Tempted into dealing our Wildcards by yet another “mediocre” Gameweek, Granville and I go through almost the entire episode before Jonty reveals he’s weakened and gone “active”. It’s a revelation that almost has us both logging off and reaching for our own panic buttons.

Before that dramatic finale, we find salvation via another bout of “rough the smooth”, cheering ourselves with tales of Gameweek totals which dip below even our miserable tallies.

We also take a further round of community questions, forcing me to “fess up” on Theo Walcott, while Granville laments Wayne Rooney’s form and the three of us tackle the merits of Mahrez, Ozil and loading up on City assets.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Liverpool have offered Mamadou Sakho a new five year contract.

Not gonna go near Lovren then, even if he is 1st choice for now

On my WC, so about as bad as it has for most!

Azpi and Rooney in GW1, and Chadli, Payet and Benteke (C) in GW2 my only players to score more than 2 points so far.

Yet to have a CS, very happy to be ditching my Sunderland double up (Panti and Coates).

  2. Wild card team structure

Morning all - I posted this yesterday, but didn't get much of a response and wouldn't mind some thoughts from a new crowd.

I've been hypothesising, and thinking about the structure of current WC frontlines.

Few people, as far as I'm aware, honestly believe that Gomis, Diouf, Sakho and other similarly priced options will be in there for the long haul as 2nd strikers. 3rd strikers perhaps, but the dearth of attractive options in the higher bracket is the main reason currently causing a lot of:

    Kun - Gomis - Diouf/Sakho

The problem I see though is that inevitably (and likely relatively soon) one of the 8+ strikers will emerge as a clear favourite. Whether that be Benteke, Kane, Costa or even Lukaku, we've all then got a bit of a problem. There's not really enough 'room' shall we say to downgrade one of these mid-priced strikers to a still playing/somewhat potent striker (e.g. a 5.5) and upgrade the other to the desired target.

That would then force a midfield transfer. Lets have a look at the template midfield:

    Silva - Sanchez - Payet - Mahrez - 4.5

Mahrez is too cheap to be a downgradeable option. Payet, especially if targetting the more expensive strikers such as Costa or Kane, is still too cheap to downgrade to a valid option for a 3rd midfielder. Even to get Benteke, a Payet downgrade might have to be to a mid less than 6. And as a 3rd mid? Hoolahan isn't particularly enticing (sorry Jonty).

Which leaves Silva and Sanchez. But the whole idea of bringing in these 2 players is that, barring injury or suspension, they are intended for the long haul. With City's fixtures, whether Silva plays to expectations or not, you're unlikely to want to shift. And so Sanchez remains. Explosive and strong backup captaincy potential should Kun be stuttering.

Assuming funds aren't still tied up in a 7mil Ivanovic, there's not much forthcoming from the defence either, accumulating in a non-too desirable predicament.

    Which begs the following questions:

    1) Do we forego one of the heavy-hitting mids, most likely Sanchez now, to pre-empt the arrival of a strong 8+ striker by including one from this price range in our WCs?

    2) Do we try and manipulate budgets to keep the heavy-hitters AND incorporate say an 8 (Pelle) or 8.5 (Tekkers) now so as to make future switches far more accessible?

    3) Or is it perhaps best to keep with the template, and accept that the emergence of a strong mid-high priced striker will require some hits for restructuring?

That's just my thought process, as I'm trying to work it out for myself, but I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on the topic.

I'm not on a wild card, but if I was I'd lean towards the Aguero and two mid priced forwards. I don't see another heavy hitter being needed in the immediate future when Aguero will be captained most GWs. I don't see Sanchez as being needed though either, I think one of the 8.5m Arsenal mids will offer better value if you just stick with one. Cazorla will start getting pens and Ramsey will start knocking in those chances

Well, at the end of the day, you can't have everyone. Having Aguero in the team forces compromises. It may be that you need to stick with two cheaper striker options, but there's plenty of them about. Sakho, Diouf, Vardy, Wilson, Deeney etc. Can just bring in the form players from that pool of cheaper strikers. And if someone like Kane really does light up, a hit to restructure isnt the end of the world.

I suppose not. The sticking point is that we all know that one of those higher-priced strikers will come into form, and it's the question of whether we try and preempt it.

Nonetheless, you're right in that right now, there is a glut of 5.5-7 strikers certainly capable enough in the short term.

appreciate the thought that's gone into this first of all
would a 4.5/5.0 throwaway striker not solve this issue, you could have a more expensive mid (depay 8.5) and if he flops, swap with the striker next to aguero (gomis/diouf etc)??

