Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Sergio Aguero returns to the scoresheet and the Fantasy Football radar, prompting many to hit the transfer trail as City’s early season form continued in style with a 3-0 win over champions Chelsea. Meanwhile, in the Arsenal camp, Alexis Sanchez compounded the need for squad surgery with a performance at Selhurst Park that reminded us of his own Fantasy appeal. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s encounters…

Aguero Paves The Way For City Victory

Sergio Aguero announced his return to the starting lineup with a goal as Manuel Pellegrini’s side recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner carved out a wealth of shooting opportunities at the Etihad, with no striker mustering more attempts (seven) than Aguero this Gameweek. Non-owners will doubtless now be clamouring to recruit the 13.0-priced marksman ahead of City’s excellent run of fixtures (eve, WAT, cry, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU) – particularly when the league’s other top-end forwards (Wayne Rooney and Diego Costa) have yet to find their groove.

Indeed, Aguero’s performance provided the catalyst for a frenzy of transfer activity which has seen him claim over 100,000 new owners in the Gameweek to this point. This is likely to lead to the Argentine’s first rise in price in the next 24-hours.

David Silva carded a brace of assists to compliment his assist against West Bromwich Albion – earning two bonus points in the process – while Yaya Toure combined well with Aguero to set him up for City’s opener. Both players currently sit around the 10% ownership mark, with Raheem Sterling (19% ownership) still the more favoured route into City’s attack. Sterling’s ownership is, however, in decline having sustained almost 50,000 sales in the Gameweek so far as a result of Silva and Toure’s recent returns.

Having failed to register a single goal last term, Vincent Kompany powered home his second header in as many outings, boosting his points tally to 25 for the season. In light of Chelsea’s faltering rearguard and the absence of Leighton Baines, the talismanic captain is emerging as a prime pick among the premium defenders. Kompany has claimed almost 80,000 new owners as price teeters on the brink of another FPL price rise to 6.2.

On that note, Aleksandar Kolarov (5.5) is becoming more difficult to ignore as an alternative. The Serbian’s rampaging runs look certain to harvest attacking returns given his propensity to join the attack and his service from a dead-ball. Gael Clichy’s return to the bench might deter potential investors due to the threat of rotation, with Pellegrini’s teamsheet at Everton of keen interest.

Blues Exposed As Hazard Falters

Eden Hazard blanked for the second Gameweek running as the Blues’ defence was picked apart by Manuel Pellegrini’s troops. Only Sunderland (26) have conceded more shots inside the box than Chelsea over the opening two Gameweeks, prompting Branislav Ivanovic’s 30.4% ownership to weigh up their options.

Hazard missed a golden opportunity to equalise with what was only his second attempt at goal across the opening two fixtures. In the wake of Alexis Sanchez’ starring display against Crystal Palace, some Hazard owners might be contemplating a straight swap for the explosive winger. The fact that Chelsea face off against West Brom and Palace in the next two Gameweeks bolsters the appeal of holding tight. However, Hazard has already been sold more than any other midfielder in the Gameweek to this point and is second only to Wayne Rooney in overall sales.

John Terry – who played every single minute of the previous campaign – was replaced by Kurt Zouma at half time, having struggled to contend with the pace and movement of City’s elusive forward line. Although that tactical decision is unlikely to portend a severe reduction in playing time, this new threat of rotation is certainly worth factoring in.

Sanchez Return Inspires Gunners Win

Olivier Giroud bounced back from a listless performance in Arsenal’s season-opener to open his account with a sublime first-time finish as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park.

The France international was again favoured over Theo Walcott in the lone striker role, much to the dismay of the latter’s 6.8% ownership – who will now certainly be engineering exit plans – over 50,000 have sold Walcott on in the Gameweek with his price already dropping to 8.9.

Alexis Sanchez marked his first start of the campaign with an assist, after his header was diverted into the Eagles’ net by Damien Delaney. The Chilean livewire was a constant menace to the home defeat and, based on his display, is surely likely to cement “untouchable” status on the Arsenal teamsheet. Sanchez is still owned by under 10% of FPL managers to this point, despite heavy investment overnight.

Mesut Ozil edged ahead of Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla in the contest between Arsenal’s 8.5-priced midfielders, chalking up an assist and two bonus points for a seven-point haul. The German playmaker is arguably the least prone to rotation among the trio but has registered the fewest attempts at goal (three) in these early stages.

Hector Bellerin reclaimed a starting berth on his return from the treatment room. With match-ups against Newcastle United and Stoke City in the next three Gameweeks (LIV, new, STO), the Gunners should stand a decent chance of securing their first clean sheet of the season.

