He had excellent creative stats and did his best work by far in the first half of the season when mainly played in the #10 role - 116 of his FPL points came before mid-January and he only added 44 more from Jan 31st onwards when mostly playing wider. A player of proven FPL pedigree, much will depend on how Bilic decides to use him next season - if given the #10 role in a 4-2-3-1 he could be a worthwhile option at a likely 7.0 or so, if used as a winger perhaps less so.

For Everton there would appear to be more options, though none of them convincing. Kevin Mirallas had by far the best stats (especially for shooting) but was used sparingly and may not remain at the club. Ross Barkley disappointed after his break out season in 2013/14, though a price fall to around 6.0 could gain him some support. Tom Cleverley is a talented player that did well towards the end of his loan spell at Villa but it remains to be seen how Martinez will use him. Added to these uncertainties is Martinez' disposition to rotate his midfield selection although there may be less need for that next season with no EL to contend with.

    STRIKERS

Romelu Lukaku was an enigma for FPL managers. He actually scored more goals (20) than he did in 2013/14 (16) but less of them in the PL (10 compared to 15 the previous season). His PL creation and shooting stats were significantly behind similarly priced strikers such as Olivier Giroud but in the EL his stats were significantly better than Giroud's level. Weaker opposition, maybe, but teams like Wolfsburg, Lille and Dinamo Kiev are no slouches. He talks about wanting a move to a "bigger club" (or his agent does) and then says that time is on his side in his career and he's happy at Everton.

There is little doubt that Lukaku has the tools - his seasons on loan at WBA and Everton (2013/14) demonstrated that. He's also a striker that appears to score goals in bunches. It's quite conceivable that his valuation could fall next season (8.0m perhaps) and with him it's probably a matter of catching him at the right time.

For West Ham, there are three contenders to look at as it stands - Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia and Andy Carroll. Sakho leads amongst these three on all the significant stats and produced a creditable return of 98 FPL points considering he spent around half the season absent through injury. Unlikely to be priced much above 6.0m, he could be a very live "3rd striker" option if fit and firing next season.

Andy Carroll has so bad an injury record that he's hard to consider seriously as a fantasy option. But Enner Valencia could be wise to make a note of. Big Sam played him wide much of the time, not in the central striker role Valencia considers as his primary position and in which he has scored 11 goals in 19 games for Ecuador. Given a run by Bilic upfront, he could well be a surprise performer next season and offer great value at a probable price around 6.0m.

For me it's his starting price. He has penalties too right? That's worth it.
Aguero Lukaku Austin (both 8m) would set the rest of the team up nicely

Not sure on the penalties front. Still no idea why Baines stopped taking them in all honesty. And since then I think Mirallas, Barkley and Lukaku have all took them but the first two missed theirs. Penalty duty would make him a definite at 8.0 though, that would make 15 goals for the season a minimum you'd have thought.

First half of the season he didn't do anything wrong. The form was good, great position in the table, but most importantly it seems - they were playing a good brand of football.

Second half of the season, things went downhill fast, the football was poor and they were one of the worst form team in the league. Personally, I feel they needed a change.

What, like they've always played like Barcelona? That isn't what I was saying if that's what you mean...

It's just the owners more than anyone wanted improved football, first half of the season there were definitely improvements. Second half it went back to what I would call the "West Ham way" - with Kevin Nolan playing off the striker. 😆

I don't think that's fair really. After Xmas there were injury problems and then an awful run of fixtures. By the time they were through that it was clear West Ham were getting rid. They had fantastic fixtures at the back end but couldn't take advantage because it was all over and even Big Sam was just playing out time.

His face didn't fit. That's the long and the short of it.

A fair assessment Ruth. The Chelsea away game marked a severe lack of motivation during the second half of the season with survival assured. Allardyce probably knew he was on his way out for quite a while. I'm a bit nervous about this season with Bilic being a bit of an unknown quantity. My feeling is that Downing will not be played in the hole where he clearly was more affective last season. The right full back position is up for grabs should Jenkinson not be signed on a permanent basis. I think a new full back will be signed as O'Brien and Demel are not good enough.

I'm not sure whether Sakho can keep up his impressive strike rate either but here's hoping...

