Scout Report – Chancel Mbemba

On Thursday, Newcastle raided Anderlecht for the second time this summer, signing defender Chancel Mbemba for a fee reportedly in the region of £8.5 million. The 20-year-old has penned a five-year deal at St James’ Park, and will join up with his team-mates in the middle of next week once his overseas work visa is granted.

Speaking to the club’s official website about his move to Tyneside, the DR Congo international expressed his happiness at securing a move to the Premier League:

“I know the team very well. I’ve watched the Premier League and I know this is a massive team with big players and with a great coach. I’ve come here to Newcastle United because it’s a very good move in my career to play for such a famous club. I am excited for the season ahead.”

THE HISTORY

Mbemba began his footballing journey in the DR Congo, playing for E.S. La Grace and FC MK Etancheite in Kinshasa during his youth career, before joining Anderlecht in 2011. Confusion over Mbemba’s birth date meant he initially was limited to playing with the reserves as the investigation was carried out, with the defender eventually making his first team debut in a 3-2 defeat to Lokeren in the opening match of the 2013/14 campaign. He immediately became a regular in the starting XI, and made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring an impressive six goals and grabbing a single assist, playing his part as Anderlecht won the Belgian Pro League.

Last season, Mbemba made 36 appearances for the Belgian outfit, including all six of Anderlecht’s Champions League matches, and registered three goals and one assist. After making his international debut for DR Congo in 2012, Mbemba has gone on to make 17 appearances for his country.

THE PROSPECTS

Given the considerable outlay, it’s fair to say that Mbemba appears very likely to establish himself in the starting XI at St James’ Park sooner rather than later. Speaking about his latest signing, head coach Steve McClaren outlined what qualities the centre-back will bring to the squad:

“He is a proven performer at the highest level, he’s powerful, combative and will add quality to our defence. He also has an eye for goal which is an extra asset for us. We will get him integrated into the squad quickly once he is with us. Unfortunately, due to the time it takes to process the visa application that won’t be in time for our final friendly on Saturday, but our focus will be to make sure he will be ready and available as soon as possible.”

The defender’s late arrival places doubt as to whether he will feature in McClaren’s thoughts for the Gameweek 1 home clash against Southampton, but the mention of Mbemba’s “eye for goal” will certainly strike a chord with Fantasy managers.

In terms of the Magpies defensive set-up for the season ahead, much depends on the future of Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine is a doubt for the start of the season with an Achilles injury and may well be set to leave the club anyway, with rumours of a move to Crystal Palace growing. Should Coloccini indeed depart, Mbemba is likely to be partnered by one of Mike Williamson, Paul Dummett or Steven Taylor, whilst England U21 international Jamaal Lascelles has featured throughout pre-season under McClaren and may even be in contention.

Taking a look at Mbemba’s defensive statistics from his six Champions League outings last term, he averaged 2.5 tackles and 3.3 interceptions per match, turning in some very favourable displays that have drawn comparisons with City skipper Vincent Kompany. In the Premier League last season, Coloccini only managed 1.9 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per 90 minutes, while Williamson logged just 1.1 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game. Certainly based on those statistics, it’s easy to see why the DR Congo international is expected to quickly nail down a role in McClaren’s first XI once he has settled into life in the North East.

Much depends on his cost across the Fantasy games, though. Right-back Daryl Janmaat is the only Newcastle defender to be priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, with all the other members of the backline bar Taylor (4.0) available for 4.5. Given Mbemba’s aerial threat from set-pieces, there’d be no real surprise if he joins the Dutch international in the 5.0 price bracket, but should he be valued at 4.5, the young centre-back could prove to be something of a bargain. Ideally, though, Fantasy managers will be hoping for Taylor to nail down a role alongside the new boy, affording us a rare 4.0-priced starter for our five-man backlines.

Newcastle’s tough opening schedule, however, will mean it’s later in the season where Mbemba could really come into his own. The Magpies play six of last year’s top eight (SOT, swa, mun, ARS, CHE, mci) over the first eight, with the fixture list smiling far kinder from Gameweek 9 onwards (NOR, sun, STO, bou, LEI).