WBA assets Myhill & J.Olsson, how safe are they?

Olsson only played one game, so I suppose very much rotation threat and need to stay clear?
How has Myhill played, even if they sign another keeper, will he walk to starting eleven?

Need to pick two from Ruddy, Butland, Myhill, McCarthy, Schmeicel.

every season there seems to be certain pivotal decisions in the fantasy season.
such as two years ago buying or not buying yaya early in his run or getting ramsey
last season getting kane early enough, and even in small part buying terry near end of season.

Is it too early to say selling or not selling Chelsea players for city players will be a pivotal decision this year?

Normally I don't like WC-ing early in the season as I liked to keep it for DGWs near the end of the season.

However, is anyone else tempted by the WC purely because we have to use one before the 28th (I think) of December?

I guess you could WC just before the deadline in December and then use your other one when the DGWs come

    1. n-doggg
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

This is exactly my reasoning and I have WC. Although my team was pretty bad I would have waited to use in DGW towards end of season. As we get another one anyway can't see a better time to use the first one now

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The Rough With the Smooth – Gameweek 2

Welcome to the latest in our new regular article series gathering our community’s tales of joy and woe from the last Gameweek in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. This will look at the key decisions made that proved either inspired or saw overall ranks plummet. We also find out what lessons our community has learned from their key captaincy, transfer and benching decisions over the week.

This week saw owners of Aguero and other Manchester City assets delighted, while those who kept faith in Wayne Rooney were left disappointed.

What was your key decision this week? What effect did it have on your rank? What lesson did you leanr?

Effect on rank: plummeted to 3 million from 2.6 mill.

      Smooth(ish)

Brought in Mahrez for Ritchie and had him benched for Sinclair until used the comparison tool. Last second change to start Mahrez. Additional goals from Aguero (capt) and Chadli with an assist form Ozil also helped me to a respectable all out score of 46. Defense was a bit of a right off though, only accumulating 4 points from 4 players.

Don't be afraid to take a hit.

I had a -4 on the cards of Rooney - aguero and Walcott - payet. I chose to save and now I'm sat on 15 pts 2 to play. Rank 2.9m. Now I've been raged into wildcard active.

Didn't think it could get any worse after scoring 25 last week for a rank of 2.3mil. Saved the transfer so I could better assess this week. I'm currently on 15 points with Henderson to come and a rank of 2.8 mil! And I've wildcarded now so the saved transfer is wasted! Worst start to the season ever! What a way to come back down to earth after finishing 61st last year

Smooth - without Mahrez I'd be toast - 25 of my 66 points. Thank the stars Theo had a rest - never so happy to see Gibbs on a touchline...

Rough - same as many others really so many 1s and 2s. Captain Tekkers to the rescue tonight? Not holding breath...

Had 100 million to spend on a team. Meticulously weighing every decision during three weeks in preseason.
      Result of GW1 and GW2 combined: 1 goal, 1 assist, 0 CS, 0 bonus, 4 YC.

      I played my Wild Card.

Removed Sterling, Walcott, Hazard, Rooney, Kane, Coates

In- Mignolet,Darmian, Ayew, Payet, Yaya, Mahrez, Aguero, Gomis, Pelle.

Caught all their price rises and points apart from Mahrez who I had benched.
Rank- Jumped from 1.7m > 300k with Migs and Gomez to play.

Fantasy Football is a dynamic game. We need to keep up with the form players.
      Go with your gut.
People are taking -8, -12 hits reasoning- " Im holding on to my WC till later."
I would rather WC early to get the early risers/form then use the -4,-8 hits later to change things round.

      Key decision this week.
With 8 strong attackers this coming week do I play my All Out Attack chip this week?
      Sanchez, Yaya, Payet, Ayew, Mahrez
      Aguero, Gomis, Pelle

If I didnt it would mean benching Mahrez or Pelle for Gomez, Huth or Oxford.

In uber dullard style I made no transfers and captained Wayne Rooney.

My rank is now 1.96 million. I have 55 points total and 25 of them are from Mahrez.

I don't even know what the lesson is.

      1. week captain - Walcott 1 point
      2. week captain - Pelle 1 point

at least its Aguero from now on.

I got an assist and some bonus from Ozil.

That's about as smooth as this bed of nails gets so far.

      More Rough but one Smooth

I had saved my transfer and stuck with Walcott. He did not play but my first-sub is Ward. 10 Jammy points of the highest order.