What exactly do you disagree with then? Because you've even said yourself that he was just playing out time, after I'd already stated myself that I feel it was time to get rid and switch things up....

Anyhow, they were in fantastic form in the first half of the season. Do you think the owners were contemplating sacking him at the mid-way point? Not a chance. They were hugely overachieving!

Then in the second half of the season, things went completely stale, in every sense. LLLWLDLDWLLL was their end of season form, complete with poor football returning - hence his sacking. The correct decision imo, a change was needed I feel.

I'm not sure if I said that I disagreed with anything did I? I don't think they were considering sacking Allardyce half way through the season but some supporters were unhappy with him even during that decent run of form at the beginning of last season. He just never seemed to endear himself to West Ham supporters.

Not that it matters but I'm disagreeing that his dismissal was down to style of play. The board and fans were lukewarm about him even at Xmas. As soon as things went even a bit wrong the end was nigh.

Nothing to do with playing style. More to do with him not being pretty enough for the fashionable club West Ham want to be.

It might be worth noting that if Everton start to find their defensive mojo then Stones and Jagielka look like great picks with their tendency to pick up bonus points. The 3 Everton CBs of last season, Stones, Jags and Distin, all feature in the top 6 defenders in the league in terms of baseline BPS/min (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/06/05/baseline-bonus-point-magnets-of-201415/), suggesting that Everton's play really suits the bonus point chances of their central defenders.

I'm hoping Everton come in a little under priced due to their disappointing season. I think any of their defence could be a good option as innsie points out and I'll start another season hopeful for lukaku to do the business. Rotation in the midfield makes them too frustrating, if mirallas could nail down a spot he'd be a shoe in but he is lazy defensively so gets dropped a lot.

Really who knows how west ham will shape up next season. I'll be avoiding from the start.

The useful thing is that we actually will have an idea about how West Ham will shape up under Bilic because they will have played a number of EL qualifiers before the season begins.

Thats a very good point, I did not consider that. Someone also did an article on teams getting off to good starts when playing a competitive pre season. Wasn't totally conclusive as I recall but individual player form in EL will be a better gauge of likely start of season form than usual pre season so could uncover an underpriced gem early.

This was the situation in February (not sure what happened after that, but worth a look).

Fitness permitting, Everton should be much better if this anything to go by...

"Jagielka and Stones are a defensive double act to rely on:
The Blues centre backs have now played the full 90 minutes together 11 times this season. Everton have lost none.
In a season when Everton have underwhelmed so frequently it is a startling statistic.
Jagielka is the experienced and uncompromising, defender alongside Stones' more youthful and silky talents – but together they complement each other perfectly.
Everton have now kept three successive clean sheets and it is no coincidence that the Stones- Jagielka partnership has been at the heart of them.
As a partnership they are blossoming."

Yes. I noticed an improvement after Stones returned and the article adds weight to that.

Coleman-Stones-Jagielka-Baines is not a bad back four at all.

Quite fitting that you've paired Everton with West Ham given Bilic's history 🙂

You've got most of it spot on really. The second half of the season was terrible, relegation form in fact, and I would have feared that continuing had a change not been made. I would expect a lot to change for us in FPL terms this season given the new manager.

Allardyce did a good job over his four years and undeniably left the club in a better state. He was the perfect man to rebuild us and give us a platform to *try* and push on.

As for next year, I agree that Tomkins could be the value defender.

In midfield it seems like there will be a lot of change. If Kouyate continues to start games, I actually fancy him as a budget option, he tends to get one clear chance each game from his movement up the pitch.

Up top we could well see Valencia sold if rumours have any substance. I honestly don't trust him as a fantasy option though, he is still too unrefined and lacks some of the basics, like finishing.

A lot of this is hard to predict though given we haven't seen Bilic manage a game yet. I'll be watching the EL qualifiers and pre season and will write up a preview closer to August. You've done a good job of reviewing the past season though.

