Two Way Defensive Rotations 2015/2016

With the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) opening this week many managers have already started tinkering with their teams. This article takes a look at the cheap defensive rotations to consider for the first half of the season (up until the New Year), their price and the best fixtures for those selecting from these pairs each week.

SWANSEA-SUNDERLAND

Total Cost: 9.5

Nailed-on Swansea defenders have come in at 5.0, whilst all but one of Sunderland’s starting defenders have been priced at 4.5, with the attack-minded Patrick van Aanholt being the exception at 5.0. This rotation pairing appears to be strong and faces a lot of the promoted sides within the first few fixtures.

BOURNEMOUTH-NORWICH

Total Cost: 9.0

AVL sun STO LEI BOU SUN whm WAT new WBA sot NEW swa EVE wat EVE wba CPL AVL lei WHM

The defenders for these two newly promoted sides have come in at 4.5, so they are a very attractive prospect for rotation. Attacking full-backs Simon Francis and Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth are among a raft of appealing options within this pair of teams. Besides the two home fixtures against Everton, this is a very strong rotation pairing.

WEST HAM-ASTON VILLA

Total Cost: 9.5-10

Bou LEI BOU SUN NEW WBA NOR STO cpl SWA wat EVE eve WAT sot STO new WHM nor sun

This rotation could be a little pricey for some people as regular starting West Ham defenders come in at 5.0. It remains to be seen whether a cheaper 4.5 defender can nail down a place. Aaron Cresswell is a very attacking-full back and had a great season last year so could be worth the premium at 5.5. Micah Richards’ recent move to Aston Villa from Manchester City may entice some at 4.5 and he is definitely one to watch.

NORWICH-STOKE

Total Cost: £9.0m

Starting defenders on both sides start at 4.5 here, with Sebastien Bassong a likely candidate for investment in the Canaries’ backline. Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Erik Pieters come in at 5.0, which may put off some managers but all other options are equally priced at 4.5.

WEST BROM – SUNDERLAND

Total Cost: 9.5

Lei NOR SWA avl SOT bou EVE WHM SUN nor LEI SOT cpl STO TOT WAT BOU swa NEW AVL

West Brom defenders have increased in price this season, mainly due to Tony ‘the Clean Sheet Master’ Pulis taking charge of the Baggies during the middle of last season. Each of their defenders comes priced at 5.0, which isn’t cheap but will certainly be worth the investment. Sebastian Coates and John O’Shea are the pick of Sunderland’s 4.5 options.

ASTON VILLA – SWANSEA

Total Cost: 9.5

Bou NEW sun SUN wat WBA sot STO STO avl tot nor BOU WAT LEI ARS WHM WBA nor sun

Similarly to the Swansea-Sunderland rotation above, this pairing comes in at 9.5 due to the highly priced Swansea defenders. Villa’s Richards could be the key to ensuring this still offers value. The fixtures look pretty enticing besides an away game to Southampton and a home game to Arsenal

SWANSEA-STOKE

Total Cost: 9.5

LIV NEW nor WBA wat LEI BOU avl STO WAT new nor BOU sun LEI whm WHM WBA cpl wba

Besides the first tough fixture, the rest of the rotation looks quite favourable. As with other rotations involving Swansea, their defenders will set you back 5.0 unless a cheaper option emerges during pre-season.

ASTON VILLA – NORWICH

Total Cost: 9.0

bou STO SUN BOU WBA whm LEI new WBA tot SWA eve WAT wat EVE new WHM AVL sun

This is another cheap rotation involving budget starting defenders, most notably Bassong and Martin Olsson, both priced at 4.5 for Norwich.

Great stuff. The Stoke and Norwich one is something I've gone for in my goalkeepers. I like the Bournemouth and Norwich ones too...lots of scope for good value rotation.

      yep, Butland, Ruddy looks excellent

we pretty much have the same defence tbh.

      Butland, Ruddy

      Ivan, Cedric, Morgan, Coates, Francis

We do. I only have O'Shea in as a coin flip with him Jones and Coates. Could easily have Coates to match up.