Key decision: Brought Gomis and Payet instead of Hazard and Deeney of -4.

Effect on rank: From 1.6M to 806k and still have Benteke (C).

Lessons learned: Don't be afraid to drop a player with high ownership an explosive material. If I kept them, they would brought me 3 points, but I got 15 with Gomis and Payet.

Smooth - Walcott -> Payet before the price drop/rise on Friday. Handy cash for Aguero plus points.
Rough - Payet scored half of my points this week as the rest of my team is rubbish.
Lesson learnt - my risk averse strategy gameweek 1 this year has not paid off and I should have taken a few more risks. Do I now take the ultimate risk and wildcard early to stem the rot?

Smooth- Decision to save 0.5m and go with Myhill over Panti now looks a good choice.

Rough- Walcott not playing ment my first sub Targett comes in for 0 points!!

I have Mahrez, Martin and Ward on my bench this week.

I probably wouldn't change the decision in hindsight, because you have to make the best decision with the available information.

But it's still pretty maddening to look at.

The team I picked for my Dead Team Challenge is massively outscoring my FPL team.

Over two weeks my FPL team has managed exactly 1 goal (Pelle) and 1 assist (Cedric), 0 Clean sheets and my captain has either been subbed in or carded. And after the Liverpool v. Bournemouth game, I'm nearly dead last because I don't have Clyne or Benteke. I decided to wait until now to make transfers because I figured GW1 was a fluke.

I had my best finish ever last season, nothing compared to most people here but I made the top 100,000. I was looking forward to this season, and now have 18 points on this week to make a grand total of 40 overall. Rank still being updated but I figure I'm going to be over 3 million.

Worst start ever. My two worst game weeks ever. Nothing has gone right at all.

But hey, at least my dead team is doing well.

And frustrating as it is, at least I don't have that much farther to fall. Sooner or later, although it is looking most definitely like later, I will move up. At some point.

Rougher than using sandpaper to wipe my @ss.

Rooney blanking as captain with literally everyone else in my team except Benteke blanking.

Walcott's drop in price foiled my perfect plan of upgrading rooney -> aguero and walcott -> sanchez for no hit... though sterling -> toure is an arguable upgrade.

Collectively my team of Schmeichel, Azpilicueta, Mertesacker, Bassong, Richards, Ritchie, Fabregas, Sterling, Benteke, Wilson, Rooney, Walcott, Francis and Fletcher have a combined for a total of 1 goal and 1 assist for the season over 2 weeks (Richards was benched in GW1 so no clean sheet)

Team looks ok on paper but rank of 2.8m and last in my work league (behind a guy who didnt enter a week 1 team to boot).

Key learning: I haven't quite learnt yet as I'm refusing to use my WC and keeping the faith in most of the team I started the season with

Anyone else find this Otamendi deal very strange?

I appreciate he had a very good season but before that he wasn't particularly highly rated compared to Mangala. Mangala's also had a season to settle into the PL, has started well in the first two games and is younger. Seems bizarre to me.

Yep but they've obviously decided they'd rather have Otamendi this season.

And being loaned out as a non-youngster is normally just a first step to being sold.

as good as they seem, the Southampton attake, pelle and tadic never really made points last year, more value to be found in their defence regardless of what people say about mane....

      pelle to lukaku maybe

I would take the view that Citeh are going to walk the PL this year and your team needs a spine of their players i.e.

      - Bad K in defence
      - Silva or Yoyo in mid
      - Kun

I'm giving him another week or 2 because fixtures are good, but SOT don't look too strong defensively at the moment.

Alternatives at 5.0 I guess would be Williams, Reid/Ogbonna

I see loads have already put aguero in for rooney either this gameweek going on or for next weekend, some involving the wildcard too.
much as utd are not convincing at the mo - isn't it worth waiting the extra week?
Newcastle at home is a decent last shot for him....

oh yes I put myself through 90 mins of tedium so yes I understand it.
just of the opinion that its worth waiting that extra week with the Newcastle game coming next.
don't get me wrong whatever the outcome of that i'm selling for gw4 but you know aguero, it would be typical if he got injured v everton.
can't help feeling its more than worth waiting the extra week

Fair point, I'm not sure. At that stage I guess I could downgrade a def and get a 5m keeper in

Alternative would be Kompany to Kolarov and get Fabianksi, but not sure how nailed Kolarov is once Clichy is back

I'd personally downgrade Kompany. Get rid of Cedric despite the fixtures - Soton look really exposed at the back without Schneiderlin

      Would upgrade Ayew