    Moreno Sakho Lovren Clyne

I reckon Skrtel will be gone. He didn't like the contract offer and he's 30 now so doesn't fit with the FSG model. Also I have the feeling BR doesn't really fancy him
I reckon Lovren will be given a chance at the start

Yep I agree. Too much has been made of the 2 left footed centre backs theory after Lovren and Sakho were signed.
Funnily enough 2 right footed centre backs playing together was never mentioned as a problem in the last 100 years of club football 🙂

It does bug me when everyone days Big San did nothing wrong, and 'look what happened to all the club's that he left....'

The truth is, our form post Xmas was awful, tactically he was poor in many games, as for the motivation thing, I don't think that the players were going out looking to not play well and lose, so don't see why Big Sam is suddenly blameless for our poor form. Truth is he didn't know how to keep it going, and get the team progressing.

And look what has happened at Stoke (Pulis out), Southampton (Pochettino in), Swansea (Monk).

Of course I'm being defensive as we may regret it in the future, but you have to roll the dice sometimes....

In fact, there's a factor that he seriously tried to make your game more attacking this season. As a result, he just put more numbers forward, you spent more time up on the field, still played long ball, and while that actually produced scoring chances which probably pleased the fans somewhat, it completely sacrificed your defence that was at relegation levels.

Maybe that revealed his limits: he has never been able to combine good attack with good defence. Either it is parking the bus, or then an absolutely horrendous defence. The slightest positive in attack was immediately reflected in crap defence. And in the end, you found yourselves in the bottom 8 where you belong with that lousy overall football.

I wouldn't contest a manager change at this point. Seems like a good idea.

No, in fact you did. There's pretty good stats on that such a percentage of your passes - relative to your low possession - were long with all season that it is not explicable by Carroll's short visit in the team. In particular, the pass you played in the box tended to be a long one. Demonstrably, long passes in the box are on average way less dangerous than the short ones. They may create chances, but seldom as good ones as when ball is played in the box short. In general, you passed long, played the most crosses despite playing only 3rd fewest passes, and took shots after few completed passes, and that did not, unsurprisingly, produce lot of quality scoring chances. Meanwhile, it did leave your defence quite in shambles.

              And I expected you're a statsman, as you've claimed to be. 😉

Your subjective view is just that, subjective and skewed. Stats give you a pretty clear picture of the whole. I'm very unsurprised that you find this abject rubbish, you're very biased man in this respect. But I'm only stating the truth of the numbers.

Yes I am a stats man. But I am also good at context. In the period that I was referring to, you are very mistaken. Of course if you took the Season as a whole - as you did - you could make your points. But, when Valencia and Sakho were playing together, we adopted a different formation and style. Still, as you weren't there ...

Although there was something good going on there early on, it's not to be exaggerated:

West Ham got their wins 1) against weak opponents, cpl, QPR, bur, NEW, wba, SWA, LEI, and 2) against Pool and City at home directly after CL clashes for the away team (away match after an European midweek match is lost on high rate), 3) with unsustainable PDO. There was no staying explanation why their opponents would continue to miss the numerous chances West Ham gave them, nor to why West Ham was scoring from relatively few and mundane chances they got, so it was never going to continue for long. They already rode their luck in, say, matches against WBA and Stoke, and yes, already then, before Carroll returned, the percentage of long passes from West Ham's very low overall number of passes was great.

The thing is you've got too much money, have to get rid of it somehow.

Lol, this is true. But this is destroying the transfers side of football. This is unfair for the clubs who don't have the money and at the end it doesn't matter where your player is going as long as you're getting well overpaid for him. These ridiculous fees for new signings should be controlled by FFP.

        1. Camp No No
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

Hmm... I disagree, in fact. The ridiculous fees are a way to get some of that ridiculous money from rich clubs to poor ones. Say, Firmino would not choose Werder Bremen before ManU even if the transfer fee was controlled to a level where Bremen could compete, because ManU would pay him higher salary. So, control of transfer fees could in fact just cause that smaller clubs would get less money from players they've developed. The unfairness follows already from that some clubs are massively rich and some are not despite doing their job pretty well. It's tough to fight that, and maybe ti shouldn't be straight fought either. Instead, for example, third party ownership is something that needlessly raises the player prices without really benefiting either players or clubs, so that should be got rid off. The agents should be more controlled anyway, They're mostly a bunch of criminal businessmen abusing first young players and then clubs for their own profit.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but it might actually be true if Falcao is looking for more gametime. Will be warming the bench at Chelsea most of the time but at Pool, with Balo, Borini and Lambert around there's a pretty good chance he starts most games.

