Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Monday

Liverpool climb to joint-third in the top flight after a second successive 1-0 win. Christian Benteke grabs his first goal for the Anfield outfit, whilst Jordan Henderson supplies the assist before being forced off with a foot problem. Here’s the notes from Monday’s floodlit encounter…

Benteke Fires Reds To Victory

Christian Benteke came up trumps at the second time of asking, opening his Liverpool account by virtue of a controversial goal. Although Bournemouth fans will lament the linesman’s decision not to raise the offside flag after Philippe Coutinho seemingly interfered with play, Benteke’s 40% ownership were delighted to bank the Belgian’s nine-point haul in an otherwise low-scoring Gameweek.

Benteke’s prospects are mixed over the next five Gameweeks (ars, WHU, mun, NOR, AVL), with two challenging road trips balanced out by three enticing home encounters. Nonetheless, the former Aston Villa hitman will certainly fancy his chances to score at Old Trafford, having netted in both league ties against Manchester United last term.

The Reds were far from commanding but ultimately secured their second consecutive victory and clean sheet. Naturally, Fantasy managers will be drawn towards their rearguard assets, with Joe Gomez (4.6) presenting the cheapest option of the current starters. On that note, the difficulty of Liverpool’s next trio of fixtures and the threat of rotation from Alberto Moreno diminishes the 18-year-old’s appeal slightly.

Philippe Coutinho failed to register in back-to-back matches, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying: no player in the league fashioned more attempts at goal (eight) than the Brazilian playmaker in Gameweek 2, emphasising his status as the most potent goal threat in the Reds’ midfield. Of course, Roberto Firmino – who replaced Jordon Ibe in the 70th minute – harbours the potential to steal that crown away from his compatriot when he’s afforded a starting berth.

Jordan Henderson delivered his first attacking returns of the campaign with the assist for Benteke’s close-range strike. His 20.1% ownership couldn’t cheer for long, however, after the Reds captain was replaced by Emre Can at the 52-minute mark due to a foot injury. Brendan Rodgers revealed after the match that Henderson missed training during the week because of this complaint:

“He’s had a problem with the bottom of his foot. He hadn’t trained for part of the week, he was taking some painkillers with it. He did ever so well to even be out on the field. He wanted to try it, he wanted to give it a go, but you could see he was limited in his running. He did great for us in the period of time that he was on but it’s important that we get victories and it’s important that we have fit players on the field and unfortunately for him he was just in too much pain.”

Ritchie Impresses Despite Cherries Defeat

After carding a 1-0 defeat for the second week running, Bournemouth join Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion in the relegation zone. The Cherries turned out a spirited performance but failed to test Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet with enough regularity, tallying just two shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Much of the Cherries’ positive play funnelled through winger Matt Ritchie (5.9), who ranked fourth for attempts at goal (five) among midfielders this Gameweek and struck the upright with one of his efforts. In light of the south coast club’s excellent upcoming run of fixtures (whm, LEI, nor, SUN, sto, WAT), the Scotsman’s 4% ownership may well be reluctant to cut their losses just yet.

Budget forward Callum Wilson was less impressive up front alongside Joshua King, mustering just one shot all night. With places in our three-man frontlines at a premium and having already dropped to 5.4 overnight, Wilson seems unlikely to survive the chop among those managers with Wildcards active.

Eddie Howe made two changes to his opening day line-up, drafting in both Eunan O’Kane and Max Gradel for their first starts, with Dan Gosling and Marc Pugh dropping to the bench. While Wilson disappointed, it was King who made way on the hour-mark as Howe looked to revive fortunes. New signing Lee Tomlin was introduced for King and he could now threaten to work his way into the starting line-up for the trip to West Ham in Gameweek 3. At the back, popular budget option, Tyrone Mings, was again benched with Charlie Daniels retaining the left-back berth.

My question exactly. Not sure if I should gamble on him from the outset. His stats in previous seasons don't exactly make it a no brainer.

        Yeah, I like Gomis.

But somewhere down the line I would probably want to upgrade him or Diouf to Kane/Giroud/Lukaku etc.
I guess I could just do Silva -> Yaya when/if that time comes.

Yeah, I guess that's the Silva template. With Yaya, the spare cash is used to upgrade Diouf. Can't decide which one I like better.

Going to tinker a bit more. Haven't actually seen Mahrez play, so I'm just riding with it.

    Fabianski/Butland

    Kompany / Shaw / Mertesacker / Morgan / Baker

    Payet / Silva / Sanchez / Mahrez / Wanyama

    Gomis / Aguero / Deeney

0.8tb. Personally I'm not happy with Deeney, but on the other hand, in this case, the best option is to bring in Sakho , but i dont feel like doubling up on West Ham.