It may take a little time for Mbemba to settle into English football both on and off the pitch, with high profile centre-backs such as Nemanja Vidic and Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala having struggled during the start of their careers in England. The statistics certainly point to the former Anderlecht defender being able to command a place in the starting XI, and with his proven goal threat, Mbemba could emerge as a viable Fantasy asset as the season develops.

    First 3 gameweeks:

    A. Ivan & Deeney
    B. Azpi & Sakho

The issue is I'd have to play Sakho GW1 (ars) rather than Deeney (eve).

B is a better pick IMO.

Reason - it includes two proven FPLplayers, whilst A includes only one proven FPL player.

Sakho has more of a chance scoring against arsenal than deeney does against Everton IMO.

    Hennessey / McCarthy

    Merte / Jenkinson / Coates / Huth / Mings

    Hazard / Walcott / Sterling / Mane / Sinclair (!)

    Rooney / Benteke / Sakho

I thin Sinclair offers good coverage for Sakho in gw 1 and 4. Benteke might not make for gw1 but Sakho isn't bad stunt for him.

Not much love for Charlie Adam ?

He finished last season very strong and ended up with 7 goals and 3 assists for 97 points having played 1511 minutes, if that was adjusted for 3000 minutes he could 'potentially' have finished on 192 points (identical to his highest ever fpl finish with Hull).

Minutes per attempt: 26 mins, better than Mane at 37 mins

He's been priced at a reasonable 6.0, the same as popular pick Ritchie who I see in plenty of RMT's.

Great preseason. Looks more of a CB than a LB. Young, full of promise. FPL wise, nowhere near worth it yet. If he gets a run due to injury, could be hard to shift.

Will probably start first week or two until Moreno's match fit/shed a few pounds. If at 4m then would be a great punt but probably better value at 4.5m. As Clump says as well he isn't even a natural Lb not that players natural positions have mich bearing on Rodgers decisions admittedly.

If you only have 8m to spend then I would fancy Coutinho over Mane but if you have the extra 0.5m then go for an Arsenal Mid. Would monitor Payet as well first couple of game weeks as an alternative to the 8m bracket to save you a bit of cash.

As as a loyal supporter, faithful and true, my 2pth worth, I offer to you:
Clyne to Jenkinson, then Oshea to PVA for the same cost gives you nice rotation of Whm Bou, safer Sunderland starter, and no crappy Liverpool away fixtures to sweat over.
Was keen on Fletcher as my bench sitter as well, but he didn't start against us yesterday in what was a very strong Pulis starting line up, don't know if that is a risk or if just being rested.

Are you starting to consider our youngest ever player as your 5.5 target after today?

Probably, but not sure even Dick knows what formation he will play him in - he played lone striker today, out wide in the previous one, and as a two in the one before, where he scored a brace. He is not exactly pushed for competition at the moment, Fletcher needs a drawing to remember what the goal looks like, Wickham looks like he is Palace bound (gawd knows what they see in him unless they plan to only play him for the last few weeks of the season) and Danny Graham is ... well Danny Graham.
Jordan Rhodes being linked at the moment, but as it stands, I'd say he's a good price for the first 10 weeks as a cheap enabler for Kun or Hazard in your team rather than a promoted team striker.

Managed to reply to everyone's teams a few pages back. Hope it helped.

Think the quality of teams this year is better than last. Not that many making rookie mistakes. Good teams in general. Aguero/no Aguero splits most teams. More people in the Hazard boat than out, from the replies I got anyway. 🙂

Far from nailed. Gomez has impressed in pre season and will get his share of minutes as things stand. If nailed somehow, he'd be a good pick. He crosses a lot, and now Liverpool have a 6'3 Belgian waiting for them.. 😉

Hmm, exactly as I feared 🙁 A 4.5m Pool defender is glorious though, and I hope all the best for Tekkers. He has all the tools to thrive w/ Clyne + Moreno/Gomez whipping crosses in, plus support from Milner, Hendo, the Firm & Cout. Looks like it will be a great season from an attacking perspective for you guys

Looks more a CB to me. The concencus in the pub this afternoon, between season ticket holders, is that Moreno will start. That said, given an opportunity, Gomez will take it. I'll wait and see. Like the look of him as a Pool fan though.