I wouldn't label Firmino a striker, but okay. I'm also surprised if that's really the price and there's not at least some conditional later payment and/or percentage of his future transfer to Real Madrid. Because he's a pretty good player.

I must be missing something, I really don't get the hype. One good season when Suarez was carrying the team, he's quick and got a couple of tricks, but his final ball isn't anything special, his passing generally is average, as is his finishing. Coutinho is 10 times the player.

I don't believe he#s any better than Wright-Phillips was in these days, before his big money move to Chelsea:

I am aware that this sounds like a lazy comparison, in the same way any tall black midfielders is Toure/Vieira, any Argentine playmaker is Maradona/Messi etc, but I do think their playing styles are very similar.

I think Sterling is one injury away from being bang average. I don't see any more natural talent that I saw in Wright-Phillips.

Young English players are always overhyped , but i believe Sterling is a very good footballer considering he is only 20. You can't expect him to carry Liverpool on his own.

He is a good player, but I don't think he'll ever be the calibre of playmaker required at the top (Silva, Hazard, Iniesta et al). To clarify, I think he'd be a very good signing for, say, £20m, but the £45-50m being bandied about is ridiculous. The players I mentioned may seem unfair as they're world class, but at that price, that's what you need to be.

Silva was £24m, Hazard £32m, Sanchez £32m, Ozil £42.5m. That's the level required at that price, and many think Ozil was overpriced. Sterling is not, and will not be, as good as those players.

Hmmm... I don't really see him as a playmaker either, that's true. And when you put it like that, the £50M seems way too much indeed.

There is a good chance I'll be proved wrong in the long-term, it has been known to happen.

I'm just very wary of English players being hyped up before they've done anything. As an Everton fan, I'm used to it more than most. Rodwell was hyped up as the future of the England midfield when it was clear to anyone that watched him regularly that he wasn't actually that good, a year ago people were discussing £30-35m for Barkley, despite it being clear that he is far, far, far from the finished article (and may never be).

Rooney was an exception; it was clear immediately that he was a special player. I just haven't seen enough from Sterling to suggest he's worth the sums being thrown around.

in todays market, he is def worth over £30mil plus to a premier league team, given the home grown rule, and the prices other players have been sold for

I can certainly see why Liverpool are holding out for that, but I can't see why anyone would pay it. The only reason I can think is that City need home-grown players, and have an endless wallet. If Sterling wasn't home-grown, there's no way City would be willing to pay that much (I don't believe they'd be interested in him at all).

Well Utd have already made enquiries about him, and Real and Bayern are rumoured to be interested in him, albeit not at the price Liverpool are asking for. There is enough interest in him, that Liverpool can demand over the odds from a desperate City transfer committee

Isn't there a significant difference though, in that Sterling actually is fast _with_ the ball, whereas I don't remember Wright-Phillips ever running past players _with_ the ball, let alone being a great dribbler. That does make a difference, as there's one guy who can carry the ball and get past the defenders, and the other to whom you have to play the ball past the defence most of the time.

To me Sterling seems thus significantly more better than Wright-Phillips, even if he has little end product to him atm and what comes of him depends much on how he is treated and trained from here on.

I mean, of course SWP sometimes ran past a defender with the ball. I'm just saying, that he was not very good at beating the defender, and always seemed to slow down significantly with the ball in feet, or then just gave himself a long pass forward. Sterling seems technically much more apt.

This. I rarely watch a game he's involved in and think he's done anything well.

He can run fast, great. But his first touch is not good, he can't finish (at all, despite playing up front for long spells), and he doesn't seem to have any awareness of colleagues or opposition.

