Alternative Gameweek 5 Captaincy Options

Last week Sergio Aguero was the latest in a long line of Fantasy Football Scout community poll top picks (see home page) to fail to deliver returns as a captain. Yet, despite a measly two points in each of his last two games and just a 6.7% goal conversion rate, he is flying high in the Fantasy Football Scout poll as the community’s preferred captaincy option for Gameweek 5. Following on from the relative success of last week, this week’s article explores some less popular alternatives to the misfiring Argentinian for your armbands in the next round of matches.

Ayew Vs. Worryingly Weak Watford

After joining Swansea on a free transfer this summer, Andre Ayew has had an incredible start to the season. Back in the goals last week against Manchester United, Ayew inflicted further punishment on unfaithful managers with an assist and three bonus points to boot.

This week Swansea face a Watford rearguard that was breached by both Sterling and Fernandinho in Gameweek 4 and I’m tipping Ayew to also benefit against their deep defensive formation. With a superior points-per-game rate (from an amazingly similar number of chances and shots) Ayew narrowly edges out Gomis as my top Swansea pick for the armband this week.

Key Stats – Ayew has had a ‘big chance’ every game this season, only Diouf has had more (1.25 big chances per game).

Verdict – Offers an excellent differential, perhaps the safest choice this week.

Wilson Vs. Newly Promoted Norwich

If Aguero demonstrates the importance of the (chronically ignored) chances converted statistic for measuring form, then Callum Wilson is the other side of the coin. Despite just two big chances and only eight goal attempts in his first four Premier League games, the Bournemouth man has chalked up three goals from open play and a converted penalty (a chance conversion rate of 50%).

Thanks to Ruth_NZ for revealing last week that Wilson also tended to score in clusters last season. These statistics, combined with a tasty away fixture against a Norwich side that have conceded two goals a game this season, put Wilson high on my list of alternative captains for this week.

Key Stats – Wilson sits alongside Bafetimbi Gomis and Riyad Mahrez as the joint Premier league top goalscorer so far (each have four).

Verdict –  Like last week Wilson offers a good differential, again a great choice if you have ground to make up.

Sakho Vs. Tim Krul (Newcastle)

Diafra Sakho finally got his name on the score sheet last weekend (scoring the third goal as West Ham steamrollered 10-man Liverpool). With 11 points in the last two weeks, the mercurial talent is now also beginning to live up to FPL managers’ expectations.

Following the arrival of Victor Moses and uncertainty around the Hammers midfield, Sakho looks to be the stand-out option for this week’s trip to Newcastle. Considering the Magpies have conceded more goal attempts than any other team this season, the only thing stopping him is the save-hungry Tim Krul.

Key Stats – Sakho has taken eight shots in the box this season, more than any other West Ham player.

Verdict – Not much of a differential against the multitude of West Ham backers flying high in the FPL standings, a bit of a risk for the armband as he faces Krul between the sticks.

Best Of The Rest

Swansea’s Gomis narrowly missed out to Ayew but is worth considering for those managers who do not have the Ghanaian to call upon, with a goal in every game so far this season he seems a relatively safe bet. There are also a multitude of in-form attacking options up the road at Manchester City. Raheem Sterling and David Silva rewarded those that put faith in them last week and are enticing options ahead of Aguero at the moment. However, with questions surrounding the City midfield following the arrival of Kevin de Bruyne on Sunday, sticking the armband on either would be a gamble. Finally, down in London, Chelsea have been poor defensively but Pedro has rewarded his owners with a goal and two assists in his first two games in royal blue making him, arguably, the only Chelsea player worth entrusting with the armband at the moment.

Last Week’s Picks – How They Performed

Three of my four picks last week defeated or matched the top community pick (Agüero), while two delivered returns. This is far from perfect but compares well to the captaincy poll where, as Bowstring the Carp and others have pointed out, none of the top six picks scored well.

Hazard Vs. Palace
Score: 2
Differential to Agüero as captain: 0

Verdict – My only alternative pick to really fall flat on his face last week, Hazard turned in yet another sub-par performance.

Kolarov Vs. Watford
Score: 6
Differential to Agüero as captain: +8

Verdict – As predicted Kolarov proved to be a safe differential, giving him the armband combined with Ayew’s heroics saved my Gameweek 4.

Mahrez Vs. Bournemouth (injured)
Score 1:
Differential to Agüero as captain: -2

Verdict – Ahead of last week he seemed too much of a gamble and unfortunately that proved to be the case. However it could have been very different as Mahrez was injured in the first half, and thus missed the opportunity to tuck away a penalty in the second.