    Azpi | Mertesacker | Cedric | Morgan | Coates
    Hazard | Sterling | Walcott | Mahrez | Sinclair

    Should I:

    B) Sterling + Walcott + Rooney ➡ Payet + Ayew + Kun (-4), leaving me with 1m ITB
    C) Something else

Thoughts deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

i NEED to decide between yaya and silva this evening.. and its absolutely killing me. The £1.5 doesn't make much of a difference. I am leaning on Silva at the moment because I can always downgrade to Yaya if need be.

However, the burning question is: Can Yaya Toure have another similar season to 2 years ago?

Let's all agree Yaya won't be scoring as much as he did at WBA. Silva looks way more fluent up front (even more than Sterling, surprisingly), so I'd pick him if I were you.

He definitely can have that season. But I think his age and propensity to pick up niggles could limit his output and frustrate managers. We've already seen him pick up a minor groin strain and be substituted for his protection in GW1. And I think once the Champions League starts and Delph is fit, we'll see him be removed from the action a lot more and maybe even rested at times. I've gone Silva.

Look, whichever one you pick over the course of the season you will be occasionally frustrated by the other one.

I would say that over the season, if Silva stays injury free, he will outscore Yaya.

When Silva gets injured, then you can do Silva > Yaya

Right, another decision made: Kolarov it is. His bonus and assist potential swung it. Can I cope with him being rotated? Yes, far easier than with Walcott. I can now afford 2 x 4.5s to cover him and the whole squad.

Which of these front lines looks better?

    Sanchez - YYT - Chadli - Mahrez - Payet
    Aguero - Gomis - Ighalo

    or

    Silva - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Hoolahan
    Aguero - Gomis - Lukaku/Benteke

    Defense for both is:
    Mignolet - Schmeichel
    Kosc - Kompany - Williams - Francis - 4.0

Xherdan Shaqiri - Coming Up Next

So I decided to do a little digging on Stoke's new record signing, Shaqiri, having played for both Bayern and Inter in recent seasons, yet coming in at a very friendly 7m. I'll be looking at his goal scoring/assist record, along with his predicted FPL score and FPL value had he played in the premier league, as I think he could really be one to watch.

His record is quite impressive, imo, so I've decided to do a few calculations based on them...

    Bayern 12/13:

Record: 8 Goals and 13 Assists
    Minutes Played: 1911
Goal or Assist per Minute: 0.010
    Basically return/min^^^
Just to compare with some popular FPL options using 13/14 numbers:
    David Silva(9m): 0.009
    Chadli(6m): 0.007
    Ozil(9m?): 0.005
    Mata(8.5m): 0.006

I also calculated a predicted FPL score, but included 2 points for every appearance even if it was 60mins app. All very rough, but at least it's a slight indicator.

Predicted FPL score: 191 ( Admittedly, he won't get as much CS points, but without it's still 180!)
    FPL Value( Points/Per Million): Based on a 7m price - 27.3 PpM

Comparison using start of season prices. (ALL these players had A LOT more mins)
    David Silva(191p): 21.2 PpM
    Chadli(160p): 26.7 PpM
    Sigurdsson(154p): 25.7 PpM
    Fabregas(165p): 18.3 PpM

    Points Per Minute

    Shaqiri ----------0.10ppm
    Sanchez--------0.07ppm
    David Silva-----0.07ppm
    Chadli----------0.07ppm
    Fabregas-----0.06ppm
    Sigurdsson---0.06ppm

His numbers did drop slightly in the 13/14 season, but considering he was looking at loan moves to Inter, didn't get regular starts in the team, played a lot less minutes I think it's acceptable. 😉
He really should do better with regular starts with Stoke this season, and I'm sure being the club's new record signing is a huge confidence booster as well. Hope he proves his worth.

    Bayern 13/14

Record: 7 Goals and 4 Assists
    Minutes Played: 1226
Goal or Assist per Minute: 0.009
    COMPARISON:
    David Silva(9m): 0.009
    Chadli(6m): 0.007
    Ozil(9m?): 0.005
    Mata(8.5m): 0.006

Predicted FPL score: 122 ( ~700 less minutes than 13/14)
    FPL Value( Points/Per Million): Based on a 7m price - 17.4PpM

Comparison using start of season prices. (ALL these players had A LOT more mins)
    SHAQIRI(122p): 17.4PpM
    David Silva(191p): 21.2 PpM
    Chadli(160p): 26.7 PpM
    Sigurdsson(154p): 25.7 PpM
    Fabregas(165p): 18.3 PpM

    Points per Minute

    Shaqiri ----------0.10ppm
    Sanchez--------0.07ppm
    David Silva-----0.07ppm
    Chadli----------0.07ppm
    Fabregas-----0.06ppm
    Sigurdsson---0.06ppm

Now, I'm sure some of these numbers are skewed in some way, and they all have their faults, so I'm not saying Shaqiri is now the best FPL option in the game. But, it does give us an indicator that he is a very very good option, and is more than capable of producing goals, assists and thus a bag load of FPL points. Also, with FPL pricing him at just 7m, I think he's an absolute bargain for someone of his quality.

