Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Thursday

Southampton sweep aside Vitesse Arnhem, thanks to goals from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long. Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate net for the Hammers but a lack of discipline costs Slaven Bilic’s side dearly, whilst Patrick Bamford hits a 20-minute hat-trick as Palace put six past Bromley Town.

Southampton 3 Vitesse Arnhem 0

The Saints impressed at both ends of the pitch as Ronald Koeman’s side edged towards the Europa League group stages with a comprehensive win at St Mary’s. Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic (penalty) and substitute Shane Long all found the net, with Sadio Mane supplying a pair of assists before new boy Juanmi teed up Long for the third.

Koeman named Maarten Stekelenburg in goal, with a back-four comprised of Cedric Soares, Maya Yoshida, José Fonte and Matt Targett. Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama sat in the double-pivot, whilst Steven Davis, Mane and Tadic Dušan tucked in behind lone striker Pelle. New boy Soares caught the eye with a number of raiding runs down the right, whilst Yoshida was unlucky not to find the net after missing a handful of opportunities.

After the match, Koeman highlighted his key performers:

“Jordy had a good understanding with Victor, who I thought was one of the best players on the pitch in my opinion. Cedric had good movements in the first half. He was dangerous in the attacking position. Maarten made a good save at 2-0 and you always like to have the goalkeeper in that kind of important moment saving the team. Mane was outstanding. He is fast and he had good movements in attack. He’s very difficult to defend in a good way against. He played well.”

The Saints boss conceded that Clasie is a doubt for the season opener at Newcastle after the midfielder was forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring problem. Given that the return leg against Vitesse is just three days before their trip to St James’ Park, last night’s result may well persuade Koeman to rest some of his key players to avoid further injury headaches.

West Ham 2 AFC Astra Giurgiu 2

Goals from Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate had placed Slaven Bilic’s side in the driving seat before the dismissal of James Collins allowed the visitors to claw back a two-goal deficit.

In terms of team selection, Bilic lined his side up in a 4-3-1-2 set-up, according to the club’s twitter feed. Adrian got the nod in goal, with O’Brien, Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell in the back-four. Mark Noble, Reece Oxford and Cheikhou Kouyate patrolled the central midfield, with Dimitri Payet (who grabbed the assist for Valencia’s opener) handed the role in “the hole” behind the Ecuadorian and Zarate.

Bilic was unable to call upon suspended pair James Tomkins and Diafra Sakho for this one and will now need to make do without Collins and Joey O’Brien for the return leg next Thursday. The latter earned his third yellow of the tournament before being replaced due to injury, whilst Valencia was also forced off, adding to his manager’s woes.

Post-match, Bilic admitted he was somewhat concerned by Valencia’s injury after the forward – playing his first match since the Copa America – was stretchered off:

“I am worried to be fair. And this is the reason I am unhappy tonight. I am not happy with the result of course but this is not as important as the injury. It looks serious but we won’t know for sure until he has a scan.”

In spite of the draw, though, the Hammers boss confirmed that most of his starters for the Gameweek 1 trip to Arsenal will not take part in next Thursday’s return leg:

“It was the same plan, no matter what the result is, that the majority of the players who will start against Arsenal will not participate in that game. We would like to do both, but the Premier League was and is the priority for us.”

The Croatian faces a real defensive dilemma for the return leg next week, then. With Collins, Tomkins and O’Brien all suspended, he could turn to Reece Burke in light of his above comments. Carl Jenkinson is likely to play in O’Brien’s absence, though the former cannot feature against his parent club at the Emirates. With O’Brien a doubt for the Arsenal clash, the Hammers could be severely hampered at right-back for the opening day of the season, having also allowed Guy Demel to leave over the summer. Given that Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to feature for the hosts, Arsene Wenger may well choose to unleash Theo Walcott down the Arsenal left to take advantage.

Bromley Town 0 Crystal Palace 6

Patrick Bamford was the star of the show as the Eagles ran riot at Bromley Arena. The on-loan Chelsea striker grabbed a first-half hat-trick before being replaced at the break, whilst Sullay Kaikai, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha also added their names to the score sheet.

Alan Pardew mainly called upon players who had failed to earn much pitch time in the club’s recent tour of South Africa. Alex McCarthy got the nod in goal, with a back-four of Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland, Luke Croll and Christian Scales. Zaha, Jordon Mutch, Joe Ledley and Kaikai made up the midfield, allowing Gayle and Bamford to take their places up front. The Eagles boss made seven changes over the course of the second period, though Yannick Bolasie has yet to feature in recent matches due to an ongoing hamstring problem.

I'd really consider Giroud if I as you. He is Wenger's number 1 striker. Whilst I'm the first to admit he isn't 'the title winning striker' he still has a lot of value. I'd back him to net more than Kane, Benteke, Lukaku this season. He gets the assists as well. West Ham at home is a great fixture.

I would swap Ivan to Azpi and have some funds freed up to enhance your fifth midfielder. I don't think having a DMC (Wanyama) is worthwhile...