Wilson Vs. Leicester
Score: 7
Differential to Agüero as captain: +10

Verdict – As predicted Wilson offered a very big differential and, as last week’s article suggested, was a better choice than Mahrez.

    I think this is the key issue for the coming weeks. Do we go maverick with out captaincy or stick with the heavy hitters. Those that have followed these articles will have done well in recent weeks. Even I'm tempted to go rogue with the captaincy next week. Good trio to choose from here.

      I feel like I'm frozen in time, these are all great differentials until I see Aguero's fixture vs a leaky Palace... Basically exactly like last week.

      It's brutal.

        It still feels like we're at a stage of the season where Aguero hasn't saturated all the teams yet so even just having his points is good enough.

        Go for the best fixture, last week was definitely Aguero but how often to Palace concede more than 1-2 goals at home? Probably not often.

        Sanchez for me next week... but Sakho has potential

          As you would expect for an Alan Pardew side Palace have been expansive, so I do think Agüero is more tempting this week than last. But unless he scores 10+ plus in one of his next three games I don't think I'll captain him until the Manchester City Vs. Newcastle fixture.

      Good luck! If he is declared fit before the next game he's a valid choice. I was really close to including him here as once again looked a real threat against Bournemouth.

      In the end I left him out because of his injury doubt, more competition for places in the Leicester midfield and Ranieri's tinkering, just seemed too many things could go wrong.

    Worryingly weak Watford? Isn't this the Watford that kept Aguero quiet? I think it's far from certain that Ayew is "the safest choice".

    Everton and Chelsea played out a 9 goal thriller at Goodison Park around this time last season, and I wouldn't be surprised to see yet another high scoring game. For this reason I think the likes of Barkley, Lukaku, Costa, or Pedro might be worth a punt.

      I put Ayew ahead of Gomis because I agree, Watford have sat deep and afforded strikers such as Agüero less space. They don't concede a huge number of shots in the box but three midfielders have scored against them recently (Barkley, Fernandinho and Sterling) and they do concede more shots from distance.

      Chelsea aren't very predictable at the moment so it would be brave to bet on or against them, they could be expansive but could just as easily 'park the bus'. Another good punt I was close to including was Chadli, but with Spurs' new signings there are reports his place could be under threat.

          He has had more shots on target (3/6) from outside the box shots than Gomis (1/2), though admittedly not quite as many as Sigurdsson (4/9) or Shelvey (4/11), closer than one might think though.

          I'm not saying it's all about long distance efforts against Watford. Although they don't concede many chances in the box, their deep defending means that midfielders making runs into the box are rewarded, as Sterling and Fernandinho were.

            Thanks - I really should have checked the stats before commenting. Three shots on target from outside the box in four games is decent. I'll captain Ayew (I have Aguero) and let's see how it goes.

      I think Sanchez is coming into form, previous table by community member has him as top of most likely to score based on shots inside box. Stoke have so far lost both home games and drawn both away, once at Norwich and then against Tottenham who had been two goals ahead. So Sanchez as captain for me this week.

    Repost;
    Need help, I've got 2 players who's had a price-fall and still doubting if I need to ship them out or keep; Hazard and Mertz.

    Mertz is still a doubt and with Gabriel performance, I'm afraid he might sit out.
    As for Hazard, I'm considering getting Pedro instead, saving some ITB in the process to upgrade my attack.

    Moreover, I've got Pellè and with the coming fixtures, I don't think he'll have a good return.

    I've only 1 FT but might even take a hit to get it right.

    Who's the best option to replace Mertz for 4.5 (good CS/Attack potential) ? Francis / Ward / Nyom? My other DEF are Clyne, Kompany, Targett, Richards, Butland & McCarthy.

    Should I ship Hazard for Pedro? Or Sanchez?

    As for Pellè, any chance he scores against WBrom?

      I think LFC has been a bit too dependent on him lately and blocking his game, was cutting the distribution line.

      LVG will have to think hard to know where the threat might come from. And eager to see if Firmino can raise himself to the challenge and prove his worth!

    ***WARNING*** Sakho suitors need to be aware that Senegal have an international friendly on the Saturday before WHM's MNF, which to my mind means there's a gametime risk attached to Diafra.

    I discovered this when trying to weigh up Lens vs Kouyate for my swap with price dropping Ritchie.

    Now I don't know whether or not he's an intended starter for that match, so maybe someone else in the know can shed some light on the matter?