Very good post and it sums up my problems at the moment as well. Its difficult to know the best route to take at this stage. Aguero, Silva and Sanchez cost 34m, over a third of the budget on 3 players. Does such investment justify the damage done to the remainder of the team. Hard to know.

your first big paragraph says "for the long haul" and its good to plan but you and everyone's perfectly laid plans will be laid to sh!t 2 or 3 weeks from now. they dont ever work out. worry about the present, this week, next week, 2 or 3 weeks after that. i check the 6 week ticker to, and use it as much as the next guy. remember, Aguero's hamstrings are manufactured by Play-Doh Corporation so at some point you will have 13.5 to spend. 😉

That's an argument in favour of the flexibility afforded by having at least one in that mid-higher priced bracket though isn't it?

If we can assume that the players who are most favourable now, Diouf, Gomis, Sakho etc., will likely not be in a few weeks time, why not save yourself the hassle and only pick 1 for the short-term, and stick in say Benteke who's both more useful as a placeholder (allows easier access to the higher price point) and more likely to turn out to be a good option for more than just a few weeks.

Then again, your point about Kun's hamstrings is certainly relevant, as much as we don't wish to admit it 😛

This is a really helpful post. My response to the question you raise is this: I am going 3-5-2 with Depay. Depay is a kind of punt. If he comes good I won't worry about the Bentekes, Kanes, or Costas of the world. But if he flops, or even if he is just OK but big-hitter forwards start to shine, then I will drop him for a 4.5 and have whatever I need to upgrade to the Next Big Thing.

        Reasonable stuff, but overthinking it..
I'm on 1) as I started with Aguero and Rooney, and agree, there's no standout Rooney replacement in the same price bracket.
I guess it's the old balance the budget across the positions argument, and price is no guarantee of points..
I generally have expensive candidates on deathrow in each position for flexibility- atm that's Azpi, Mane, and Roo...

Not really. They are just the players I want and it comes to less than 100m. I have learned that I don't have to spend it all.

If I stick it into Sanchez for the sake of it I then have to use 2FTs to spend it. This way I can get Hazard, Costa, Sanchez or anyone else I want immediately.

It gets worse because I'll be transitioning to 4-4-2 and the cash in the bank may get up to 6m before I start spending it. It all depends when I bring Hazard in and I won't do that till I see the signs. 😕

I think I'm in the 2 camp. playing Kun/ Gom/ Ighalo but keeping funds to transfer in a striker in the price range you suggest depending on fixtures, except when I want to play 343 when Ighalo gets a good fixture.

i.e will mostly play 352 and use transfer each week, swapping Gom to someone I fancy more if the Swans have a nasty fixture. I have to keep a million or so in reserves to do this.

My forward line is Aguero Gomis Pelle
The price structure of my team is
        5.5 4.0
        6.0 5.5 4.5 4.5 4.5
        10.0 Ozil 7.5 5.5 4.5
        13.0 7.0 8.0
        1.5 itb
I prefer Ozil over Sanchez (for now at least). Also that 1.5 itb is really imp for me. I an switch Ozil-Sanchez or Silva-Hazard or Pelle-Benteke/Kane. The whole point is, with an early wildcard you have to have money itb to get the flexibility!

        Obvious Option: Drop Aguero

He's only worth 13m because there are NO captain options atm. In your scenario, you'd be bringing in a new captaincy option (a 10m striker).

The value play is to drop Kun and keep Sanchez/Silva/etc

I went for option 2) Pelle. Having a player at that price point in attack gives me far more flexibility. Having said that, it's not on a wildcard. I'm still happy with my team and structure from the start of the season. Took a -4 this week to shuffle the pack a bit but should now be set for the next couple of weeks. I'm hoping not to wildcard until GW13 ideally although that's not set in stone.

On a wildcard and finding balance easier with yaya over silva. I think there scores will be close in the long run and if money is tight the 1.4 will help.

Bit late to the party, but great post.

I definately agree(?) with you if we say your conclusion is to go more balanced. And I think the way to do that is picking Yaya over Silva. At this stage, I wouldn't want to spend 10m on a player I won't even consider captaining given I have Agüero. I also have Sanchez, who will be VC most weeks that I captain Agüero - should form be kept up. Should Agüero for some reason struggle with form, not play, get injured during warm up or whatever I'll want Sanchez as back-up captaincy option. Main thing is I'd always captain Sanchez over Silva regardless of Agüero.

        Here's my structure:

        4.5 / 4.0
        5.5 / 5.5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4.5
        Sanchez / Yaya / 8.5 / Mahrez / 4.5
        Agüero / 8.0-8.5 / 6.5-7.5

I think that's a good budget spread with the defence not being overly great, but far from too cheap either. Having Yaya instead of Silva really is enabling that decent balance thing I got going with another 8.5 along him and a 8-8.5 striker aswell. Now there's some great form mids in the 7m-bracket, but I trust the 8.5s more and it's very much about structure for me. Easy for me to ditch the other 8.5 for a 7m, giving me extra funds should Mahrez need an upgrade in the near future for example. But the key point is that with the current budget spread adapting to an offensive Arsenal double up, and getting in both offensive United and Liverpool cover is easy for me.

