Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Sergio Aguero returns to the scoresheet and the Fantasy Football radar, prompting many to hit the transfer trail as City’s early season form continued in style with a 3-0 win over champions Chelsea. Meanwhile, in the Arsenal camp, Alexis Sanchez compounded the need for squad surgery with a performance at Selhurst Park that reminded us of his own Fantasy appeal. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s encounters…

Aguero Paves The Way For City Victory

Sergio Aguero announced his return to the starting lineup with a goal as Manuel Pellegrini’s side recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner carved out a wealth of shooting opportunities at the Etihad, with no striker mustering more attempts (seven) than Aguero this Gameweek. Non-owners will doubtless now be clamouring to recruit the 13.0-priced marksman ahead of City’s excellent run of fixtures (eve, WAT, cry, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU) – particularly when the league’s other top-end forwards (Wayne Rooney and Diego Costa) have yet to find their groove.

Indeed, Aguero’s performance provided the catalyst for a frenzy of transfer activity which has seen him claim over 100,000 new owners in the Gameweek to this point. This is likely to lead to the Argentine’s first rise in price in the next 24-hours.

David Silva carded a brace of assists to compliment his assist against West Bromwich Albion – earning two bonus points in the process – while Yaya Toure combined well with Aguero to set him up for City’s opener. Both players currently sit around the 10% ownership mark, with Raheem Sterling (19% ownership) still the more favoured route into City’s attack. Sterling’s ownership is, however, in decline having sustained almost 50,000 sales in the Gameweek so far as a result of Silva and Toure’s recent returns.

Having failed to register a single goal last term, Vincent Kompany powered home his second header in as many outings, boosting his points tally to 25 for the season. In light of Chelsea’s faltering rearguard and the absence of Leighton Baines, the talismanic captain is emerging as a prime pick among the premium defenders. Kompany has claimed almost 80,000 new owners as price teeters on the brink of another FPL price rise to 6.2.

On that note, Aleksandar Kolarov (5.5) is becoming more difficult to ignore as an alternative. The Serbian’s rampaging runs look certain to harvest attacking returns given his propensity to join the attack and his service from a dead-ball. Gael Clichy’s return to the bench might deter potential investors due to the threat of rotation, with Pellegrini’s teamsheet at Everton of keen interest.

Blues Exposed As Hazard Falters

Eden Hazard blanked for the second Gameweek running as the Blues’ defence was picked apart by Manuel Pellegrini’s troops. Only Sunderland (26) have conceded more shots inside the box than Chelsea over the opening two Gameweeks, prompting Branislav Ivanovic’s 30.4% ownership to weigh up their options.

Hazard missed a golden opportunity to equalise with what was only his second attempt at goal across the opening two fixtures. In the wake of Alexis Sanchez’ starring display against Crystal Palace, some Hazard owners might be contemplating a straight swap for the explosive winger. The fact that Chelsea face off against West Brom and Palace in the next two Gameweeks bolsters the appeal of holding tight. However, Hazard has already been sold more than any other midfielder in the Gameweek to this point and is second only to Wayne Rooney in overall sales.

John Terry – who played every single minute of the previous campaign – was replaced by Kurt Zouma at half time, having struggled to contend with the pace and movement of City’s elusive forward line. Although that tactical decision is unlikely to portend a severe reduction in playing time, this new threat of rotation is certainly worth factoring in.

Sanchez Return Inspires Gunners Win

Olivier Giroud bounced back from a listless performance in Arsenal’s season-opener to open his account with a sublime first-time finish as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park.

The France international was again favoured over Theo Walcott in the lone striker role, much to the dismay of the latter’s 6.8% ownership – who will now certainly be engineering exit plans – over 50,000 have sold Walcott on in the Gameweek with his price already dropping to 8.9.

Alexis Sanchez marked his first start of the campaign with an assist, after his header was diverted into the Eagles’ net by Damien Delaney. The Chilean livewire was a constant menace to the home defeat and, based on his display, is surely likely to cement “untouchable” status on the Arsenal teamsheet. Sanchez is still owned by under 10% of FPL managers to this point, despite heavy investment overnight.

Mesut Ozil edged ahead of Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla in the contest between Arsenal’s 8.5-priced midfielders, chalking up an assist and two bonus points for a seven-point haul. The German playmaker is arguably the least prone to rotation among the trio but has registered the fewest attempts at goal (three) in these early stages.

Hector Bellerin reclaimed a starting berth on his return from the treatment room. With match-ups against Newcastle United and Stoke City in the next three Gameweeks (LIV, new, STO), the Gunners should stand a decent chance of securing their first clean sheet of the season.

i noticed that spidermatt says he does it in 3 week planning phases
i have always based it around 6 weeks but have begun to think this is too long.

I look at the fixtures so i depends. So for example I'm looking at the next six for Stoke and they only have one tricky tie - Arsenal. The rest are brilliant. So for them I'd be looking at getting a player in for the next six in mind.

Others maybe less. In gameweek 1 I had ManU players in mind for four weeks.

      All depends when fixtures change.

Arguably with ManC I'm looking at them for the next 8 weeks or so...bit more long term.

