This Much We Know – Gameweek 3

Bournemouth’s attackers are starting to settle. West Ham’s dodgy defence goes from bad to worse, United’s toils up top continue, Palace’s dead-ball duties are paying off, whilst City’s left-back maintains a strong case for our consideration. Here’s some of the lessons learned from the Gameweek’s nine fixtures so far…

Bournemouth have a top flight goalscorer…
Despite netting 98 times in the Championship last year, there was a growing concern that the step up to the top-flight could trouble Eddie Howe’s side after they failed to score in the first two Gameweeks. Saturday’s 4-3 win at West Ham silenced the doubters emphatically, with Callum Wilson’s hat-trick firing the Cherries to their first ever Premier League win. With his confidence on the up, Wilson has the form and fixtures to strengthen his case as this year’s Charlie Austin – at a price of 5.5, he now has home clashes against Leicester, Sunderland and Watford in the next five to get amongst the points.

It just might be Gradel over Ritchie in midfield…
Having played a part in 32 (15 goals, 17 assists) of his side’s 98 strikes in 2014/15, Matt Ritchie looked the likeliest source of points from the Bournemouth midfield. The Scot has been quickly usurped by new boy Max Gradel, though, and after failing to contribute to any of the weekend strikes, many will be having second thoughts. Gradel, on the other hand, provided a pair of assists and looks bang in form ahead of those above-mentioned fixtures.

The Hammers are in a state…
It’s all gone rapidly downhill since that Gameweek 1 win at Arsenal. West Ham seem incapable of keeping their discipline, with Carl Jenkinson’s sending off their fifth red card in nine competitive matches under Slaven Bilic. With the new system putting pressure on the full-backs to supply width from deep and new boy Angelo Ogbonna hauled off midway through the first-half, the Hammers look a shadow of the side that exited the Emirates with a 2-0 victory earlier this month. Jenkinson now joins Adrian on the sidelines through suspension and with Bilic’s men now rolling up to Anfield this weekend, those holding Liverpool’s main men will be licking their lips in anticipation.

Van Gaal may need to call for “Little Pea”…
As United’s skipper, Wayne Rooney looks assured of a starting berth under Louis van Gaal but the Dutchman will be reassessing his options up front after Saturday’s ineffectual showing against Newcastle. Rooney has now gone ten matches without finding the net for the Red Devils and, having introduced Javier Hernandez off the bench against the Magpies, the United boss may well be considering shifting his captain into the central support role as he continues to look for an effective combination up front.

…and will certainly welcome Fellaini return…
Van Gaal also has a “Plan B” option in the form of the giant Belgian, though. Having sat out the first three Gameweeks due to suspension, Fellaini is back in the mix ahead of this weekend’s trip to in-form Swansea and his return may well see Adnan Januzaj’s brief first-team spell come to an end. Granted, Fellaini is hardly on a par with Juan Mata and Memphis Depay when it comes to silky skills and deft touches in and around the box but his aerial ability and physical presence in the final third may well be called upon in light of United’s two goals in the first three matches.

Palace keep producing at set-pieces…
From the point of Alan Pardew’s arrival in Gameweek 21 last year, Palace registered more attempts (89) and were joint-top with West Brom for goals scored (12) from set-piece situations. As we saw on Saturday, with Scott Dann’s opener from a Jason Puncheon corner, the Eagles continue to prove reliable from dead-ball situations and the delivery of Puncheon and Yohan Cabaye look key weapons for the Selhurst Park side this term.

Mahrez is a no-brainer…
Still owned by only 27% of FPL managers, the Leicester wide man is the gift that keeps on giving after netting for the fourth time in three appearances. With the bandwagon picking up speed, acquiring Mahrez now looks a priority transfer for many – still only 5.9 and with spot-kick duties, there may not be a better value enabler on offer this season.

Shaqiri and Pedro are ready-made options….
There looks to be no settling-in period required after both produced the goods on their Premier League debuts to instantly stake a claim for consideration. Pedro offers a cheaper alternative to those Eden Hazard owners looking to free up cash to strengthen elsewhere, whilst Shaqiri’s schedule could barely be more enticing as he looks to rival the likes of Andre Ayew and Dimitri Payet as a viable mid-price contender.

Pulis is looking for answers at the back…
Having shipped six goals in their first two home fixtures, the Baggies look a pale imitation of the side that served up the defensive returns under Tony Pulis last season. The Welshman may be having second thoughts over keeping new boy James Chester and Joleon Lescott on the bench and, having opened talks with Tottenham’s Federico Fazio last week, it’s clear the West Brom defence is very much a work in progress for the time being.

