Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

The race for Charlie Austin's signature is hotting up with West Ham joining Newcastle in pursuing the QPR striker, according to The Mail on Sunday.

After Enner Valencia suffered a 'significant' injury in the Hammers' Europa League qualifier in midweek, Slaven Bilic is now in the hunt for another forward and has identified Austin as a potential option.

Been on this team for a while now..

    Ruddy/Rudd

    Darmian, Cresswell, Huth, Francis, Coates

    Hazard, Depay, Ozil, Tadic, Ritchie

    Rooney, Lukaku, Sakho

More than willing to take a -4 in GW1 to jump on a firing midfielder and to replace Lukaku. I think that defence sets me up nicely for the beginning of the season.

    Glaring errors?

No City cover. Granted tough fixtures for first 3. Silva a cracking differential in my book. I'd like to see Depay bang one before I commit. Could get off to a flyer and prove me wrong. Think Roo is cover enough from Utd from the off.

Jaime Lorenzo, the president of Raqui San Isidro - Pedro's first professional club in Spain - claimed the World Cup winner has told his family and friends he will leave the Champions League winners.

"The player was here working at a soccer school a few weeks back and his friends already know he is going," Lorenzo told Cadena Ser.

"And the other day I saw Pedro’s mum in a furniture shop and she told me that he is going to England. I believe it's a good challenge for him and it means he will get more playing time."

    A) What's all this talk about Francis not being nailed on?
    B) Is Oshea the safest best from the Sunderland backline ?
    C) Since Wilson plays in a more attacking team, doesn't that make him a better option than Deeney?

New York's pitch is so narrow, it looks ridiculous.

Any thoughts on this? Think it looks decent for the frst couple of weeks:

    Butland / Myhill
    Mertesacker / Darmian / Aldeweireld / Cedric / O'Shea
    Hazard / Walcott / Sterling / Henderson / Wanyama
    Pelle / Rooney / Wilson

    0.5m in the bank

Potential problems are triple Southampton (though Wanyama will never for me) and possibly a bit heavy at the back, but don't see that many good cheap defensive options yet this season. Leicester have good fixtures but I think they'll bomb under Ranieri sadly.

Also, pretty straightforward to get Aguero in for GW4.

    Which is better?

    A) Ruddy+Azpil+Mane

    Or

    B) Courtois+Bassong+Ozil

So I am going to repeat, cause I am not sure everyone got the logic behind my idea.

Sperroni 4,5m is injured so that leaves:

    Hennessey and McCarthy both 4.0m

So for 8.0m you have starting combo keepers. What is there not to like? Also CPL are good team, Jose even praised them

They're an attacking team. They don't keep many clean sheets. But it's a nice idea for an 8.0 pair, especially if you switch both in an early WC.

Hey, I think I have finally got my team right

    Panti, Henessey
    Clyne, Ivan, Huth, Bassong, Cedric
    Milner, Wally, Sinclair, Mane, Haz
    Kane, Pelle, Deeney.

Only thing missing is Ozil. Should I get him for Milner.
Milner is in great preseason form same as Ozil.

Is Ozil is a must have. Whom should I downgrade to?

Not sure if I would double up on Liverpool, although I think Ibe will be hidden gem this year. If your gonna go double Liverpool I'd rather keep Siggy & drop Chadli, personally.