6-8 weeks from a fixture point of view i.e. I prioritise players with better fixtures over 6-8 weeks as I think it's a waste of transfers to get players in for shorter timeframes.

But I won't plan future transfers more than 2-3 weeks out

How far the ticker goes. (and sometimes not even that)

I used to plan for more, but too often do other things happen that scuppers those carefully made plans.
I remember a few seasons ago that I seemed to have a player to transfer out every week (through injury mainly - maybe suspension, can't remember) for the first 6 weeks or so.

About 3 weeks in terms of future transfers and team lineups.

I'm pretty flexible (ie I can kneejerk) and change plans. I almost prefer having to fix something each week with my squad than having the luxury of just thinking about my starting XI and saving FTs.

I usually kneejerk at the start of the season or just after a wildcard as there are usually a few players that I was 50/50 on. So this year swapping Walcott for Toure after GW1 was an easy decision. Likewise getting rid of Rooney for Aguero this week, although it was a week earlier than planned it was something on the cards since day one.

After 2 awful gameweeks and losing 0.1 on Walcott I decided I needed to bite the bullet and make changes before I lose more value and it's too late to get players in, so I've done:

Sterling, Walcott & Fabregas > Sanchez, Silva & Mahrez (-8)

    Cech
    Ivanovic | Cresswell | Cedric | Coates | Oxford
    Sanchez | Silva | Mane | Mahrez | Fletcher
    Aguero | Sakho | Wilson

Mahrez maybe chasing points but hopefully he will at least gain 0.2 to get me the 0.1 I've lost back. I don't want to miss out on getting Sanchez & Silva with the inevitable price changes.

    Look good?

This is probably a week for you to use your wildcard, because that defence needs a bit of a shake up as well. Also, I'm not sure you want to be in a position where either Fletcher or Wilson HAS to play every week.

Deeney isn't firing, Cabaye could be better, Wait and see on Coutinho/Benteke but if they blank I wouldn't be keen, Oxford got dropped, Gomez/Targett's time is running out.

I did something similar. GW2 wildcard and 5.5 in the bank. it's a good way to get out of the blocks and get some TV early. it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's a decent strategy.

Other than Cabaye (for me), all the selections make sense.

How do you know that for a fact? I haven't seen it written anywhere that WC transfers don't count.

            How do player prices change?

Once the season has started, player prices may change by £0.1m a day, based on activity in the transfer market.

Both the formula used to calculate this change and the time of the change include variable factors, and won’t be revealed to game players.

People who do this analysis have discerned the impact of the WC on transfers, since a change last season, because eventually the likes of fplstatistics get pretty accurate with their predictions, and they found last year far less price movement on weeks when lots of WCs were used. It's very educated guesswork, but not fact.

It can only account for wildcards as an estimate (% of total transfers).

I'd say pretty much 100% of wildcarders will have introduced Kun to their side, whereas most not on a wildcard, who only made one transfer would not have had the £.

RE Everton's tricky run of fixtures.

Everton's next 8 fixtures comprise home games against Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd and away games at Spurs, Swansea, West Brom and Arsenal.

Their attacking players are favourably priced: Lukaku 8.0, Mirallas 7.0, Barkley 6.5 and Kone 5.0. Looking at the corresponding fixtures over the past two seasons (16 games in total), Everton have failed to score in only three of those games and have scored 2 or 3 goals in seven of those fixtures, with an average of 1.44 goals scored per game.

With doubts over Spurs, Chelsea & Arsenal's defence, and Everton's excellent record against Man City, are their attacking players worth investing in? 5 goals scored in first two games is only bettered by Leicester and Man City.

Every year this debate occurs and 3-4-3 wins out.

Total points from last season can be a misleading stat. You probably won't own any of your front 8 for the whole season. The points they score when you own them is what matters, not total score.

Right here she is for Gw3 ATM and as they say, good things come to those who wait. In that case, should I keep faith in hazard for another week, or jump on the Silva train before in rises in price?

        Schmeichel
        Azpi, Cedric, Ward
        Mata, Hazard, Tadic, Albrighton
        Aguero, Rooney, Deeney

        Subs: Boruc, Anya, Mings, Morgan

1Ft left, already done Puncheon > Albrighton to save a mill and make money on the rise and he also seemed a better pick than Punch in general, seemed obvious.

I'd be worried not having silva or Swansea cover next week, but would hate for hazard to explode if I ditched him. Have had that feeling too many times in the past. Shaw is someone I want long term too, however people have advised me not to take a hit to do Hazard+Cedric/Mings > Silva+Shaw.

I have 2 ft's & decided to ditch Rooney for Aguero but my only midfielder with a bad fixture is Ramsey so he goes for Redmond

Rooney & Ramsey out - Aguero & Redmond in

        Will give me
        Mignolet
        Kosc, Williams, Huth
        Hazard, Silva, Mane, Mahrez, Redmond
        Aguero (c), Sakho

        Henn, C. Wilson, Francis, Coates

        Will wc probably gw4

So what option do you like:
        (a) the above 2 trades
        (b) Ayew & Darmian in - Ramsey & Coates out (will play Rooney) or
        (c) Ayew & Kompany in - Ramsey & Coates out (play Rooney)