Kolarov is becoming key…
Could this finally be his season? City’s focus on attack has seen Kolarov thrive down the left hand side in tandem with Raheem Sterling, with the latter’s pace allowing the Serbian plenty of room to bomb forward and contribute in the final third. Arguably, he looks more important than ever to the Etihad side and Fantasy managers alike right now – having netted the opener against Everton yesterday, he’ll surely be unleashed at home to Watford again as Maneul Pellegrini attempts to maintain his side’s early momentum.

Koeman is seeking clean sheets as a priority…
Yesterday’s shift to 3-5-2 helped steady the ship after the Saints conceded five times in the first two fixtures. With the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Jordy Clasie still injured, Ronald Koeman is clearly determined to look for alternative solutions in an attempt to keep opponents at bay. It’s uncertain how long the Dutchman will continue with his new set-up but the clean sheet perhaps suggests the likes of Maya Yoshida shouldn’t be written off just yet.

When things settle out after the wildcard wildebeest herds of FFS have finished stampeding and the hit mania has passed we will get to a more stable phase when there will be some really nice bargains out there...

Matt Ritchie is 5.9 now and whilst the hit-takers are piling into Callum Wilson, Ritchie has the same very kind fixture run coming up which some of the hit-takers are selling him for.

Ki Sun-yueng is 5.4 and will likely reach 5.3 by the time he's back from his hamstring strain, he'll be very well priced indeed at that level.

Yannick Bolasie is 6.4 and may get to 6.3 with Palace's poor immediate fixtures. 2nd top assister in the PL last season (12 assists), once the transfer window is closed and he can concentrate on playing rather than possible moves he could be a steal.

Bojan is down to 5.4 and when fit could well thrive playing behind Diouf and with Shaquiri. Bojan is exactly the kind of player that could well develop a great understanding with his Swiss team mate.

Theo Walcott wasn't coming near my squad at the start of the season. But he's 8.6 now and what if Giroud picks up an injury in a couple of weeks' time (and Arsenal didn't sign another striker)? Different story.

Firmino has accomplished a fall to 8.3 without even kicking a ball in anger. But the qualities that many were attracted by before the season have not changed. And he's fit now.

Tyrone Mings is down to 4.4 and probably has the possibility to offer every bit as much attacking threat as Francis once he starts being selected. As Bournemouth's record signing it's likely that will be sooner rather than later.

Marco Van Ginkel is down to 5.4 and could easily reach 5.3. A young, up-and-coming midfielder with an eye for goal, he impressed in Serie A last season and is a regular so far for Stoke. He could well turn out to be another kindly priced budget midfield option that is off the radar right now.

Raheem Sterling is down to 8.9 and with the money piling into Yaya (including a fair few sideways transfers one suspects) could easily fall to 8.8. That could turn out to be a spectacular bargain later on. Wildcards aside, transferring Sterling out in the face of City's current brilliant fixtures seems a peculiar move to me.

J-Rod and Sadio Mane have fallen to 6.9 and 7.9 respectively and the current poor impression people have about Southampton could easily see them fall further. J-Rod is really still getting match sharpness back after a long injury lay-off. 6.8 could prove to be a real snip later on.

Cazorla and Ramsey have fallen to the 8.4 mark and are still being sold, 8.3 isn't out of the question. Personally I'm not keen on playing the Arsenal midfield lottery but if a couple of injuries happen either could prove to be a great cut-priced pick-up.

Daryl Janmaat is now 4.9, a kind price for a defender that had 8 assists last season and is playing for a side that McClaren has organised better. Newcastle have a fantastic fixture run from GW9. I'm just hoping he makes 4.8 by then.

Milner and Henderson were in many RMTs pre-season and are both now 6.9. If Milner outscored Andre Ayew, say, over the next 12 games would anyone really be surprised? I wouldn't.

Saido Berahino has fallen to 6.4 and could make 6.3 this week. How would that be for a Spurs or United striker? 😕 Wouldn't be bad even if he stayed at WBA.

James Chester was a big signing at £8m for a club like WBA. He'll surely nail a spot in what will likely be a good defensive team in due course and also has some goal threat from set pieces. Another potential bargain there at 4.9 if timed right.