What do you guys think? This is my draft as of today

    Ruth-Myhill
    Azpi-Kolarov-Clyne-Mings-Yoshida
    Haz-Sterling-Hendo-Cazorla-Ritchie
    Kane-Benteke-Deeney

Not really sure. I want to bring in Aguero and get rid of Benteke for GW3 and on. Need cheaper options in the back. Some 4m defenders and maybe a cheaper option in the middle. Appreciate all the help.

    Kolarov or cheaper def
    Cazorla or Walcott?
    Deeney or Sakho?

      • 13 Years

      Who's Ruth?

Like the Kolarov pick. Not a fan of Clyne's fixtures. You could downgrade and save money. Francis, statistically, is better pick than Mings. Yoshida won't play. Get Huth instead.

I like the front 8. I'd squeeze the 1m from Clyne to a 4.5, and upgrade Deeney to Sakho. Then you can rotate Sakho and Ritchie.

      Kolarov
      Walcott
      Sakho

He goes in and out of form and we don't know how he'll fair under Ranieri so I'd steer clear. I'd prefer Wilson(Bou) who plays at villa or maybe Bamford playing at norwich. Wilson is only 5.5 too. Personally I'd get Pelle for 8m instead of Tekkers, til Tekkers gets settled, to take advantage of the Soton fixtures. Then get Sakho or another 6.5 forward

    Schmeichel
    Azpi / Mertersacker / Huth

    Costa / Rooney / Giroud

    Hennersey / Sinclair / Coates / S Taylor

Giroud to a Defoe/Wison/Sahko. Money spent on midfield and it's looking better. (Save 0.5 to change Saylor, he won't play!)

Yes mate, been on that template since the start, had Wilson/Deeney upfront and a bigger mid but not sure that Wilson will score bigger than Ritchie or Sterling more than Giroud in the first 3 weeks.

What do you think when it's laid out like that?

This all hinges on Giroud starting and playing well tomorrow, Steven Taylor doesn't need to at just yet, he will be 3rd sub every week.

    5. Dreaming of Irene
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

Looks decent if the forwards hit form and stay fit. Not sure about the Giroud and Wallcott double as they could well be competing for the same place so the other could hit you with 1pt cameo. Think you are right to assess this tomorrow. If Giroud starts and does well, and you still want double ARS you may be better to switch Wally to Caz or Ozil. There are good alternatives in this price point in other teams so easy to switch with just the one transfer so you can be flexible and plan for favourable fixture runs.
Double Leicester bit of a risk at the back but Coates can spread that risk if you bench Huth some of the first 6 weeks. Presume you would start Sinclair ahead of Albrighton some weeks.
Actually that's a lot of Leicester you are packing - maybe consider Butland and start Hennesy weeks 1 and 3 (but close your eyes and pray for save points week 7.) Or just ship Albrighton - Leicester has a few MIDs incoming, so not sure if he will be safe starter anyway.
      Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, excellent stuff.

I plan to play Huth in GW2 than Coates in 2 & 3, play the AOA in GW4 (when I will have Benteke and Aguero in place of Rooney & Costa) and than tweak the defence if need be in 5 so Huth and Schmeichel will only really double up in GW2 at home to Sunderland which I feel is quite a strong chance of a clean sheet.

        I

Sanchez is missing for Aug so I quite fancy Walcott and Giroud to get a month together, WEST HAM, Palace, LIVERPOOL & Newcastle had goals in them last year which is why I fancy the risk, saying that, they both have to perform today to go against the popular template of the 5.5 striker and bigger mid.

Plan on rotating Albrighton and Sinclair mate, feel there could be some joy there as both are offensive, both have had strong pre seasons so could start well and they have nice runs to open up with.

They would only double up in GW1 that should say, Schmeichel got something silly like 80 saves last year, the top was around 140 but he played 1000 mins less so I'm hoping he will benefit from the new rules this year as he's a bit of a save beast.

      LIVERPOOLS POTENTIAL FPL GOLD

Liverpool provide a potential FPL points goldmine at great prices, from Defence right through to the Strikers role. But my question is, who are most likely to be starters.

Joe Gomez 4.5m , Jordan Ibe 5.0m Danny Ings 7.5m all modestly priced by FPL as it's assumed they won't clock up too many minutes. So far all three have been regular starters with Gomez & Ibe particularly providing stand out performances.

My suspicion is that Gomez & Ibe may well start the season, what happens after that? Who knows.....what do the FPL community think?