Also if Bassong is 4.5 there may be better options, e.g. a Leicester CB....

      Food for thought mate!

ive had giroud previous seasons the amount of shots he gets and just doesn't finish makes it so frustrating to pick him !!! haha

I prefer both Özil and Ramsay over Cazorla, and I wouldn't be without Hazard. Forwards look good, and you have a clear path to Aguero. 7/10.

None of them will play imo, picking the one with the lowest ownership prevents you getting a dreaded 3.9 or 3.8 defender at least.

Taylor has the second highest ownership behind Baker (6.3% vs 15%)

Why so out of interest? If he doesn't start people will sell dropping the price.

          1. Pasqualinho
            • 14 Years

But price drops are calculated by a percentage of owners selling a player, not an absolute figure. So the low ownership one has, in theory, as much chance of dropping as a high ownership one, as the highly-owned one needs more transfers.

There is a theory (which I subscribe to) which leans me towards a player who's in most dead teams - as dead teams don't sell players this should have some effect on the price drop but this still has some element of guesswork.

The clincher for me is that higher-owned players seem to have more accurate predictions on the price-drop sites - so while they may still drop quicker, we're prepared for it. Lower-owned players often drop without warning.

Hi any comments on this please, I really want to do well this year!

    Butland / Myhill

    Mertesacker / O'Shea / Huth / Francis / Ward

Hazard / Walcott / Yaya Toure / Chadli / Bentaleb

    Rooney / Costa / Wilson

Still not set on a GK rotation, and not sure about Francis too whether he's nailed as Mings is another option...

Wouldn't bank on Afellay just yet Bojan would seem to be a more reliable choice if you want a Stoke midfielder because Afellay hasn't really hit the ground running wherever he goes also Costa is a bit of a headache I have no idea if he will be fit plus you already have a big hitter in Hazard but on his day Costa can be solid

Tbf I would choose Ozil instead of Cazorla because he will be playing a bit more of a deeper role this year rather than as a No. 10 but it's your choice. For a striker maybe Pelle? Giroud and Kane are all good shouts IMO and if they are doing bad you can just simply swap them for Costa

Always thought Jerome was a bit of a flop in the EPL and one of those "joke players" as some posters would call him.. Loved watching him in the championship last season(20 goals!) so decided to check his history in the EPL
29 goals and 19 assists in around 120 games(11000 minutes) .. that's an attacking return every 2.5 games.
    Not bad at all 😯

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

and note: He scored as many goals and assists as Wilson in 10 less starts in the Championship and is considered an EPL fail yet so many think Wilson will do well with no EPL experience whatsoever for 0.5 more!

Not bad, not great. I expect he'll get 6-7 goals and 2-3 assists this season. Unless they're bunched together, though, he won't be much use to us. His main appeal is that he brings the midfield into play excellently - expect a few goals from the players in the attacking three behind the front man for Norwich.

Wouldn't be surprised if he scored vs Palace GW1 or Sunderland GW2 or both.

However, There is another particularly intriguing option at 5.0.

Wouldn't pay much attention even if Tekkers scores hat trick on saturday at Helsinki.

Hjk will probably field reserve team cos they have champions league qualifier game gainst Astana on tuesday. And even if they didn't play their reserves its still sunday league team.

It's more about him getting some pre-season in before GW1.

I really want a Leicester Attacking player in my team, I like them, I like their fixtures, so I figured the best way to do this would be to find £0.5 to upgrade Wilson to Vardy.

So I guess my first question is, do you think this is a good idea? I would value your opinion, although I'm probably sticking with mine lol.

secondly, which way do you think would be best to get the money I need?

    The team looks like this....

    Ruddy, Butland

    Azpilicueta, Cedric, Huth, Francis, Ward

    Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Ozil, Fletcher

    Rooney, Pelle, Wilson

I am 100% keeping Azpili, Cedric, Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Rooney and Pelle.

so here are my options as I see them

    A) Ozil to Mane, triple up on southampton, a bit much, but I think they will do well.

    B) Huth, Francis or Ward to a 4.0....not sure about this option as I dont want dead weight on my bench.

    C) something else that I cant see?

Don't like Defoe at all, that's my opinion though. Downgrade Chadli to Ritchie and upgrade Defoe to Sakoho, IMO.

And Sterling over Depay with Roon in the side.

Anyone that has Sterling and planning to bring in Aguero going to keep them both? If so, would you be sacrificing attacking coverage from the likes of United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool?

No such thing as coverage. Get the players who you think will score the most points.

I'm not ruling it out; it would mean my premier striker Rooney being sacrificed for Aguero.

Why does every team I see have Francis? Is he the penalty taker or some kind of assist king? Why would people want to pay 4.5 for a Bournemouth defender? Honestly don't see them getting many clean sheets this year with their possession style of play.

Possession style of play is great for CS.

See Southampton and Swansea since they came up.