I do not understand the hype at all, and I'm expecting the bubble to burst as soon as he moves somewhere with more quality.

ok, so you rate Walcott more than Raheem, even though he has only scored over 10 league goals once in his career. At 20, Walcott had scored 2 league goals that season. Walcott is also extremely injury prone. He has played 27 league games in the last 2 seasons, many of which were off the bench. Sterling has played 34. Cash + Walcott for Sterling is far from ridiculous

Walcott's injuries have hampered his stats considerably. £20m is what I'd pay for a guaranteed fit Walcott, as in how I rate his ability. Factoring in his injuries it would decrease his value.

Appearances prove only that Walcott has been injured, and that Arsenal are better than Liverpool. Walcott would be first name on the team sheet at Anfield.

Yeh, but Sterling is several years younger. You pay for what may come of him. Walcott will be just about what he is now, and only decline later.

That's true, I'd put their value at around the same because I think Walcott is better but, as you say, Sterling is younger. Around £20m each seems fair to me.

But you don't pay £50m for someone who has a limited skillset, just in case he improves all of them significantly.

I don't actually see enough potential to invest in. No-one would pay more than £10m for Navas, who also just runs faster than his mind can comprehend.

Sterling has better output (goals/assists/chances created/generally higher performance).

You can't take age and potential out of it, again it's the argument of picking and choosing the attributes/statistics that suit you. Sterling has bags of potential imo; don't think he's gonna be Ronaldo but he could still be a top player. So much scope for improvement but already raw ability is there for everyone to see.

Sure, nobody should pay the price of a star player for a one that merely can develop into a star. Like, I think ManU paid a price of 10-years of top level LB when they bought Shaw, but it's just one thing they may end up getting, if everything pans out the best way. It's like paying for the best case scenario when actually getting a high risk investment.

So, no, maybe I wouldn't pay that £50M for Sterling either, but thats the markets now. PL has been injected with silly money, and some ridiculous player restrictions will be imposed over PL clubs, so these clubs will pay that silly money for anybody they think will be an actually playable English player on CL level. And that's at least what they can justifiably see in Sterling's future.

Walcott at a similar age was a better finisher and dribber. He wasn't great at making the right runs but he has improved that markedly now, and his finishing has got even better.

I can't see Raheem being able to hone his skills as he doesn't seem to have them at all. He can't kick a ball hard enough to trouble a keeper and misses very clear cut opportunities regularly. So yeah, Walcott is better in my opinion.

This is not true at all. At the same age, Walcott had scored 2 goals that season, and 4 in the previous season. His finishing was poor and ridiculed. He has improved that part of his game significantly

Ha yeah Suarez' finishing was woeful. I persisted with him in FPL in the seasons before he exploded. Always did everything but score. And i didnt play the one year he absolutely smashed it, so i have a skewed view on him unfortunately. Countless 2 point captain appearances where he hit the post and bar numerous times.

But no one was discussing £50m for Walcott! I think Sterling's realistic level is around where Walcott is now; a very good player, but never going to be as good as, say, Sanchez. That is not good enough for £50m.

Yeah happy to leave it at this. Won't be a world-beater, may be half decent at best. Not worth even half the hype he's had, massively outweighing the potential over the tangible. We'll see, but I suspect a few years as a bit-part at a team that doesn't rely on him and he'll be entirely un-noteworthy.

As I said above, that's fair enough. I can see why Liverpool are holding out for more, because someone will probably pay it. I just don't believe anyone should be paying that.

Then again, City have endless money and need a home-grown player. £50m is nothing to them.

Exactly, as I said, money is nothing to City, so they're the one club I can see paying that for Sterling. Their transfer business in the last 2 years has been dreadful, I can fully see them bidding £50m for Sterling. Doesn't mean I think he's worth anywhere near that.

I know. But I just looked in my memory for a player who clearly did have some serious raw potential in terms of technique, but who never got that potential really tapped. The point I want to make is that we can actually see that potential in some player, and it is there, and it can be worked with, but there's always more than just potential in a success story. Denison maybe epitomises that, because nobody would deny his potential, yet we're not mislead by him getting any great results with it as he ended up being quite mediocre, at best. So, while Sterling, too, can also turn into a mediocrity, in that pace and technique alone there is potential to work with and something very good could come out of it too. You know, Denilson could have become Ronaldinho, and Ronaldinho could have been that Ronaldinho for a longer time.

