Calling For The Best Captain Rotations

There is so much attention paid every year to defensive rotation and selecting the best combination of cheap goalkeepers and defenders to help navigate through the schedule. But there is another form of rotation that is often neglected but is arguably more important – that of ensuring you have a solid captain option every week.

A classic example of this that’s worked well in years past was moving the armband between Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney to take advantage of Manchester City and Manchester United’s home and away rotation, with both having strong home goalscoring records.

But with Aguero possibly being eased in slowly at the start of the season due to his Copa America commitments, I thought it would be good to use the comment section of this article to discuss the merits of other captaincy rotation options.

For example, investing heavily in Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in the first five Gameweeks could present a strong captaincy option to kick-start the season. Switching between Eden Hazard, Wayne Rooney and a strong Arsenal candidate such as Alexis Sanchez when he returns from his summer break or Theo Walcott, would present us with a run of  WHM, avl or cpl, NEW, CPL and STO.

Alternatively, switching to Aguero from Gameweek four and leaving the armband on him until Gameweek 9 would provide you with WAT, cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, & BOU for your captain.

Feel free to leave your thoughts here on the best potential captaincy rotation.

Thanks for this. By the looks of it the best top 4 team fixtures each gameweek are

    Gwk 1 ARS/CHE
    Gwk 2 MUN/ARS
    Gwk 3 MUN
    Gwk4 -Gwk 8 MCI

For me I'm looking to get a good ManU option for GAmeweek 1-4, a good Arsenal as a back up captain, a good Chelsea for choice in Gwk 1 and then Gameweek 4 -8 (which is as far s I've looked) go for Aguero (c).

So for me the rotation for the first 8 would be

    Hazard/Rooney/Rooney/Aguero/Aguero/Aguero/Aguero/Aguero

    Gwk 1 ARS/CHE
    Gwk 2 MUN/ARS
    Gwk 3 MUN
    Gwk4 -Gwk 8 MCI

Starting to think twice about Costa and Hazard now for Gameweek 1.

Give to Rooney GW 1 too. For me it's 3 Rooney than 4 Kun. That is it

Yep, I think you may be right. Walcott is also a potentially great option. got another community article out tomorrow which shows just how reliable he is for returns - keep an eye out for that.

Agreed Jonty, this is why I'm avoiding Costa unless he looks very sharp in the Shield.

ACtually this is a really good exercise - captains are the most important part of the team - but hardly any time is taken to look at ensuring there's a good captain in place every week.

Bit wary of Utd, Rooney we know is capable of great scores but last season averaged just 4 ppg, Id rather see some signs of bigger scoring before sticking the armband there.

Last season he spent half of it as a defensive midfielder so not the best indicator.

Costa/Rooney/Rooney/Aguero till GW8, not drafting Hazard in anyway.

Rooney is poised to get goals provided he will play as central striker. Now the million dollar question is "Will LVG allow Rooney to play as central striker??"

Unless he's willing to put a winger at striker instead of an actual striker, yes.

    Costa - SWA
    Kane - STO
    Rooney - NEW

Strong start to the season, then swap one of these to Aguero and captain him every week.

That's a heavy front line though, what does the rest of your team look like?

        Ruddy - Rudd
        Azpilicueta - Cedric - Huth - Coates - Francis
        Yaya - Mata - Cazorla - Ritchie - Wanyama
        Costa - Rooney - Kane

Something like that could work well. Then swap two of the front three for Kun and a budget forward - i.e. Rooney and Kane to Aguero and JRod.

I don't have the stats, but from what I can remember, Rooney has an excellent record against TOT, avl & NEW. First 3 GW. And the 5th GW is LIV, he should be fired up for that one as usual. Excellent Captain choice.

Slightly off topic but captaincy is the main reason for owning Hazard and Aguero

I'm not sure I'd captain Hazard too often. Which in turn makes me wonder why I have him. Aguero on the other hand I could captain all season (if his legs could take the strain).

I have Costa and Fabs but not Hazard with the intention of captaining Costa GW1 and eventually moving him out for Aguero

But he got the most points last year?

Granted he played more than Aguero and Costa, but surely he's still a good captain choice?

Rooney is slightly less appealing without penalties but it depends if Utd buy a striker like they need to.

No Hazard for me, £2.5m elsewhere makes a big difference. Aguero and Romney should cover capt with the occasional punt on Walcott 🙂

Rooney, walcott, sanchez when he is healthy...costa proved to us that he does not work well as a captin last season. Also I believe falcao will overtake him in the pecking order before the season ends

As a United fan I wouldn't trust us until you've seen the first couple of games. For me it's worth finding an alternative for the first 2 games and then jumping on for Newcastle at home if things start well. There was a lot of talk about doubling up on United attack this time last year for our great start and look how that panned out...

On the subject of captains I don't tend to put a lot of focus on it because I think if you manage your midfield/attack around the upcoming fixtures you will always have a good option for captain and sometimes its easier to just have one good option

      Absolutely!
Its a case of too much information sometimes just gets in the way..
Normally like you say you just need one good option for that week, also when you need an differential its nearly always the Captaincy that ends up being it..

        > Its a case of too much information sometimes just gets in the way

There's no such thing in my eyes.

If we spend time on our defensive rotations, then logically we should also consider our attack as well.

      @Penguin

It's good to see we're in agreement here.

While you may not actively think about your captain's choice ahead of time, you are in fact planning for it when you say that you "manage your midfield/attack around the upcoming fixtures".

Nice topic for an article - I've been pondering this for some time. There don't seem many captaincy options yet without any form to go on.

My current plan is Costa - Rooney - Rooney then switch to Aguero for GW4

      Thanks, for that.

And, I do agree this year seems a lil' bit tougher than years past in figuring out the first few weeks.

Although, I do like Costa at home GW1 as well, he positively crushed Swansea last year.

    Dear all,
Superb topic. Thank you for the helpful discussion so far.

I see RMT in members area favours Kane on a number of weeks over the initial 10 GWs. Although I am now thoughtful after considering Rooney's form vs Spurs. It depends if he gets to enjoy the striker position I suppose.

I am intrigued that there is low support for Kane though.

    Schmeichel
    Francis, Morgan, Baker
    Wanyama, Hazard, Mané, Cazorla
    Deeney, Agüero, Rooney

    Subs: Fabianski, Mings, Senderos, Payet.

And thoughts of this starting 11?

Just wondering what you think the best way to accommodate Aguero is? come GW4. (because he seems essential after GW4)

I've been considering my own personal options and I think I have to ship Rooney for him..
Going to be tricky to get him in I think.

    Thanks

Great article O'S, planning ahead for my captains is actually the first thing I do, I agree its absolutely critical to have a stand out option each week