Also, consider Stoke's upcoming fixtures and you might wanna jump on a little early.
In their next 10, they face:
nor, WBA, LEI, BOU, avl, swa, WAT, and new.

I'm very tempted to hop on right now even before he's had a minute for Stoke - he's fully fit, had a full preseason, and was set to start last week before the suspsension so should start this week. Up against Norwich this week, it's a tempting punt...

That is true, and is a limitation, but this simply serves as an indicator, I'm not saying he will replicate it, but he definitely has the potential to.

If you're a dud in a Bayern side, you're still not going to score any goals/assists. Have to have some quality to play around with Ribery, Muller and Robben.

I don't rate him at all so I may be biased but my biggest worry about Shaq is that he is used to play in a dominating team and now he wont.

It's easier to come off the bench and score points, maybe after the job has been done.

His sub appearances range from 1minute-45minutes, and most of his output came from starts.

That's silly anyway, in FPL you just want points, doesn't matter wether it's off the bench or from a start, you still get the points.

Ahh, I see now...Stoke won't have him on the bench. It's late, I'm not thinking straight, my apologies. 😉

But still, most of his output came from starts. I can't be arsed to check but it might even be nothing from subs.

Top research, cheers! But the obvious problem is he was in teams dominating their leagues and cups at least with Basel and Bayern anyway. The question is can he do it on a rainy night in Stoke, I for one am interested but will keep a close eye this week and take it from there.

Yeap, had a bit on his Switerland record in the opening paragraph, but realised most of the para was similar to the FFS article on him so decided to leave it out.

Not sure what you mean with the 2nd part.

Plus, he is able to continute with this level of output for Switzerland, he basically carries them.

His international record for Switzerland where he gets regular starts is even more impressive: 17 goals and 11 assists over 46 appearances (37 starts).

Top creator for Inter Milan as well, out of the whole team.

I believe he meant bayern dominated teams and scored an average of 4 goals per game in the Bundesliga (not sure if this is true or not) so he was sharing in those goals however stoke probably scores less than 2 goals per game in prem. I agree with all your points though and I've always liked shaq so definitely monitoring him closely

love watching him play. he is a player who can create for himself and has proven himself at every stage (world cup, bundesliga, champion's league, etc). every time he is on the pitch you notice him, he is a steal for 7.0, should have been 7.5 easily. inter are doing a firesale to avoid FFP sanctions

If you can stretch the funds to get clyne then I would do that.
I was at the game last night and it seems that Gomez, Skrtel and Lovren have been charged with just defending whereas Clyne has a licence to attack. So much more chance of getting attacking points from Clyne.
I would say that Gomez seems pretty nailed though.

Based upon Moreno's cameo against Bournemouth last night, it will be interesting to see if Gomez starts away at Arsenal next week.

Experience could be key in Rodgers thinking.

I don't think so, Moreno came on for Coutinho (ridiculous but true) and was rampaging down the left wing as a winger.

For defensive solidity it definitely seems that Gomez has got the nod. When Liverpool had the ball, Gomez moved inside to form a 3 with Skrtel and Lovren whilst Clyne drifted wide and further up the pitch. Seemed to me that this was a conscious decision to have more cover at the back.
For Moreno to come back in I think there would have to be a change to 3 at the back and then he could come into a midfield 5. Not much chance of that at the moment with defensive performances much improved and results going our way.

Apologies if this is a bit long-winded!

I think it's more nuanced than just what Stones' ability warrants. He is worth an unbelievable amount to us, because without him our only recognised centre back is a 33 year old Jagielka. If we can't find a couple of high quality centre backs, we cannot sell Stones.

    Butland / McCarthy
    Kolarov / Olson / Richards / Gomez / 4.5
    Hazard / Sanchez / Yaya / Mahrez / Shelvey
Aguero / Diouf / Sahko (to Berahino when he moves)

If / when Clichy returns to the fold I'd plan to shift Kolo to a 5m and upgrade on of the 4.5's to a 5m (i.e. Toby + Cedric)

Anyone else not played any enhancer yet? (Wildcard or chips)

Hoping to leave all three chips til the second half of the season and play wildcard around Xmas time. That is unless my team gets decimated. Personally I wouldn't play a wildcard just because of two low scores. I'd like a sizeable sample of low scores (i.e. around 5 weeks) before debating using my wildcard this early.