    Bit of a dilhema for GW5, thinking of playing my all out attack card. I have lots of players with away fixtures and not condfident in 3 of my defenders keeping a clean sheet. I could drop Gomis, given how deep Watford defend... Which would you do and why:

    1) Courtois (eve);
    Kolarov (cry), Darmian (LIV), Naughton (wat);
    Silava (cry), Pedro (eve), Payet (NEW), Ayew (wat), Mahrez(AVL);
    Wilson (nor), Aguero (cry)

    Leaving Gomis on the bench with Richards, Muniesa and Butland.

    OR

    2) PLAY ALL OUT ATTACK

    Courtois (eve);
    Kolarov (cry), Darmian (LIV);
    Silava (cry), Pedro (eve), Payet (NEW), Ayew (wat), Mahrez(AVL);
    Gomis (wat), Wilson (nor), Aguero (cry)

    Dropping Naughton to the bench (open to suggestions of another defender to drop), and including all 5 of my midfielders.

        I try to just pick the player I think will score highest each week, but I do take more risks if I'm lagging behind. I think I actually prefer it if the player I give the armband to isn't on TV!

        For example last week I gave Kolarov the armband as I'd just had a fantastic GW3 and thought he would at least equal Agüero and could outscore him. I think had I been where I was in GW2 I would have gone with Wilson, had I been in the top 100K I would probably have stuck with Agüero.

        Struggling to pick between Ayew and Wilson this week but going with Wilson I think.

    Good article, however I think your calculation for the Differential to Aguero as captain figures to be misleading. The are correct when comparing the captaincy options to one another. However, assuming you had both Wilson and Aguero in your squad and you put the armband on Kun, you would have gotten 11 pts from them. If you put it on Wilson you would have gotten 16 pts from them. The difference, provided you owned both, is really +5 not +10 as you are showing.

    To really get +10 pts implies you were either benching Wilson before deciding to give him the armband or you sold Kun to get Wilson(c) on a ft

      Thanks that's a really good point Juggos, I'll consider changing how this is represented for next week.

      I'm leaning towards just reporting the points scored by each player as whichever way I do the other calculation it won't apply to everyone. I sometimes forget myself that only 1 in 3 managers own Agüero!

    Good article but disagree with the way you are calculating the points difference between the differential captain and Aguero. If I owned Aguero and Wilson last week that's a total of 9 points. Captaining Wilson would have meant a total of 16 points, captaining Aguero would have been a total of 11 points. Therefore the difference between an Aguero and Wilson captain where I own both is only 5 points not 10

      Thanks, Juggos pointed this out above so I'll just put the points scored next week as whichever way I do it it won't apply to all managers (not all own Agüero and only a small proportion of owners are selling/benching him to play these options).

    Great article btw and I think I'm going Wilson too given that my ranking is 2m+ at the moment *shudders*.I do think Aguero has the potential to do well, but Wilson currently has the edge in terms of confidence.

    Very good article, can't believe only just discovered it. Definitely got me thinking and I will ceetainly be following and throwing some rogues in there - I actually went for a bold Kolarov last week (before discovered awesome article) and was very chuffed with myself. You really havent properly addressed the added benefit of the skeptical looks your mates give u when you tell them your captain, and then the feeling you get when those points come rolling in.

    That being said, for this week, I have to go Kun for captain. I do feel I have wildcarded pretty early to get Aguero in, and if I am not going to captain him against Palace defence, when he is statisically (and just down right balance in the universe) long due some goals, then why am I spending 13m on him haha.

      Haha true, if my picks come up trumps this week I'll be sure to mention it in the next one!

      My fear this week is that with such a head start in the league and a tricky game against Juventus Man City may

    Hi, i read your nice article.
    Im considering Ayew, Gomis(against Watford) and Aguero, Silva(against Pallace)
    as candidates for my captain this week.
    Aguero disappointed me last week but showed strong performance for Argentine,
    while Silva shows stable performance with high probablity of assist.
    Ayew and Gomis had been a real threat but Watford conseded 4 goals in 4 games
    while Pallace conceded 5 goals in 4 games without a single clean sheet so far.
    After seeing Watford's defence versus City, Wouldnt it be better to give Aguero
    one more chance or believe in Silva for a safe choice?
    Like to hear what you think about my opinion

    Whenever Aguero doesn't score, he becomes more tempting than before, because he is top class striker and rarely blanks for too long, and whenever he scores he is expected to keep it running.

    It's just so tough not to captain him :/

      I think I will go with #Sanchez.Though he is out of touch but he could be a good differential as the % of fpl managers owning sanchez is low.Aguero is a tempt and will always be,but atleast I have this player to share half the point unless he scores a hattrick and you are 20 points behind from other managers. #OnlySanchezIsReal 😀