Kevin Mirallas is 6.9 now and Everton's awkward fixtures suggest he may make 6.8 or even 6.7 by the time GW11 arrives. That will be juicy.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is one of the most bizarre fallers of them all. He is projected to hit 7.4 tonight whilst there is heavy investment in Ayew (not the greatest record in France) and Montero (impressive but an uncertain FPL asset). Sigurdsson will score plenty of FPL points this season and personally if I were bringing in a Swansea midfielder he'd be the one I'd want.

Lastly we have Jeremain Lens who has managed an assist in every game so far whilst playing for a team that has started poorly. He's (crazily) due to fall to 6.4. Another spectacular potential bargain there once Sunderland improve (which they showed signs of doing last weekend), especially as he wasn't over-priced in the first place.

With all these players, timing it right will be the key thing. But any one of them is capable of being a big asset to a FPL squad as the season progresses and a potential price-rise bandwagon a manager could get on early if astute enough. Playing the money game (TV) is important but there is more than one way to play it.

Taking lots of hits now to remove perfectly good selections whilst under the pressure of a perceived bad start may be for some but it's not for me. There are 35 weeks to go and some of the above players that have lost value due to the points chasers will be of great service, possibly sooner rather than later in some cases.

the problem is the point chasers are also chasing TV - these lower priced assets will also be available to those teams to come back in and pick up when they start to perfrom but they will have an extra couple of million in the bank to fund a haz or sanchez extra than the non wildcard teams (non WC here...)

They are available to everyone and I'm not discounting the money game. My TV is currently 101.00 which I'm happy with and not a hit taken. It's something I keep my eyes on but it won't be to the extent of taking unnecessary hits.

If I had Sigurdsson, for example, I'd keep him fall or not. Because he'd only be 1 10-point game away from rising again and I'd be confident of that happening.

Agreed on a siggy type situation - would hold if i had him. Getting to 101 no hits is a good acheivement and can see why this takes the pressure off. C$cked up not jumping on the mahwagon so havent managed it...

I'd also add Oscar. Will start at #10 and be on set pieces. Scored points gw1 then picked up a knock.

You could be right, but i wouldn't put money on it. Jose loves Willian (understandably). Certainly not a clear choice.

I think Willian is behind Oscar for some games (particularly those where teams may sit back and will need to be broken down).

Wouldn't be surprised to see Willian in 'the hole' or in a 4-3-3 with Oscar on the bench though in the more competitive games though.

Also something that shouldn't be overlooked is that Pedro took four corners on Sunday, he is yet more competition for Oscar and Fabregas for set pieces.

Cheers mate. Wish I still had a wildcard. I went the other way and got players who had already gone up 0.1 though before they went up even more. Had to because Walcott's drop meant I couldn't swap like-for-like (i.e Walcott > Sterling)

Personally I think holding the wildcard will prove to have been a great move if you can come through this period without too much damage to TV and without carrying too many poor selections.

In one week the emphasis has shifted from "get rid of Chelsea" to "get Chelsea". The perspective in a couple of weeks' time will be different again. The longer you wait the better decisions you can make.

some great points here - I was thinking about the Walcott potential on my way home from work. Driving his price down makes him particularly rewarding for anyone who gets him in ahead of a run of games.

Being so cheap, his price will sky rocket as everyone piles back in and he'll almost certainly be bringing home the bacon when nailed as a first teamer.

Sterling is another interesting one but in his case, he is playing and i don't think he's really looked that impressive. I can understand the move for Silva/Yaya who both look excellent this season

Good point, I might get on KSY again in the future as a budget option if Ayew isn't still tearing it up!

However Ayew has far better statistics per appearance from the first three games than Sigurdsson has achieved this year or last and is still cheaper so I wouldn't consider that differential.

Berahino is for sure the one to watch.

Some great bargains there just waiting for injuries and suspensions elsewhere in their teams to get a chance. Some of the price falls are insane for those actually delivering - Lens in particular.

I thought that could be excused by the opposition scoring at will, making bps hard to earn for Sunlun attackers. 17, 15 and 8 scored in bp system though, with 9 pts earned for an assist is dreadful.

Still, if he keeps getting assists for 6,4-5, thats interesting enough

Sell Value is more important than Team Value whennit comes to WC actvation.

Until they go up at least .2 ... it matters little.

You'll also want the rapid rise to affect players on a purple patch rather than season keepers (e.g. Kolarov) otherwise you're not likely to sell them regardless.
