Team Form Focus – Gameweek 5

Team Form Focus is a new weekly article analysing the in-form teams in the league and the ones failing to deliver. The statistics are taken from the last four Gameweeks, which will go up to six Gameweeks once we’ve hit Gameweek 7. I’ll also be picking out a player who has the potential to do well for the next Gameweek or several Gameweeks. Potential clean sheets also go under examination, with two or three teams being tipped each week to shut the opposition out.

The Form Table

Sarjeantable

KEY: P = Played, GS = Goals Scored, FS = Failed to Score, GC = Goals Conceded, CS = Clean Sheet, PTS = Points.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Alexis Sanchez — Arsenal haven’t been in form at all recently, scoring 0.75 goals per game as opposed to 1.87 last season, but I’m tipping Arsenal and their star man to return to goalscoring glory over the next three games. Arsenal’s next three opponents (Stoke, Chelsea and Leicester) have conceded a total of 19 goals this season, with only Bournemouth facing teams who have shipped more over the next three games. Despite two being away games (the latter two) and a game against Chelsea – who notoriously play a defensive game against the bigger clubs – I still think Arsenal can find a few goals in those games. Alexis Sánchez has taken the most shots (20) in the Premier League, finding the target five times. He’s also close to topping the table for ‘shots inside the box,’ which is always a good indication of someone who’s likely to rediscover their form.

THE CLEAN SHEET PICKS

West Ham, Southampton and Swansea — Two obvious teams to keep clean sheets this weekend are West Ham and Swansea, who both face the worst attacking sides so far this season, with both the teams they face – Newcastle and Watford, failing to score the most and scoring the least. West Ham have managed to keep two clean sheets so far, with Swansea keeping one against Newcastle. Swansea face Watford away from home and were actually better on the road last year, keeping seven clean sheets, compared to six at home. Southampton have kept back-to-back clean sheets against Watford and Norwich and face a West Brom side that has failed to score in two matches and struggled to score more than one goal against a nine-man Stoke in Gameweek 4.

So is the "Dullard" still rooting for Aguero or are you having the differential captain in Alexis?

I actually consider Sanchez the duller pick. Arsenal have scored 10 past Stoke at the Emirates in the last four years, Sanchez has some of the best attacking stats so far this season (albeit apart from the crucial one - actual goals). Plus he's at home.

But Aguero v Palace could be tasty too. In the end I may go for the simple home and away criteria to decide.

Thanks for the insight Jonty! Now looking at it that way I am getting it why so many around here were passing on their armbands to Sanchez. 🙂

Given that people above me in my local leagues will have Aguero captain, for me that Sanchez captaincy could be a differential. But I am still worried about Sanchez's lack of ruthlessness in front of goal while Aguero has scored in his international match. Lots to think!

My captain will be Sanchez. My thinking process goes something like:

      + Arsenal are at home.
+ Stoke are not defensively minded, even if they do decide to park the bus and play on the counter.
+ Sanchez leads the way statistically for shots in the box, and a high number are on target or blocked.

      - Aguero playing 2 international games (the latter being on Wednesday), and in South America.
      - With CL next week, we could see Bony start or be subbed on.
      - Man City playing away.
      - Crystal Palace in form.

Ideally, I'd like to captain Aguero but I just think it's too risky this week.

I currently have the armband on Sanchez, but was set on switching to Aguero. But you've got some good points there. But then Aguero went ritoting against Bolivia this weekend, so he should be primed for a haul, as well.

You note stoke not being defensive minded as a point in favour of captaining alexis but fail to note the same for crystal palace who are also not a defensively minded team.

That's true, but they're able to play on the counter and have huge (if not the best) support at home. They're also much more in form than Stoke.

But bottom line, Stoke away will concede goals (and more than likely score goals). Just need a little luck that Sanchez will be involved. Looking at the stats, he should be.

Good stuff! Though I wouldn't count out Newcastle's chances of scoring just yet (and it's not just because I'm biased) - the low attacking threat is made more understandable by the fixtures thus far. S'oton, Swansea, United and arsenal are no mugs! Plus I can't in good faith trust the West Ham defence after witnessing that horror show against Bournemouth!

Newcastle have played 2 games with 10 men, their numbers are scweed by this. West Ham aren't good at home. If I was to pick clean sheets it would be Arsenal and

Lots of people backing Arsenal this week and it looks completely unfounded to me. They aren't scoring and have a bad home record which goes back to the end of last season. Sanch z lots of shots but you need to look at the quality, he doesn't look in the verge of anything if you watch the matches. He still looks undercooked but no doubt Wenger will keep flogging him

Is Cresswell (C) too much of a punt?

Tired of Aguero (C) with no returns and need to climb up some ML rankings.