"Tempted into dealing our Wildcards by yet another “mediocre” Gameweek, Granville and I go through almost the entire episode before Jonty reveals he’s weakened and gone “active”. It’s a revelation that almost has us both logging off and reaching for our own panic buttons."

I don't mean to be rude but why would Jonty wc-ing cause any buttons to be hit, let alone a panic one?

Take out Davies straight away - Danny Rose is going to get plenty of gametime, particularly as soon as the Europa League comes around for Spurs.

With the rest, I would just take a look at who you're going to play each week, and which rotation works out the best.

Anyone know much about City line ups last season? Is it either Kolorov and Sagna or Clichy and Zaba - or do they play kolorov and zaba together as well? Also where will De Brune fit into the team - in place of navas? What foot is he?

I think Kolarov's prospects this season are improved with Sterling in front protecting him. Zaba will surely start most games at RB. I assume Tintin and Silva will be fairly fluid in their roles.

anyone care 1 way or another about athletics with the recent massive expose on how much of a sham it is with regards to doping etc, including a very famous UK athlete about whom, once the news breaks, is going to basically ruin athletics here for several years?

does anyone think this could happen to football, or is just too big/powerful to fail, because it's quite obvious cheating is going on, on a large scale. but do you as a supporter care?

Not even on their own sure, but certainly enhance a player's game.

There's many a player with great skill levels but not enough strength or pace to be effective (Cabella at our place last season for instance). If he had a bit more physicality about him, he'd be twice the player.

nobody will argue skill isn't king, but football games are not always won on moments of class, they're often won by the stronger fitter team, who earn more chances for that skill to shine

            absolutely this.

Doping itself doesn't make you faster or stronger. You dope so that you can train harder/longer. Would be a massive advantage in football.

yeah, i knew someone would say this, and fair point. but it does make you run around faster and longer than your opponents which is a big advantage and hence cheating. went on with total impunity for decades. now there is a small bit of focus but nothing more because they don't want the scandal.

Drugs in any sport don't make mediocre athletes champions, they enhance the performance of already good athletes. Lance Armstrong was an excellent cyclist, tactically astute, and a natural sportsman (he was a successful trialthlete as a teenager). He would have won a few one-day races or stages of tours here and there but drugs pushed him onto that next elite level.

It's the same in football. There are plenty of talented footballers out there who would be brilliant every now and then but who have been pushed into the elite category by drugs. Players who might tire towards the end of games but have an extra push from EPO or whatever. Whole teams who can implement high-energy pressing tactics for entire seasons when it should be unsustainable. Tactically brilliant and canny but fragile defenders who unnaturally enhance their muscle mass to make them beasts.

The list of ways drugs can help any sport is pretty much endless and it's naive to believe the top teams don't bend the rules as much as possible. If it happens in athletics, cycling etc. then it definitely happens in the richest sport on earth. The stakes are just too high for it not to.

well said, you've put it better that i did for sure. you've alluded to one of the main issues there for me where you have these pressing teams that run around like mindless idiots all game closing down and don't get tired. which if you've ever played football, at any sort of half reasonable level, you look on amazed. how are they still doing this etc?

Agreed. To say drugs wouldn't have as much of an impact on football as pure endurance sports is a fallacy. In my opinion (and I'd be amazed if I'm wrong) they've not only made football an endurance sport but changed the entire way it's played.

If I was to be super cynical, and I may as well at this point, I think the main reason you don't see more international teams pressing like club sides is that they don't have time to implement the necessary doping programs. The obvious exception in recent years was South Korea in '02 who had several months together pre-World Cup.

yeah you only have to look at some of the best teams out there. plus the dr. fuentes thing and the total non-appetite to look into the footballing side of it is laughable.

Yep, there's simply no appetite to expose it because the people supposedly policing the game are also the biggest profiteers from it.

On a side note I think it's highly likely a lot of players dope and don't realise it. There have been rumours of cases where players were given 'vitamin' injections that turned out to be anything but. Drugs in football is almost certainly systematic in teams rather than rogue individuals. That's not to say no players are aware but I assume a lot are naive as to the realities of it. I hope so anyway. I don't want to lose all my faith in human nature!

Eh, tennis will break before football and by that time they'll be a lot of doping fatigue in the public.

I think you're right about tennis breaking first but if football is ever exposed I don't think any amount of doping fatigue would protect the top clubs from the fallout. I say 'if' because I have no faith whatsoever in the motives of the people running the game. Football's too much of a cash cow for it to fall.