Sterling could become a very good player if he can sort out his passing and finishing but, as I said first off, he could just be the next SWP. Maybe £20m is a fair price for that potential, but for £30m plus you are paying for guaranteed quality. Sanchez, Ozil, even Silva at £24m - proven world class players.

Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Hoffenheim midfielder Roberto Firmino, according to reports

The Brazilian midfielder was surprisingly linked with a move to Old Trafford on Thursday afternoon and things looked to have moved on since, with the 23-year-old, who is part of Brazil’s Copa America squad reportedly set to join Louis Van Gaal’s side for approximately £13m.

“Firmino has been consistently loyal to Hoffenheim, and he surprised a few people by agreeing a new deal last March. He feels the club has helped him develop as a player, but after Hoffenheim failed to qualify for Europe, it seems like the right time to move on,” Bundesliga expert Kevin Hatchard told talkSPORT.

“He’s been on United’s radar for a long time, and they’ll have been impressed by his ability to have a positive impact on games week-in week-out.

“If United get him for the figures being quoted, they’ll have pulled off a big coup.”

Now, you see, THIS is the point I'm making about Sterling. The figures being quoted for players like Firmino and Kovacic, around the £15m mark, make the notion of £40-50m for Sterling absolutely preposterous.

UK's Sterling is worth £50m .. if born in other parts of the world he's worth £15m but he wouldn't be stepping out of Anfield coz of contract issues..

IMO it's completely laughable to suggest Sterling, a 20 year old player who has shown a heck of a lot in 2 seasons at that age is average. Just because he may not be as good as Coutinho (again also debatable), doesn't make him average.

It's like saying James is average because he's not as good as Ronaldo.

It's laughable to suggest that Sterling is average, but not laughable to suggest that if he was not English but, say, Italian, Dutch or French, and not playing in Porto, you would only pay £15M or less for him. English players are way overpriced, and every year more so.

Kovacic is a better player than Sterling, and £16m is the figure suggested for him. The money discussed for Sterling is because he's home-grown, it's not for his talent. I know that this is an important factor for a club like Man City, but Sterling as a plaer alone is not worth anything close to £40-50m.

Teams in other countries do not have as much money as PL clubs, I think everyone should recognise this. As a result, PL prices are inflated and other prices from abroad seem almost like peanuts.

Kovacic may be going for 16-20m but Inter do not have the financial power they used to. If he was playing in the PL for Liverpool or Spurs he'd be going for £35m for example, the same price that Sterling should probably go for. Just because Liverpool are valuing Sterling at that price doesn't mean he is worth that price BUT bearing in mind he's 20, has shown a lot of potential (as dislikeable as his behaviour is), comparisons with SWP are quite far off imo, Liverpool don't 'need' to sell, City have loads of money and PL/English prices are always inflated, it's hardly surprising that he's gonna go for around the £40m mark.

Eventually, this may turn into prices going up for non-PL players too when a PL club get interested. That has been the tendency: when City, Real or PSG bids, prices go up. This could particularly be the case if the new restrictions for non home grown players come in force in PL.

As I've said, Liverpool are right to hold out for that much, because a club like City will pay it. I'm thinking from the perspective of a buying club, not Liverpool. As a player, ignoring the home-grown factor, he is worth around £20m imo. City could go and get Kovacic for less than that, or could have bought Ozil/Sanchez for the price suggested for Sterling.

City have a blank cheque so can pay astronomical sums just to get their home-grown quota up, but Sterling as a player is not anywhere near that level.

But you can't ignore the home-grown factor, it's very important. Can't pick and choose which things are included/excluded from transfer valuation.

Liverpool actually do have pressure to sell Beavis, come January he can leave on a Webster or something like that, after this summer his price drop off will be steep.

They can hold out knowing Man City will pay it though, no point accepting the first bid that comes along.

Of course not saying they won't or shouldn't, but they will have to sell within this upcoming transfer window to get the best deal for themselves.

Interested to see what Doos thinks, but that would be a good move. He's a goalscorer, and a good player in and around the box.

Yep, would be a good FPL option too if he came in at 7.5-8.0 and remained injury free. That last part is a tough obstacle though, many of us including myself have poor memories of him for the season just passed...