I think our set of defenders is really good...lots of value. Morgan should do well with the new bonus - his tackling is off the chart. Ruddy should get lots of saves (check his 2013/14 prem stats). Plus Cedric looks nailed on and a decent risk free punt.

Francis and Mings are a bit of a coin flip - I marginally favour Francis's experience at Bournemouth.

For me the Swa and West Ham rotations are too pricey. For 5m I'm keen to play most weeks - which is what I plan for Cedric.

Morgan won't start GW1 unless he's a machine. Copa America group stage with Jamaica and now Gold Cup. Huth would be my Leicester defender of choice

He's so cheap though that I'm happy for another of my defender to come in for Morgan in gwk 1. He'll still be the main man, even if he starts late.

    I need some expert advice.
Bournemouth and West ham have a perfect rotation for the first 8 Game weeks for Clean sheets.
Would it be wise to double up? As in Boruc/Mings GW1 with Adrian/Burke or Cresswell on the bench. GW2 rotate when West Ham are home. And so on so on..

Yep, it's a common strategy if you really fancy their CS prospects.

I think its a good strategy. If it works you gain an immediate advantage on most other FPL players.

You have a little problem with Boruc and Burke not being sure to start a single match in those 8 first, but other than that, not bad.

Do you not think Boruc will start?

I like the idea, but GWs 9&10 look tricky for both, so you might find yourself having to make a lot of transfers quickly to get them off the teamsheet.

That doesn't mean don't do it though.

Very useful, thanks! Have left 9m of my budget over so looks like Stoke - Norwich are decent rotation options.

What are your thoughts on Myhill and Guzan as Gk rotation pair?

Villa will probably buy a keeper.

Cheers for this. I might switch from Myhill to Ruddy to rotate with Butland. Hennessey to WBA as initial starter would be amazing though

    Great article, thanks.

I haven't heard many people talking about Stoke / Newcastle as a GK rotation:
SOT, swa, nor, WBA, whm, WAT, BOU, avl, NOR, WAT, STO, bou, LEI, sun, LIV, whm, AVL, EVE, wba, wba, NOR, WHM, WAT until GW23, at which point the wildcards will need to have been used.

Apart from Krul facing LIV in GW15 and a tricky first couple, it seems decent. Also, on the assumption that Newcastle can't possibly be that bad again and Begovic goes to Chelsea, I think Krul and Butland are both bargains at £4.5m

I'm also toying with the idea of a risky four-way, £19m defensive rotation featuring representatives of Bournemouth, West Brom, Southampton and Sunderland:
    AVL-new, NOR-wat, SWA-wat, LEI-NOR, nor-wba, SUN-bou, SWA-EVE, WAT-WHM, LEI-SUN, NEW-nor, BOU-LEI, NEW-sun, STO-cpl, STO-EVE, AVL-TOT, WAT-cpl, BOU-wba, CPL-swa, NEW-whm, AVL-nor, WHM-WAT, NOR-WBA, BOU-AVL, again until GW23. Couple of tricky away games, but last season's top seven avoided apart from one home game against Tottenham.

Add one floating defender who has good fixtures in the next six (starting with Leicester), then I think that basically frees up nearly all the transfers for the front players, injuries pending.

Risky, or just stupid enough to work???

Looks good to me. The main reason I like it is that apart from Bournemouth they others looking pretty nailed to be defences and Bournemouth could turn out to be also. Some of the rotations I've seen are with poor teams so don't interest me at all.

Interesting defender combinations. I was considering rotating goalkeepers but also read a post on a different page about playing One top keeper, i.e. Courtious, Cech then have a none playing 4.0 keeper warming the bench all season, do you think this is a good approach?

      Hi Brutal Deluxe,

The AVL/NOR should be this for the first 6:

bou sun STO SUN BOU WBA

I have based these rotations on the Season Ticker in the Member's Area and it shows Bournemeouth away to be a better fixture than Palace at home.
